No libertarian would support a "PBS"
Probably not, but we sure could use an LBS (Libertarian Broadcasting System).
True if the government is controlling the editorial content. But of course we already have Voice of America and Radio Liberty and such like. Don't hear much opposition to those. So apparently propaganda is perfectly ok as long as it is practiced outside the US before it hones its effectiveness and can be used within the US.
As for mere money support, I don't see much difference between a government subsidy and a tax deduction for some corporate items but not other items (eg a deduction for interest expense on debt but not dividends on equity, etc). I suspect that PBS probably gets more of the former than other media corps gets the latter. But the latter is very pervasive in distorting a free market (not just in media), directly corrupting, and basically unknown/ignored by those who claim to be all free market.
My favorite term for PBS and NPR are "Welfare TV" and "Welfare Radio" (respectively but not respectfully.)
Petr Beckmann called it the Public Brainwashing Service
Ooooh! Dare I say, Dr. Beckmann nuked 'em good with that one!
"Ni hao ma, my multivariate-gender pre-sexual adults! Today's lesson is 'Why is a penis a female organ too?'"
Guest stars: Bill "Daddy's Favorite Sci-Priest" Nye, Rachel "Black ain't so whack" Dolezal, and a Hologram of George Floyd choking to death on fentanyl.

Heaton/Bragg and Remy. Outstanding!
Can we flip the script where 95% of the stuff on reason is Heaton/Bragg/Remy and 5% devoted to the other guys?
They're usually good, but this was gut busting. My wife wondering whats wrong with me right now.

Whoa, the puppets were kind of racist.
Isn’t PBS mostly funded by donations. I know NOVA was sponsored by a generous donation of Reason’s benefactor family.
The shows are mostly funded by donations and grants. The stations themselves are around fifty fifty taxes and donations.
And quite frankly, a few commercial breaks IN BETWEEN SHOWS would eliminate any need for the taxes.
Commercial money from hawking products is dirty. All money for serious programming should come from wealthy benefactors who have a vision to improve humanity.
I'll remember that the next time I'm watching America's Test Kitchen / Cooks Country / etc. and the spot where they let us know that the segment was sponsored by Fischer & Paykel comes up.
America’s Test Kitchen
Bridget Lancaster - Would.
I would have dinner with her for sure. She could cook a dish and I could cook one and we could trade notes.
That's what you meant, right?
I think Unicorn means that they would do what you said and then serve the dishes a la Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger on 9 1/2 Weeks. 😉
I'm not up on all the latest slang. Is "trade notes" the euphemism that kids are using these days?
I wonder to this day who got all the royalties from the sale of Seseme Street swag. If PBS didn't get some the royalties, it wouldn't have been to damn smart on their part.
So Papa Pederastia it is then!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
And quite frankly, a few commercial breaks IN BETWEEN SHOWS would eliminate any need for the taxes.
If the taxes are about the stations rather than the content, then the cost of licensing those airwaves falls into the govt revenue/spending category.
Those airwaves are a perfect example of a land resource. No one created the resource so it is not original property it is commons. The reason government then gets involved in deciding where/how to assign title/licensing is because government courts are where any disputes about that commons stuff occur. Because government is the fiduciary of that commons stuff, it should also maximize the return on the licensing of those assets rather than just hand it over to someone for free or near free. That would help offset the coercive stuff of govt (taxes, interest spending, etc) with what is a voluntary market (licensing fees, land rent, etc).
National broadcast, mostly yes. Local shows, not so much.
Yes. And PBS is one of the few non profits I give to. The NOVA series alone probably contributes about as much as our teachers do towards STEM education in this country.
It's good to know that it's NOT a good idea to donate to PBS. I was wondering, thank you for giving me some certainty.
If you have a CapitalOne card and a small or non-existent tax refund, you're already contributing, like it or not.
Q: What's in your wallet?
A: The government.
You know Jennifer Garner doen't have a CapitalOne credit card because she would probably try using one of her Aliases to skip out on payment.
And you damn sure know that Samuel L. Jackson doesn't have a CapitalOne card because he'd be screaming: " I don't want no motherfuckin' CapitalOne credit card in my motherfuckin' wallet!!!"
Except those that watch NOVA, are self selecting thinkers. The rest will never cease to be entertained by Sports stars of fortune and the 11 millionth tawdry sexual innuendo on the sitcom of the day.
I like to watch Nova and sports.
Fox had the two Cosmos series hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Netflix has Universe and Disney + has National Geographic. I'm sure other streaming services have even more. Basically, PBS isn't even necessary for educational TV anymore.
Oh, and the two latest Cosmos series stream for free on TubiTV and Carl Sagan's original is available from different channels of YouTube.
Good thing too. When I was young, Cosmos came on past my bedtime. The local PBS station treated it like porn, probably scared of local Bible-Thumpers who railed against Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man
By "free" I mean that TubiTV has commercials, though they are, in my view, unobtrusive and usually classy.
Bravo!

To avoid whitewashing Reading Rainbow, Heaton should've done it in blackface with a visor over his eyes.
Great Job!
What wonderful cameos! The Cuomo-caught-in-the-headlights look was priceless.
Wow nice
That alone was worth my devalued contribution.
Wasn't YouTube basically libertarian PBS?
Until some time last year anyway, when they started taking down first hand medical reports from physicians because they weren't "peer reviewed".
Long before that.
Oh, hello!
Do you have a warrant to be here?
----
I was hooked right away!
I am amused.
dudes. fuck yes lol.
The genuine libertarian characters are not shown here. Those would be Statler and Waldorf, the two old hecklers in the balcony on The Muppet Show, when Jim Henson went commercial.
On point!, now did you know their names from memory?
Of course. When I was young watching them, I wanted to be just like them when I grew up.
From the looks of things, I'll still be like them, but I'll be behind the Muppet Theater, heckling at a cloud and fighting the Muppet rats in the gutter for scraps from the Swedish Chef's creations.
Someone sure did a lot of work just to see us laughing through our tears. If Schadenfreude is laughing at others misery, what’s the word for laughing at our own?
Masochism?
Pleeeeeeeze let this be real! I'd even pay for it, and I AM a for-real cheapskate libertarian.
Brilliant AND entertaining. Nationalsocialist People's Radio privatized at last, and you saw it first on Reason!
Saturday Night Live even spoofed NPR Welfare Radio. Just look up "NPR's Delishious Dish: Schweddy Balls" on YouTube. Watching them keep a straight face through it all was the biggest laugh! Not even God's Own Prohibitionists could stay this dour! 🙂
Correction: "NPR's Delicious Dish: Schweddy Balls." So the search engines aren't tripped up. So much for those all-powerful algorhythms.
The joy in this video is that it will -- at one moment or another -- piss EVERYONE off. But the comedy far exceeds the "I don't agree with this part" exceptions.
Of course, for a true libertarian, it's ALL funny!
I shared it, and I'm just a pussy libertarian. Thanks for producing this gem!
