Kamala Harris' Dishonest Campaign To Destroy Backpage.com

The vice presidential candidate opportunistically painted the site's co-founders as villains when they were actually helping law enforcement to catch sex traffickers.

Before Senator and former California Attorney General Kamala Harris was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate in the 2020 election, she played a role in a campaign to force a website called Backpage.com to stop operating on the grounds that it was used to facilitate sex trafficking.

"Backpage.com needs to shut itself down, when it has created as its business model the profiting off of selling human beings and the purchase of human beings," Harris said at a 2012 press conference.

She would go on to spread misinformation about the site and its co-founders, Michael Lacey and James Larkin, and she co-filed criminal charges that were quickly dismissed but succeeded at garnering headlines and photo ops that raised her political profile. In reality, Backpage.com had become a powerful tool for law enforcement to help catch sex traffickers because of the cooperation and commitment of the site's founders to that cause, whom Harris and many other states' attorneys general had painted as villains.

Reason's Elizabeth Nolan-Brown revealed secret Justice Department memos showing prosecutors spent years trying to build a child sex trafficking case against Backpage but failed "to uncover compelling evidence of criminal intent or a pattern of reckless conduct regarding minors." Instead, Justice Department officials found Backpage was "remarkably responsive" to law enforcement requests and proactively sent ads containing minors to authorities

The memos revealed a story that didn't match the characterization that Harris and other politicians, attorneys general, and activists had been pushing for years.

This is an excerpt from a longer documentary, available here.

  1. “Government needs to shut itself down, when it has created as its business model the profiting off of selling permission and the theft of property,” Harris could say at any press conference.

  2. what a horrible cunt.

    1. Hey all of ye Reasonoid readers! Do NOT bother to read this article! Do NOT bother to read (or read about) ANY links, facts, or logic contained in this article and video! Do NOT bother to trouble your pretty little heads about silly factual details gathered by useless Reason-writer eggheads!
Because I, the SMARTEST ONE, can “summarize” it ALL for you! Here it is, above article summarized: “Mixed-Race Woman Bad”!

(/Sarc, revenge for moronic “summaries” about “Orange Man Bad”)

      1. likely conclusion *from* rtfa.

      2. Squirrelly, go drink your Drano.

  3. I’m so happy the DNC picked Kamala as their (vice) presidential candidate.

    1. In this case, it’s “President In Waiting”

  4. Kamala pioneered selling herself to Willie Brown. What a hypocrite she is.

    1. A woman who is an actual whore by the ordinary definition of the term, tried to run other whores out of business. It is a bit ironic if nothing else.

      1. she can’t have the competition of whores who leave when paid

        1. And who are younger and hotter.

      2. She doesn’t like competition.

  5. Hopefully this will continue. I wish they would take down social media as well.

  6. Isn’t this usual ENBs domain? Could she not bring herself to disparage sweet Momala?

    1. If you think ENB is the only writer here that is going to perform a series of ever more ridiculous mental gymnastics to “vote Blue no matter who” then you probably don’t want to read CATO’s “criminal justice reform” people, unless you want a laugh.

      1. “Orange man bad” is literally the only principle left in Koch world.

        1. I gotta say that it’s a little weird that there have been almost no articles about Jo Jorgensen.

          1. I wonder how much exposure the LP ticket would be getting had they nominated John Monds as VP.

I definitely don’t condone identity politics, but that duo would have checked a lot of boxes. The campaign could have made a lot of noise about it to try to force the issue.

Personally, I’d be content to see them stay strictly to policy (any campaign, for that matter), but it’s an interesting “what-if”.

          2. It’s not that weird if you consider that Reason is largely just regurgitating the NYT editorial pages now with the occasional and slightest of quibbles.

The NYT was pimping Gary Johnson last time around. They’re not pimping Jo this time around. It’s not about politics. It’s just fashion at this point and nothing more.

          3. check the BLM site.

        2. “Orange man bad” is literally the only principle left in Koch world.

Orange Man bad?!? He BAD, all right! He SOOO BAD, He be GOOD! He be GREAT! He Make America Great Again!

We KNOW He can Make America Great Again, because, as a bad-ass businessman, He Made Himself and His Family Great Again! He Pussy Grabber in Chief!

See The Atlantic article by using the below search-string in quotes:
“The Many Scandals of Donald Trump: A Cheat Sheet” or this one…

He pussy-grab His creditors in 7 bankruptcies, His illegal sub-human workers ripped off of pay on His building projects, and His “students” in His fake Get-Rich-like-Me realty schools, and so on. So, He has a GREAT record of ripping others off! So SURELY He can rip off other nations, other ethnic groups, etc., in trade wars and border wars, for the benefit of ALL of us!!!

All Hail to THE Pussy Grabber in Chief!!!

Most of all, HAIL the Chief, for having revoked karma! What comes around, will no longer go around!!! The Donald has figured out that all of the un-Americans are SOOO stupid, that we can pussy-grab them all day, every day, and they will NEVER think of pussy-grabbing us right back!

Orange Man Bad-Ass Pussy-Grabber all right!

We CAN grab all the pussy, all the time, and NONE will be smart enough to EVER grab our pussies right back!

These voters simply cannot or will not recognize the central illusion of politics… You can pussy-grab all of the people some of the time, and you can pussy-grab some of the people all of the time, but you cannot pussy-grab all of the people all of the time! Sooner or later, karma catches up, and the others will pussy-grab you right back!

          1. I don’t know what to say, other than that was a pretty crazy screed that really didn’t have anything to do with what I said.

Why is it that any time you say something that is not solely focused on Trump and how bad he is and how he is somehow more bad than his predecessors (which is a ridiculous argument concocted in fantasy and nostalgia) there is a subset of people who always reply “but, what about the bad Orange man? Why do you love him so much?”.

            Seek help

            1. “…really didn’t have anything to do with what I said.”

Because you said nothing other than “orange man bad”, to speak of!

NOTHING is as stale as “orange man bad”!
(With the implied idea being that “anyone who says bad things about Orange Man, no matter HOW long and well-documented the list of Trump evils may be, such bad-things-sayer must be a stupid moron”).

Albert Einstein delivers a long lecture with 553 equations and tons of evidence. Conservative moron will say that Einstein said “stuff and stuff is relative”, and walk smugly away, thinking that they have “summarized” Einstein!

Conservative moron will ATTEMPT TO START to tour Holocaust museums and “summarize” by saying “Mustache Man Bad”!
Fucking stupid, smart-ass moronic conservatives STOP smugly posting vacuous “Orange Man Bad”, and I will stop posting my reply!

              1. I guess I’m just not clever enough to understand the hidden and super secret principles under girding all the “I Support Criminal Justice Reform and That’s Why I’m Supporting the Old Dude Who Pushed for Crime Bill and that Corrupt Prosecutor” that CATO has been pumping out recently.

I need Koch cash to understand the mental gymnastics required to justify such a god awful opinion.

        3. Sometimes presidents are so bad that the situation is clarified. Stop the hemorrhage first, eradicate capital gains taxes and healthcare for poor people later (you know, principles).

          1. You can vote however you like, but I don’t have to pretend like you care about criminal justice reform, because voting for Harris proves that not to be true.

            1. Okay. I vote for politicians who don’t 100% match my beliefs like about 100% of the time I’m voting, same as you. You seem to be suggesting that I ought to throw everything I believe away including my concern for the very survival of the country because Harris has an imperfect record. Which isn’t disingenuous trolling at all I’m sure.

              1. As if you *had* any “beliefs” other than orange man bad and I want my free shit.

                1. You’re the one who doesn’t want to pay taxes, so you’re the one who wants free shit, actually.

Most of the country will be voting on the basis of Orange Man Bad so seems as good a reason as any.

This stupid little meme of the far right seems to miss the fact that, indeed,
Orange Man Bad. Like it’s actually true and a more than valid reason to vote.

                  1. Tony is so unprincipled that I suspect he could get a job at Reason or some other Koch outlet. You already never skew far from the NYT editorial pages, so you should be a shoe-in at Koch world.

                    1. So what orange man good?

                    2. No. You’re just a joke.

                  2. You’re the one who doesn’t want to pay taxes, so you’re the one who wants free shit, actually.

A rare honest look into the mind of progressives. You get to keep what more of what you earned = free shit from the government .

                  3. You are literally supporting a cunt who withheld evidence, made up confessions, and falsified evidence.

I will play this like kamilla
“Tony told me he rapes people all the time. He should go to prison for 20 years”

The only difference is I’m a commenter not a DA, but I hope that some DA gets pissed at you and falsified evidence to send you to jail

  7. You don’t understand. Her vilification was meant to prevent criminals from realizing that backpage was cooperating with law enforcement.

  8. “IT WAS A DEBATE! Hahahahahahahahah, IT WAS A DEBATE! giggle snort chortle IT WAS A DEBATE!”

  9. Serious question, is this publication just a parody of what a shitty libertarian publication would complain about?

Normal person: The Democratic vice presidential nominee kept a man on death row and fought to allow his defense access to DNA testing

Reason: Sure, but what was her opinion on sex workers?

Normal person: Are fucking serious right now? She coordinated with her political donors at Planned Parenthood to jail a man for the crime of “undercover reporting”. The CA legislature even passed a new law to retroactively prosecute him.

Reason: Well, I don’t see anything wrong with that, because the NYT says that’s all on the up and up. But, what about sex workers?

    1. Don’t forget that that undercover reporting exposed Planned Murderhood for profiting off selling body parts of aborted babies.

  10. If there is going to be a law against sex work, the work that Harris did to get her current office ought to count and be prosecuted.

  11. Kamala Harris is a feminist pioneer, showing us that women can be just as good as men at being horrible, disgusting, psychotic politicians.

She’s a heroine, just like Cersei Lannister.

    1. Eh..I think Elizabeth Dole is owed that honor. Although, maybe Hillary Clinton? I don’t know. But they were both horrible well before Kamala. She’s just carrying on the torch.

      1. But none of them were ever Vice Presidential candidates, were they? Black-Hindi vice presidential candidates?

        Pioneer, I say.

        1. God damn it, you bested me.

      2. Tipper Gore and Nancy Reagan laid the ground work.

  12. You can beat the rap, but you can’t beat the ride.

  13. Kamala Harris is dishonest. But at least she’s nakedly and transparently dishonest, she’s not smart enough to hide her dishonesty.

If I were Donald Trump, I would be playing that “It was a debate” clip of her interview tongue bath with Stephen Colbert 24 hours a day. It epitomizes her fakery. Asked how she squared her attack on Biden then with her support for him now, how fucking hard would it have been for her to point out that well, obviously Joe and I don’t agree on everything, I’m not just some mindless Biden sycophant after all, I’m my own woman, but I didn’t actually call him a racist, I was merely pointing out that some of his past stances were problematic, but I’m sure he’s grown since then and learned from the experience and, after all, making mistakes is how we learn, it makes us better people, and anyway he’s still a million times better than Trump and blah, blah, blah, all that happy horseshit. I mean, how fucking hard is it to bullshit your way through an awkward question? But no, she goes straight to the laughing – “Ha, ha, ha! You didn’t actually believe any of that bullshit I was peddling did you?” She’s not even fucking smart enough to finesse a question that she had to have known was going to be asked.

Or so goddamn stupid she didn’t know that question was going to be asked, which I suspect was the real reason she gave such a horrible answer – Colbert was pitching her a softball question, giving her a chance to head off any criticism of her about-face on Biden and she fucking blew it.

    1. “Kamala Harris is dishonest. But at least she’s nakedly and transparently dishonest, she’s not smart enough to hide her dishonesty.”

When the case against Kamala can also serve as the case for Trump.

      1. It’s hard for me to think of Trump as dishonest when he tells such patently absurd whoppers that nobody could possibly believe them and he has to know that nobody could possibly believe them. He’s a fabulist, like Baron Munchausen, you laugh and you’re entertained by his ridiculous bullshit. I mean, c’mon, the world’s foremost authority on everything? If he said he was one of the world’s foremost authorities or maybe wanted to limit it to 5 or 6 things, I’d call him a liar, but everything? Nobody can believe that shit. Just like his claims to have invented the term “priming the pump”, never having ever done anything he’s had to ask God’s forgiveness for, or having a bigger inaugural crowd than Obama – simply absurdities not meant to be taken seriously.

Besides which, c’mon, Trump has the mentality of a four-year old, it’s not like you can hold him to the same standards as an adult.

        1. Did y’all know that about 1 in 10 men in certain areas of Asia, have the “Y” chromosome of Genghis Khan? And 1 in 200 planet-wide? Use this search-string in quotes:
“1 in 200 men direct descendants of Genghis Khan”
WHY is this relevant, you ask?
Well, ’cause The Donald has “the winning gene”, and wants to out-do this low-brow Genghis dude!! The Donald-breeding/cloning farms “over there” (in Afghanistanistanistanistan) are gonna fire up soon, I’m a tellin ‘ ya!!!
If’n ye do NOT believe me about the superiority of “The Donald’s” genes, look at the following quotes from that same Donald!!!
Quotes from The Donald in the “Anti Gravity” column in August 2017 “Scientific American” magazine follow:
“I have great genes and all that stuff, which I’m a believer in”,
“God helped me by giving me a certain brain”,
“I have a very, very high aptitude”,
“Maybe it’s just something you have. You know, you have the winning gene.”
Google the quotes, they are real…

          2. It’s a shame Squirrelly isn’t dead. He should try it.

  14. So is she Trump or Pence? No? She’s earned my vote!

    1. Which policy positions of Biden/Harris do you prefer over say… Jo Jorgensen?

      1. The policy of they could be in the White House come January and she can’t.

  15. Harris is nothing if not a weather-vane:
“On Prostitution, Another Kamala Harris Reversal”
“When Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) came out on Tuesday in favor of decriminalizing prostitution, she failed to mention that she had opposed it her entire career.
Harris most publicly opposed the idea of decriminalizing the oldest profession in 2008, when she called a proposal to do so in San Francisco “completely ridiculous” and argued it “would put a welcome mat out for pimps and prostitutes.” She rejected the notion that prostitution was a “victimless crime,” the New York Times reported, and said it “compromises the quality of life in a community.”…”

In fact, given the way she started her career, you might say she’s ‘experienced’ in the matter.

    1. Why is Senator Harris’s dating life something worth criticizing her over considering the guy you support is a self-described sexual predator?

What is his stance on prostitution? Are you saying Harris isn’t allowed to evolve on her positions? Do you even know if Trump has convictions about anything?

      1. “…considering the guy you support is a self-described sexual predator?”

You never do post without lying.

        1. “When you’re a star they let you do it.”

“Before a show, I’ll go backstage and everyone’s getting dressed, and everything else, and you know, no men are anywhere, and I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it,” he said. “You know, I’m inspecting because I want to make sure that everything is good.”

“You know, they’re standing there with no clothes. ‘Is everybody okay?’” he continued. “And you see these incredible looking women, and so, I sort of get away with things like that.”

According to interviews BuzzFeed News conducted with former Miss Teen USA contestants, Trump did just that in 1997. Four women who were competing in the pageant that year — including one who was 15 at the time — recalled that Trump walked into the dressing area while they were changing.

One of them called it “shocking” and “creepy” and said she rushed to cover herself. Another recalled that the contestants were “just scrambling to grab stuff… whatever garments they had.”

Another called it “really shocking,” saying, “We were all naked.”

          1. You are incapable of posting without lying.

            1. Actually I didn’t say anything I just quoted.

          2. He describes gold diggers throwing themselves at him and you condemn him. Biden is credibly accused of violent rape and you give him a pass.

Please commit suicide at your first opportunity. The world is far better without you in it.

      2. Imagine if Barack Obama had literally built his political career (lmao) persecuting gays. It’s not about Kamala Harris’s position “evolving”. She literally made her career out of prosecuting backpage.com. That and the drug war. I think people have a right to get some well deserved eye-rolling at Kamala Harris’s “”””””””””evolution”””””””””” on sex work, especially while her old office is still pursuing those same baloney charges she filed.

        1. I don’t put too much weight on an individual politician’s political history or even policy proposals. The Vice President doesn’t make policy. We’ll get whatever Congress can win votes on, and I highly doubt Biden will veto any criminal justice legislation that somehow makes it to his desk (and any impediment to that won’t come from Democrats but Republicans, of course, but as we all know they have no agency or responsibility for anything).

Not am I going to consider the VP nominee not being a cutting-edge radical on sex work a dealbreaker when the alternative is Trump. Do you know his position on sex work, apart from his gleeful participation in it?

          1. You are incapable of posting without lying.

            1. Tony’s a commie.
              Everything they’re about is lying.
The party of lies, doing the bidding of the father of lies.

          2. Trump hasn’t made it his life’s mission to lock people up over it, Harris has. There you go.

          3. I’m well aware of Mr. Trump’s proclivities and am under no illusion that he is anything other than a grifting scumbag. I have never and will never support anything to do with him. I am curious though why Trump’s history is apparently relevant when making a decision about him (which I agree it should be relevant) but when judging Democratic candidates their own history seems to instantly become entirely irrelevant. Does it not occur to you that the “I don’t care how bad my guy is, as long as he beats the other guy.” zeitgeist is how we got Donald Trump in the first place? If Donald Trump were a democrat would you suddenly be forgiving everything that he is and has been? Do you not have any kind of objective standard that you hold democratic candidates to?

            1. Because it’s uncomfortable for Tony to admit that Trump passed criminal justice reform, while Kamala was prosecuting the parents of truant students. It’s uncomfortable for Tony to admit that Biden has started more wars than Trump.

You don’t have to like Trump or even think these policies were effective to realize that there is literally no case for Harris or Biden without ignoring the entirety of their political careers and suspending your supposed principles in order to vote for them.

              1. Biden and Harris were not my first choice, and I don’t care if Trump passed one good law, because he’s an existential threat to law and civilization itself. I don’t know what you want from me because it seems as if you want me to say orange man good. But I’m really glad criminal justice is reformed and the prisons are emptying as we speak.

                1. I guess you cant read because he made it quite clear what he expect from you.

Nothing. You know your people are no better, but you don’t have the spine to admit it.

                  Read dummy.

                  1. My people are so much better. It’s why I don’t have to tie myself in knots and discard everything I’ve ever claimed to believe in order to justify my support. Not like those small government libertarians who couldn’t clutch their pearls hard enough over everything real and imagined Obama ever did but suddenly are just fine with someone 10 times more plainly incompetent, corrupt, and authoritarian.

                    1. You should die in agony. As should the other progtards. You’re all soulless slaver trash.

      3. This whole election is a game of pick your crazy, old, rich white sexual predator, while there’s entire multi-billion dollar media and lobbying industries built around pretending like that’s not what’s going on and making sure that you only get two choices. At what point are we willing to have a conversation about whether or not democracy might actually be a bad idea?

        1. Dosage makes the poison. Some democracy is a good thing. We’re taking way too much. We need to eliminate the Presidential Election Farce by going back to having state legislatures choose electors. Get rid of popular election of senators, too. The reconsider election of judges and prosecutors.

  16. Never underestimate the lengths that a tough on crime politician will go to make themselves look effective in the eyes of voters.

Which is why I find it interesting that Biden chose Harris given the current outrage on the Left. Unless she has had some sort of genuine epiphany since her days as a prosecutor, why would she push for anything more than superficial changes in policing? Given her reception by progressives, it seems I’m not the only one thinking that.

As for Backpage, it does sound as if it was complying with the police on child prostitution. But I wonder if that cooperation carried over as equally to adult prostitution. Also, was it merely a game of whack-a-mole with lower level criminals and that the folks running the schemes considered it acceptable losses? If there was any gray area in culpability, I could see why a hungry prosecutor would pounce.

    1. I guess they’re thinking she’s immune to criticism now that Biden has declared her Black.

  17. There is a bit of counterintuitive politics going on. You might imagine that, faced with good polls and a widely hated opponent, Biden would grab whatever he could for the left. Such an opportunity. Except what would a Warren or AOC bring to the table as VP except a symbolic nod to the left? The VP doesn’t make any policy.

Instead, faced with a widely hated opponent that everyone on the left is motivated to oust from office regardless of what Biden gives them, he is free to pick someone you can’t credibly call too easy on the blacks or too radical on economic policy. Neutralizing some of the hysterical smears is actually something, unlike giving a sop to the Bernies, as needy as they may usually be.

    1. It comes down to playing the odds that Harris does more to suppress fears by moderates that Biden is weak on crime versus the chance that progressives will sit home and pout. That’s why you see so many high ranking Dems pleading for progressives to come out and vote, even if they’re holding their noses while doing so. For once, they’re trying to prevent themselves from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

      1. I think it has more to do with the fact that no one expects Biden to serve his full term. Harris got chosen by committee to be President of the United States less than 90 days before an election.

        1. I vaguely recall a story in Politico making the same assertion. You’re probably correct.

What is interesting is that a lot of progressives were peeved over alleged interference by the party elite between Clinton and Sanders during the last election. Yet here we are with their hands potentially on the controls again.

          1. Their hands never leave the controls.

  20. There is a much more sinister part to this story. In 2013, former Navy Seal and LAPD officer Christopher Doerner went to the press with information about Backpage. Shortly thereafter, Harris’s office put out information that Doerner was armed and dangerous, launching a trigger-happy manhunt throughout Southern California. It ended with Doerner getting burned alive in a Big Bear cabin – the Sheriff dispatch audio caught his final moments, and it is very hard to listen to. The question is: what did Doerner know about Backpage that was so dangerous to Harris? If we look at how Harris got her start as Willie Brown’s “companion” … is it possible that Harris once used Backpage’s services, and that the raids on Backpage’s office were really a means to confiscate the print records that might expose inconvenient truths about Harris’s past – something Doerner may have kept souveniers of?
