Megan McArdle: Trump's D.C. Takeover Is Just the Beginning
The Washington Post columnist joins the show to discuss crime in D.C. and Trump's deployment of federal troops.
How bad is crime and disorder in Washington, D.C.? Just asking questions.
Local crime became a national issue following the assault of Edward Coristine—a former staffer at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) who is also known as "Big Balls"—during an alleged carjacking. Trump reacted on Truth Social, saying, "Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control" and promised to "exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City" following the assault. The capital is now occupied by members of the National Guard, and Trump has said that although they are starting with D.C., "this will go further" and named other cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore.
Some Democrats, like Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D–Md.), have said Trump is exaggerating.
Megan McArdle, a D.C. resident and Washington Post columnist, says Democrats are wrong to downplay the city's crime problem and general public disorder. She thinks the failures of Democratic governance and the police pullback following the 2020 George Floyd protests have created an atmosphere of public support for Trump's actions, and she fears that the appetite for more federal intervention that pushes the limits of the Constitution will only grow stronger if politicians fail to confront these problems in their cities.
It's a challenging conversation between three people who care about civil liberties and rule of law, as well as safety and the protection of property. We don't want to demonize police, nor do we want to let them abuse their power. We don't want criminals to wreck our cities, nor do we want to lock up delinquent teens—like the ones who allegedly assaulted Big Balls—and throw away the key. We don't want lawlessness, nor militarized police operating under permanent emergency powers.
How to properly balance all of these concerns is, perhaps, the political question of our time. And we hope this discussion is a step toward providing some answers to it.

(D)C was allowed to be taken over by violent criminals via the political party that has had a near monopoly there. That is now changing.
But what about DuE pRoCeSs?
No murder in a full week for D.C. what happened to our freedoms.
Wonder how the crime rate has fared in adjacent PG County, MD.
Now do Baltimore aka Bodymore
Just wondering if the criminals not arrested have relocated a few miles away.
I’m sure those criminals will find a friend in Baltimore democrat prosecutors.
Going after violent criminals is exactly what evil dictators do, just like Hitler and Stalin.

Wait until they hear even the 9th circuit understands what temporary means.

First they came for the pedos and I said nothing, because I was not sbp.
Then they came for the arsonist, and I said nothing because I was not antifa.
Then they came for the murderers and I said nothing because I'm not in a gang.
Hey life is pretty good now!
How dare norms be broken!!
Libertarians for safety before rights. The warm embrace of big benevolent government will make us feel nice and cozy, and that's what matters above all.
Full retard achieved shrike lol.
Anarchotyranny isnt freedom. It is a device used by communists such as yourself to bring down society.
It is clear you don't believe in property rights or even self defense.
What freedoms are yoi losing from having a cop on the street. More difficult for you to lure a child into a van?
Always funny watching you fucks demand subservienxe to criminals and no accountability for violating rights or property.
Can't wait for you to be in prison for your child porn. Bet you'll be calling for guards a lot.
The truth is...nobody's rights are being violated. There are no road blocks ,"show me your papers please or STASI style police force arresting people for bad speak, like they do in the U.K.
People are free to go as they please without fear of being robbed, raped, shot , assaulted or murdered.
Removing the failed, DEI police chief who had no idea what "chain of command" was, is a start.
Remember when she was Jane Galt?
Remember when she wouldn't give a rag like the Washington Post the time of day?
What happened?
She’s managed to be on the WaPo payroll and not publish anything of note the entire time…that’s pretty impressive!!

What's next, attacking Jews in public?
Shutting down commerce and telling people to stay home?
Censoring Americans who disagree with democrats?
Arresting school moms?
We must protect the freedom of criminals before they come after the rest of us.
Forcing people to take a deadly ineffective vaxx.
Shutting down public education for two years.
Destroying tens of thousands of mom and pop businesses.
That's just crazy talk. It could never happen here. Libertarians like Ron Bailey would scream their heads off.
I find it very weird they discuss the potential political impact against Trump which they characterize as executive authoritarianism but never discuss the potential impact of this showing the public that accepting high crime rates is a choice made by local left wing government which can be changed.
They do criticize various subsets for their attitudes (for example people saying those opposed to crime are cowardly and this is part of living in a city). But when it comes to political results they aren't willing to even consider any outcome other than the one they prefer. But compare this to immigration. Regardless of which side of immigration you support you have to understand Trump made it 100% obvious mass illegal immigration was a policy choice enacted by Dems. The decades of Dems and the media presenting this as an intractable problem was a lie so they could continue the policy. If Trump can do the same with crime he will discredit left wing governance for the next 50 years.
The Jeff Bezos Post has sunk to the same low level of neo- journalism as the N.Y. Times more appropriately known as the N.Y. Slimes.
Both papers as such are nearly worthless as they are a waste of paper and ink.
The MSM is nothing more than an echo chamber, spewing rubbish passed through the trash heap CIA.
No one should take anything they print as being true or factual or without bias.
"The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers." Thomas Jefferson.
Well done. Sums it up nicely.
Libertarians for the police state. LOL you guys are hilarious.

Where? What comment are you imagining shrike?
Where are these posts?
First few in this thread. Supporting military deployment if it reduces crime. Because safety is what matters most.
Are you truly free living in a city riddled with crime?
It is amazing watching these communists go to bat for violation of rights on the populace for criminals.
Nope, Bari Weiss defended Tom Cotton because slaughtering innocent Muslims is what drives the neocons. Cotton is a Muslim slaughterer and so she defends his voice. Weiss is a bi-neocon…sometimes she’s flicking her bean she dreams of Bush…other times she dreams of Dick!
What happened to your original account?
Bi-neocon?? That is a well crafted joke about politics! UATX…because Priestep graduated from Hillsdale! 😉
Bushpig, what happened to your original account?
What rights did you lose having a military person standing around?
The police state, like those walls that were on the verge of closing in, is always around the corner.

Points out the cause. Makes no value judgement of the response.

Sorry, where’s the vocal support of a police state again?
yeah...sure.
Democrats started the Defund the Police right after George Floyd died (you can check it in Google trends) allegedly because of "systemic racism" and all police are "racists".
They were lying and came up with the Defund movement because the police chief, mayor and governor all were Democrats in charge of Derek Chauvin and the police force, and it showed Democrats use the police to oppress blacks and others, and they failed in their job to run the police correctly because they liked it that way.
People fell for this distraction from Democratic responsibility for Floyd's death. Anyone claiming "systemic racism" exists is saying they are racists and should not be in government. It's absurd.
The only one responsible for Floyd's death was.....George Floyd.
Look, this isn't rocket science. The balance between liberty and police is easy to manage.
It's like giving a teenager the keys to the car. "I'm trusting you with this," you tell them. And so long as that trust isn't violated, you keep giving them the keys.
But as soon as it is, you take those keys away. For a time, at least. The teen will moan and whine and complain and maybe even cry - but you stand fast against it. He's got a lesson to learn, and if losing the keys to the car for awhile is what it takes to drum it into his head, then so be it. He gets it back when he's shown sufficient accountability and repentance for his breach of your trust.
Or, another example might be the animals escaping from the zoo. They're causing all manner of havoc around town. Well, here's the thing - animals don't speak English and they don't care about what you're saying and doing. But you can't just have a bunch of animals running loose in the city causing untold damage and harm, and something's got to be done. So, shoot them with a dart, tie them up, and cart them back off to the zoo. PETA will gnash their teeth and Karens will call the manager. You give them both the finger and solve the problem. Does that mean we establish a permanent force to deal with escaped zoo animals? No. We bring them in when they're needed after things have gotten out of hand, and then we dismiss them once order is restored.
The world likes Balance. DC along with every other Democract city tipped (and by "tipped" I mean "dropped a brick on") the scales towards Chaos. If that means an excess of Order is needed to rebalance it, then so be it. Then start easing back the weight on both sides simultaneously while the scales are in balance.
Violent crime and fentanyl deaths spiked in April 2020 before the George Floyd protests…McCardle is a dumb cunt.
I didn't say anything about St. Jorge the Fentanyl Martyr. Don't know who you were replying to, but it wasn't me.
Also, language.
Stupid cunt…better??
Why do you feel compelled to do that? What purpose does it serve?
He’s a pathological liar and a pedophile. Possibly other issues going on. You’re asking something like that to be cordial. This could be like if White Mike criticized hitler for not putting the toilet seat down after using.
I unsubscribed from this podcast awhile ago. Having on a wapo stenographer reassures me.
She basically steals money from Bezos…most people have forgotten she ever existed.
Pretty soon he will be federalizing all of the federal government's federal districts?
I couldn't help but make an observation while watching this video collaboration on topic.
If you don't want people on streets being weird, it seems to me that the job of innovators and entrepreneurs extends to providing Houses of business such as entertainment in an effort to keep streets as clean as practical by drawing people in from the streets for whatever socially-conducive purpose so contrived.
For example, junkies inside of a comedy club given a space of their own (free of charge meaning provisioned seating) may have a natural place. In exchange for bearing jokes, they can be fed and keep a civil appearance by bearing the brunt of humor. They may feel a sort of belonging in society and amid the crowd. A role inside of a bar likewise is not necessarily very demanding.
But however you contrive an effort to open a business and keep streetwalkers entertained, don't say it couldn't work. No, not here : D
Using a suited military such as the National Guard in DC, there seems to be acceptable precedent if you accept NG to be a state-managed branch of the militia as equally as you accept the police to be that, likewise.
It seems to me that so long as a state governor can call the branch of service into action, then it may be used in a law enforcement fashion.
Duly noted, authors in diverse articles (Mexican policing or in Washington, DC, for example) mention that the military is not suited to policing as we know and expect it. For example, police are expected to comply with law of the state, respect rights as courts have decided, and read Miranda rights when arresting.
And when they do not follow their code, we read apparent horror stories. Seeing someone murdered by cop for having actually committed no physical crime other than run away looks vividly brutal, for example, if the camera were to be believed.
But whereas police have a purpose to police the given neighborhood or territory, they do so out of routine.
When dropping military policing into the mix, expecting routine purpose seems extraneous. No, military comes in to clean up the area -- sort of like EMS after riots -- not to carry victims into screened medical tents but to secure the designated area from dangerous combatants.
Police really do not belong out there outnumbered, fighting combatants. And therefore, another sort of training may be considered more suited to the task.
Military training may also be considered suited to cover large areas methodologically in search of fugitives from justice in a short time. Whereas, police would normally be suited to finding persons who have not yet been arrested.
All opinions mine.
