Angela McArdle: What Role Did the Libertarian Party Play in Freeing Ross Ulbricht?
The Libertarian Party national chair talks about the role the party played in securing a presidential pardon for Ulbricht on the latest episode of Just Asking Questions.
Today's bonus episode of Just Asking Questions is a conversation with Libertarian Party National Chair Angela McArdle about the role the party played in securing a presidential pardon for Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web marketplace Silk Road. Ulbricht, who entered prison at age 29 and walked out at age 40, had served 11 years of a double life sentence with no possibility of parole.
Ulbricht started Silk Road as an idealistic libertarian experiment, describing on his LinkedIn profile his ambition to create "an economic simulation to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force." The site was only accessible through the anonymizing network known as Tor, and transactions for all sorts of illegal drugs were made in bitcoin. For all these reasons, Ulbricht became a kind of libertarian icon.
The Free Ross movement was tirelessly spearheaded by Ulbricht's mother, Lyn, and championed by the libertarian movement and its many institutions and publications, including Reason magazine, for the past decade. This decade-long effort culminated in a dramatic turn of events during the Libertarian National Convention last year, where Trump appeared and gave a speech in which he promised to free Ulbricht.
Reason produced a 15-minute video essay describing Ulbricht's case in detail and how this deal came to be, which we'll also link in the description. During the production of that, I interviewed McArdle, who had met with Trump and told him that freeing Ulbricht was a major priority for libertarians.
For those of you who don't follow third-party political drama, McArdle has been a polarizing chair who led the so-called "takeover" of the Libertarian Party by a faction called the Mises Caucus. Her unorthodox strategy, aggressive messaging, and leadership style have generated constant controversy within the broader libertarian movement. Reason has produced several documentaries and interviews on those developments as well.
This is the full conversation that Reason conducted with McArdle before the inauguration on December 13, 2024, about what her conversation with Trump was like, how the meeting came about in the first place, and what the terms of the deal actually were. It also includes some discussion about the state of the Libertarian Party and McArdle's future within it.

None, trump pardoned ross
Angela McArdle's role >> Chase Oliver's role, that's for sure.
Oliver is one of these guys who glommed onto the liberty movement because it accepts and validates his personal lifestyle choices, but who doesn't even remotely understand the basic, fundamental core principles. He would be an almost perfect fit on Mangu's Reason staff.
The Libertarian party plays no role in anything.
Trump was so fearful of being booed by 1% of the electorate they forced him into this pardon.
What an inflated ego you have! (L) got 0.4% of the vote
The reality is that Trump wanted support from libertarians and even though he didn't get the support of the Libertarian party, he did win over a fair number of libertarians.
Angela Mcardle's offer to other presidential candidates was a stroke of genus and did more for getting libertarian ideas heard than the past 40 years combined. Her meeting with Trump is proof that Trump was listening to libertarian concerns even though Trump is not a libertarian.
Trump wisely pardoned Ross Ulbricht with the hope that it will garner more support from libertarians.
Although I don't consider myself to have been won over by Trump, I strongly believe that the Democratic administrations have done far more irreparable harm to the United States over the decades than Trump personally will ever - or COULD ever - do. I may yet be proven wrong, but so far I see nothing that could change my opinion that Trump is the far lesser of the two evils we were presented with. I continue to long for the permanent destruction of the two-party election system, but until then I prefer the guy who is breaking government stuff chaotically and driving the socialists into a sputtering incoherent impotent rage.
"I prefer the guy who is breaking government stuff chaotically and driving the socialists into a sputtering incoherent impotent rage."
AMEN.
It’s true. The democrats are desperately and pathetically flailing right now. With no end in sight. They are destroying themselves. So let them. It might just save Americans from having to go to war them.
I could have sworn sarc said he would praise Trump for freeing Ross. Very quiet from him yet in other threads. Weird.
Probably because he's a liar.
And a worthless drunk.
Did you watch the video?
McArdle not-so-subtly points out that part of the reason she's not coming back is because (she plans to have another kid and...) she's gotten death threats from Reason readers.
I could understand someone feeling sorry about issuing death threats against someone else who later became instrumental in the freeing of Ross Ulbricht, but their sorrow wouldn't really have any bearing on the degree to which I would enjoy breaking their legs.
What, did they threaten to slap her to death with their hankies?

You didn't screw up your rotator cuff patting yourselves too hard on the back, did you?
McArdle seems to have played a role.
The Libertarian Party did not. Reason most definitely did not.
How about Reason convinces Trump to release a Lou Reed stamp?
That would be proof Trump actually listens to you
Reason misses the big story about the scandal-ridden LP Chair:
Jake Porter of jakeporter.substack.com revealed that in 2024 the LNC paid over $45,000 to a shell corporation belonging to Austin Padgett. Austin Padgett is McArdle’s boyfriend and the father of her son.
There is a record of direct and indirect financial transfers from the LNC, all seemingly to Austin Padgett. From August 2023 to January 2024 Padgett received $32,465.38 directly from Libertarian Party coffers. In January 2024 these payments stopped. Soon thereafter, in February 2024 the Libertarian National Committee began paying Freedom Calls, LLC for “Fundraising Expenses” including merchandise, advertising, software, and telemarketing. Payments are dated from February 9, 2024 to November 21, 2024. Their total comes to $45,600.
Finally, in October and November 2024, Swing Vote Strategist was paid a total of $12,000 by the Kennedy Victory Fund. The Kennedy Victory Fund is the Joint Fundraising Committee of which the LNC was the largest generator of money, so these are substantially libertarian funds. Swing Vote Strategist appears to share an address with Angela McArdle’s Libertarian Unity PAC.
While the purposes of the expenditures are nominally appropriate for a political operation, a rationale for choosing a Padgett-operated group to perform the services is inapparent.
The total of Libertarian funds directly to Padgett and to Padgett-incorporated companies comes to more than $90,000.
