Connor Boyack and Corey DeAngelis: Why K-12 Education Sucks and How To Fix It
The authors of Mediocrity say it's well past time to end "factory schooling" and set kids free to learn.
Forty years ago, the National Commission on Excellence in Education published A Nation At Risk: The Imperative For Educational Reform, a scathing indictment of public K-12 schools in America. "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war," announced the report's authors, who included Nobel Prize–winning chemist Glenn T. Seaborg and Yale University President A. Bartlett Giamatti. The report catalyzed massive increases in per-pupil spending, standardized testing, and "common core" style curricula. Yet by almost every measure, educational outcomes are no better than they were in 1983.
In Mediocrity: 40 Ways Government Schools Are Failing Today's Students, the Libertas Institute's Connor Boyack and the American Federation for Children's Corey DeAngelis outline what's wrong with the ways our public schools function—and they offer concrete solutions to improve outcomes for children.
In this podcast version of The Reason Livestream, I talk with Boyack and DeAngelis about why they support maximizing parental rights through education savings accounts (ESAs), disagree with conservative Republicans who want to ban critical race theory and other controversial concepts, and believe that the end of "factory schooling" will vastly improve the civic life of the United States of America.

O/T - An old school Reason-style article from CNN (I know, I'm as shocked as you) - 2 men disappear 3 months apart, after being picked up by the same deputy, who for some reason went 3 years without making a single arrest.

Professional educators who taught actual subjects were replaced with activist groomers who teach race grievence and correct answers are oppression.

"Why K-12 Education Sucks"
Because the government runs it.
Bingo.
Public schools cannot be “fixed” because the problems are a “feature,” not a defect.
Mandate universal school vouchers payable to whoever teaches the child - by the class (ie “Algebra II”); by the topic (ie “Polynomial Expressions”); and even by the lesson. It simply requires some system similar in function to Uber, allowing parents to match their kids’ education needs to teachers and classes. It would require validation of the identity of every teacher, parent, child (incidentally eliminating illegal aliens) and would allow 360 degree feedback of every participant. Teachers empowered to decline any student for any reason. Perhaps keep a vestige of public schools for incorrigible students - or perhaps business models would emerge to serve them, too. No “department of education;” no “school boards;” no “administrators;” etc. - all the money goes towards education. No payment until each child demonstrates proficiency in the course material taught through controlled testing centers - the bad teachers will disappear because they will never get paid and will receive poor feedback, while good teachers will make more than before.
Real solutions are not difficult. Demunists oppose real solutions.
Or.. If you cannot afford education for your children please visit your *local* welfare office. Gov-Funding (Socialism) has a running record in every nation as the roots of a tyrannical government. Seems the "armed-theft" careers think they own what they steal these days.
Of course Reason will condemn any politician who wants to reform education. They’ll use open borders or whatever other excuse, but we all know Reason will end up denouncing any reformers.
Not all k-12 education actually sucks. Go to a wealthy community and check out the schools there, and usually things are running well. So what is the real issue? That which shall not be named?
I agree with the author. Educational systems in different countries have their advantages and disadvantages, but nevertheless, so far, mankind has not come up with anything better. Although, it is worth noting that with the development of information technology, such online educational platforms as https://buyinternalassessment.com/ in which each student can get the necessary help in writing, are increasingly appearing. This is a fairly effective and modern approach that allows you to improve your intellectual abilities and gain useful experience.
