Ethan Nadelmann: How To Legalize All Drugs!
Q&A about the future of drug policy, drug use, and drug culture.

Every Thursday at Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern, Zach Weissmueller and I go live at YouTube and Facebook with great thinkers, activists, politicians, entrepreneurs, policymakers and other people who are central to the world in which we live. We're excited to present the audio of those conversations as bonus episodes of the Reason Interview podcast.
This time around, we talked with Ethan Nadelmann, the former head of the Drug Policy Alliance and the host of the excellent Psychoactive podcast. Ethan is one of the the main reasons we live in a world where legal marijuana is increasingly available for adults—and why other drugs are being decriminalized and legalized too.
The main was whether we should legalize all drugs and, if so, how best to go about it? It's an in-depth conversation about all aspects of drug policy, drug use, and drug culture, including decriminalization versus legalization, addiction and treatment programs, and the effects of reforms in Portugal and elsewhere around the world.

Enforce the NAP and it'll work itself out.
"If we legalize all drugs, they'll be safer because we'll know what's in them!"
"Why"
"Because... they'll be regulated by the FDA, like Oxycontin."
The NAP doesn't allow for an FDA.
Enforcing the NAP means eliminating social security, Medicare, Medicaid, disability programs, welfare, and other social programs.
Sure, do that and also legalize drugs!
Isn't that libertarianism?
Let's not only legalize all drugs, but provide them in unlimited quantities for free, in special centers in remote locations. We can even provide one-way transportation. In six months, the "drug problem" (and the homeless and street crime problems) will take care of themselves, at a far lower cost than what we spend now.
With narcan injections as far as the eye can see so we can keep them alive to come back tomorrow. Progress!
Everyone carrying a gun would solve the problem and be way cheaper.
Because it's been a Democrat talking point for so long, it's kind of ironic that the Republicans that run my state have, in the last couple of years, legalized medical and then recreational marijuana use, and are currently in the process of eliminating the disparity in in penalties for powdered vs crack cocaine use / possession.
Baby steps, but at least they are steps.
Of course, they are still following the mantra of 'legalize, regulate, and then tax the hell out of . . . ' - We have a ballot measure on Tuesday to add an additional 3% tax to legal MJ sales to fund police or libraries or some shit, which I will obviously vote against, but will probably pass.
How else do you get the votes than by cutting them in on the action?

My stupid state voted against rec 60/40.
Sure, legalize it AND eliminate eligibility for all government programs for anybody who had ever used drugs. Also, strictly enforce vagrancy laws.
But legalizing drugs while socializing the costs of drug use is not acceptable.
+100000; The very manipulation behind the 'affordable' camp.
If the Gov-Guns gets to "make it affordable" they get to own/regulate it to death too and ironically make it UN-affordable in the process.
Yes. The big concern I would have with legalization is “this is going to be run by the government. The government, on its own showing, cannot turn a profit from a legal whorehouse. They could screw up a picnic.”
Exactly...... ...because GUNS don't make sh*t.
And 'government' is just a monopoly of Gun-Force.
Ethan Nadelmann is very smart and has made America far better by sharply reduced arrests, prosecutions, incarcerations, mandatory drug treatment programs/propaganda.
Many thanks.
NOYB2: Tobacco and alcohol are legal and (relatively) inexpensive, but yet we have always socialized the costs of the myriad types of cancer caused by tobacco use and the costs of cirrhosis and wet-brain caused by use of alcohol. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet is legal in some states, but yet the costs of severe but nonlethal head injuries have always been socialized. Intentional over-consumption of processed foods containing large amounts of sugars, fats, and calories is legal, even encouraged by low prices, but yet we have always socialized the costs of the metabolic syndromes, type 2 diabetes, and obesity caused by bad diets. So stop kidding yourself--we can, we do, and we will socialize the costs of anything if the big profits will go to American corporations and the shareholder class instead of to foreign cartels.
The people never gave the Nazi's authority to subsidize healthcare.
Growing Nazism because Nazism fails is a self-inflicted destructive path.
All of this was legal as sea salt before 1907. Yet where are the headline-grabbing confederate school classrooms riddled with Gatling guns? Where are the newspaper archive stories about starving tobacco farmers who lost their savings to hemp harvesters? Violence, economic crashes and actual World War pestilence blossoms in the footsteps of ignorant, superstitious fanaticism and its witch-burning Bozos. Why has the initiation of deadly force brought the Second Coming of Herod and not Jesus?
Fantastic! I love the ideas you bring here. I bet there are many readers of your blog who have changed their point of view after reading it!
