Ken Burns, Lynn Novick: How Closed Borders Helped Facilitate the Holocaust
A new PBS series underscores the long, deadly shadow cast by xenophobia, antisemitism, and restrictive immigration laws.

Did you know that Otto Frank, the father of Anne, repeatedly tried to emigrate with his family to the United States after the Nazis came to power in his native Germany? Each attempt failed due to American immigration restrictions put into place in the 1920s.
Two-thirds of European Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II in a systematic, relentless process that still exceeds our ability to comprehend its origins and consequences. The Final Solution, which was the Nazi plan to exterminate all European Jews, wasn't implemented until 1942, but Hitler's government had begun openly dehumanizing, harassing, and attacking Jews upon taking power nine years earlier.
Even when the Nazi death machine kicked into high gear, America kept its doors mostly closed to Jews such as the Franks, as filmmakers Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein recount in The U.S. and the Holocaust, a new three-part documentary series on PBS.
Some lobbied to open the country to refugees in the run-up to war, but anti-immigration legislation, the economic devastation of the Depression, incredulity toward a press that had trafficked in false atrocity accounts during World War I, and deep-seated antisemitism, especially in Franklin D. Roosevelt's State Department, combined to thwart those efforts.
I talked with Burns and Novick about why a nation of immigrants remains so deeply ambivalent about newcomers and the lessons that 21st-century America should draw from our country's response in the lead-up to the Holocaust.

Sounds like it wasn't so much closed boarders as it was leftists that enabled the holocost
Uh, the Nazis murdered Jews and every real Jew is a left-winger who consistently voted Democrat, or so the ADL tells me.
I work from home providing various internet services for an hourly rate of $80 USD. I never thought it would be possible, but my trustworthy friend persuaded (amu-03) me to take the opportunity after telling me how she quickly earned 13,000 dollars in just four weeks while working on the greatest project. Germany and Russia seemed to think most of Europe was open borders.
Ghengis khan should be the patron saint of open borders. Also rape.
Pretty sure The Khanate of The Golden Hoarde didn't have a fleet of ships and pretty sure the S.S. St. Louis wouldn't have been one of their ships either.
Pretty sure the S.S. St. Louis wasn't Das Boot or Storozhevoy.
Why don't you quote the part of the Constitution that requires us to get involved in other countries problems? That would be a pretty good find, given the usual libertarian position that government isn't even obliged to do fuck all for its own citizens.
Immigration policy does not equal "getting involved in other country's problems."
Veeeeery interesting that you use the word "problems" here.
And veeeeery interesting that you evidently think people escaping to a freer place equals womb-to-tomb Welfare Statism, as if freedom is a favor.
Fuck Off, Witch-Burning Nazi!
"Immigration policy does not equal “getting involved in other country’s problems.”..."
You are correct, but changing immigration policy to ameliorate problems caused by other countries policies does.
Were you hoping no one would notice that sleight of hand?
I love how they blame the state department but give FDR a pass.
“The emperor doesn’t know!”
That's Saint Franklin, dude.
To be fair, he got elected four times by making most people – even people with contradictory goals – think he was on their side.
We all know trump tricked fdr
Just reading "Twilight of the Gods", Toll. He lays the blame for Trueman's lack of preparation on Leahy, totally absolving Leahy's boss, who both knew well he was dying and could have directed Leahy to include Trueman in the briefings. In a just world, FDR would have been shunned for criminal negligence in not preparing his successor.
He (Toll) then goes on to claim that FDR's death was 'universally' mourned. Not by some accounts.
Not bad as a military history, but keep the salt-shaker handy.
"The striped-pants boys" as Truman called them.
For all we know, FDR had them too, but the sycophantic media of the day never let anybody in on it.
Yeah this is definitely what we Koch / Reason libertarians should go with — We demand open borders because we don't want to see another Holocaust.
Of course the real reason is we want our billionaire benefactor Charles Koch to get even richer, and giving him access to cost-effective foreign-born labor (especially Mexicans) is the easiest way to accomplish that. Sadly, not everyone can be persuaded by appealing to Mr. Koch's net worth. In such cases it's morally justified to tell a little white lie and pretend we're motivated by sympathy for Holocaust victims or slaves or whatever.
#CheapLaborAboveAll
Disaffected, obsolete, inconsequential, right-wing bigots are among my favorite faux libertarians . . . and no problem the culture war and replacement are not solving every day.
Cry harder, faggot.
Speaking of Nazis who want to eradicate the other...
Needs moar homophobic throat fucking.
You do know that your beloved Ivy League Academia also imposed quotas on admissions, professorships, and advancement for Jews, right?
Soooo…Should you open wider for yourself? 🙂
Carry on, Klinger…And let us know when you actually reach yourself so you’ll never leave the house or show up here again!
I watched episodes one and two - quite a depressing way to spend an afternoon. Human nature being what it is, the consequences of irrationality and conformity should provide a lesson for us now and in the future. What struck me, too, was seeing twenty or thirty Jewish men being put in a truck by a couple of armed Nazis, and not fighting back. And a string of men running toward the pit where they will be shot like the groups in front of them. I kept almost shouting "fight back damned you; gouge a guard's eyes out or something. Don't go passively into eternal oblivion."
>>America kept its doors mostly closed
Franklin Roosevelt had the key around his neck.
Right near the pen and phone.
If only Comrade Franklin had known! It was all those dirty Republicans in his administration who kept this hidden from him.
They distracted FDR from the Jew problem by bamboozling him into locking up dirty Jap-Americans.
A great work of historical fiction. Feelgood mockumentary of the year.

He ain't getting anywhere near my rod and I want none of his.
When I tell him "Fuck Off, Nazi!" I mean away from me!
Intelligence test: Which one of these does not belong—xenophobia, antisemitism, and restrictive immigration laws.
The existence of a border is *checks notes* racist.
>secure borders helped the no no Germans...
Fukkin based!
There's only one alternative to existing policy, and that's to totally close the border.
You don't want to close the border, do you?
/sarc
Yes, temporarily, while we get the invasion under control.
Two weeks to slow the spread.
The way this is going 50 years from now WW2 was fought to free the Jews.
I hear Ken Burns next project is "The Rape of Martha's Vineyard". Barack Obama will narrate.
It is a shame that USA immigration policy was restrictive in the 1930's and 1940's. It is also disgraceful that the UK blocked immigration to prestate Israel at the time.
Just finished watching the last episode. Solid up to the last 10 minutes or so. Tying the holocaust to January 6th? What fucking bullshit.
They knew what they were doing.
The Nazis or Ken Burns?
Yes.
Stupid leftist is as stupid leftist does.
Well the Jewish prisoners in the camps were manufacturing war materials for the Nazis which were used to kill US soldiers so technically they were our enemies.
Are you the enemy because your Taxdollars go toward the destruction of our prosperity, freedom, and even lives in war and because you don't violently resist the IRS?
And the first batches of the V-2s intended for the British were riddled with defects and even blew up on the platform! Don't suppose that could have been sabotage by the slave workers?
And wouldn't it be good if you actually thought and studied before you posted your shit?

This shit reminds me of an interview I heard like decades ago... back in the 90s on NPR, where some hippie tech professor at a University said... it's hard to say this with a straight face... that he ran a computer lab, but he didn't believe in security. That the existence of security fostered a sense of hostility. Unfortunately, after dozens of disastrous events in the computer lab, they finally had to implement some passwords on the computers. But he still didn't believe in security. He was literally able to believe two opposing ideas at once.
This is EXACTLY the kind of Utopian Bullshit the constant whinge about "closed borders" mirrors.
Borders shouldn't be closed, maaan.
Hey maaaan, sending those migrants to Martha's Vineyard was wrong, maaan.
"What's a Martha's Vineyard? I just see a vast stretch of Earth from horizon to horizon."
> where some hippie tech professor at a University said… it’s hard to say this with a straight face… that he ran a computer lab, but he didn’t believe in security. That the existence of security fostered a sense of hostility. Unfortunately, after dozens of disastrous events in the computer lab, they finally had to implement some passwords on the computers. But he still didn’t believe in security. He was literally able to believe two opposing ideas at once.
That was Richard Stallman. Not a professor, just a dude who won the MacArthur Prize. Famous guy, big in the Unix and free software space, irascible, I've butted horns with him many a time.
Basically he did not believe in passwords because he was radical free speech, free everything. He would even use a single space as his password when required to do so. But some incidents forced him to change his mind, and he will sometimes lecture on the unfortunate nature of human nature.
But the Nazis created the original Schengen Area. Hitler dreamed of a Europe where an übermensch could travel from Brittany to the Volga without crossing a single border.
If only that dratted conservative Churchill hadn't got in his way.
The only problem is, those Untermenschen couldn’t pass freely (operative term for Libertarians.) Nor would they be free anywhere they were sent. (Again, operative term.)
Ken Burns should stick to baseball.
If he redid the baseball documentary, it would still close with January 6th, and Fauci would be described as the greatest pitcher of the modern era.
I'm not that old, but even as I kid I sometimes ran into those who called Jews "Jesus killers". So while we are not Germany, the seeds of antisemitism are still here ready to sprout into violent weeds. And most conspiracy theories tend to have antisemitism deep in their core, with QAnon being no exception.
The idea of a holocaust happening here is ridiculous, but we have seen antisemitic violence break out on occasion. And not just at alt-right events. The Left can be even more virulently antisemitic. So while it can't happen here, that doesn't mean we can let our guard down.
The Vatican finally gave up that meme, but it took 'em 2000 Goddamn years to do it. Even then, there are elephant graveyarders in the Catholic Laity and in Protestantism and Islam who still say this.
Meanwhile, I'm selling roadkill concessions in the Colluseum trying to tell people that you can't kill somebody who never existed.
But did you run into people like this current Jew:
Gary Krupp, Jewish Founder of Pave the Way Foundation, Speaks on Misunderstood Wartime Pope
Krupp: He was neutral. The Vatican had to retain its neutrality. Consequently the Catholic Church under Pius XII may have saved what was estimated at about 800,000 Jews and Jewish lives … But it’s the actions of the Roman Catholic Church under the papacy of Pope Pius XII that did this!
What would have mitigated the Holocaust should have been France growing some balls and throwing the miniscule German Army out of the Rhineland in 1936.
Exactly.
That and every Jewish household having at least one Mauser and 1000 rounds per household.
Awesome! Yet another mockumentary by the "hate America first" Burns & Novick. If only the Jewish people in Europe had access to the internet, they would have been saved. Burns views everything through the lense of white supremacy; I hope Abbott and/or DeSantis ship a few hundred "asylum seekers" to the Burns compound because I know he has the room to house all of them.
Think of the film Ken could make after living among the oppressed like that!
Did left wing Ken Burns’ three part series even mention that the left wing NY Times lied about and covered up the holocaust for many years during WWII?
Or did Burns just blame white supremacists in the US for also causing the holocaust?
No matter the subject of Burn's documentaries, white supremacists (but never Democrats) seem to always be the bad guys.
Hey, let's not confuse the good white supremacists with the bad ones.
It covered newspapers of the day, mentioned the NY Times a bit, and the Dearborn Independent.
There are to types of closed borders.
One is to keep undesirable people out,
The other is to keep citizens captive.
Our borders are never closed to those that want to leave. That is a huge difference to Germany and the Holocaust.
This is absurd. The Nazis were to blame for the Final Solution, not the US immigration policy. That policy didn’t help Catholic Poles, Italians or Asians.
How many Catholic Poles also died at the hands of the SS? Over 3 million.
No documentaries for them I guess.
yet an arch-liberal would not agree with you
In 2004, George McGovern spoke on camera for the first time and said : “There is no question we should have attempted … to go after Auschwitz. There was a pretty good chance we could have blasted those rail lines off the face of the earth, which would have interrupted the flow of people to those death chambers, and we had a pretty good chance of knocking out those gas ovens.”
McGovern dismissed the Roosevelt administration’s claims about the diversion of planes. The argument was just “a rationalization,” he said, noting that no diversions would have been needed when he and other U.S pilots already were flying over that area.
I have no doubt the purpose of the article is to attempt to manufacture some analogy between Germany & the Holocaust to the immigration problems of the United States.
Its a false analogy. The U.S. has a pretty liberal immigration policy for accommodating LEGAL immigrants. The United States has more immigrants than any other country in the world. Today, more than 40 million people living in the U.S. were born in another country, accounting for about one-fifth of the world’s migrants. The population of immigrants is also very diverse, with just about every country in the world represented among U.S. immigrants.
The U.S. immigration problem is not an "intolerant" "xenophobic" system for legal immigration. The problem is 100% the failure to stem illegal immigration. That failure is a moral affront to the millions of legal immigrants, who believed in the moral investment of following the law, an investment they sought to pass on to their children. Tolerance of illegal immigration and amnesty for it is a statement to the millions of legal immigrants that they have simply been stupid fools - all they had to do was just join the masses of illegal immigrants and sooner or later they'd be given all that legal immigrants thought they had rightly earned.
No Ken Burns, the U.S. immigration issues are not analogous to Germany in the period of the Holocaust.
This seems to be a form of the Hillary "Argument from Perfection" !!
Open Borders have contributed also and what proves opposites proves nothing.
Saint Thomas: “Thirdly, when any foreigners wished to be admitted entirely to their fellowship and mode of worship. With regard to these a certain order was observed. For they were not at once admitted to citizenship: just as it was law with some nations that no one was deemed a citizen except after two or three generations, as the Philosopher says (Polit. iii, 1).”
Commentary: Saint Thomas recognizes that there will be those who will want to stay and become citizens of the lands they visit. However, he sets as the first condition for acceptance a desire to integrate fully into what would today be considered the culture and life of the nation.
A second condition is that the granting of citizenship would not be immediate. The integration process takes time. People need to adapt themselves to the nation. He quotes the philosopher Aristotle as saying this process was once deemed to take two or three generations. Saint Thomas himself does not give a time frame for this integration, but he does admit that it can take a long time.
Saint Thomas: “The reason for this was that if foreigners were allowed to meddle with the affairs of a nation as soon as they settled down in its midst, many dangers might occur, since the foreigners not yet having the common good firmly at heart might attempt something hurtful to the people.”
