Don't Let Fascists Steal Free Speech [Podcast]
Reason editors talk white supremacy in Virginia, free speech, the controversial Google memo, and more.
"To say 'no free speech for fascists,' which was on many a protest sign this weekend, is [the equivalent of saying] 'no free speech for Muslims,'" says Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward. That killing someone with a car means "everybody loses their speech rights" is "the exact same argument as saying if you are a big group of people and one of you is a suicide bomber, you all lose your speech rights."
On today's podcast, Reason's Nick Gillespie, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Peter Suderman, and Andrew Heaton discuss the recent violence in Charlottesville, Trump's initial response (Note: the podcast was recorded before Trump's press conference today), and the anti-free speech backlash that followed.
Last week, Google's James Damore was fired for an internal memo questioning the company's diversity policies. Justified or not?
Finally, how worried should we be about nuclear war with North Korea?

I did not hear anything whatsoever.
"if you are a big group of people and one of you is a suicide bomber, you all lose your speech rights."
Apparently, since "we're all in it together", this is exactly what's happening.
Another take.
If we don't suppress their rights then the terrorists have won.
The left invented the dog whistle word "alt-right" so that the left could no longer tell the difference between the "alt-right" and the right or libertarians.
This is a problem because most of the media is left. So the media can no longer tell the difference between white supremacists and libertarians.
On top of that much of the media has shut down their comment pages so that no counter narratives can be propagated by readers-- too many dark horse candidates.
the media can no longer tell the difference between white supremacists and libertarians.
Sure they can! Suprematists have that shoulder thing that goes up!
Richard Spencer invented the term "alt-right." Ask him, he'll say so.
If you're worried that your PR machine doesn't distance you enough from Nazis, isn't that kind of a whole bigger problem?
Tony, you do understand that you're a fascist, same as the neo nazi's right? The only difference between you and them is which race you want to oppress. You're the same bundle of sticks they are.
Go back to stormfront, you douche.
Being against white nationalists and racist alt-right dick-bags does not mean you hate white people.
If you're worried about not being distanced enough from Nazis, it's probably not a great idea to adopt their language and terminology.
The left invented the dog whistle word "alt-right"
You sure about that? The first I heard the term was from that Milo character, and I've mostly heard it from the younger Ollie North wannabes who like to call any conservative over 40 a "cuck".

"To say 'no free speech for fascists,' which was on many a protest sign this weekend, is [the equivalent of saying] 'no free speech for Muslims,'"
The important distinction always comes down to "prohibition" vs. "disapproval" -- Neither fascist nor leftist nor islamist free speech should be legally prohibited, be we all should be free to tell the fascists or leftists or islamists or people with "no free speech for fascists" signs to shut up, as they should be free to tell us the same.
Though not to punch each other, or run each other over, or behead each other.
None of that seems that hard to grasp, and yet...
Everyone got what they wanted yesterday. The nazi;s got the attention they craved, and the Mayor and antifa weasels got the riot they were agitating for. Everybody wins. Except that chick that got mowed down. Not so much for her.
is [the equivalent of saying] 'no free speech for Muslims,'"
do it right, Katherine Mangu-Ward. tell them it means no free speech for SJW Feelz.
Man, I was thinking about how the Google Memo was being mischaracterized here, then Nick made that exact point. Glad to see that that was there.
Don't let fascists take over free speech.
Unless Gillespie likes the fascists.
Then go ahead, pals.
Gillespie is a fascist
Yeah, people who hate fascists shouldn't be allowed to spew their anti-fascist hate because that will like, make fascists feel like they can't speak their minds. Because people will be mean to them if they do. We need a safe space for fascists.
