Between the "Hamilton Elector" movement, which is trying to get Electoral College members to vote for anyone but Donald Trump, celebrity-plagued videos attacking the next president, and profane tweets from ostensibly reputable journalists (see right), Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is kicking into high gear.

Sure, Donald Trump is the most unlikely president in American history and he has said truly vile things about whole groups of people while outlining policy preferences that are unsettling at best. And yet, calls to subvert the Electoral College—whether made by Harvard Law profs or TV presidents such as Martin Sheen—seem pretty nuts, too.

In the latest Reason Podcast, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Matt Welch, and I talk about and debate whether it's simply a continuation of the partisan hysteria that followed in the wake of Bill Clinton's, George W. Bush's, and Barack Obama's elections or if it is some kind of super-bug. We also talk about Rand Paul's increasingly public (and increasingly popular) call for a non-interventionist foreign policy and whether the United States deserves some responsibility for the horrific situation in Syria. Also discussed: Donald Trump's tech summit in which Trump delegates such as Peter Thiel rubbed shoulders with Trump targets such as Jeff Bezos, and what if any bright spots are on the horizon for 2017.

What I hate most about "Trump Derangement Syndrome" is they such crazy shit about him, it puts me in the position of defending Trump! A position I would rather not be in. But when you say he's worse than Hitler, what other response is there but, "no, he's not". (Which, of course, makes me a racist Nazi.)

What's leaving TDS unchecked and spiraling into ever greater heights of breathless hysteria is that most rational people don't want to have to say things like "He's not really a straight-up Nazi, he's more just your garden-variety sorta-racist-in-an-unaware-way rich white guy" or "he didn't actually call all Mexicans rapists, he just implied that they, collectively, are looking to undermine our country by sending their worst people here illegally," or "religions aren't races, so being suspicious of everyone associated with a certain religion is not technically racism" etc., because none of these things are positions that are going to get you any traction with a Progressive, anyway, and will just get you condemned with the same, broad, "close-enough" brush.

But what this means is that Progressives just say whatever they want, no matter how hyperbolic (and they've actually whipped themselves into a state of utter panic and despair with their own posturing), and it's tricky to find a defensible position from which to argue that they need to tone it down a notch. Or ten.

Look at Romney, about as moderate and mild-mannered a Republican there is. But he was going to put women in binders (they deliberately took his quote about resumes out of context) and literally enslave black people, putting them back in chains (I have no idea where they pulled that from, but they claimed it).
