These Parents Were Scared to Let Their Kids Walk Alone in New York City. They Did It Anyway.
Growing up on a small farm in rural New Mexico, Rusty Heath remembers his mother telling him on summer mornings "go do whatever you're going to do, don't hurt yourself, and we'll see you later." He and his twin brother would spend their days horse back riding, camping, and fishing…without adult supervision. Rusty's wife, Leah, also a New Mexico-native, had a similarly free-range childhood. "We would go and ride our bikes and chase lizards," she says, "and we were out there till we felt like coming back, and I don't remember anyone coming looking for us."
After a recent move to New York City, the Heaths found themselves reluctant to extend similar freedoms to their own kids, Cassidy, 10, and Riley, 12. "[They're] on a much tighter leash than I was," says Rusty. "I feel like my family is my responsibility and it's difficult to put your kids' safety at risk."
Enter Lenore Skenazy, who's a regular Reason.com contributor, a former New York Daily News and New York Sun columnist, and the host of a new show on the Discovery Life Channel called America's Worst Mom. Skenazy, who launched the free-range kids movement in 2008 after getting wide attention for a column explaining why she let her nine-year-old son take the subway by himself, recently started making house calls to nervous parents.
Skenazy came by the Heath home one evening. Click the video above to find out what happened next.

It's actually an interactive video: viewers get to determine what happens to the kids.
So if I choose to fight the dragon and lose I can just rewind and pick another option?
Yes. Yes you can.
Writing? In words? That's so web 1.0.
They kind of do in the title. It's really a major spoiler.
I don't need to watch it. I know they get murdered to death. THIS IS WHY CPS NEEDS A BIGGER BUDGET!

Taboola! Taboola! TABOOLA!

He asked a twelve year old if he knew how to cross the street. A 12 fucking year old.
(for those who didn't watch, the indomitable Lenore took on a couple of yupster outer borough NYC parents whose oldest is 12. She "tested" the parents by asking them to let their kids go to the grocery a couple blocks away. The dad asked the 12 year old boy if he knew how to cross the street. Seriously.)
In all fairness. They left New Mexico for NYC and, apparently, didn't suffer any appreciable ill-effects related to self- or child cultural suffocation for a full decade.
I can only imagine that the SS would knock on these people's door asking if they knew any Jews and they would pull out a map and invite them inside for tea.
And did you listen to the kid's answer? He's too young to know how to roll his eyes effectively, but he certainly did it with his voice.
For a good "free range kids" story, read No Life for a Lady, about growing up in New Mexico in the 1870s and 1880s.
These parents were doing a disservice to their heritage.
I'm sure some busybody has already notified CPS and these two will have a visit from a social worker soon.
The moment some kid whose family Lenore helped gets hurt or killed, the knives are going to come out. Just watch.
Our Mother would toss my us out the door, lock it, and tell us "don't come back until diner time!".
My Brothers and I would be in jail today for what we played at: BB guns, fort building, snow shoveling, leaf raking, dirt clod fights, etc. And, if we got a scrape NEVER tell your Mom!
Your parents FED you? Some people had it made.
There's not much the GOP can do to prevent the FCC's proposed Title II reclassification of the Net.
Bullshit. Power of the purse. Cut off all funding to the FCC.
shit. wrong article.
But right attitude.
And the insane position of college administrators labeling male students as rapists.....
uh oh....
That wasn't as dramatic as I was expecting it to be. Instead of 'to the store and back' they should have bicycles and told 'come home when the street lights come on' like I was.
Have they found the bodies yet?
I know, I was like 'ermagerd, they just walked by a big, black guy!! Are they gonna make it?'
Theory:
Perhaps the increasing paranoia about kids' safety is a function of smaller family sizes.
Years ago, people had more kids, so if one of them died, you still had lots of backups. A couple of them would turn out ok, and take care of you when you got old.
These days, if you only have 1 or 2 kids, losing one of them is a bigger loss, hence parents will be more careful about keeping them alive.
It's not about being more careful, it's about fetishizing them.
OF course, from the useless government employee perspective, when people had 6-8 kids even the stupid government didn't have 24/7 surveillance on everybody so they didn't expect parents to. Now the government has 24/7 surveillance and expects all parents to do the same to their kids because otherwise the useless government employee might have to get off his/her lazy ass and work once in a while which is a rotten shame and should be punished.

Do you realize how pathetic it is to use a comment section to push your business?
Or do you, even, come back and look at what you have wrought by taking advantage of a weak vetting system.
My mom let me play out in a lightning storm, cross a frozen lake (even though I didn't know how to swim), stay behind in the car while she went in and shopped, we didn't wear seatbelts (many cars didn't HAVE seatbelts), drank sugared kool-aid, and so much more. Then I had kids (a little late in life, albeit) and I remember just taking them home I was under the Watchful Eye Of The State, just in leaving the hospital. Both times I had the clear feeling that if gave them cause, they'd be on the bat-line to the Authorities. How could all of this have happened in just a few decades?
In 1974 my cousin and I were allowed, even engouraged, to drive by ourselves from Deep East Texas to the Grand Canyon and camp alone for a week at 17 before our senior year in High School.
Today, not only CPS, but the general attitude of other people, would be all over our parents.
Sounds like she was pleading for God or another authority to take you away.
I think we've gone from "it's just a goddamned kid" to "it's a precious snowflake." Which is pretty easy to understand when you realize the "precious snowflake" meme came from the narcissistic baby boomers.

I dunno, seems pretty reasonable to me. I live in New Mexico, and I don't want to walk around in NYC by myself either.
New York is like Corporation Disney now. I lived there in the '70s ('80s and '90s). Oddly, I'm still alive.
Unless you go to one of the truly shitty neighborhoods most of NYC is socialist Mayberry.
The couple of decades I lived in Manhattan the subways would be full of kids after school . Lots commuted to schools which were not in their immediate neighborhoods . Many seemed at least as young as these .
So did I and I remember the same thing. I worked near the UN school and there were always a mess of kids on the bus and subway.
OTOH, that was over 20 years ago. I was babysitting at twelve, so this all seems utterly ridiculous to me.
I want to start making the term TransJenner part of the the vernacular.
Google is paying 98$ per hour! Just work For Few hours & Spend more time with friends and family. On Sunday i Bought Themselvers a Alfa Romeo from having made $18543 this month.

This article makes me recall when I saw "Uptown Girls" (sucked for the most part, but it was a date movie with the wife, so...) - there's a scene where Dakota's character runs away from her Manhattan home and somehow makes it to Coney Island. By herself. At night. I remember thinking, no fucking way she could've done that.
She had sort of a children of the corn look to her when she was a kid, so the abductors probably left her alone
my classmate's mom makes $82 /hr on the laptop . She has been laid off for 7 months but last month her paycheck was $16174 just working on the laptop for a few hours. you can check here...............
