Why We Identify with Mutants: X-Men Screenwriter Simon Kinberg
"There's always suspicion of large organizations in immense amounts of power," says X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg. "Whether it's a corporation or a government, or an evil society of mutants. Especially when they are all working together."
In addition to a slew of Hollywood blockbusters, Kinberg has written and produced the latest X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as the upcoming X-Men: Apocolypse, The Fantastic Four, and Star Wars Rebels. Reason TV's Tracy Oppenheimer caught up with Kinberg at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the mass appeal of the X-Men films and why they are so relatable to a mainstream audience.
Kinberg explains how the character and plot developments in the X-Men series parallel some real-world themes like xenophobia, individuality, and government programs gone awry. "You have sort of the whole pantheon of human experience," says Kinberg.

I don't identify with mutants. Mutants identify with me.
Thanks for giving us X-Men: The Last Stand.
Ouch.

Repressed underdogs with super powers...
Are we sure the X-men's popularity has nothing to do with latent white supremacist sentiment coming out of the civil rights era?
Note: The mastermind supervillain is a Jew.
Yes, I imagine white supremacists probably saw a little of their own struggles in, say, Storm.
Here is the cover of X-men #1

All the heroes are of European decent and one character is literally snow white.
Storm did not exist until the middle of 1975
If you have a problem with it wait for the N-men movie to come out.
They were a Doom Patrol rip off anyways
From Wikipedia:
When the popularity of the book waned and the publisher canceled it, Drake ended the series in a dramatic manner: he killed off the entire Doom Patrol. In Doom Patrol #121 (September?October 1968), the Doom Patrol sacrificed their lives to save the small fishing village of Codsville, Maine. . This marked the first time in comic book history that a canceled book ended by having most of its cast of main characters die.
That is frigin awesome.

Why We Identify with Mutants
What's this "we" stuff, Kemosabe?
Pfft, X-men. Brotherhood for life! Make way for the Homo Superior!
All of the super hero/mutant movies are fucking retarded.
Why are we getting spammed all of the sudden?
We had a troll singularity earlier.
I suspect it was just Tulpa and his socks.
There was some performance art in there too.
My socks know what you did in the dark.
This. I don't get the fascination. At. All.
Oh shut up that is not true. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were awesome and so are most of the Avengers-related movies.
PS You need to leave Brazil. Now. They are about to go Full Socialist by electing Silva. I recommend fleeing to America or Canada and then waiting for Argentina to come to its senses or just staying in NA.
There is a dude that knows what time it is.

Other than a few archaic bacteria, we're all mutants.
I don't identify with the mutants. They are a bunch of bigots that try to exclude vampires from everything..... Except for one. Wolverine invites us to all the family parties and BBQ's, cause he can't stand the other mutants.
We even go around at night doing the James Brown on the mutant's lawns. Watch me glide across your Scott's lawn biotch!!

Again with the misleading colon titles! 1st it's "Veronique de Rugy: Young, Bummed, and in Debt", now it's "Why We Identify with Mutants: X-Men Screenwriter Simon Kinberg". Whether the colon is before or after the blogger's name or description, it implies something about the person rather than the subject.
You are not supposed to worry about colons so much until you are about 50.
Bo, I gotta give you +2 for that 🙂
I'm 60, & due for another colonoscopy. But more concerned about heart disease.
Meanwhile I sympathize, maybe even identify, with the aliens in They Live. It's like the Masquerade of the Howards.
Will Someone Please Think of the (Tiny, Tiny) Children?
"A woman in Montana has been charged with criminally endangering a child, which is a felony, after testing positive for illegal drugs. According to court records, she is in her first trimester of pregnancy. "
http://thinkprogress.org/healt.....rm-charge/
The woman in question is quite the character, there is no doubt about that, but this kind of thing raises some questions. First, if she has the choice to abort a 12 week old fetus how can she be responsible for 'criminally endangering' the fetus ('child')? Also, given that, what, 15-20% of confirmed pregnancies miscarry, most in women who do no equivalent 'endangering' is it right to hold her responsible for something that might effect something that might be born? Even if we were to accept that a fetus that young is a person with human rights, what's the line as to what the government can require of the expectant mother?
Her body. Her choice.
We are libertarians. We ARE mutants.
"We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're soldiers Reasonoids. But we're American soldiers Reasonoids of various nationalities, genders, and preferences, not that there's anything wrong with that! We've been kicking ass for 200 years a while! We're ten and one!
Well, 12 and three now.
Soon, forty six and 2.
But is that 6 minus the one that's passed to the 9 to equal 10?
Or maybe just 42.
Speaking of shitty superhero movies...
...i scanned through the IMDB 'top 250' (based on ratings from users - registered i think)
... and they gave "The Dark Knight" #4. Of all time.
I saw that movie earlier this summer and didn't even finish it because it was so bad. (*exception of Gary Oldman) I can't believe people have been harping about it for years. It was dreadful. The action was weak, bale sounded like he had throat cancer, and while heath ledger did great in the role, the needless plot was just an overly complex excuse for set-pieces. what ever happened to "Crazy guy tries to 'take over' Gotham"? It worked for decades??
By contrast, 'captain america' was actually pretty good.
I get that 'popularity contests' are not the same as 'critics choice'. I understand that Shawshank Redemption should probably be #1 for how universally entertaining it is (and the fantastic reveal at the end)
But that a crappy, poorly acted batman movie is #4, and... fuck, 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is ...#30-something? There is something wrong in the universe.
Don't even get me started on the fact that 'Time Bandits' and 'Animal House' aren't even on the list. CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
But...Heath Ledger.
Caddyshack, mostly for Rodney:
"Want to make $14 the hard way?"
... Hobbit
The great thing about captain America was that the first half was a pretty okay movie with elements of Watchmen, and the second was Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Captain America would've been better with less Nazi energy weapons (I mean, historical German superweapons would've been cool) and a more plausible way for him to end up in the future. There was no reason he couldn't jump out after steering the bomber away from populated areas.
And fucking hell, no Time Bandits? No wonder that midget killed himself!
'Jensen|9.6.14 @ 10:18PM|#
Captain America would've been better with less Nazi energy weapons"
as a one-off, I might agree.
But as a component of the overlapping 'avengers' narratives, and establishing the 'reinvented, magical historicism' of the Marvel Universe, it was a necessary component. There always has to be some "supernatural power with potential to crack open a bridge between dimensions" thing going on. its what makes it a proper 'comic book' story.
Captain America would have been better with competent directing ie better pacing, less shoe-horned messaging about picking the right person for power. God that movie sucked.
I'm sorry to hear you have such awful taste in movies Gilmore. May God have mercy on your tasteless soul.
You meant the second Captain America right?!?! The first one was just dreadful.
OT, but...

Decadence mostly. The false security of thinking people with super powers wouldn't ultimately use those super powers to exploit us. Chesterton has his character Gabriel Syme say "a man shouldn't leave anything in the world of which he is terrified." Characteristic overstatement but it has certain application to this case.
