Los Angeles Schools Superintendent Speaks at National School Choice Rally

"We believe that every single family and student has the right to a choice of a highly effective school in Los Angeles," said Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent John Deasy. Deasy spoke to supporters during a National School Choice Week rally at Los Angeles Union Station on January 30, 2014. 

United Teachers of Los Angeles, the union representing public school teachers in L.A., has been critical of Deasy because he has pushed for reforms based on student test scores and teacher evaluations. Deasy also faced criticism recently over his $1 billion plan to put iPads in the hands of all 650,000 students in Los Angeles after some students were able to hack the security systems of the iPads to search forbidden sites. 

Reason TV previously visited Newark, New Jersey and Houston, Texas to cover National School Choice Week events in 2014.

Keep your eye on the ball. Choices offered by public officials often are analogous to the choices offered by Central Services for Duct types.

This guy does seem promising though.

He would be more credible if he weren't a public funded central planner of poor education services.

The administrators are actually in many cases the best positioned to see that the current situation isn't working. The school administrators I've known tend to have a pretty hostile attitude toward CFT and are extremely frustrated with how absolutely their hands are tied in being unable to get rid of even the shittiest teachers.

Also, the ones who move into administration are often the more clever ones who see that in-the-classroom teaching is a dead-end job, while it's exactly the brain-dead automatons who stay in the classroom, propped up by the union.

I'm not at all surprised to see public school administrators standing up and saying "this system sucks."
