A holiday wish for a true Christmas miracle: a sound monetary policy
The value of Remy's soon-to-be Christmas classic can only be determined after adjusting for inflation.

LYRICS:
I don't want no eggnog, lactose ain't for me
I don't need new pants. Then again…TBD…
Don't want any gifts this Christmas it's true
all I want for Christmas is…
I don't want a Surface tablet, that one's pretty clear
I don't want that new book by Martin Bashir
There's only one this I want, yes it's true
all I want for Christmas is U…..
…nilateral printing of billions of dollars
a month to be stopped cuz it's causing my dollar to
rampantly inflate, I tell you it's killing us
all of this open-ended fiscal stimulus
Risk underpricing and rampant inflation
resulting in capital misallocation
all I want this holiday season
is an end to quantitative easing
Now Santa I know you get this a lot
those children's letters concernedly fraught
But I'll tell you what I want and save you some pains
I'll take the candy--you can keep the Keynes
Presents under the tree, the Fed starting to taper
Because only one of them should be covered in short-term paper
Don't want nothing else for Christmas it's true
all I want for Christmas is U….
…uniformity in the mandate of the Fed
or reform the whole thing or start over instead
because I ain't a pro but I really don't think that
it's "Buy CDO's with some dough from an Inkjet"
The year home run records were obliterated
that was the last time we saw Bonds so inflated
all I want this holiday season
all I want this holiday season
all I want this holiday season
is an end to quantitative easing.

Haha, the Chris Brown one was great.
I wasn't sure about this one until the Barry Bonds line and the letter about Chris Brown.
Best Christmas lyrics ever.
I'd rather hoped Remy would at least scoff some cognac
Not his best work, but still golden.
The "candy Keynes" bit was good.
While this had a few funny lines, I say the one from last year (or was it the year before that) with Grandma and the TSA was funnier (If only for the postmodern surrealism of the original song). My first impression here was Friday Funny level disgust. But there are a few good lines that rise to a chuckle, perhaps even a charitable holiday guffaw.
I can think of better things to want for Christmas. Like a blowjob for instance.
The Fed is blowing bubbles with QE...so there's your bj!
Maybe, if you're extra good, the Fed will give you a reach around.
If you like the blowjob you are receiving, you can keep it. Period.
Awesome.
All I want for Xmas is a Government Almighty job, and my Pension, and my Benefits, and my Sacred Badge of Moral Superiority that goes with it?
"Approx. 2:30"
But the video's 2:27 long.
I always wonder what "quantitative easing" is, I hear it all the time. Did it become too hard under Obama?
It's runtime has been inflated.
People aren't all bad
VANCOUVER - Yogi Omar was so strapped for cash that he nearly didn't stop to help a scruffy panhandler who asked him for change on a downtown street corner just after midnight Thursday.
But just as he was about to walk away, something compelled him to turn around and offer the man food and clothing.
"I wanted to give him food more than anything else, really," Omar, 30 said.
He stopped in his tracks, though, when the man refused his offer of help ? and instead asked Omar what he could do for him.
Turns out, the panhandler wasn't even homeless, but a wealthy benefactor participating in a random acts of kindness ritual with his family. For three hours every night for a week over Christmas, the man apparently hangs out on a street corner to see who is willing to help the down and out, while his family checks on him and brings warm drinks.
Omar ended up speaking with the man, telling him how he had just bought expensive plane tickets to Guangzhou, China, to visit his dying father.
The man offered to help but when Omar declined, he then asked him how much he paid for rent.
"I said $469," Omar said. "I was joking but that's what I pay. He just whipped out this fanny pack and gave me $469 in cash. I was like, 'Is this serious?' I was really stunned at that point."
I hope Jason Garrett has Microsoft Word on his computer, because he's going to need to be polishing up that resume in a few more hours.
Maybe you posted a few minutes too soon.
Catch 1&2 by Martin Bashir had me laughing out loud.
Resistance is futile. Assimilation is assured.
A second Montana State University fraternity has been sanctioned after allegations that a woman was sexually assaulted during a party in the house in September.
MSU announced Friday that the permanent sanctions against Sigma Chi include eliminating hard alcohol in the house and requiring members to be educated about sexual assault.
----------
As part of the Sigma Chi sanctions, the fraternity will also host a town hall meeting in January 2015 to assess progress made in the first year of the sanctions. The meeting will include members of all MSU fraternities and sororities as well as members of other prominent student organizations like athletes and Associated Students of Montana State University.
Caires said he hopes the sanctions will create a safer environment for students and cut down on dangerous levels of drinking associated with hard liquor.
Caires also praised members of the fraternities, who suspended students involved in the alleged assaults and cooperated fully with the university throughout the investigation.
"These are young men who said, 'We messed up and we want to fix things,'" Caires said.
CONFESS!
MSU police investigated the alleged assault and referred both cases to the Gallatin County Attorney's Office with requests for prosecution. So far, no charges have been filed.
The seriousness of the charges should be all the evidence needed for a conviction.
Bear in mind, these days if a woman is drunk while having sex, it's sexual assault, because they can't give consent while drunk.
Even if the guy is drunk too.
Of course in the case of mutual drunkeness, the woman is also guilty of assault, right?
No Silly! The patriarchy forced her into getting drunk! As all good feminists know, most women are just helpless children who need to be cared for by their more enlightened sisters.
But beer is OK . Just don't drink when hard liquor is involved, students.
Not bad advice for students really.
I was laughing at him when I first read it, but he did better than most "officials".
"A second Montana State University fraternity has been sanctioned after allegations that a woman was sexually assaulted during a party in the house in September."
If this is the same chic she must be a real slut.
Counting 1.....2.....3....
Comments are, unsurprisingly, of the "Guilty until proven innocent" variety.
So Sigma Chi Beta Rho can't have lighters, but they can still have matches? Makes perfect sense if you don't think about it. Way to take rape seriously MSU!
This comment is like deja vu all over again...
Holy shit, the Cowboys actually pulled it out somehow. Incredible.

Geez, that Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Shitty Sequel had me thinking for a moment that I stumbled upon Anal Venneman's new pen name.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh, Cardinals, you are in for some hurt.
KLOOOOONG!
Whoooooooops!
What was that again?
3 & out?
The Cards aren't a great team, probably not even a good team but Seattle is self-destructing.
Four INT and only three points? And bad penalties? The Seahawks are going to have to get that under control if they want to be successful in the playoffs.
You seem to be under the delusion that I want the Seahawks to win at this point. I hate chokers. They don't deserve to win this game, especially against such a pathetically awful team like the Cardinals. The defense has eaten the Cardinals alive (four interceptions, OOPS), but the offence has been so terrible that they should all be pulled and put the fucking B team in. Fuck, I hate chokers.
Fuck, Hauschka biffing a 24 yard field goal after his season? My god. Just lose and eat the crow you fucks. You're in the playoffs regardless.
And now Cards' fans will be counting on Palmer to stage a come-from-behind drive.
That's gotta suck.
But he did it.
So the Seahawks are beatable at home.
If they don't win next week, they might not even host a playoff game this year.
First loss at home since Green Bay beat them in September 2012.
Nope. First loss since SF beat them in Dec 201...oh, i see what you did there.
Mark Steyn goes after his own editor over free speech and intimidation.
I don't always agree with Steyn, but man he has balls.
hat a society where lives are ruined over an aside because some identity-group don decides it must be so is ugly and profoundly illiberal.
This. There are more methods of oppression than just government and all of them are but precursors to government oppression.
It's kind of ironic that liberals have fought non government oppression for more than a century and now their proggy brethren are intent on imposing their own version.
Just more evidence that it's a religion.
"This. There are more methods of oppression than just government and all of them are but precursors to government oppression."
Not all, John.
Getting canned for running your mouth need not be a precursor to anything other than a bit more caution next time you open your yap.
Exactly. If you spout off a bunch of ignorant racist bullshit, and other decide they don't want to associate with you, how exactly is that the precursor to government thought control?
I really don't understand the position of those who want freedom of speech to include a freedom from consequences.
"I really don't understand the position of those who want freedom of speech to include a freedom from consequences."
And the consequences had nothing to do with coercion.
The guy is not in jail, or fined or anything of the sort. He's free to find employment wherever he can.
I don't know, but presume he had a pretty highly paid gig going there and there's a degree of good fortune involved. Anyone in that position who wishes to stay there ought to pay attention to what might change that.
Not guy, chick.
The bigger thing is that it's relatively easy to start a lynch mob on the internet. This was progs going after a more or less prog, but both sides can get in on it.
When it's a matter of going after Alec Baldwin, or the the guy from Duck Dynasty, well, at least they are celebrities and public personas.
This woman? She's nobody. She had 170 twitter followers when buzzfeed called down the mob. For a tasteless joke.
It's not even a matter of her being fired for it a stupid joke -- it's a matter of an internet lynch mob making that happen over a course of a few hours when she is on a plane, unable to respond, etc.
Apparently I skimmed this thread, and didn't read closely enough. I read one Mark Steyn article on these last night or today, and apparently thought it was the same.
Derp.
"It's not even a matter of her being fired for it a stupid joke -- it's a matter of an internet lynch mob making that happen over a course of a few hours when she is on a plane, unable to respond, etc."
Pretty sure the comment concerned the Duck guy.
Regardless, there's no guarantee of due process for stupid statements. And while I understand you're using hyperbole to make a point, I think it's important to make clear there is no lynch-mob; just people who found her comment offensive.
If her employer finds that sufficient to ruin her contribution, well, she shouldn't let the door hit her in the ass.
I derped hard on that one.
For the woman fired for the joke that I was mentioning though? I'd say it was a lynch mob. I only caught up on it on Saturday morning.
Less than 200 people could find her comment offensive, buzzfeed sicker 100k+ on her.
"For the woman fired for the joke that I was mentioning though? I'd say it was a lynch mob. I only caught up on it on Saturday morning.
Less than 200 people could find her comment offensive, buzzfeed sicker 100k+ on her."
Nope. The "mob" of 200 people didn't fire her. Her employer decided that response was sufficient.
Maybe the employer is wrong. Tough.
Misunderstanding. She had less than two hundred followers -- no one cared.
I'm not even concerned about her getting fired, it's the internet two-minute hate that concerns me.
Please change your handle back to the enviable "SweatingGin" -- how could you trade that cool name for this?
Yeah, Count, not only was SweatingGin much cooler, it's getting hard to keep track of who's who around here.
I think the frustration from the right stems from two things:
1. Robertson was not targeting gays in some hate-filled rant. He was really just affirming what his Christian faith taught him about what is sinful, homosexual behavior being just among a list of sins like general licentiousness, greed, etc.
So GLAAD and their "allies" have really taken what he said out of context. You can believe homosexuality is an affront to God and not be bigoted if you still manage to treat gays like people.
2. Many people in this country agree with Robertson and feel that a very vocal and politically connected minority have managed to silence a voice on their side by pressuring A&E.
It seems that him calling sodomy a sin was more controversial than his remarks about black people.
Anyway, unless he has a contract with the network forbidding it, he can be fired. I presume it's based on what they think the public wants and what they're comfortable with. If they sincerely believe that traditional Christianity is a threat to everything decent, they should have the right to fire Christians (though the EEOC wouldn't agree with me). He seems to have a fan base, so I would
speculate that he can find another gig.
Incidentally, today I saw a black person with a Duck Dynasty T-shirt. I think she was from Mexico.
"they should have the right to fire Christians "
they do have the right to fire Christians. Legally they aren't supposed to do it simply because they are Christian.
If we substitute Muslim for Christian in this story though we may find he has even more "rights" than is the case now.
Like Orwell said, some humans are more equal than others.
"2. Many people in this country agree with Robertson and feel that a very vocal and politically connected minority have managed to silence a voice on their side by pressuring A&E."
Regardless of his religion and whether he is able to separate the sin from the sinner, his employer responded to what the employer found to be just cause to fire his ass.
And to be clear, if an atheist got canned for some statement regarding a lack of bleef, I'd be on the same side; the employer of someone in the public eye has a low threshold for unpopular views.
Getting canned for running your mouth need not be a precursor to anything other than a bit more caution next time you open your yap.
And I'm sure that you'd feel the same way if a block of christians blackballed someone for publicly supporting teh gays - right?
Most people here will vehemently defend an organization's right to free association. Whether they want to sever a relationship with an employee because of internal conflict or outside influence.
Are you arguing that AnE should be forced to employ someone they disagree with?
"Are you arguing that AnE should be forced to employ someone they disagree with?"
Exactly.
There is no "lynch mob"; do you want to start one?
Are you arguing that AnE should be forced to employ someone they disagree with?
No of course not.
I'm commenting on the current zeitgeist that defends his firing but was aghast at the idea of McCarthyism and blacklists in the 1950s.
Most of the leftards that want Robertson banished from the public square would find the idea of a group of christians doing the same to be the worst thing evah.
"I'm commenting on the current zeitgeist that defends his firing but was aghast at the idea of McCarthyism and blacklists in the 1950s."
I'm defending his firing simply as a condition of the free contractual arrangement between employer and employee.
And under names I won't mention, I more than supported the 'black lists' in print pubs over the year; if someone is arguing that my business be taken from me, I'd fire that person's ass in a minute and let other employers know what I did and why.
"I'm defending his firing simply as a condition of the free contractual arrangement between employer and employee."
This is the core of the issue here. As long as its (semi) free people making decisions without any government input, A&E's interest in maintaining its image and marketability trumps all.
it's
"And I'm sure that you'd feel the same way if a block of christians blackballed someone for publicly supporting teh gays - right?"
If that someone got canned, yes I would. Those who employ people in the public eye have every reason to be cautious.
"hat a society where lives are ruined over an aside because some identity-group don decides it must be so is ugly and profoundly illiberal."
The meme is obvious and needs to be brought back in line.
I wanted to back slap Paula Dean when she went on TV and said " I beg for your forgiveness" from a bunch of non forgiving, agenda driven people. I wasn't a fan but it doesn't matter.
I just hate to see these 'special rights" groups prosper.

You know who else wanted people to commute to Poland?
Bronis?aw Komorowski?
I'm beginning to suspect that a lot of outrage at 'intolerance' towards gays is just a bunch of self-righteous straight people who want to look tolerant
I realize the lisping, high-pitched gay man is a stereotype, but such people really do exist. Odd that their depiction on TV in a comedic light is considered offensive but a stereotyped redneck or Jew or Hispanic is okay.
I was arguing with a guy at CNN this AM. He couldn't grasp the concept that if it was okay for an employer to fire his employee for pontificating about his religious beliefs he must also side with an employer for firing an employee who pontificates gay rights, if the employer so desired.
No principles whatsoever. Only political positions.

Eduard,
Merry Christmas to you.
No, I don't bleeve, but the holiday around the solstice is to be enjoyed however you can.
And Happy Holidays to those who find Christmas obnoxious.
God bless us, everyone.
Well...
God bless us, everyone.
Same here.
God bless you to all who have sneezed.
Thank you, and merry Christmas to you! I wish I'd matched your Christmas spirit with a link to an uplifting religion-themed story, but the link is actually about a WaPo article where the author blames Men and Society for the fact that women do such a disproportionate amount of preparing for Christmas.
I let you down (probably not for the last time.) So to make up for it, here's Stevie Nicks singing "Silent Night."

Well, at least you can do a Youtube search and find it.
The shortest day in the Northern hemisphere was yesterday by some minimal amount.
As those who watch have noticed, the sunset is now ~5 minutes later than it was on 12/8; time for some cheer.
The sunrise is as yet getting later; it will 'level' on 1/8/14 (yep, one month after the sunset plateau).
So the 'noon' on a sundial is now biased strongly 'early'; I presume this has to do with the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, but I've yet to get a good mental 'visualization' of the asymmetry.
Yesterday was the second happiest day of the year. Days are getting longer. The first happiest day of the year is when we reset the clocks to DST. Sunset here was 4:30 PM and sunrise is 8:07. I HATE THE DARK!

Francisco,
What is also commonly ignored is the delta between the eastern-most part of the time zone and the west.
I can't get farther west without getting wet, so the sunrise and sunset here is nearly a (clock) hour later than, say, Salt Lake.
Yeah, I'm on the western side of the time zone. On the summer solstice you can fish till 10 pm.

I'm from Winnipeg originally and it had me as most similar to Spokane with also a strong resemblance to Erie, Pennsylvania as well.
It nailed me in NEPA.
Yeah me too. Orange County, although it also through out San Jose for some reason.
I certainly don't say "hella".
I think I confused it. I grew up in a kind of a transitory area that gets influenced by several different regions, and it couldn't quite handle that.
It did a decent job of identifying the influential regions, though. It just couldn't use that to triangulate and actually nail down the exact region.
Sooo..
I'm either from San Jose or PA.
I never knew there was such a similarity. Though, I've lived all over so my speech is littered with various and inconsistent Americanisms.
I think they got PA from "hoagie" as it's not said anywhere else.

WTF
Well, there goes Chile...
Given that she was president for four years already, I question how much of a difference this will actually make.
They had her around for four years already and still ended up with the lowest taxes in the OECD. That tells me that Chilean socialists at least aren't stupid enough to kill the golden goose.
Yet.
From wikipedia:
Seems like kind of a mixed bag, honestly. I think I'd take her over just about anyone the Democrats are currently thinking of running.
She is running on a WAY more radical platform now than she was then. There are commies in her alliance and the whole of Chilean society has gone insane for 'free' education.
She doesn't have the majority she wants to really fuck with the constitution so the opposition can do a lot of damage control. Even so, we've lost our 'paragon' in latin America. Peru and Mexico are improving and Argentina will probably pull its head out eventually. We could get real lucky and wind up with a Libertarian in charge of Costa Rica which would totes make up for losing Chile.
Remy is a national treasure. One of you said it on a different thread. You were right.
