Psychologists at Manchester University have been investigating the effects of TV. Among their conclusions, as summarized by the BBC: "watching television exercised both sides of the brain, making information easier to understand….[N]ot only did the brain take information that has both sound and vision quicker, but it retained it for longer." In the words of one researcher, Geoff Beattie, "The brain simply likes telly."
