Shooter Kills 12 in California Bar

The bar was packed with people for college night.

YouTube Screenshot via CBS This MorningYouTube Screenshot via CBS This MorningAuthorities say 13 people are dead, including the alleged shooter, after a gunman opened fire last night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

Among the dead is Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year deputy of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Helus is believed to have been among the first law enforcement officers to arrive on the scene following reports of a shooting.

The other victims remain unidentified. Between 10 and 15 people sustained minor injuries, according to authorities.

According to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean, the suspected shooter has been identified as 28-year old Ian David Long.

Long is reportedly a Marine Corps veteran.

Witnesses tell CBS Los Angeles the gunman first opened fire at a bouncer and a cashier before shooting in the vicinity of the dance floor.

"I started hearing these big pops. Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground," one witness tells KABC. "I look up—the security guard is dead. Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot."

It's not clear what the shooter's motives were. Dean told reporters that the gunman appears to have shot himself, according to CBS News.

The shooting occurred at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a western-style bar located about 30 minutes away from Pepperdine University. The bar was full of people for a college country music event, and Pepperdine University confirmed that some of its students were there last night.

Dean, meanwhile, said investigators have only found one weapon at the scene. "Right now as far as we know there was only one handgun, but that could certainly change as we do a more thorough search of the building," he said. Dean later said Long carried out the massacre with a Glock 21 handgun equipped with an extended magazine.

    I know better then to expect an intellectually honest answer from you, or even a semi-intelligent one, however, I just have to ask: how is mentioning gun nuts even close to being pertinent? This was in California, the state with the strictest gun control laws in the nation. A state that polling shows the population generally isn't in favor of private gun ownership (yes there are red, rural counties that are the exception) and this was done with a handgun. Are you ever able to offer anything that isn't callow and nonsequitor?

  • Sarah Palin's Buttplug||

    One of the best defenses is to ridicule your opponents protests, especially if their charges are true. This way you don't have to justify your actions, while falsely discrediting your opponents. You are examoke A if this strategy.
    Considering that democratic lawmakers are already using this to call for more (unspecified) gun control, despite California having the strictest gun control laws in the Nation, and despite the magazine the shooter used being already illegal in California, the charge that their eventual goal is to eliminate private gun ownership is not without it's merits. Especially when they talk about places like England as examples of what we should do.

  • Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland||

    how is mentioning gun nuts even close to being pertinent

    Gun nuts invariably and promptly respond to shootings, wherever the shooting occurs, with (1) lame 'thoughts and prayers' rhetoric, (2) assertions that 'now is not the time' to debate gun absolutism, and (3) more lame 'thoughts and prayers' rhetoric.

  • Paloma||

AND at the same time the heavy weight bearing bones in that lizard going hollow and super strong in the bird..... not to mention the changes in reproduction, diet therefore digestive system........... if any one in the entire set of differences between them falters then that genetic line is terminated...... and you want folks to ONLY be exposed to your evolution system and nothing else? And the perp was DRT. I trust his sons were duly impressed, and got a great life lesson on which end of the handgun they need to be on. Also, practice practice practice. Seems Dad was a fair to middling shot, dusting the perp with one round before perp even got off one back at him......
    Perp as now learned HIS lesson, to. He'll never do that again.......

  • Paloma||

    The shooter WAS the military.

  • Tionico||

    all we know is that he WAS in the military. Woudda shot more, but a neighbour went and got HIS rifle and hit the perp with one round....... making him end his killing spree. Coppers got him pretty quick after that.

  • Sigivald||

    And the writing is kinda sloppy - "extended" means "bigger than than stock".

    Most likely - we don't know yet - the "illegal" magazine was simply "bigger than the CA 10 round limit", not "extended".

  • Tionico||

    Yup. Some handguns were INVENTED with 13, or even 15 round mags.. my ancient old Browning High Power was designed to use a standard 13 round, and the varient for the Argentine military used 17 round mags.

  • TxJack 112||

    First, in a nightclub you have a serious choke point since there is a single entrance/exit. Second, the officer was running into the situation blind and therefore was at a disadvantage. Third, as someone else posted, this guy was arrested after fighting a bar and has had multiple police contacts since then, so what happened to that wonderful red flag law gun control zealots have been pushing? As for your assertion about "gun fetishist people", a mind is a terrible thing to waste and clearly yours is beyond redemption. I never hear people such as you screaming about drunk drivers when they kill an entire family or mow down people on a sidewalk. Four Girl Scouts and a troop leader were killed over the weekend by a kid on drugs driving into a ditch where they were picking up trash. Are people who drive trucks the problem? Maybe we should make littering a capital crime so there will be no need for people to pick up trash along the road. Congratulations, you are truly a freaking idiot.

    TxDick says, "...this guy was arrested after fighting a bar and has had multiple police contacts since then..." "Congratulations, you are truly a freaking idiot."

    You gun fetishist people need to check yourselves into institutions and probably stay there forever.

    I've got a better idea, how about you and your ilk go start rounding up all of the "gun fetishists" to force them into some kind of institution. Perhaps a "camp" of some kind where they can get plenty of fresh air, and maybe while they're there they can provide some useful work. After all, "work makes you free," right?

    Oh, and one caveat: you're not allowed to use guns when you to round up all those "gun fetishists" since you find guns so icky and gross. Wouldn't want you to be hypocrites. Let me know how that turns out for you.

  • Sigivald||

    "Good guy with a gun" normally means "a random person who happens to carry legally".

    I think we can simply assume that's not the case, because California doesn't really allow that.

    Plus, you can't carry legally in CA any place that serves liquor, as far as I can tell.

    So, tell me more about this.

  • Tionico||

    that's cuz he was the ONLY Good Guy with Gun inside there. And once HE was gone, many more got killed.

    The average percentage of adults in states that "allow" concealed carry by Mother May I Cards that HAVE those Mother May I Cards is somewhere between eight and ten percent. Since ALL the folks inside were adults, if one tenth to one twelfth of those inside had actually BEEN carrying how many MORE Good Guys with Guns would have been inside there, and long before the one copper got killed? Just like the commercial where an armed robber walks into a saloon, draws on the barkeep and demands his till...... as he's busy with the keep, fifty patrons draw on the would be robber, the clicks of the safeties coming off make him turn around to see fifty HUGE pipes pointed at him......... ahd he makes in informed decision to put his own down......

  • Tionico||

    The ONE problem with relying on some government official to play the role of Mighty Mouse, and come here, i to save the day, is that Mighty Mouse is almost NEVER there in time. And, unliike the cartoons and sitcoms, real bullets can't be reversed, plugging the holes they just made as they exit the victim and reenter the barrel from which it was just fired.
    My state also prohibits ANYONE carrying inside a liquor establishment. Next state south does not. I almost never enter a bar in MY state, but have no problem entering them in the state to the south.. I don't go there to drink, but to visit, play darts, shuffleboard, cards, etc..... and I'm pretty sure no one is likely to walk in and start shooting, because the likelihood of any one of the patrons inside being armed is VERY high.

  • Hank Phillips||

    At first I thought Thousand Oaks, Texas, or mebbe Nevada. After all, California has sensitive, concerned and aware gun laws, right? But then when it turned out there was only one gun... Well, there went another No-Second-Amendment zone. There must be something irresistibly convenient about knowing in advance that the Political State has already disarmed all potential resistance in a specific place.

  • TxJack 112||

    The victims were in a bar. No state in the US allows people to carry firearms in a bar. Of Course the reason the guy chose a bar is simple. No one is armed, there is a single entrance/exit and your have a large number of people in a confined area. The same reason the shooter in Orlando chose the Pulse nightclub.

  • Exsqueezeyou||

    "...there is a single entrance/exit ..." cause they do not have fire exits or back doors in Cali.

    Problem was too many backs to shoot at and not enough chests if you know what I'm sayin'. Somebody should have yelled, "Let's roll!" Must have been full of urban cowboys.

  • Tionico||

    WRONG.... Oregon for certain allows carry in bars, but ONLY if the one carrying is not drinking. Not certain but I'm pretty sure Arizona and Montana are the same. Probably are others. But I know absolutely that Oregon allows carry inside bars if one is not consuming liquor.

  • Tionico||

    California fire codes DEMAND more than one entrance/exit to a public place. There MUST be other exits available.
    You are zero for two.

  • NoVaNick||

    Last I heard, he used a handgun (still legal in Cali) and smoke bombs, which not even the Dems are talking about banning, yet.
    As far as motive, who knows? But my guess is romantic reasons-maybe his ex-GF was there? Or maybe another disgruntled incel?

  • Tionico||

    Handgun ownership is allowed, anything purchased in the last two or three decades must be registered with the state. Getting the Mother May I Card to carry one in publis is a whole different colour of horse... Ventura County is one of the tougher ones to get your Mother May I Card. Los Angeles, next door, IS the worst except for Scam Francisco. If he was a local resident he did NOT have his Mother May I Card.... especially with his history of arrests, even for misdemeanour level crimes. I'm absolutely certain that if this guy HAD his Mother May I Card, that fact would have been all over the news reports of this incident. Its almost certain he ALSO transported that loaded handgun in his car, also against California law. Did he go through another background check to get the ammunition he used? That's one more layer that punishes the law abiding who wouild never shoot an innocent with any of the ammunition purchased..... but does nothing to stop a guy like this. Proof once again a gun control law is worthless in preventing gun crimes.

    SO no matter how it slices down, California's stupid unconstitutional gun control laws were ignored by him, and obeyed by everyone else, thus setting the stage for this massacre.

    I rarely go to bars in California, but when I do I wear a bullet-resistant vest. It is too heavy for dancing, but I only go for drinking anyhow. Light drinking, one an hour, sitting with my back to a wall and watching the entrance and the rest rooms. Also the eyes of the bouncers and bartenders.

    I drink with my off hand. The other rests in my lap, close to my left side IWB holster. On my ball cap what looks like a small silly sports mascot actually conceals a cop cam that I ordered for three payments of $29.95 off late-night TV. It lenses a broad view over the hat brim continuously recording one frame a second in low light for up to 7 hrs. Will be very handy if/when something needs to be justified. My phone records audio around me continuously as well, downloading to my home computer every hour.

    By preference I frequent bars that have a high number of police responses, especially gunfire reports. It may seem like a strange hobby, but it is more exciting than staying home playing violent video games. You just have to be patient.

    Nope., Too law abiding to enter a liquor establishment in California, where doing so is a felony bust. Even if all you did was stand there oblivious to the fact you forgot to remove your piece before you walked in to the bar. Or because you did not want to risk having your car broken into in the car park out back and your gun stolen... for which you would ALSO be responsible.

    Washington State also imposes felony punishment on anyone caught with a concealed handgun inside a bar, ubless you are the OWNER. Then you may carry whilst on duty in that bar.

    Incident in rural Eastern Washington a few years back.... new feller begins to patronise a tavern just on the edge of a smaller town, becomes a regular, strikes up friendships with a few of the other regulars, and the staff at the place. He was welcomed, well thought of, part of the places culture. He typically sat at a table out of the main traffic lines, but not way off in the corner isolated. Part of the scene, not in the middle of it. One fine evening well after dark, as things were going along as usual, a stranger walked in, looked around, wandered over to the bar, begins to chat with the keep... then pulls out a handgun, points it at the keep... and demands the till to be put into a bag and given him. A couple patrons see the gun, start hollering, robber begins to get a bit nervous, sweeps the crowd and orders silence, then continues to cover the keep.... recent new guy calmly stands up, draws his concealed handun, takes aim at the perp, has a clean shot, no one in background, sqeezes off one round. Perp falls dead on the floor, panic ensues as everyone else expects more gunfire...... several had already called the coppers on their magic phones, Recent New Guy calmly reholsters his piece, turns and calmly walks out the front door into the night.

    Coppers arrive, find perp dead on the floor, begin their investigation, taking statements, names., looked for empty rass, find none. Suspect a revolver was used. Not one patron or staff knew the guy's name beyind his common first name, No one knew where he lived, what he drove, where he worked... always paid cash so no card receipts. The guy had simplu disappeared through the confusion and into the night. Sheriff asks everyone that if Recent New Guy ever happens to show up again, "please let him know I'd like to talk to him.".Sure thing, officer. Never came back, no one to this day knows who he is. No one knows for sure whether the sheriff would charge him for the felony firearm in bar count.
    His shooting was clearly justified as lethal force to end an imminent and clear threat to a third party. One man did what had to be done, then, knowing he had commited a crime by his possession inside a prohibited place, disappeared.

    What was the shooter doing with a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds? Everyone in California knows that this is illegal.
