'The State Has Been One of the Largest Perpetrators of Gender Inequality and Violence': Podcast

Meet Feminists for Liberty's Kat Murti, who wants to make libertarianism the default setting for women, people of color, and Millennials.

If you think libertarianism is just for privileged white dudes, you really need to meet Kat Murti.

She's the 29-year-old co-founder of Feminists for Liberty, a group that is "anti-sexism and anti-statism, pro-markets and pro-choice on everything." A native of both India and Texas, she wants to make libertarianism the default option among women, people of color, and millennials.

"We believe the state has been one of the largest perpetrators of gender inequality and gender violence," she told a reporter at the recent Women's March in Washington, D.C. "We want government to get out of the way and for people to live their own lives, their best lives."

Murti's day job is doing digital outreach for the Cato Institute and she's also a board member for Students for a Sensible Drug Policy. Reason's Nick Gillespie spoke with her about feminism, individualism, intersectionality, and more.

    Someone hasn't seen Life of Julia. (Or needs it mansplained to her.)

  • vek||

    The video scared the crap out of me. One, that someone would make it thinking it was a great idea. Two, that some people who watched it probably thought that was the exact life they wanted...

    "A native of both India and Texas... "

    Just HOW does that WORK??!?! She was half-born in India, then they cryo-suspended the birthing process, and flew mother and child to Texas, thawed them out, and completed the birthing process?!?!?

    (Is this a NEW way to counter Xenophobia, perhaps?)

    Inquiring minds want to KNOW, Government Almighty DAMNINTY Fresh Breath!!!!

  • SQRLSY One||

    Brown sugar!!! Bring it ON, baby!

    (Or is that a sexist thing to say these days??!?!)

    This doesn't bode well for equality of outcome.

  • SIV||

    While they're mostly about diversity, intersectionality, safe spaces and the internal organizational intricacies of reporting, adjudicating and sanctioning harassment Students for a Sensible Drug Policy does finally come around to the "drug issue", sort of.

    "anti-sexism and anti-statism, pro-markets and pro-choice on everything."

    To your typical obscene-hate wearing, Woman's Marching feminist, this statement is nonsense. Being "anti-sexist," to them, means *overruling* the market when the men who run the Korprashuns do sexist things.

    The right for men who run kkkorporations to operate freely in the market, subject only to basic level-playing-field rules (like no fraud), is simply anathema to mainstream feminists, and will remain so.

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    Didn't you have the actual Eddie name back for awhile? Or is this someone pretending to be Eddie's alt account? Or did you change your name for fun again.

  • Eidde||

    I tried to go back to Eddie, but someone had appropriated that handle, so spelling it "Eddie" backward was really the closest I could get.

    We're sorry for the confusion. Thank you for your patience as we try to bring you the best in quality snark.

    Are you perhaps an item of Ediacaran biota? If not, why not? Please explain...
    As you would, to a child?

    15,000 words or more, in Ediacaran font, double-spaced, please... ?

  • gah87||

    Formerly Vendian?!
    Well, now I've seen everything....

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    I was confused because I thought I saw recently an actual "Eddie" posting. But maybe I just mixed the names up. Because the person's posts read like you.

  • Eidde||

    You can tell which is the real Eddie by looking for the clever, witty posts...and ruling them out as mine.

  • Eidde||

    From the mainstream feminist perspective, it is a violation of women's rights for a business to act in ways feminists don't like.

  • Crusty Juggler||

    I like how you think you have your finger on the pulse of feminism.

  • Eidde||

    By all means find the mainstream feminists who think it's OK for employers to set the terms and conditions of employment, even if that means female employees have to buy their own birth control, etc.

  • Eidde||

    Of course I may be thinking of the spokesladies in the media, there may be a silent majority of professed feminists who disagree with what the would-be "leaders" are saying. I haven't done a poll.

  • Crusty Juggler||

    Not all self-described feminists share the exact same beliefs, Eddo, just like not all self-described Catholics share the exact same beliefs, but you probably knew that already.

    even if that means female employees have to buy their own birth control, etc.

    Ah, I see you wanted to once again insert your bloodied hobbyhorse into a discussion so you could beat it until it was even more dead. Got it.

  • Eidde||

    You seem irritated.

    How about "hostile environment harassment" (by which I mean Playboy calendars in the break room, not raping employees) - there's an example I could have used without you saying I'm shilling for Big Playboy.

  • SQRLSY One||

    I, for one, am HIGHLY offended that, in ALL of the work spaces I have EVER worked in, there was NEVER enough Playboy (or Hus-slut-ler, not being biased here) pictures displayed!!! WHY does MY offendedness, NOT seem to matter?!?! Hunh?

  • Eidde||

    Let's you have a litigious, well-funded League of Horny Guys? I mean, you have the numbers, you just have to ORGANIZE!

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Crusty doesn't like generalities to have a discussion about. It matters not that what you say might be true with some of that general group, so we can talk about it.

    He posts links of teachers banging kinds instead.

  • Azathoth!!||

    I love how you ride in, flailing stupidly about, hoping and praying that your spastic twitching will white knight for someone, anyone, plllleeeaase!

  • Eidde||

    He's not white-knighting, he simply doesn't like me very much. Not that he has to, I'm an acquired taste.

  • Azathoth!!||

    you're not the only one he does it to.

  • Crusty Juggler||

    quit virtue signaling, snowflake.

  • Crusty Juggler||

  • Azathoth!!||

    And she was at the Women's march, arm in arm with people who want government to control every aspect of their lives, yeah, THAT'S libertarian.

  • Eidde||

    That's outreach, baby!

  • Brandybuck||

    Pro choice on everything. Choose to kill your baby. For liberty.

    Yeah, I don't want government in control of reproductive functions, but this idea of abortion as a sacred sacrament of feminism is stupid. Go ahead and ban me, I don't give a fuck any more.

  • Horatio||

    "I'm a [identity] for Liberty! I believe the state is the one of the largest perpetrators of [identity] inequality and [identity] violence!"

    I want to say "fuck off identitarian in sheep's clothing" but then I realize my ideology will continue to have a snowball's chance in hell until it becomes something that mainstream women want. So...go grrrrl! Post that shit on tumblr or whatever.

  • MarkLastname||

    Yeah... it's be better if people could be grownups and acknowledge general principles occasionally. It's hard not to see tribal reasoning as inevitably leading to statist favoritism.

    "Meet Feminists for Liberty's Kat Murti, who wants to make libertarianism the default setting for women, people of color, and Millennials."

    Nothing says libertarianism like identity politics

  • vek||

    IMO the main problem with feminists is that they fundamentally do not acknowledge reality. Men and women are different, but one could still argue "equal." But radically different none the less. They harp on disparities in income, outcomes of all sort, etc because of men doing better in some ways... Completely ignoring that men do worse in other ways... AND that it's all because of natural aptitude/inclinations, and sexism probably doesn't play 1/10th a role in it anymore.

    They want identical outcomes, which are impossible in a FREE and uncoerced world. So since their premise is wrong, they seek to right un-rightable wrongs via force. Which is bullshit. I believe women should be able to study computer science if they want, and the fact is they will be hired if they are any good... But this nonsense of trying to have 50/50 perfect distribution or else it must be sexism is horse shit.

    Any feminists who may read this, I implore you to look at the hundreds (thousands?) of scientific studies about biology, psychology, preferences, etc. They all show great differences in averages. Men and women overlap on most things, but clear trends on almost everything outside of the small overlap in the middle.
