Baltimore Removes Confederate Monuments Overnight, Hope Hicks Is the New Scaramucci, Bad Reviews for Trump's Latest Performance: A.M. Links

  • Reviews are in for Trump's Tuesday press conference about violence in Charlottesville, and they're not good. "Donald Trump has a very clear attitude about morality: He doesn't believe in it," writes John Harwood at CNBC. Here are the New York Daily News and New York Post covers for today:

  • Baltimore authorities removed three Confederate monuments overnight Wednesday.
  • Hope Hicks has been named the new White House communications director, The Daily Caller is reporting. She was previously the administrartion's director of strategic communications.
  • U.S. teen overdose deaths involving opioids tripled between 1999 and 2007, held steady for several years, fell again in 2012-2014, and then spiked again in 2014-2015, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • A Ukrainian coder whose malware program was used to hack the Democratic National Committee is now working with the FBI.
  • The president is spreading fake news about Amazon again.

    Reviews are in for Trump's Tuesday press conference about violence in Charlottesville, and they're not good.

    This four years is going to be the greatest span of unintentional entertainment we have ever seen.

  • DJF||

    So which of Trumps press conferences have gotten good reviews by these reviewers?

  • Conchfritters||

    Reviews not so much, but the advertisers have to be happy as Trump has put something on TV that people want to watch (whether they want to or not) again.

  • Rhywun||

    David Duke loved it - my morning news told me so.

    And depressing.

  • Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting||

    If there's any silver lining out of recent events, the media seem to have temporarily forgotten about their neo-McCarthyism.

  • ||

    And shifted to its Jacobin-Bolshevik leanings.

    Selling that the violence was one-sided once again proves they couldn't care less about accuracy if it goes against the narrative

    Trump should stand his ground. He's right all played a part in this stupid, unnecessary mess.

  • Mickey Rat||

    The sharks smell blood in the water!

    Of course, the bad review is that Trump did not say what the reviewer would say in the precise language the reviewer would use. There was not any chance the reviews would be "good", that does not seve the purpose they were written for.

  • Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting||

    It's actually pretty hilarious that Trump's press conferences end up being turned into struggle sessions.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Its really the only ability the left has to fight anymore. People are ignoring lefty media in record numbers and SJWs riots did not start a race war.

    The funniest thing is that most of the people following Trump on Twitter are probably media folks waiting for him to say something and he knows this. The media is so butthurt that they cannot filter what comes out of the Whitehouse.

  • Eek Barba Durkle||

    Because no one i slookign at the comments from yesterday's articles at this point...

    This narrative, pushed by the popular media AND reason, that Trump has been reticent to disavow racists and racist groups is Grade A Horseshit.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoXThCb8EZA

    I expect such dishonesty from a good portion of the media. I don't want to come to reason and be faced with articles delving into urban myths being pushed by the DNC.

    You owe your readers a retraction and apology. Brain Doherty AND reason.

  • Mickey Rat||

    Unless it has something to do with one of their pet issues, most of the writers for Reason buy into the mainstream journalist conventional wisdom without much in the way of scepticism or independent thinking.

  • timbo||

    When the world gets this ginned up and hysterical about antifa riots and destruction, when everyone is outraged about antifa death threats and calls for murder of people with other opinions, until everyone spend weeks talking about how unhinged and terrible the leftists are after a shooting spree in the capital at some baseball filed, I could give a shit about any of this. This is a tactic more than anything and trump is not very bright.

    The only thing that deserves more condemnation on one side over the other is that that psycho murdered that girl with his car.

    The only thing I agree with the squirrel about is that up until that point, there were two rioting factions of savage scumbags. Skinheads are psycho scum as are antifa fascist leftist.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Who cares that lefty neo-Nazis and lefty SJWs kills each other.

    The end is the same- less lefties.

  • timbo||

    Exactly. Smart people do not go to these things. Protest away dipshits.

    This is called thinning the herd.

  • Zeb||

    Yes, what we need is more violence. That will help. Maybe even some kind of final solution to this problems of leftists can be found.

  • timbo||

    We are not calling for more violence. Leave that to the leftists. They cannot be reached or educated. They are stupid. Stupid people riot and commit violence.

    All I am saying is that, since they are going to do it anyway, let them exterminate themselves.

    Better yet, allow idiots to out themselves as moronic racists or moronic Marxists(same evil). That allows rational discourse by those of us who are not dumb enough to riot.

    At least the redneck leftist nazis have the balls to show their face; or stupidity.

  • Zeb||

    Better yet, allow idiots to out themselves as moronic racists or moronic Marxists(same evil). That allows rational discourse by those of us who are not dumb enough to riot.

    I'm with you there. But I don't think more violence in the streets (even if it's purely between people I despise) is ever good for the cause of liberty.

  • timbo||

    Yes. They will be Marxist revolutionaries unfortunately. Obama, Bernie, Che, Michael Moore, Al Sharpton.. and the horde will cheer.

    Where is the outrage over Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and FDR statues?

    I know they did not own slaves but as a percentage of the total population during their time, these three guys caused far more misery per capita. Its just not as gripping as slavery.
    I just hope they do not destroy these statues. Put them in museums. Fine by me. If black people are smart, they will start to look a little deeper into erasing history.
    Oh, and every statue coming down the world over will never stop the bitching.

  • NoVaNick||

    I have long thought that it is time they rename the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Virginia and Maryland. Not only was Wilson an outspoken racist/eugenicist/nativist who established segregation in federal employment and the military, the new bridge was grossly over budget-fitting I suppose to honor the father of the modern bureaucratic state.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Only certain racist Democrat figures can be attacked right now. Woodrow Wilson is not one of them as the left has not created the proper narrative.

    Robert E. Lee, the Democrat, is fair game.

  • timbo||

    When they go after all the things in Jefferson's and Washington's honor, will anyone have the balls to say:

    If it weren't for these two guys, this nation would not be the most prosperous and wealthy nation on earth. Because of these two guys, our rich and poor are still far better off than the poorest people in any country on earth. Regardless of your level of wealth or income, you are more wealthy in the united states than some of the richest people in other countries. What they did may be objectionable but the foundation they planted allowed for the development of the strongest, freest economy ever known to history. Their words and writings provided more freedom for the black man, ultimately, than black people can currently enjoy anywhere on earth.

    Pick up a book. Stop spouting what you learned in American public schools. Read what Frederick Douglas said about the declaration of independence and the founding fathers. He got it.

    I realize that cannot be said in our class warfare state but would be refreshing.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    The huge irony that lefties don't seem to grasp is that without Founding Fathers and the protections of the Constitution, they would not be able to do what they are doing.

    When they push to destroy what made America great, at some point non-lefties might just say okay- No more USA. Then there is not more law and we have all the guns.

    Lefties just cannot have people learning from history because then the Democratic Party is the Party of slavery and Jim Crowe laws and keeping guns from black folks and that socialism never works.

    Judge Tanney is not in anyway associated with the confederacy. He made a bad ruling in Dredd Scott. Remember when people lied and said it would stop at confederate statues?

  • Juice||

    Why is there a statue commemorating him?

  • Jgalt1975||

    Well, except for the part where he authored a poorly-reasoned Supreme Court decision that both denigrated the humanity of blacks and facilitated the expansion of slavery into the non-slave states, thereby assuring that the abolition of slavery had to be dealt with as a national political question, leading in turn to secession of what would become the Confederate states.

    Did all of Washington meet in the Watergate to confirm this story?

  • Griffin3||

    I have been coding since '81, and I find The Nations argument on the DNC leak being an inside leak vs a hack very convincing. Everyone who's ever copied bulk files knows that 22MB/s is the transfer rate for USB-2 drives (18MB/s for the cheap-ass ones), and no one ever has gotten that speed in a transatlantic connection, or even a cross-city connection here in the states. And to fake file access times would be a sign of a non-functional level of paranoia.

    [According to Nation's source: "On the evening of July 5, 2016, 1,976 megabytes of data were downloaded from the DNC's server. The operation took 87 seconds. This yields a transfer rate of 22.7 megabytes per second."]

    That's a 2GB thumb drive, and everyone here knows it. Now, whether a foreign actor blackmailed a local employee to copy he files for them, sure, that could happen. But a Romanian hacker pulling the files for his Russian paymasters? We wish the DNC (or anyone else) had that sort of bandwidth.

    Local foodies flocked to Tribeca on Tuesday night to get a taste of orange-coated delicacies — such as "Flamin' Hot Limón Chicken Tacos" and "Purrfectly Fried Green Tomatoes" — as the Cheetos pop-up restaurant kicked off its three-day stay in the Big Apple.

    Denton School District Removes Assistant Principal Who Wrote Political Pepe the Frog Kid's Book

    Hauser's book featured themes and imagery consistent with the white nationalist movement. Pepe the Frog, Hauser's lead character, is a favored mascot of Donald Trump-supporting racists across social media. Many of Trump's supporters also refer to themselves as centipedes, stemming from a viral YouTube video that features an audio track from a nature video of centipedes laid over video of some of Trump's debate and speech highlights.

    "I'm not concerned with using those characters because there is nothing wrong with those characters. They're not bad characters," he said. "I disagree with the [alt-right or white supremacist] label. I think that label was put on Pepe in an attempt to silence conservatives. Explaining White Nationalism's Anti-statist Bedfellows

    The appeal of white nationalism to libertarian anti-statists should not be surprising. After all, nationalist and revanchist movements have historically represented powerful tools for mobilizing secession and other forms of political resistance to "the state." Their common cause is all the stronger in multicultural, liberal democracies where ethnic grievances can be called upon to portray "the state" less as a political compact between competing groups, and more as tyrannical sovereign infringing on some sub-group's right to self-determination.

  • Crusty Juggler||

    The influential anarcho-capitalist and "enemy of the state" himself, Murray Rothbard, spelled out the paleo-libertarian strategy of "right-wing populism" with perfect candor — more than two decades before the Trump presidential campaign executed it with astonishing success. By harnessing the white working class, Rothbard argued, a Pat Buchanan-style nominee could potentially "short-circuit the dominant media and intellectual elites," "marginalize Bush conservatives" and create an opening to steal the Republican nomination. Once in power, Rothbard's crypto-libertarian would then take to "dismantling the existing areas of State and elite rule" by slashing taxes, abolitioning welfare, reversing the civil rights act, "unleashing" local police on crooks and vagrants, and enacting an "America First" foreign policy. Sound familiar?

    Oh yeah, Hillary lost. Removing statutes really sticks it to people who didn't vote for her.

    Its trying to change that the Taliban did the exact same thing with statues they deemed "offensive" to their narrative.

  • NEET||

    Its trying to change history. Its an attempt to say that the Democratic Party did not put those statues up and it is the Party of slavery.
    Fags were ignorant of these shit parties' history before the statues were taken down. Anybody who cares about this knowledge that's useless nowadays can easily find and learn it.

    Its trying to change that a civil war happened over states rights and slavery.
    The Civil War was mostly about slavery though with states' rights playing a minor role. (Though I do believe the civil war was a terrible loss of life, and the states should've been allowed to peacefully exit the union.)

    Its trying to change that Trump won and is trying to dismantle government as much as he can.
    No, russiagate is trying to change the former. And the latter is laughable.

    Most importantly, its trying to change that Hillary LOST.
    And it's impossible to change that unless they succeed with russiagate (protip: they won't).

    You seem to be inferring a lot of stuff from the removal of these Confederate monuments, and most of what you said stuff is incorrect. And, dude, what's with your Hillary fetish? She's disgusting, so I don't why you always have you mind on her. Spending too much time with Crusty?

  • Zeb||

    Even if they do succeed in removing Trump somehow, nothing will change that Hillary lost.

  • NEET||

    While technically true, the implication is that she would be put in office. That would also be the day I neck myself.

  • Zeb||

    Who ever thinks that's what will happen is seriously deluded. There's no do-over for elections. If Trump is removed, Pence (or whoever ends up VP) is in.

  • NEET||

    I hope I"m being delusional, because the thought of it leaves me panic stricken.
    But, hypothetically, if evidence surfaced that proved beyond reasonable doubt that Trump and his campaign (including Pence) had hot sweaty relations with Russia, do you really think they'd let Pence be the President? Hell, would Paul Ryan be given a chance?

  • Zeb||

    Assuming the Republicans still control congress, which will be the case for at least another year and a half, it definitely won't be Hillary and would probably be some relatively inoffensive rep like Ford.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    The Civil War was mostly about slavery though with states' rights playing a minor role. (Though I do believe the civil war was a terrible loss of life, and the states should've been allowed to peacefully exit the union.)

    Reasons for Secession
    The civil war was mostly about state's rights which included slavery. There are many more reasons and most are never discussed in history books to educuate people.

    I am just spit balling as the ulterior motives of lefties regarding the statues. Lefties always say one thing and do another.

  • NEET||

    I'm well aware of the other motivations that spurred the states' decision to secede. But slavery was the big ticket. (Which makes sense economically and culturally for the South.)

    I am just spit balling as the ulterior motives of lefties regarding the statues. Lefties always say one thing and do another.
    Be careful, man, I hear if you think about Hillary and other nasty creatures too much, they appear in front of you and force you to engage in snoo-snoo.

  • Juice||

    Included? It was the central issue. It was the main topic of all the declarations listed there. I think there may be one exception. The Confederate constitution was just the US constitution with language added that explicitly protected the institution of slavery. The civil war was about secession versus preserving the union, but secession happened because of the issue of slavery.

  • Number 2||

    Of course, lost in this debate is the question why there were Confederate statutes in a city that was supposedly on the Union side -- against its will, admittedly -- during the War of the Rebellion, a/k/a the Civil War.

    America's attitude toward its Civil War is complex and multifaceted. I am old enough to remember when there was serious debate over whether it should be called the "Civil War" (preferred by Northerners) of the "War Between the States" (preferred by Southerners). The 1958 World Book Encyclopedia used the latter; the 1964 edition used the former. Much of our memory of that war is colored by the fact that after years of bloody conflict, and an even longer period of Reconstruction that in many ways was nastier and more divisive than the war itself, we had to rebuild a single nation without one section remaining bitter, alienated, and spoiling for a rematch. It's a shame that this subtlety is lost in what has become an identity politics issue and an idiotic reaction from white supremacists. If Ken Burns has released his Civil War documentary today, he would be vilified as a racist and defended by neo-Nazis.

  • OM Nullum gratuitum prandium||

    Why is the press and so many giving a hard time to the president? Has anybody pondered the possibility that there COULD be such a thing as fine people who protest alonside white supremacists and Nazis?

    Cut Cheeto-man some slack, man!

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Who cares. The first Amendment protects crazy lefty neo-Nazis protests and crazy lefty SJW protests.

  • OM Nullum gratuitum prandium||

    Re: loveconstitutuon1789,

    Who protects Cheeto-man from his own stupidity?

    And why do Trumpistas all share this penchant for replying to comments with non sequiturs?

  • Eek Barba Durkle||

    Wow - a non-sequitur AND an accusation of non-sequitur, all in the same 2-line post. Well done.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    I REALLY struck a nerve pointing out Nazis were/are socialists just like lefty SJWs.

  • Zeb||

    Gosh, yeah, no one has ever made that observation before. You're just blowing people's minds here.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    At least the minds of the LINOs here.

  • Zeb||

    I don't think you quite get Old Mexican.

  • Bra Ket||

    A week ago I rolled my eyes at people who felt it was necessary to make this point (including reason writers). But now...

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Clearly lefties don't like to hear it and forget that both groups are socialist in nature.

    They both want to control the means of production.

  • Crusty Juggler||

    I'm going to regret asking, but the "Unite the Right" protestors are lefties?

  • loveconstitution1789||

    All lefties are bad but not all people are lefties.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    They are neo-nazis right? Maybe the militia groups are not socialists but the other groups listed under the "Unite the Right" are socialist groups.

    That is the fallacy. Nazis are lefties claiming to be conservatives. Conservative people don't get out and riot.

  • Zeb||

    Is it correct to assume that right-wing=conservative=not-socialist? Some people seem to be using them interchangeably here, but I'm not sure that's appropriate.

  • Zeb||

    That has become a popular claim. Though I'm not sure that "right wing" is necessarily anti-socialist/collectivist.

  • NotAnotherSkippy||

    I'm not sure that "libertarians" aren't either.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    Right wing in America are conservatives. Change happens slowly and via large scale support.

    People associate religion with being right wing but they are not necessarily on the same side and many religious people can be confused with socialist when they are just charitable . Even most of those people are not okay with government controlling the means of production.

    Its hard to be conservative with small government and fiscal minimalism and be a socialist.

    The left in America is described as revolutionary, socially liberal, and socialist.

    We Libertarians are in the middle because we're socially liberal and conservative on issues like fiscal policy.

  • Zeb||

    The southern Democrats who wanted to preserve slavery and later segregation were conservatives. They wanted to keep the racial status quo in place, which is a conservative impulse. So the neo-Confederates, at least, can reasonably be described as conservative. As for the "Nazis" (or whatever they were), I guess there is a debate to be had about how to classify them. They are distinct both from what is commonly identified today as "the left" and from American style Conservatism. It's kind of silly to argue about who they should be classified with. They are their own movement that you can't blame on today's left or right. Maybe we should actually describe different political ideologies instead of trying to fit them into neat categories like left/right.

    Baltimore authorities removed three Confederate monuments overnight Wednesday.

    The Stalinist purge continues apace. And that's quite a slap in the face of the MD legislature that was imprisoned by Lincoln, no?

  • Jerryskids||

    Seems suspicious that the Baltimore mayor and city council waited until now to remove the monuments - now that the white supremacists are being exposed for what they are, those Republican racists in Baltimore know their days are numbered so they're moving quickly to destroy any evidence of their bigotry and hate. You're not fooling anybody, Baltimore, we know who you are and what you are and you won't get away with this attempt to sweep your past under the rug. Someday we'll elect Democrats and blacks in Baltimore and then you'll get yours.

  • Drave Robber||

    That's unfair to Stalinists. In Eastern Europe after WW2, they purged libraries but left many monuments standing.

    A Ukrainian coder whose malware program was used to hack the Democratic National Committee is now working with the FBI.

    I thought it was a Russian malware program and the Ukranian connection just a cover story. Or, wait, no - there actually was no hack, it was an insider downloading the info and the Russian hack itself was a cover story. So is the FBI hire a payback for this guy providing a cover story for the DNC "hack" that the FBI oddly never wanted to take a close look at? Who actually hired the guy or approved the hire and what is their connection to Hillary or the DNC? There's an easy conspiracy story here.

  • damikesc||

    Hey, don't we have proof that Hillary worked with Ukrainians? Like ACTUAL proof?

  • Hank Stamper||

    Baltimore authorities removed three Confederate monuments overnight Wednesday.

    I am told this one action has brought to Baltimore the following: 100% employment, all gangs immediately disbanded, no more property theft, the streets are now clean, all corrupt police were jailed and the sewer and water lines are working properly.

  • loveconstitution1789||

    As typical with Democrat controlled cities, wasting taxpayer funds for some hyped political purpose always bring them closer to complete failure as a municipality.

  • Tom Bombadil||

    However...
    This is the way to do it.
    .
    Decide if the statue stays or goes.
    If it goes, shut the fuck up and remove it quickly and safely.

    If the statue stays, just STFU.

  • Number 2||

    Give Baltimore a break. After all, this was the city with enough sense to reject the Democrat playbook and not impose and idiotically high minimum wage law. Don't be surprised if they come closer to 100% employment sooner than other Democrats strongholds.

  • Jerryskids||

    But if Trump started acting dignified, what would CNN and the NYT and the WaPo have to talk about? Have you seen the numbers on the ad revenue since they switched their format from straight news to all-Trump-all-the-time? Yuuge numbers! You think they'd want to give that up?

Right now these fascists, from Trump on down, are moving very quickly to hammer into place their fascist regime and this must be STOPPED. The organization Refuse Fascism has called for people to come into the streets and public squares and cities and towns across the country beginning on November 4 and stay in the streets day after day and night after night until the DEMAND is met: This Nightmare Must End: The Trump/Pence Regime Must GO!

    I didn't see this posted, but Oregon now has the "nation's most progressive reproductive health policy"
