  • Reviews are in for Trump's Tuesday press conference about violence in Charlottesville, and they're not good. "Donald Trump has a very clear attitude about morality: He doesn't believe in it," writes John Harwood at CNBC. Here are the New York Daily News and New York Post covers for today:
  • Baltimore authorities removed three Confederate monuments overnight Wednesday.
  • Hope Hicks has been named the new White House communications director, The Daily Caller is reporting. She was previously the administrartion's director of strategic communications.
  • U.S. teen overdose deaths involving opioids tripled between 1999 and 2007, held steady for several years, fell again in 2012-2014, and then spiked again in 2014-2015, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • A Ukrainian coder whose malware program was used to hack the Democratic National Committee is now working with the FBI.
  • The president is spreading fake news about Amazon again.

Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt - many jobs being lost!

Reviews are in for Trump's Tuesday press conference about violence in Charlottesville, and they're not good.

This four years is going to be the greatest span of unintentional entertainment we have ever seen.

    1. DJF   8 years ago

So which of Trumps press conferences have gotten good reviews by these reviewers?

      1. Conchfritters   8 years ago

Reviews not so much, but the advertisers have to be happy as Trump has put something on TV that people want to watch (whether they want to or not) again.

    2. Rhywun   8 years ago

David Duke loved it - my morning news told me so.

    3. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

      Hello.

      I got nothing.

The stupidity is over whelming and suffocating.

      And depressing.

      1. NEET   8 years ago

How long until everybody goes back to the greatest delusio--I mean scandal known to man, russiagate?

        1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

If there's any silver lining out of recent events, the media seem to have temporarily forgotten about their neo-McCarthyism.

          1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

And shifted to its Jacobin-Bolshevik leanings.

Selling that the violence was one-sided once again proves they couldn't care less about accuracy if it goes against the narrative

Trump should stand his ground. He's right all played a part in this stupid, unnecessary mess.

    4. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

The sharks smell blood in the water!

Of course, the bad review is that Trump did not say what the reviewer would say in the precise language the reviewer would use. There was not any chance the reviews would be "good", that does not seve the purpose they were written for.

      1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

It's actually pretty hilarious that Trump's press conferences end up being turned into struggle sessions.

        1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Its really the only ability the left has to fight anymore. People are ignoring lefty media in record numbers and SJWs riots did not start a race war.

The funniest thing is that most of the people following Trump on Twitter are probably media folks waiting for him to say something and he knows this. The media is so butthurt that they cannot filter what comes out of the Whitehouse.

    5. Eek Barba Durkle   8 years ago

Because no one i slookign at the comments from yesterday's articles at this point...

This narrative, pushed by the popular media AND reason, that Trump has been reticent to disavow racists and racist groups is Grade A Horseshit.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoXThCb8EZA

I expect such dishonesty from a good portion of the media. I don't want to come to reason and be faced with articles delving into urban myths being pushed by the DNC.

You owe your readers a retraction and apology. Brain Doherty AND reason.

      1. Mickey Rat   8 years ago

Unless it has something to do with one of their pet issues, most of the writers for Reason buy into the mainstream journalist conventional wisdom without much in the way of scepticism or independent thinking.

    6. timbo   8 years ago

When the world gets this ginned up and hysterical about antifa riots and destruction, when everyone is outraged about antifa death threats and calls for murder of people with other opinions, until everyone spend weeks talking about how unhinged and terrible the leftists are after a shooting spree in the capital at some baseball filed, I could give a shit about any of this. This is a tactic more than anything and trump is not very bright.

The only thing that deserves more condemnation on one side over the other is that that psycho murdered that girl with his car.

The only thing I agree with the squirrel about is that up until that point, there were two rioting factions of savage scumbags. Skinheads are psycho scum as are antifa fascist leftist.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Who cares that lefty neo-Nazis and lefty SJWs kills each other.

The end is the same- less lefties.

        1. timbo   8 years ago

Exactly. Smart people do not go to these things. Protest away dipshits.

This is called thinning the herd.

        2. Zeb   8 years ago

Yes, what we need is more violence. That will help. Maybe even some kind of final solution to this problems of leftists can be found.

          1. timbo   8 years ago

We are not calling for more violence. Leave that to the leftists. They cannot be reached or educated. They are stupid. Stupid people riot and commit violence.

All I am saying is that, since they are going to do it anyway, let them exterminate themselves.

Better yet, allow idiots to out themselves as moronic racists or moronic Marxists(same evil). That allows rational discourse by those of us who are not dumb enough to riot.

At least the redneck leftist nazis have the balls to show their face; or stupidity.

            1. Zeb   8 years ago

Better yet, allow idiots to out themselves as moronic racists or moronic Marxists(same evil). That allows rational discourse by those of us who are not dumb enough to riot.

I'm with you there. But I don't think more violence in the streets (even if it's purely between people I despise) is ever good for the cause of liberty.

              1. NotAnotherSkippy   8 years ago

And yet that is exactly the argument of the left. Recall: when is it ok to punch a Nazi?

        3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

          Fewer.

          1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

The terminus is tantamount- sparse pinkos.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Baltimore authorities removed three Confederate monuments overnight Wednesday.

    And moved them to Indianapolis.

    1. Juice   8 years ago

They'll just install different ones 20 years later.

      1. timbo   8 years ago

Yes. They will be Marxist revolutionaries unfortunately. Obama, Bernie, Che, Michael Moore, Al Sharpton.. and the horde will cheer.

Where is the outrage over Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and FDR statues?

I know they did not own slaves but as a percentage of the total population during their time, these three guys caused far more misery per capita. Its just not as gripping as slavery.
I just hope they do not destroy these statues. Put them in museums. Fine by me. If black people are smart, they will start to look a little deeper into erasing history.
Oh, and every statue coming down the world over will never stop the bitching.

        1. NoVaNick   8 years ago

I have long thought that it is time they rename the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Virginia and Maryland. Not only was Wilson an outspoken racist/eugenicist/nativist who established segregation in federal employment and the military, the new bridge was grossly over budget-fitting I suppose to honor the father of the modern bureaucratic state.

          1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Only certain racist Democrat figures can be attacked right now. Woodrow Wilson is not one of them as the left has not created the proper narrative.

Robert E. Lee, the Democrat, is fair game.

            1. timbo   8 years ago

When they go after all the things in Jefferson's and Washington's honor, will anyone have the balls to say:

If it weren't for these two guys, this nation would not be the most prosperous and wealthy nation on earth. Because of these two guys, our rich and poor are still far better off than the poorest people in any country on earth. Regardless of your level of wealth or income, you are more wealthy in the united states than some of the richest people in other countries. What they did may be objectionable but the foundation they planted allowed for the development of the strongest, freest economy ever known to history. Their words and writings provided more freedom for the black man, ultimately, than black people can currently enjoy anywhere on earth.

Pick up a book. Stop spouting what you learned in American public schools. Read what Frederick Douglas said about the declaration of independence and the founding fathers. He got it.

I realize that cannot be said in our class warfare state but would be refreshing.

              1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

The huge irony that lefties don't seem to grasp is that without Founding Fathers and the protections of the Constitution, they would not be able to do what they are doing.

When they push to destroy what made America great, at some point non-lefties might just say okay- No more USA. Then there is not more law and we have all the guns.

Lefties just cannot have people learning from history because then the Democratic Party is the Party of slavery and Jim Crowe laws and keeping guns from black folks and that socialism never works.

The Taliban say that Baltimore is doing it wrong, they need to use explosives

      1. NoVaNick   8 years ago

Don't worry-that will be next-after some antifa derp ends up getting crushed by one of these statues trying to pull it down.

        1. Krabappel   8 years ago

I really hope that gets caught on video.

    3. Rhywun   8 years ago

Racial problem solved. I'm glad that's over.

      1. Riomaggiore   8 years ago

They'll stop killing each other and start achieving any second now.

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I was referring to the problem with wypipo.

    4. WakaWaka   8 years ago

Judge Tanney is not in anyway associated with the confederacy. He made a bad ruling in Dredd Scott. Remember when people lied and said it would stop at confederate statues?

      1. Juice   8 years ago

Why is there a statue commemorating him?

      2. Jgalt1975   8 years ago

Well, except for the part where he authored a poorly-reasoned Supreme Court decision that both denigrated the humanity of blacks and facilitated the expansion of slavery into the non-slave states, thereby assuring that the abolition of slavery had to be dealt with as a national political question, leading in turn to secession of what would become the Confederate states.

    5. Roger Wilco   8 years ago

What happens we we run out of statues?

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Eerily similar to what happens after the lefties ban all "hate speech".

Greatest name for White House comm worker since Josh Earnest.

    Black Guys with Guns

To fight fascism, we need to be better armed than the fascists, both literally and intellectually. The best way to fight speech is with more speech. And the best way to protect yourself from violent whites today is the same as it was in 1955: Black guys with guns.

TW: includes links from TReasonNN (get it?)

    1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

      "Let's you and him fight."

    2. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

I've heard that the great gun control movement began when White Democrats became scared of emancipated slaves.

Every "black" in this country should seriously consider owning a gun. A giant step toward equality.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

History is a cruel mistress to Democrats.

Party of slavery and trying to keep black folks from having guns even though the 2nd Amendment specifically protects said right to bear arms.

  7. Bee Tagger   8 years ago

Hope Hicks has been named the new White House communications director, The Daily Caller is reporting. She was previously the administrartion's director of strategic communications.

On the one hand, good strategy to get promoted. On the other hand, not great job security.

A Ukrainian coder whose malware program was used to hack the Democratic National Committee is now working with the FBI.

On upgrading their kiddie porn servers.

    1. DJF   8 years ago

""""That a hacking operation that Washington is convinced was orchestrated by Moscow would obtain malware from a source in Ukraine""""

Wow, the NYT has a solid source, "Washington".

Did all of Washington meet in the Watergate to confirm this story?

    2. Griffin3   8 years ago

I have been coding since '81, and I find The Nations argument on the DNC leak being an inside leak vs a hack very convincing. Everyone who's ever copied bulk files knows that 22MB/s is the transfer rate for USB-2 drives (18MB/s for the cheap-ass ones), and no one ever has gotten that speed in a transatlantic connection, or even a cross-city connection here in the states. And to fake file access times would be a sign of a non-functional level of paranoia.

[According to Nation's source: "On the evening of July 5, 2016, 1,976 megabytes of data were downloaded from the DNC's server. The operation took 87 seconds. This yields a transfer rate of 22.7 megabytes per second."]

That's a 2GB thumb drive, and everyone here knows it. Now, whether a foreign actor blackmailed a local employee to copy he files for them, sure, that could happen. But a Romanian hacker pulling the files for his Russian paymasters? We wish the DNC (or anyone else) had that sort of bandwidth.

Of all the takes from yesterday, this seems like the strangest.

    1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

Trump's failure to call for white supremacists to be hung while pointing out that the Antifa assholes are just as bad and the neo-nazis is considered a lack of morality.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Trump trying to imply that there lefty neo-Nazi protestors and lefty SJWs at Charlottesville would have been taken even worse.

Cheetos pop-up restaurant is real ? and it's 'classy'

Local foodies flocked to Tribeca on Tuesday night to get a taste of orange-coated delicacies ? such as "Flamin' Hot Lim?n Chicken Tacos" and "Purrfectly Fried Green Tomatoes" ? as the Cheetos pop-up restaurant kicked off its three-day stay in the Big Apple.

"I'm going to go die in a food coma on my couch right now," said male model River Viiperi, just moments after devouring a Cheetos Sweetos Crusted Cheesecake, some Cheetos Sweetos Sweet and Salty Cookies ? and a stack of White Cheddar Cheetos and Cheetos Sweetos Apple Crepes.

Back in my day Chester Cheetah was not some lame, hipster foodie.

    1. Rhywun   8 years ago

OK I like a lot of garbage food but Cheetos are just disgusting.

Denton School District Removes Assistant Principal Who Wrote Political Pepe the Frog Kid's Book

Hauser's book featured themes and imagery consistent with the white nationalist movement. Pepe the Frog, Hauser's lead character, is a favored mascot of Donald Trump-supporting racists across social media. Many of Trump's supporters also refer to themselves as centipedes, stemming from a viral YouTube video that features an audio track from a nature video of centipedes laid over video of some of Trump's debate and speech highlights.

"I'm not concerned with using those characters because there is nothing wrong with those characters. They're not bad characters," he said. "I disagree with the [alt-right or white supremacist] label. I think that label was put on Pepe in an attempt to silence conservatives. They put that label on Pepe in an attempt to silence them when that's not what Pepe was about."

"The students, the community and the teachers are too important to me to subject them to all the negativity and disapproval resulting from this book."

This guy is clearly a Nazi. Burn him at the stake!

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

Couldn't they at least re-educate him first; I mean, there's a school handy right there.

      Centipedes dude.

    3. NEET   8 years ago

I think that label was put on Pepe in an attempt to silence conservatives.
No, fags and retards on /r9k/ deliberately associated that fucking frog with Nazis, piss, shit, etc. because they were angry at normalfags using him. Then /pol/ adopted him as their mascot and god. The more people hate the frog, the more those underage dicksuckers on /pol/ and alt-right cockmonglers get off.
The fact that I have to see this fucking frog everyday is sickening. What's worse is that they think it's funny still; hell, it wasn't even that funny when it began.
      Remove frogposters.

      1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

The fact that I have to see this fucking frog everyday is sickening.

Wait, wait... you have to see the frog?

        1. NEET   8 years ago

The website I spend most of my time lurking and posting on is also the same website that's (sadly) ground zero for young alt-right cocksuckers. And since the frog is part of their terribly unfunny culture, and they can't contain themselves to their own board nor read the rules, I have the unfortunate "pleasure" of seeing it daily. It's terrible, man.

          1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

So you unavoidably have to spend time on that website amongst the stupidity. Tough luck there, chap.

            1. NEET   8 years ago

You don't understand: once you use that website, you can't leave. You're there forever. The only person who ever escaped its hellish grasp was the owner. Plus, if you know where to go, you can escape the alt-right retards for the most part. It's a great feeling when you report the frog cockmonglers and see them get banned.

              1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

Uh huh. I suspect calling people fags is just the standard generic insult there as well. It's a tough row you've chosen to hoe, I don't envy your position.

                1. NEET   8 years ago

There's a lot of dumb shit, but there's a lot of fun shit too. And the community, in the good pockets of the website, is still decent compared to social media and reddit. You take the good with the bad.

                  1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

I'll bet it's just the best. Nevertheless, I'll not risk getting sucked in and being forced to spend the rest of my life dealing with fags and frog fuckers.

                    1. NEET   8 years ago

It's okay if you have interests like mine. I've learned a lot of stuff from lurking there that's helped my enjoy my hobbies more. But yeah, I would only recommend this experience to a few.

Sorry Moynihan, but HBO's VICE News Tonight is just NBC Nightly News with unabashed SJW's in charge. It's well produced (well, as well produced as something that devotes 3 minutes to complex topics) but is really nothing different than broadcast network news has been feeding news consumers for decades.

Does TV sex have to be safe?

The show, which focuses heavily on the main character Issa's sex and dating experiences, as well as those of her ex-boyfriend Lawrence, features several intimate scenes including sex between long-term partners and random hookups with neighbors. Viewers have praised the show for its realistic, honest depictions of sex that often encompass some degree of awkwardness. On August 14 ? the day after another sex-heavy, condom-light episode called "Hella LA" aired ? Issa Rae, the show's creator and star, responded to the conversation, tweeting "We tend to place condoms in the backgrounds of scenes or imply them. But we hear you guys and will do better next season," along with screenshots of scenes from the show in which condom wrappers are visible.

    Explaining White Nationalism's Anti-statist Bedfellows

The appeal of white nationalism to libertarian anti-statists should not be surprising. After all, nationalist and revanchist movements have historically represented powerful tools for mobilizing secession and other forms of political resistance to "the state." Their common cause is all the stronger in multicultural, liberal democracies where ethnic grievances can be called upon to portray "the state" less as a political compact between competing groups, and more as tyrannical sovereign infringing on some sub-group's right to self-determination.

    1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

The influential anarcho-capitalist and "enemy of the state" himself, Murray Rothbard, spelled out the paleo-libertarian strategy of "right-wing populism" with perfect candor ? more than two decades before the Trump presidential campaign executed it with astonishing success. By harnessing the white working class, Rothbard argued, a Pat Buchanan-style nominee could potentially "short-circuit the dominant media and intellectual elites," "marginalize Bush conservatives" and create an opening to steal the Republican nomination. Once in power, Rothbard's crypto-libertarian would then take to "dismantling the existing areas of State and elite rule" by slashing taxes, abolitioning welfare, reversing the civil rights act, "unleashing" local police on crooks and vagrants, and enacting an "America First" foreign policy. Sound familiar?

            2. Juice   8 years ago

Included? It was the central issue. It was the main topic of all the declarations listed there. I think there may be one exception. The Confederate constitution was just the US constitution with language added that explicitly protected the institution of slavery. The civil war was about secession versus preserving the union, but secession happened because of the issue of slavery.

        3. Number 2   8 years ago

Of course, lost in this debate is the question why there were Confederate statutes in a city that was supposedly on the Union side -- against its will, admittedly -- during the War of the Rebellion, a/k/a the Civil War.

America's attitude toward its Civil War is complex and multifaceted. I am old enough to remember when there was serious debate over whether it should be called the "Civil War" (preferred by Northerners) of the "War Between the States" (preferred by Southerners). The 1958 World Book Encyclopedia used the latter; the 1964 edition used the former. Much of our memory of that war is colored by the fact that after years of bloody conflict, and an even longer period of Reconstruction that in many ways was nastier and more divisive than the war itself, we had to rebuild a single nation without one section remaining bitter, alienated, and spoiling for a rematch. It's a shame that this subtlety is lost in what has become an identity politics issue and an idiotic reaction from white supremacists. If Ken Burns has released his Civil War documentary today, he would be vilified as a racist and defended by neo-Nazis.

I'm not sure that "libertarians" aren't either.

              2. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Right wing in America are conservatives. Change happens slowly and via large scale support.

People associate religion with being right wing but they are not necessarily on the same side and many religious people can be confused with socialist when they are just charitable . Even most of those people are not okay with government controlling the means of production.

Its hard to be conservative with small government and fiscal minimalism and be a socialist.

The left in America is described as revolutionary, socially liberal, and socialist.

We Libertarians are in the middle because we're socially liberal and conservative on issues like fiscal policy.

                1. Zeb   8 years ago

The southern Democrats who wanted to preserve slavery and later segregation were conservatives. They wanted to keep the racial status quo in place, which is a conservative impulse. So the neo-Confederates, at least, can reasonably be described as conservative. As for the "Nazis" (or whatever they were), I guess there is a debate to be had about how to classify them. They are distinct both from what is commonly identified today as "the left" and from American style Conservatism. It's kind of silly to argue about who they should be classified with. They are their own movement that you can't blame on today's left or right. Maybe we should actually describe different political ideologies instead of trying to fit them into neat categories like left/right.

      1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

All over - they are going to shut down the government, or something. The link implies 70s-style terroristic protests, but I assume it will be more like a few fat people standing in front of city halls and/or blocking roads.

    2. NEET   8 years ago

Do these fags have nothing better to do than protest? I don't even have a job at the moment, but I can't see myself wasting my time at these gay events. It has to get boring at some point, right?

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Tear gas, masks, police dressed as the SS, Confederate statues, etc.

        How can that be boring.

        1. NEET   8 years ago

          police dressed as the SS
If we're going to have power-abusing retards as our policemen, we should at least have them dress to impress. I wish I owned an SS uniform. Shit's my fetish.

          1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Use the Internet and you can dress up how you like.

      2. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

I don't even have a job at the moment

NO FUCKING WAY! How could that even be possible?

        1. NEET   8 years ago

How could that even be possible?
I was too cool for school, and now I'm too cool for work.

          1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

I just figured that you're stuck spending all your time destroying fags on twitterchan which leaves you no time for something so pedestrian as work.

            1. NEET   8 years ago

Like hell I do. I try to minimize my interaction with those retards. The only time I ever engage with them is when they sperg out in a peaceful thread, and then I report them. You don't and can't engage with those kinds of people. Most of them are underaged fools wanting to get in on the latest trends to look cool and edgy. That's all it is.

              1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

                Ah, my mistake.

          2. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

"Cool" is not the word that I would use.

  34. damikesc   8 years ago

I used to think that the people who said "there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats" were dumb.

Turns out I was. There isn't a bit of difference.

    1. Jerryskids   8 years ago

There's a world of difference between the GOP and the Democrats - one's stupid and the other's evil. The odd thing is that the evil party calls the stupid party evil and the stupid party calls the evil party stupid.

I didn't see this posted, but Oregon now has the "nation's most progressive reproductive health policy"

Called the Reproductive Health Equity Act, the measure requires health insurers to provide birth control and abortion without charging a co-pay. It also dedicates state funds to provide reproductive health care to noncitizens excluded from Medicaid.

    1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

I doubt it will last long enough to see how much spending increases.

  36. paranoid android   8 years ago

Jesus, what the fuck happened in that thread from last night< /a >"> text ? We have what appear to be actual out-and-proud Nazis fouling up the comment section (and I don't mean the usual race-baiting idiocy from our resident glue-huffers like Mikey). Loath as I am to say it, and certain that nothing will come of it, Reason should create and enforce a moderation policy. We can't have that shit here, it's a disgrace.

    1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

You effed up the link, cuck.

Also, overreacting to the mentally challenged and trolls (but I repeat myself - HA!) is never good.

      1. paranoid android   8 years ago

I don't think it's overreacting to kick off actual Nazis. Reason is under no obligation to provide a platform to such people.

        1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

True, but principles (if they still exist).

        2. NEET   8 years ago

I agree, but on the other hand the thread became arousing once I started imagining that guy to be some cute blue-eyed, blonde-haired (2D) girl shitposting.

Who is this loveconstitution cousinfucker? What a goddam riot.

    1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

Apparently the Internet is all just fags and cousinfuckers now. Shame, it really looked like it had potential.

      1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Will no one think of the cucks?

    2. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

Your obsession with fucking your cousins continues apace, it seems.

    3. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Evidently, I really get under lefty skins.

You are so silly Tony. Like a fruit bouquet. Farm to butt.
