Watch a Liberal Bro Student Calmly Destroy the Berkeley College Republicans' Property

"You just vandalized our property." "Yeah, I just did." A chill act of vandalism.

SmashScreenshot via Berkeley CRsA member of the University of California-Berkeley College Republicans caught a young man in the act of destroying the group's large wooden sign on campus.

The perpetrator is presumed to be a student—a witness described him as such.

The CR began recording the incident, which transpired at Sproul Plaza on Tuesday. This did not deter the perpetrator, who continued smashing the sign into smaller pieces.

"You just vandalized our property," said the person recording the video.

"Yeah," replied the perpetrator. "I did."

You can watch the video below: it's one of the more chill acts of illiberalism I've ever seen. The perpetrator even asked the CR if he knows whether the sign should be composted, or placed in the trash.

"I believe that would be compost," the CR replied, because this is Berkeley, after all.

At one point, a female student in league with the sign-destroyer asks the CR to stop recording the destruction of his group's property. She asserted that he had no legal right to record them without permission. That's funny for two reasons: one, it's wrong—there's no expectation of privacy in a public place—and two, the vandals were already breaking the law, anyway.

The altercation likely represents continuing fallout from the CR's decision to bring Milo Yiannopoulos to campus last month. Anti-fascist protesters—most of whom were not students—crashed the event, smashed windows, and started fires, ultimately preventing Yiannopoulos from speaking.

Organized "black bloc" rioters were responsible for shutting down Yiannopoulos. But illiberal leftist college students often try to silence their perceived opponents as well. An onlooker defended the student's actions, claiming that he was merely exercising his own "free speech" rights. This is a perversion of the concept: free speech does not and cannot include the right to deny someone equal use of a public space, or shout them down at a forum, or destroy their belongings.

Orwell's famous allegory fits a little too neatly here: If you want to a vision of the present, imagine a college Crossfit bro calmly stomping on a conservative's sign, forever. (Or just watch the video.)

    the left has been actively engaging violence against those who they disagree with for some time now. they are just using Milo as an excuse to be open about their fascist leanings.

  • WakaWaka||

    It's the last gasps of a dying ideology. They're in retreat throughout the West so they're resorting to violence. What is amazing is how most of the media excuses away their violence. The real illiberals among us

  • chemjeff||

    What is the "dying ideology" part? Using the state to enforce its preferences upon everyone? I would not call that a "dying ideology". In fact I'd say it's so successful that now both the left and the right have adopted it.

  • WakaWaka||

    Ummm...when right-of-center college students begin riots on college campuses I'll believe your concept of 'using the state to enforce preferences'. And that will be all over the news and there definitely won't be any lies about how 'that's not students, that's outside agitators'.

    In the meantime, progressivism is a dying ideology. The whole identity politics, mixed with illiberalism is in retreat throughout the West.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    You know the little progressive darlings are a bit bratty but their destructive juvenile behavior will be tolerated because, you know, they really are on the right side of history. And they truly mean well....it's a feeling thing conservatives and libertarians just don't get anyway.

  • Rhywun||

    progressivism is a dying ideology

    It may have upswings and downswings but no way is it "dying".

  • ||

    It may have upswings and downswings but no way is it "dying".

    Right, we all still chip in for free birth control via penaltaxing and dronessassination is a thing but kids on college campuses will may be free to speak their minds (on some things) again.

    I believe the term of art we use around here is one-way ratchet.

  • Calidissident||

    Yeah, no major established ideology is in danger of dying any time soon. Brexit and Trump (or even the success of the GOP overall) don't mean progressivism is on the verge of death.

  • retiredfire||

    Vote counts do.

    HiLIARy 2016 65.8M votes, 48.0% of voters, 20% of population.

    Seeing a trend, here?

  • Snort||

    Trump 2016 62.9M votes, 46.1% of voters, 19% of population.

  • chemjeff||

    The whole identity politics, mixed with illiberalism is in retreat throughout the West.

    Umm, what? Identity politics has proven so successful that there is now an entire subculture on the right devoted to white identity politics. And yes the alt-right has some very illiberal ideas as well.

  • chemjeff||

    You're right, there aren't many conservatives starting riots on college campuses.

    But before progressives were destroying the career and reputation of Brendan Eich for donating to a wrongthink cause, conservatives were destroying the careers and reputations of the Dixie Chicks for making wrongthink comments. The Social Justice Warrioring goes both ways you know and it doesn't look like it is going to end anytime soon.

  • John||

    and reputations of the Dixie Chicks for making wrongthink comments.

    Saying bad things about someone and not buying their records is totally the same thing as engaging in violence.

    God you are a fucking useless moron.

  • chemjeff||

    You idiot, I didn't mention riots, I mentioned what the SJW's did to Brendan Eich. There was no violence against him but he was still drummed out of his job. How precisely is it different w.r.t. Eich and Dixie Chicks?

  • Careless||

    How precisely is it different w.r.t. Eich and Dixie Chicks?

    Well, for one, I could go see a Dixie Chicks concert in a few weeks if I wanted to, while Eich will never again have anything to do with FF. So how precisely is it the same, or even similar?

  • Macy's Window||

    Well, for one thing, Brendan Eich made a private campaign contribution. He didn't make his views on SSM a focus of his business. He just expressed his views as an American.

    The Dixie Chicks didn't just take a political stand for or against SSM or higher/lower taxes or whatever, they used their public platform to criticize, while they were on foreign soil, the sitting US President about a war that the US was engaged in.

    Big differences.

  • Snort||

    Wait! Where did respecting freedom of speech go? I missed it! I only looked away for a second. I swear!

  • SezWhom||

    The Dixie Chicks are not a valid comparison. People decided they didn't want to get preached to at a Dixie Chicks concert, so they stopped going. Is there some sort of rationale the justifies the expectation that people go in spite of their desire not to? On the other hand, disrupting college campuses and intimidating people from seeing speakers of their choice is off-the-charts repressive. This, from the celebrate diversity crowd.

  • Eric||

    Violence, coercion, intimidation, etc is not isolated to the left nor right. I'm so sick of partisans on either side of the left/right debate right now with their near sighted, history forgetting, team-fellating bullshit. Libertarians should not align with either side, or they'll rightly be called out as hypocrites when that side goes too far.

  • Delius||

    Exactly. The Left's violence may be more publicly visible, but the Right's is more hypocritical for putting on a public face of virtue and then attacking from under cover -- whether that cover is an isolated spot far from prying eyes, or the dark of night, or a white hood.

  • retiredfire||

    Tinfoil hat on a little too tight?

    P.S. White hoods were worn by demoncraps in the South.

  • Diane Merriam||

    The right and the left are just two sides of the same coin ... authoritarian control. The only difference is in exactly what parts of people's lives they want control of and what they'll allow people to decide for themselves on.

  • Snort||

    Sounds good to me. Both ends of the spectrum want power. Both ends want to make everyone else look like them, even if it kills everyone NOT like them.

  • Delius||

    There really needs to be a moratorium on using "Uh" or "Um" at the beginning of a post to indicate that you think the person you are replying to has said something shockingly dumb. Don't be so fucking passive aggressive.

    I actually loved the meta-analysis by Robby Soave;

    That's funny for two reasons: one, it's wrong—there's no expectation of privacy in a public place—and two, the vandals were already breaking the law, anyway.

    Of all the Reason writers, Robby, leaves the ultimate implication of the two reasons to stop filming (and the rather overt indication of intent) up to the reader to infer. So long as nobody says, "Turn the camera off so I can kick your ass." it doesn't count as bullying.

  • Get To Da Chippah||

    "He doesn't want to be filmed."

    "Well, I didn't want my sign destroyed."

    HE SAID CROSSFIT BRO. IT'S NOT HIS FAULT IF YOU DIDN'T READ THAT AS "SCRAWNY FUCK"

    And now "scrawny fuck" is going to excite you, isn't it?

  • Michael Eiseman||

    As a side note, the founder of Crossfit, Greg Glassman, is hardcore Libertarian and would not approve of the actions of that ignorant young liberal fascist actions. I don't know if they still do it but in the past they've posted articles periodically on their Facebook page with a libertarian theme and it drives some of the subscribers crazy.

  • WakaWaka||

    "Anti-fascist protesters—most of whom were not students—crashed the event, smashes windows, and started fires, ultimately preventing Yiannopoulos from speaking."

    You have no way of knowing that 'most were not students'. Unless your Robert Reich now and it was just a 'false flag' that seems to occur over and over and over again throughout the country. Damn that huge vast right-wing conspiracy.

    And judging by how illiberal your Leftist pals are, I would say it is a good bet that they were definitely part of the anti-fascists (who behave an awful lot like fascists) who rioted and committed violence against attendees.

  • Ron||

    A few professors and students have already admitted to being a part of the black ninja mob and they aren't anti fascist they are the fascist

  • WakaWaka||

    Robby doesn't seem to take them at their word.

  • Calidissident||

    I don't see how that's true. It's simultaneously possible for some students and professors to have been involved, and for most of the "ninjas" to have been non-students.

    Ron, do you have a link regarding professors admitting to that? I've read about one university employee (I don't know if he's a professor or not) who was caught in pictures involved, but he doesn't seem to have admitted to it and I couldn't find any other story about a Berkeley professor admitting involvement. I did find some disgusting quotes from professors justifying it, but none admitting to involvement.

  • Calidissident||

    I don't find it difficult to believe most of the black bloc types at the Milo event were not students. Not because of any false flag right-wing conspiracies, but because big left-leaning urban areas tend to have groups of self-styled "anti-fascist" activists who are probably more likely to be loser NEETs or angsty grads than current college students. They love (especially recently) rioting at events like these. One such group even admitted they were involved. That doesn't mean there weren't some students involved in the rioting, and even the crowd that wasn't breaking shit was trying to prevent him from speaking, so I don't think they're off the hook by any means. I remember reading that one guy was even a university employee.

  • WakaWaka||

    Ok. Prove to me they weren't students.

    You can't. So then why repeat that?

    You have professors and students that admitted that they were with those fascists, so why is this lie repeated?

  • Calidissident||

    The number of people in (not student specific) activist groups who've admitted to involvement is a lot more than the number of students who've admitted involvement, so it's not an unreasonable assumption. You're probably right it can't be conclusively proved until the FBI announces something (supposedly they're investigating the identities of the rioters). Either way, Berkeley students looked bad, and the rioters were clearly leftists regardless of whether or not they were students.

  • John||

    I am sure a lot of them were not students. But what makes you think none of them were students?

    Moreover, what difference does it make if they were not students? The campus police still stood down and let them attack Milo supporters with impunity. I don't see how them not being students makes that fact any less of an indictment of the campus police or the University as a whole.

    What is your point here? That it is okay for the UC campus to allow terrorists to attack attendees at a peaceful speaking event as long as the attackers are not students?

  • Calidissident||

    I didn't say none of them were students. Can you read?

    I actually agree with your second paragraph, my comment was a reply to WakaWaka who chose to focus on whether or not the rioters were students.

    You know damn well that's not what I was saying. Good lord John.

  • John||

    I did not think you did. That is why I phrased it as a question. And I am sure it was a mix of students and non students. We will never know the ratio because the police let them get away with it.

  • Calidissident||

    Are you talking about the claim about none of them being students, or the last sentence about it being ok if they're not students?

    Your question about the students makes it clear that you think I was saying none of them were students. When you say "what makes you think X" you are saying that the person believes X to be true, and are asking them why they believe that.

    I agree we probably won't know the exact ration unless the FBI investigation somehow has a lot of success. My guess would be mostly radical left-wing groups from around the Bay Area (lord knows they aren't in short supply there) with some students mixed in. Maybe even some professors.

  • John||

    I misunderstood you and thought you meant none of them were students. My mistake.

  • Azathoth!!||

    They were ALL: students you fucking moron.

    The "groups of self-styled "anti-fascist" activists" in "big left-leaning urban areas" are nearly always affiliated with the local college systems.

    These are not 'spontaneous workers collectives rising up against the bourgeoisie'--they're asshole student groups playing or re-playing their 'protest years'. groups thoroughly indoctrinated by leftist professors and administrations at our colleges.

    Every word you said was some bogus rationalization to try to make 'most of the black bloc types at the Milo event were not students" true.

    It isn't.

  • Calidissident||

    Calm down there tiger.

    As you even acknowledge with the "re-playing their protest years" a lot of these people are former students who have never grown up. I'm not saying activists have no relation to college campuses, I'm saying that a lot of the rioter types aren't necessarily in school at the moment. A lot of them are losers who either didn't graduate or failed in the real world. Also, it does depend on whether by "student" we mean any college student or Berkeley students specifically. I'm sure there were students from other campuses involved in the riots.

  • Azathoth!!||

    Do you not get that this entire thing is a rationalization--

    I'm saying that a lot of the rioter types aren't necessarily in school at the moment. A lot of them are losers who either didn't graduate or failed in the real world. Also, it does depend on whether by "student" we mean any college student or Berkeley students specifically. I'm sure there were students from other campuses involved in the riots.

    They ARE students or former students(washout or alumni) or staff--or students called in from other schools by the students involved.

    These are all students--all products or employees of academia. There were no 'outside' agitators because this whole movement is as incestuous as a hillbilly baby shower.

    It is one giant echo chamber in which they all sit eternally exhorting each other to greater depths of 'revolutionary' action.

  • ThomasD||

    It does not matter that "all" were not students. That's a red herring intended to distract from the real issue..

    There were students - and faculty - present and participating in a violent oppressive mob action. None of whom have seriously disavowed it, or taken any positive steps to see that any criminals have been identified and prosecuted.

    It's enough to tar all of them, and also the University - who stood by and watched it all happen without doing anything to prevent or stop it.

  • Bubba Jones||

    Um, it's Berkeley.

    Lots of "once and future" students in that ecosystem.

  • Rich||

    Robby, please let us know how this plays out.

  • Rhywun||

    imagine a college Crossfit bro calmly stomping on a conservative's sign, forever

    Hawt.

  • WakaWaka||

  • Free Society||

    I thought Robby would have thought this was awesome. He's just bashing some fash, jeese.

  • Trumptard||

    Here is a real solution: a little ass-kicking will go a long way. Someone destroys your sign, kick his ass. How do you think the founding fathers would have handled it?

  • John||

    If they had kicked his ass, the campus police would have arrested them and the Berkeley DA would have thrown the book at them. The Progtard commits a crime in full view and on camera and nothing will happen to him.

    This is what the rest of the world calls state-sanctioned political violence. And that is what is going on in places like Berkeley. And no one seems to care or be doing anything about it. I believe in self-defense and the necessity of using violence to defend yourself as much as the next person. Self-defense does you no good if the police will arrest you for doing it while allowing others to use violence against you with impunity. What is going on here is a grave threat to our freedom.

  • Tak Kak||

    Anarcho-Tyranny

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    I do not believe opening a literal can of whup ass [while many of us would have enjoyed that video] would pass muster; his destroying property would be a cause to call campus police, not to kick his ass as there was no threat toward the CR or anyone else as far as I can see. He was being a property destroying asshole, and like the rest of his ilk is perfectly justified in his thinking that his moral outrage is reason enough. He should have been arrested and charged, but kicking his ass would have accomplished nothing but sympathy for him [oh the oppression!] and a shit load of legal problems for the ass kicker.

  • John||

    If you are destroying my property, I have a right to intervene and stop you. If you then attack me when I intervene, I have a right to defense myself. So, in this case, they could not have sucker punched the guy or shot him. But they could have stepped in and tried to stop him and when he responded kicked the living shit out of him within reason.

    And unless this guy is arrested and charged with a crime, this is state sanctioned violence. Vandalism is a form of violence. It is just not violence against a person.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    I believe if you are not threatened and have to opportunity to call the cops, engaging in actions that may predictably serve to escalate the matter to violence could pose problems. In this case the "property" is a plywood sign; I get the principle and agree that the dude is a bitch, but still the CR should have put the burden on the UCB cops and imposed some actual consequences on the guy. Or left them with shit on the faces for not doing their job.

    And you know full well that beating the shit out of him [as much as he may deserve it] would only garner sympathy from the West/East Coast crowds.

  • John||

    I am speaking more theoretically. In this circumstance, watching and filming was their only real option. No matter what the law or how reasonable their actions, the campus cops would have gone after them had they done something.

  • Some Engineer||

    Calmly removing your pepper spray from your pocket and calmly pepper spraying the berkley bro would be appropriate.

  • ThomasD||

    On a purely practical level I suspect that in California attempting to protect you property probably does rise to the level of "engaging in actions that may predictably serve to escalate the matter to violence." In the saner parts of the country not so much.

    Of course, there are Reason authors who say the act of inviting someone to speak at you University likewise may predictably serve to escalate the matter to violence.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    I do not believe opening a literal can of whup ass [while many of us would have enjoyed that video] would pass muster; his destroying property would be a cause to call campus police, not to kick his ass as there was no threat toward the CR or anyone else as far as I can see. Even the SF Bay Area doesn't take that place seriously.

    This is the city that banned ATM fees, and then had to rescind it when the banks simply stopped letting non-customer use the ATMs. Put a real hurt on all the campus credit union customers when they couldn't get money from a Wells Fargo ATM.

  • John||

    Last I looked, Berkeley was still part of the US. I am not down with Progs creating their own no-go zones. Fuck them. Berkeley needs to be squashed.

  • Trumptard||

    Some of these guys just need a beating. They are cowards. Challenge them. Also, if counter-protestors showed up and took on some these thugs, both sides would get it. I could live with that. Imagine some left-wing turd throws a garbage can through a store window, and then someone tackles him. Are we really afraid of the consequences of such a confrontation? If we are, we are in trouble. Intimidation goes a long way to changing the world.

    http://theralphretort.com/uc-b.....se-209017/

  • John||

    They had every right to use reasonable physical force to stop him from destroying their property. They could have stood in his way or tried to pull his arm back. Then if he responded to that force, their right to self-defense would kick in and they could have beaten his ass within reason.

  • Raston Bot||

    I'm coming around to respecting their restraint as a prudent decision. It's probably impossible to know how the prosecutor would exercise discretion in this scenario at a place like Berkeley were this to become violent.

  • John||

  • John||

    This pisses me off, but I take solace in knowing this isn't going to end well for these assholes. At some point, they will be dumb enough to venture outside of Berkeley and pull this shit. They are nothing but spoiled children and the university is doing them no favors enabling this behavior. When, and it will be when, they do it outside of the liberal hive, they will either get their asses kicked and or end up in jail facing felony charges and serious jail time like the rioters at the Inauguration are. This dumb ass is going to end up in the hospital, the morgue or prison. He is just too stupid to understand that. But he will eventually.

  • Juice||

    This pisses me off

    Then they win.

  • John||

    I disagree. They do this because they think they can intimidate people into shutting up. They don't win by me and others being pissed off. They win by me and others saying nothing and letting it stand and everyone knowing that facing the threat of violence is the price that must be paid to stand up to them.

    No, they loose if you are pissed off. They lose if you stand up to them and make it clear that these tactics don't work and will not be tolerated.

  • Eric||

    They win when that little artery bursts in your brain because you were baited into taking something so stupid and silly so seriously.

  • John||

    This is just silly? Then I guess you won't mind my coming over and breaking your car windows or taking a piss on your lawn then. Hey if vandalism is just silly, what is the big deal?

    And when the police don't prosecute me for it and tell you to fuck off when you call them, that will be just silly too.

    Go fuck yourself and apologize for fascists somewhere else, dickhead.

    Um, role, not roll. Apologies, I'm retired and it's too damn early in the day to use my words correctly.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    I sure hope you are on Pacific Time!

    Regardless I envy you.

  • Number 2||

    I wonder if Berkeley will have the same problems identifying these perpetrators that it claimed to have finding the Milo event perpetrators.

  • OldMexican Blankety Blank||

    And that, you could say, is why El Trumpo won the presidency.

    Dear Marxian thugs: you're not helping.

  • John||

    NO they are not. But they are retarded. So, good luck in convincing them to change.

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

    But do the retarded own the night, or do they just want cake?

  • Quo Usque Tandem||

  • Not a True MJG||

    Dude's gonna be drownin' in puss. So brave.

  • Tony||

    This guy personally represents a trend in liberal politics. All those vandalisms of Jewish cemeteries since Trump took office--random acts by individuals.

  • #NotMyReason (Krabappel)||

    Have they caught any of them? Let me know when we actually have a suspect and can prove they are part of the alt-right.

  • Tony||

    The far right is always worse and more violent than the far left in this country, and they never really stop. If the left did what the right does on a regular basis (with occasional larger flare-ups as with the Jewish cemetery thing, burning black churches, and, say, the OKC bombing), the country would be on total lockdown. But somehow we're actually kind of OK with actual terrorist violence as long as good Christians are doing it.

  • John||

    The far right is always worse and more violent than the far left in this country,

    Yeah Tony. It was the far right who beat up all of those people in Berkeley last month. And it was the far right who were attacking people and burning cars at the Inauguration. And it was a bunch of Republicans who did this

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03......html?_r=0

    And everyone knows that it is the Right who routinely aligns itself with radical Muslims.

    http://nypost.com/2017/02/25/t.....terrorist/

    You called it Tony.

  • Get To Da Chippah||

    Remember all those Occupy Wall Street demonstrations with all the vandalism and shitting on cars and property destruction?

    Me neither.

  • Tony||

    Remember the destruction of an entire building and 168 lives within it? Are you idiots trying not to get my point or what?

  • Azathoth!!||

    Wait--do you think Timothy McVeigh was 'far right'?

  • Tony||

    His primary motivation was a grievance against the federal government.

  • Rebel Scum||

    The far right is always worse and more violent than the far left in this country, and they never really stop.

    Interesting position considering it is lefties that believe "the ends justify the means" and "you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet". Also, of all the mass-shooters I can think of, the only ones that had been known to be politically expressive and/or left manifestos have all been self-described socialists.

  • John Titor||

    The far right is always worse and more violent than the far left in this country, and they never really stop.If the left did what the right does on a regular basis...the country would be on total lockdown.

    This is one of the more stupid things you've said Tony, and the only thing it really does is provide evidence of how historically illiterate you are. A general knowledge of terrorist action in the 1970s alone completely negates your argument in its entirety.

  • John C. Randolph||

    The far right is always worse and more violent than the far left in this country,

    Tell it to Korematsu, you mendacious twat.

    -jcr

  • RockLibertyWarrior||

    Tony spoken like a little, delusional, control freak, crybaby bitch that you are and as usual you have no facts to back up your utterly ridiculous and stupid claims. Do us a favor and go die in a gutter somewhere, shit for brains.

  • John||

    Come on. The Republicans nearly elected a member of the most notorious anti-Semitic religious groups in America its chairman last week. Who else could it be? it has to be the evil Republicans.

  • mpercy||

    A) Robert Byrd has been dead for about 7 years.
    B) Robert Byrd was a Democrat.

    So I'm pretty sure he was not about to be elected as the GOP Chair.

  • Macy's Window||

    "So I'm pretty sure he was not about to be elected as the GOP Chair."

    I dunno. I heard on MSNBC that Byrd was a Republican.

  • Diane Merriam||

    Nope. Easy enough to verify via Google. Byrd was a lifelong Democrat.

  • John||

    yeah Tony. they are all Trump supporters. We elected a President whose daughter is married to an orthodox Jew and who is the most vocally pro-Isreal President since Bush II or maybe ever. Clearly, that kind of guy is inspiring anti-Semitic violence.

    And who else could it be? Other than Trump supporters, there are not any other groups who are known to hate Jews in this country. Right?

    Are you sure it is must to be Trump supporters doing that? You can't think of anyone else?

  • Tony||

    I think bigots of all stripes are empowered by the election of Trump. It's not like it's a secret that one of his main advisers is a white supremacist and that he himself has expressed white supremacist sentiments on multiple occasions. But you are right, he does have a Jewish friend.

  • John||

    Yeah Tony, Tump got elected and Muslims suddenly developed this hatred for Jews.

    More than anything Tony, you are a comedy act. A sad comedy act but a comedy act none the less.

    Meanwhile, Jewish cemeteries have been being desecrated for years. This is nothing new or even an increase over what was already happening.

    http://www.algemeiner.com/2017.....isemitism/

    You should stop believing so much FAKE NEWS.

  • Macy's Window||

    Tony: " But you are right, he does have a Jewish friend."

    Yes, so many white supremacists have so many Jewish friends. The local Nazis hang out down by the Synagogue hoping to pal around with the rabbi.

    In Trump's case, not only does he have at least one Jewish friend, his son-in-law, daughter and grandchildren are Jewish.

    But I'm sure that you're right that all bigots are empowered by Trump. You have the perfect ideology: Whatever happens -- whoever does what to whom -- it is Trump's fault!

    You get bonus points for the convenience of your thinking.

  • #NotMyReason (Krabappel)||

    In a just world, this fucker would get expelled/suspended from Berkeley.

    Sorry bro, you just lost access to the college workout facilities.

  • DiegoF||

    Dudes who wear weight gloves anywhere outside a weight room, everyone from steroid beasts to wimpy hipsters, are douchebags. (They don't serve much of a purpose inside of one either, but I'll let that slide on a lesser charge of simply being silly.)

  • ||

    imagine a college Crossfit bro calmly stomping on a conservative's sign, forever

    You mean this isn't just part of his WOD? That tomorrow he won't be stomping on liberal's signs and random sandwich boards the day after? The horror of specialization! The horror.

  • creech||

    Put new signs out but make sure you have more than one CR there. One needs to be filming any encounters.
    Then grab the signs away from the vandal and see what happens. Fifty years ago, the CRs would have gotten their buddies from the football team and kicked the crap out of any long haired hippies that tried this stuff.

  • IceTrey||

    They deserved to have their sign destroyed for vertical recording.

  • DiegoF||

    False. They deserved a swift sucker punch in the fucking face. Talk about social justice.

  • ||

    Admission of guilt on camera !

  • plumbertom||

    Unless Berkeley's policy is to promote and support destruction of property, that vandal should be identified and expelled.

  • Caradoc||

    I wonder if his gloves match his purse.

    And a guy with arms that small should be trying to wear that shirt.

  • Caradoc||

    I wonder if his gloves match his purse.

    And a guy with arms that small should be trying to wear that shirt.

  • Marshal||

    Anti-fascist protesters—most of whom were not students—crashed the event, smashed windows, and started fires, ultimately preventing Yiannopoulos from speaking.

  • Marshal||

    Previously cut off:

    How did Robby conclude unknown people - many in masks - weren't students?

    It seems Robby's primary goal is signaling to left wing gatekeepers at other journalism outlets he can be trusted to protect liberals.

  • Choadintheroad||

    He said they weren't students, not that they weren't liberals, you fucking idiot. THEY WERE ANTI-FASCISTS (I.E. LIBERALS)

    You fucking stupid fucking cunt, please die.

  • Chip Your Pets||

    They also weren't anti-fascist.

  • Chip Your Pets||

    They also weren't anti-fascist.

  • R Daneel||

    Time to turn some liberals into compost.

  • Texas Aggie||

    It would interesting to see how this sort of thing would be handled at Texas A&M. I guaranty the police would stop it and I guaranty students would also stop it.

  • Chili Dogg||

    Is there nobody with enough balls around to go up and try to take the sign back from this a-hole? Grab it and start pulling it away from him, let him throw the first punch, then you have him on video vandalizing and starting a fight. Press charges and try to get him jail time. The courts out there would probably just give him a short probation at best, but it would be worth a try. An alternative is to have 3 or 4 guys go up to him and tell him to stop, then see what he does. If he doesn't stop, stop him.

  • Choadintheroad||

    Nope, conservatives in 2017 are now effete pussies who just complain, file suits and press charges. Welcome to Trump's GOP.

  • msouth||

    Hey is there a link where we can fund twice as many new signs for them? And twice as many again when they destroy those?

  • John C. Randolph||

    This is what a snotty little cunt looks like.

    -jcr

  • Tionico||

    Identufy and press charges, also sue in small claims court for the damage to the personal property.

    These clowns wanna play tough guy, let's play tough guy.

  • DiegoF||

    That is not really "tough guy" (see my comment below), but it is "adult guy." They should most certainly pursue compensation and punishment in the appropriate venue.

  • DiegoF||

    Alright, as an actual bro I take great objection to Robby's bro taxonomy. I thought he was a Midwest preppy effete bro, but now I doubt his credentials.
    .
    This bro has never done CrossFit in his life. Those motherfuckers look ropey, like runners who lift. This guy is pretty much the opposite--more of that high school athlete gone to seed thing going on.
    .
    More importantly, this scene illustrates an underappreciated aspect of modern prog-bro masculinity. You might figure the presence of the camera and the reasonable conservative makes him look like an idiot, but au contraire, he does not want to impress you. Their presence is actually what enables his behavior. Their presence signals to him that violence is off the table, that his adversary is interested in looking the rational man--thus our friend here, in turn, gets to puff out his bitch tits and play the role of virile man of action, knowing that there is no danger to himself.
    .
    He is, after all, a man, and is slightly uncomfortable with the rather emasculating nature of the role he has chosen for himself. Breitbarters think they're insulting Mr. Honors Gender-Ethnic-and-Environmental-Studies here by calling him a "thug"? They're giving him exactly the status he wants. And now he can say he roughed up some "fascists" with those badass black gloves. Just like those working-class street brawlers in 20s Italy! Same stakes, same war, bra.

    CA Penal Code 422.6
    (a) No person, whether or not acting under color of law, shall by force or threat of force, willfully injure, intimidate, interfere with, oppress, or threaten any other person in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him or her by the Constitution or laws of this state or by the Constitution or laws of the United States in whole or in part because of one or more of the actual or perceived characteristics of the victim listed in subdivision (a) of Section 422.55.
    (b) No person, whether or not acting under color of law, shall knowingly deface, damage, or destroy the real or personal property of any other person for the purpose of intimidating or interfering with the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to the other person by the Constitution or laws of this state or by the Constitution or laws of the United States, in whole or in part because of one or more of the actual or perceived characteristics of the victim listed in subdivision (a) of Section 422.55.

  • Longtobefree||

    Interesting; what's your point? This was Berkeley, where laws do not apply unless the administration wants them to.

  • Jaws||

    Repeatedly asking "do you want to do something" about it while pushing up into the cameraman's face is a classic example of "fighting words," that is, challenging to fight. So we have PC594 vandalism, PC240,assault, PC 415 Challenging to fight, and PC422.6 Depriving 1st amendment rights through force, threats and vandalism.

    This is a big deal. Aiders and abettors included as principals.

  • Jaws||

    Probably not 422.6 because the deprivation of rights must be motivated by animus against a classic immutable characteristic. But 240, 242, 415 and 594? Definitely.

  • Dread Pirate Roberts||

    I used to live in the People's Republic of Berkeley. In a sane world, the city would have a lot going for it, but it's ruined by idiots and the idiot politicians they vote for. Fuck Berkeley in the fucking neck. I vowed a long time ago never to set foot there again.

  • Real Books||

    Nobody has been able to ID this guy yet?

  • pabloat8000||

    The smart conservative people knew they dare not respond or intervene because the "police" would have victimized them a second time at the behest of the liberal goons who run Berkeley.

  • Longtobefree||

    "Anti-fascist protesters—most of whom were not students—crashed the event, smashed windows, and started fires, ultimately preventing Yiannopoulos from speaking."
    1. Not protesters, rioters
    2. Cite a source for "not students"; were they arrested and identified?

  • Colossal Douchebag||

    There's just never a balloon full of urine handy when you need one.

  • RockLibertyWarrior||

    If I caught these motherfucking, shit stain, cry baby, fascist little punks destroying my property, I'd "kindly" and "calmly" curb stomp the shit out of them. Of course they have no respect for anything but once they start getting their wimpy, millennial asses kicked they cry out for the police whom their supposed to hate. "Reason" wonders why Trump won, its little wastes of space like these types that helped Trump win, one of the main reasons why I voted for him is because I straight up hate these types and it was like thumb in their eye, I voted purely out of spite for Trump. Its not Trump destroying this country, its people like these types that are.

  • Choadintheroad||

    Bullshit, keyboard warrior. You'd offer to blow them while they were doing it.

  • RockLibertyWarrior||

    I hope somebody forwarded this to the police and the College Republicans press charges. Its time to fight dirty, us libertarians and conservatives have been too nice for too long. Time to get mean.

  • Choadintheroad||

    Fighting dirty is a punch in the face. What you describe is acting like a total pussy assed cunt nugget.

  • Jeep's Blues||

    I realize this is a blog and Robby Soave is not a proper journalist but there was no mention in the article of what the destroyed sign said? Did I miss it?

    And here's some follow up:

    http://www.sfgate.com/crime/ar.....972821.php

    An arrest and misdemeanor vandalism charge was filed against another vandal but it seems to be a separate incident from the man seen in the video breaking up the wooden sign. To my knowledge there has been no published arrest or charge of that man yet.

    A Facebook post from the arrested, charged and released vandal read:

    "UCPD used an hour of their resources to detain me for an hour over a Trump placard. I almost became a hashtag because UC Berkeley protects racist organizations."

    It seems he felt justified to vandalize the Trump placard.

  • Choadintheroad||

    Christ, when did the right become such pussies?
