Russian Ambassador to Turkey Assassinated, Truck Plows Into Christmas Market in Berlin, Electoral Voting Going as Expected, P.M. Links

  Russia's ambassador to Turkey was assassinated today by a man who shouted "God is great!" in Arabic and yelled for people not to forget Aleppo and Syria. He was then killed in a shootout.

• A truck drove into a crowd of people at a Christmas market in Berlin, killing at least nine.
• North Carolina legislators may rescind HB2, the now-infamous law that requires transgender people to use bathrooms and other public facilities in schools and government buildings that match the sex listed on their birth certificates. This would be a compromise resulting from Charlotte agreeing to abandon its new city ordinance that mandated accommodation in government and private facilities.
• A New Mexico lawyer's attempt to force Senate to consider and vote on whether to confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court has been rejected.
• President Barack Obama wants President-Elect Donald Trump to be careful about using his executive power in today's "Do as I say, not as a I do" news.
• Electors have started casting their votes and thus far there do not seem to be any shocking twists, meaning that Trump will probably win.
• There's a battle brewing in New Jersey over who gets the money for government-mandated posting of legal advertisements. Gov. Chris Christie is pushing a bill that will let governments post the ads themselves, taking the money away from local newspapers. (As somebody who survived the recession as the editor of a small newspaper, this will kill several publications off if it passes. It doesn't mean the proposal is right or wrong, just that the monopoly for legal ads kept many local newspapers afloat when real estate and auto ads disappeared.)
