About 20 women gathered in a public square in Tehran to ask for equal divorce and custody rights and an end to polygamy. They were immediately set upon by a larger number of police officers who beat them. The women gathered again on the other side of the street and police used pepper spray on them and on onlookers who shouted out criticism of the police.
