'Photos of world landmarks lit up in solidarity with France'
From Slate; I found it quite moving. I don't have much else to say about the horror in Paris, but I thought I'd pass this along.
By the way, it's not lost on me that many more people die in other places (Syria, the Central African Republic, and so many more) and we don't react the same. This may well be a flaw in our empathy; surely the lives of Frenchmen are no more valuable than the lives of Central Africans.
But the French have been our close friends and allies since 1778, whatever gripes we might periodically have with each other (as friends sometimes do). Today, we mourn friends, and rage at the attack on our friends.
