Riot Breaks Out in Huntington Beach After US Open of Surfing Ends

Following the close of the Van's U.S. Open of Surfing Sunday evening in Huntington Beach, large crowds in the area turned violent, starting fights and vandalizing Main Street.

Huntington Beach Police Department officers responded to Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway at about 7 p.m. when a large fight broke out, according to City News Service. Officers attempted to break up the brawl, but the crowd moved into the downtown area. Fights continued, and people began vandalizing the area. People in the mob also reportedly thew bottles and debris at responding officers. Police declared the area an unlawful assembly, and with the help of other agencies, officers moved in to disperse the horde and make arrests.
