Which Way, Democrats?

Some newly elected Democrats are sounding a conciliatory note. Others are calling for immediate reprisals.

Which way, Democrats? The last couple of cycles of American electoral politics have followed the same basic pattern: Voters, angry about high prices and exhausted by the incumbent party's culture war, opt to throw the bums out. The incoming party then overreads their victory as a mandate to find new ways to hike consumer prices and launch their own aggressive culture war (and sometimes an actual war).

We saw this story with Democrats in 2020, who were elected to end the madness of the first Trump administration and the COVID-19 era, and instead hiked inflation with huge amounts of unnecessary fiscal stimulus and went "full woke" on a range of cultural issues.

That set the stage for Donald Trump's historic political comeback in 2024. Once in office, the current president proceeded to raise the cost of living with tariffs against the entire globe, wage a war in Iran that's restricted the global supply of oil, and go all in on a range of right-wing social issues.

Two years after the much-ballyhooed "vibe shift," Democrats are now the ones staging the historic comeback. Will they now also overread this commanding victory and overreach too?

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

The post-election comments from many of Tuesday's victors give some indication that they've learned the lessons of recent history.

James Talarico, the Democratic senator-elect from Texas, sounded downright conciliatory when he appeared on Fox News on Wednesday.

"I look forward to working with him for all 31 million Texans."

Texas Senator-elect James Talarico says he's ready to work with President Trump, pointing to several issues where the Democrat believes they can find common ground.

— Fox News (@FoxNews) November 4, 2026

He said he was willing to work with Trump on bringing prices down through cutting red tape on housing construction and even complimented the president on having done a better job securing the border than his Democratic predecessor. That's an incredible statement given how polarizing and unpopular so much of Trump's immigration enforcement has been.

Talarico is a sharp guy who knows he just won an election in a red-leaning state. One might expect him to adopt a more moderate composure.

But even some of the more left-wing Democrats who triumphed in the midterms are sounding the same note.

When Abdul El-Sayed, the new senator-elect from Michigan, was asked on CNN yesterday what his first priorities in office would be, he said winding down the war in Iran, ending the tariff war with Canada, and reversing Republican cuts to Medicaid.

That's a message tailored toward the priorities of the cost-conscious swing voters that put him in office, and not the radical dreams of a progressive base.

The reprisals begin? On the flip side, The Washington Sun reports that senior congressional Democrats are passing around a lengthy dossier authored by the left-wing think tank Groundwork Collaborative, identifying company executives to haul in for oversight hearings in the next Congress.

Per the Sun's reporting, some Democrats want to use their investigative powers to narrowly focus on Trump administration corruption. But the Groundwork document is pushing for a broader investigation into every industry and business practice that's angered progressives over the past two years.

Senators like Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) reportedly see voters' anger over high prices as a mandate to prosecute big business for alleged price gouging behavior.

This is effectively the approach Democrats took during the Biden administration. When trillions in economic stimulus spiked inflation, progressives like Warren promised to bring prices down by going after sandwich shop "monopolies."

Now, instead of focusing on cutting tariffs and ending a war that's restricted global oil supply, some Democrats are reportedly itching to investigate AI labs and natural gas firms.

That kind of approach will fail to rein in prices. It will plausibly alienate swing voters who didn't think they were voting for a witch hunt against big business when they voted against Republicans on Tuesday.

Beyond investigating corporate America, Democrats are already calling for expanding Medicare and bringing back diversity, equity, and inclusion after Tuesday's election.

If history is any guide, Democrats' huge majorities in the next Congress might be short-lived after all.

Scenes from Washington, D.C.: The resistance to D.C.'s foie gras ban, supported by roughly three-quarters of voters on Tuesday, has already begun.

Bart Hutchins, chef and co-owner of Butterworth's (a French bistro and popular right-wing hangout), has vowed to continue to serve the appetizer made from fattened duck liver for the next decade.

This isn't quite full-on civil disobedience yet. The ban isn't scheduled to go into effect until July. Additionally, in D.C., the city has to fund enforcement of the law before it can go into full effect.

That can take time. D.C.'s ban on flavored tobacco technically went into effect in September 2021, but funding for enforcement of the law didn't kick in until October 2022.

Hutchins also said there will likely be legal challenges to the ban. So, for the time being, foie gras is still on the menu.

...the current president proceeded to raise the cost of living with tariffs against the entire globe, wage a war in Iran that's restricted the global supply of oil, and go all in on a range of right-wing social issues.

I was hoping to get a feel for the normies' read on deportations (concerted resistance by the pajama class not withstanding) in this election but it was the war and tariffs that got people to pull the lever for the islamocommies or to stay home.

    1. MasterThief   2 hours ago

I don't even think the tariffs were a real issue for voters. The media certainly tried beat that drum. Tariffs didn't really have much of an effect on American consumers, but the economy hasn't been good. People voted on cost of living and Iran (or really Israel)

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

Wages relative to inflation have increased the last 2 years. But reason and other outlets were able to shift the opposite trend under Biden to Trump.

They attacked every thing done to try to help, and cheered judges blocking all efforts as well.

        1. Murray Rothtard   2 hours ago

Dude. no one reads this fucking magazine. Reason had literally zero effect on the election and will never affect any election.

But it's amazing watching you try to pin the blame for Trump's colossal failures on everything and everyone but Trump himself. You are like a toddler standing over a broken vase trying to explain to his parents how aliens, or sasquatch came in and knocked it over. or maybe gravity reversed for a few moments.

i get it though. it's probably easier for your psyche to remain this detached from reality. natural defense mechanism of an undeveloped brain.

          1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

We know you dont read anything except dem talking points and watch maddow. Why youre always arguing from ignoeance and cheering the rise of communism.

I do love this is the new refrain from those who cheered 3 days ago now starting to see what they actually cheered for, that you have zero influence so it doesnt matter what you cheered for.

            Such an impotent man.

We get it. You and others easily fall for major media propaganda. Even here you continue to solely blame trump hatred generated by said media.

            Youre an impotent child.

You see first hand the costs of what you cheer but youre still a loyal soldier of their propaganda lol.

you caught me red handed Jesse. I'm here all day saying things like

"i have never voted democrat and you shouldn't either"
"man i bet the Dems are gonna fuck this up"

it's all straight out of Rachel Maddow's mouth and onto the page. just carrying that lefty propaganda. you read me like a book.

i hate both of the teams, dude. It's like i'm fighting a battle against two evil demons. one of the demons has been slayed. that's worth celebrating. it doesn't make me a worshiper of the other demon. thinking it does makes you a very simple-minded tribal idiot.

Day 3 of the finally defined affordability agenda. Let's check in.

    Gun agenda.

    Legal agenda:

    Locking up officials.

    Political agenda.

    @DavidFCavell
Oh my god. The back door to abolishing the Electoral College!

The Interstate Compact gives the presidency to whoever wins the most votes nationwide once states totaling 270+ electoral votes join.

With Dems flipping this many state legislatures, we shockingly have a path.

Ending electoral college. Man venezuela and Brazil seem to be the road map.

    Economics.

    Spending. Medicare for all. Welfare.

Already did the open borders being reopened yesterday.

Sure seems like moderation and affordability.

                There is no olive branch.

  6. MasterThief   2 hours ago

What a stupid fucking question. They have been aggressive in an extreme left agenda even when in the minority. Why the fuck do you even give air to any half-hearted platitudes of moderation when they were handed a landslide victory?
They see a mandate and overwhleming power. They will abuse it exponentially more than Trump and republicans ever have. Somehow despite all your prior histrionics about Trump and the GOP you'll be quiet when the DNC does it.

It's revealing but unsurprising that Britschgi tries to hide the Dems clearest statements on intent.

I want to look at these signature cases and not just focus on the president, but on the people who enabled him. I want young people coming out of school to say, 'Should I go work for the Trump administration? Like, that sounds fun, I might get an opportunity.' I want them to be like, 'Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don't want, and so let me avoid participating in that.' I want that deterrence message sent."

Why do you suppose he hides this while highlighting threats against businesses? Is it because he wants to protect those businesses but thinks intimidating non-leftist staffers and damaging their futures is perfectly fine?

    1. TrickyVic (old school)   1 hour ago

Socialist using the socialist way. Film at 11.

Fringe ideas in schools, they will grow out of it, just let them complain. Said by every society prior to a communist takeover.

Sadly in this case it is the actual dem leadership we ar being asked to ignore.

Schumer and Jeffries both being targeted now for asking them to tone it down.

"""Fannie Mae, the government-backed mortgage buyer that traditionally serves larger banks, now requires lenders to calculate how much a building can borrow on the assumption that stabilized rents will remain frozen for four to eight years while expenses rise by at least 5% annually. "Nuremberg Trials, Democrats," says influencer Nick Pringle. "Nuremberg Trials for all these people. You have not been hired to come in and do your best. You have been hired to come in and do your worst. And understand, this is the last vote you get until we see Epstein file convictions, alright?"

"Abdul, take those Wolverine claws I got you and park them under Stephen Miller's chin," he continued. "I want to see Jared Kushner's size five loafers swinging and dangling. Alright? If Elon Musk is alive at Christmas, it has been a failure, alright? We need to build Guantanamo Bay Two on Epstein Island, alright? Break ground on that today. GuanPedemo Island. Build it."

"Start sinking posts right now. Today. This is what we want to see. I swear to God if you come at us and say you're gonna let bygones be bygones, and we need to move on and heal as a country. I swear to God. We want justice, we want judgement day. Now's the time. This is the last time we vote for you unless you put belt to a**. We want Armageddon. We want justice," Pringle added.

The domestic industrialization report from last week was also stunning. Something eric said would never happen and idiots like qb/chitard ignore while screaming tariffs.

  26. BYODB   1 hour ago

Nothing about this is 'historic', and in fact the Democrat gains were more or less in line with how it's played out for at least the past 30 years.

As for Democrats over reaching, of course they will. They've drifted even further to the left, and nothing seems to be slowing that down so far.

    1. Michael Ejercito   1 hour ago

      Jack marshall pointed this out.
      https://ethicsalarms.com/2026/11/04/more-post-election-eve-ethics-observations/

      ---

Here are the worst post-WW II losses by a President’s party:

2010 Barack Obama lost 63 House seats (and 6 Senate seats), the largest modern midterm swing.
1946 Harry S Truman lost 56 House seats and 12 Senate seats.
1994 Bill Clinton lost 54 House seats and 8 Senate seats.
1958 Dwight Eisenhower lost 50 House seats and 13 Senate seats.
1974 Gerald Ford lost 48 House seats and 4 Senate seats.
And in 2018, Trump lost 41 House seats.
But that’s peanuts compared to mid-term losses in Congress suffered by earlier Presidents. Grover Cleveland lost 125 seats in 1894! In 1874, President Grant lost 98 seats in the House. Heck, even FDR got clobbered in 1938, losing 72 seats.

      ----

although, 1894 was the only other time in all American history where there was a midterm in a non-consecutive presidential second term, so there is not that much of a sample size for those kinds of midterms.

      1. BYODB   49 minutes ago

Indeed, Jack is a smart guy and his blog is a daily read for me. I was glad at least someone noticed and isn't calling this a 'blue wave' or 'historic' when it simply isn't.

There's a petition out there with over half a million signatures demanding that Jeffries and Schumer be replaced with Dems who are further left. The signers claim J/S are "basically Republicans." You know, like how Emmanuel Macron is basically a Nazi.

Senators like Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) reportedly see voters' anger over high prices as a mandate to prosecute big business for alleged price gouging behavior.

That may or may not be. But they are old farts who have no idea what this years election was really about. They are simply refashioning their favorite narratives from years past - like Reason articles. Re the Senate, the first step is going to be for that freshman class of 2026 to exert its power to force the generational change that has not occurred in the Senate. Not to defer to D leadership that is 80 years old and quietly wait its turn for future elections. The 2020 and 2024 elections were Prez elections - not midterm - and at the Congressional level virtually nothing happened.

The entire sales pitch by 80 year old critterleaders then was - we've got a small window by a Prez of the same party so don't rock the boat. We have to get things done. And in addition, Trump's attempted coup on Jan6 effectively ensured those old fats in Congress would have stronger power.

What changed in 2026 was CONGRESS.

  29. Deelerious   52 minutes ago

I keep reading that this was about tariffs. That's wrong...Dems won because Trump tossed his base into the trash.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   25 minutes ago

      Congressional gop leadership did.

      SAVE act as an example.

      1. MasterThief   3 minutes ago

Trump did a fair bit on his own. Iran is a betrayal to his base. He has done a ton of gaslighting of hardships people face and turned it into a lotalty test. Congress is the bigger culprit here for refusing to use their majority to cement changes, but Trump has been garbage at selling his policies to the public.

That can take time. D.C.'s ban on flavored tobacco technically went into effect in September 2021, but funding for enforcement of the law didn't kick in until October 2022.

    Hopefully they'll moderate their position.
