Latinos for trump | Mark Hertzberg/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Mark Hertzberg/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

No more election results yet: Democratic candidate Mary Peltola leads in Alaska, though the Senate race has not yet been called. There's still no final result in Mississippi's super-tight Senate race, and it might take until November 10, when all provisional ballots will be done being counted, to have a firm result.

But plenty of analysis: The era of the Latino Trump voter might be over. "As voters across Texas rejected Republicans to elect their first Democratic senator and governor in decades, nowhere was the shift more pronounced than in heavily Latino South Texas," reports Bloomberg. "From Brownsville through Laredo and up to Eagle Pass, heavily Hispanic counties in the region favored Democrats by margins that averaged over 40 points. That made for a stark contrast with President Donald Trump's gains two years ago, when he swept the area's traditional Democratic strongholds." It will be interesting to see whether this holds true in the next presidential election cycle, or whether Ken Paxton and Greg Abbott were just notoriously unpopular candidates matched with relatively charismatic newcomers, amid a backdrop of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity that Latino voters rejected.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Candidate/ballot initiative mismatch: "There is a very interesting mismatch between the elections for *candidates*," writes Charles C.W. Cooke on X, "which effectively yielded a massive and historic sweep for the Democrats, and the *ballot initiatives*, almost all all [sic] of which yielded conservative outcomes, even in the deep blue states (but not VA)."

This is good news: People in many parts of the country seem to like conservative policy positions—ballot initiatives that cap certain taxes, for example—but dislike or distrust Republican politicians right now. Count me among them.

Some initiatives, like ones that allow the building or expansion of data centers, are just terribly unpopular across the board: "There were 41 data center-related initiatives on local ballots," writes Reason's Christian Britschgi. "Most of these were proposing bans, moratoriums, or additional zoning restrictions on data centers. In all but two of those races, the anti-data center position won." The tech overlords will have to contend with this massive political backlash, and do a much better job with their AI sales pitch than just "it will replace your jobs en masse and you must supply the land on which we build the infrastructure to power it," which is understandably not super attractive to the median rural voter.

Party durability is no more: Do not look at the results from Tuesday as a glowing endorsement of Democrats so much as a repudiation of those in power. (A welcome and familiar sentiment for libertarians.) "Young voters and nonwhite voters (who are, themselves, disproportionately younger than whites) are not so much punching tickets to join a party as they are leasing one-year terms to vote for one group, only to punish them in the next election if things don't improve," writes Derek Thompson.

He also argues that Trump has terrible taste in candidates, and the Republican Party must not pay for this: "Trump pushed out popular conservative senators in Texas and North Carolina for insufficient loyalty and backed horrendous wannabes that gave Democrats a chance to win in parts of the country where not even the most hopium-addled lib would have dreamed of winning in January 2025," notes Thompson. As Trump's influence over the party presumably wanes, it will be interesting to see what the course-correction looks like, and whether it will be too little too late.

Scenes from Texas: Lord forgive me, I'm fighting about Senator-elect James Talarico on the internet again.

I would argue Talarico's theology is not recognizable to the majority of Christians, and is instead mostly palatable to the non-religious and very lightly religious https://t.co/9p2lJvaOce

QUICK HITS

  • A note from your host: I unfortunately have to go to another funeral tomorrow, and Reason Roundup will have a guest writer. It's been a bad week, y'all. Sorry for all the disruptions, especially during this important time. We'll be back to regularly scheduled programming next week.
  • "As bad as things were for Republicans nationally on election night, they were arguably worse in North Carolina—ground zero for a repudiation of President Donald Trump's attempts to strong-arm GOP control of government that left this formerly red Southern state bluer than ever," argues The Washington Post.
  • Open to this being a positive change:

Mamdani's ballot props have mercifully euthanized the worst "public input" for routine infrastructure: 1970s Public Citizen-style workday hearings that no normal people can *ever* attend

These inherently undemocratic vetocracy procedures were ended by real democracy: Elections https://t.co/LEwD988O5f

— Alex Armlovich (@aarmlovi) November 5, 2026

  • I think it's not just this—the poorly-refined pitch from AI makers as to how it will transform the future of work—but also the failures of the Department of Government Efficiency, and the real inability of tech overlords to sell the idea that their products result in meaningful efficiency or quality-of-life gains. Instead, we got, like, Flock cameras.

Not the determining issue, but one sub-theme of the election is that the idea of an accelerationist "tech right" in 2022-2024 was associated with cool rocketry and new military hardware, but once in power it ended up associated with the terrible vibes of the AI industry instead.

  • New developments in Congress:

🚨🚨BREAKING NEWS -- REP. JIM JORDAN will announce this morning that he's running for House minority leader.

The Ohio Republican is the first person in the minority leader race.

JORDAN will make the case that the leadership needs new blood, investigations are his specialty.…

🚨🚨BREAKING NEWS -- MIKE JOHNSON will not run for House minority leader.

He just said it on the staff call.

Democratic candidate Mary Peltola leads in Alaska, though the Senate race has not yet been called.

I'm still rooting for either of the two Sullivans.

    1. BYODB   47 minutes ago

Last I saw, Sullivan was trailing by less than the votes for the other Sullivan so I guess the ruse worked.

There's no way the Democrats screw up so badly that they get the boot again in the coming years. It's carte blanche right now for all things woke.

to describe 2021-2024, it is as if someone on January 19, 2021 published a book titled How Trump Can Win in 2024, and the Dems proceeded to treat it as an instruction manual.

The weird thing about texas... talarico got 1M more votes than Harris. Not explained by migration to the state either.

    But even there...

Texas wom by 11% in 2022. Since that time 500k tech workers moved on, many from California. This is more than thr number of vote difference from 2023. California continues to export awful voters to other states.

Other concerning reports from election day are the unified voting blocks from recent migrants communities. Voting in near lock step. Somali in minnesota. Dearborn Michigan. And both of the candidates who won said they would fight for other countries in their victory speeches, not americans.

The most concerning... muslim brotherhood openly stating what happened in Michigan.

    DSA Watch
    @DSA_Watch
The Muslim Brotherhood has congratulated Abdul El-Sayed on his victory

Abdel Mawgoud al-Dardiri, a top leader, says his win is a model for Muslims working "from within the political system" on behalf of the "Islamic world"

    https://x.com/DSA_Watch/status/2118010919510851637

This is what chitard and other democrats are cheering. Islamic takeover of western systems. Rise of socialists gaining democrat seats. More division by race. In fact Ro is cheering the return of DEI.

    Ro Khanna
    @RoKhanna
    DEI is back!

On top of the promised political prosecutions and attempts to take Musks companies with even calls for treason to murder him.

Guess this is what democrats and reason supports.

Weird how the affordability message is already gone.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

Dan Crenshaw also had his first intelligent statement in a while. Pointing out democrats blocked the very bills they ran on and now claim want to pass.

      Dan Crenshaw
      @DanCrenshawTX
Watch Rep. Raskin unravel when I point out what the GOP should have been doing all along: telling the truth. Democrats BLOCKED bipartisan legislation on data centers (force them to pay for their own power), and BLOCKED bipartisan legislation to stop stock trading. Why? Because they wanted to RUN ON THESE ISSUES IN THE MIDTERMS. Yes, it’s a classic cynical political ploy, and the public almost always falls for it.

Smart politics? Yes. Ethical governance? Hell no.

Raskin even admitted that he believed good policy should take a back seat to good politics. That mentality disgusts me.

Doing what's right for the country matters more than winning elections. My insufferable democrat colleague disagrees – or maybe he understands it perfectly well and just doesn't care.

I'm not going to apologize for defending President Trump and American national security. And I'm not going to pretend that losing an election suddenly makes those policies wrong.

And Republicans? Learn the right lessons. Yall f***ed up. Badly. You spent hundreds of millions of dollars on transgender ads instead of explaining why Democrats caused high prices and how Republican policies saved people money on their taxes and reduce costs in the long term.

      https://x.com/DanCrenshawTX/status/2118133168209363386

On CNN he pointed out to Jamie Raskin that Democrats voted against the very bills they campaigned on. Congressional stock trafing. Fair rate charging fir data center power costs. And others.

And reason as usual blamed republicans instead of the no votes.

      1. rswallen   1 hour ago

So, like the border bill under Biden?

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

The border bill under biden that legalized the illegal open border under Biden?

Did you actually read the bill?

    2. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

But this is the priority for Democrats.

      https://legalinsurrection.com/2026/11/lawyer-up-democrats-declare-war-on-trump-administration/

Not the unity they ran on. Not affordability. And midwits fell for it.

    3. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

And let us also not forget the promise of the return to open borders. With caravans already starting again.

      Bill Melugin
      @BillMelugin_
Understand the implications of what happened in Texas last night.

Gina Hinojosa has called on Gov. Abbott to end state & local cooperation with ICE & she can order that on day one.

Hinojosa voted against the 2017 SB 4 as a TX state rep. The bill was essentially a sanctuary cities ban and required TX law enforcement to cooperate with ICE detainers. She then voted against another SB 4 in 2023, which made it a state crime to cross illegally into Texas.

Should there be another border crisis in coming years, there will likely be no resistance from Texas at the border. No Texas DPS, no TX National Guard, no razor wire or water buoys, and no Operation Lone Star, which Hinojosa called a “dog and pony show” and “political theater”.

Remember when 15,000 Haitians surged illegally into Del Rio, TX in 2021 under the international bridge? That was only stopped because Texas DPS responded on Abbott’s orders and physically blocked further crossings by lining up their cruisers to form a wall. The Biden Border Patrol was caught off guard and offered almost no resistance, except for some horseback agents who were falsely slandered for “whipping”.

Additionally, because Republicans failed to pass any legislation codifying President Trump’s border security measures, if Dems take the White House in 2028, that Dem president could, if he/she wants to, reverse every single Trump border security policy immediately upon taking office because they were all done at the executive level, and they can order Border Patrol to go back to a passive catch & release policy like we saw under Biden.

      1. TrickyVic (old school)   2 hours ago

""end state & local cooperation with ICE""

They should be careful of what they ask. The feds can come in on their own and do the work themselves. Then state politicians will wonder why the feds are ignoring and not cooperating with them.

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 hours ago

They've openly stated their plan is to cause a federal response. Because idiots cheered the protestors against ICE. They are trying to incite conflict.

yhe obvious response to these protesters is to show the faces of these White girls who were murdered because illegalkind wanted to rape their pussies!

        2. Rev Arthur L kuckland (5-30-24 banana republic day)   1 hour ago

Any state that has sanctuary cities should immediately loose all Medicare, medicaid, social security, and education services

          1. mad.casual   43 minutes ago

Phbbbbt! Not that you're wrong. But, Phbbbbt!

California could declare a goal to be the state of "100% abortion Reproductive Healthcare, 100% genital mutilation gender conversion therapy, and 100% euthenasia MAID" tomorrow and Gillespie would do an(other) interview with Stagliano about how, sure, his house burned down *and* can't be rebuilt because of government mismanagement, *and* the government is all but openly trying to actively kill you at every turn *and* medicate or mutilate you at every other turn, but the state is so groovy because no place else on Earth has sunlight, salt water, and moderate temperatures, or, most importantly, butt sex.

Libertarians who *should* be talking about "Why does any portion of any government anywhere pay for any of this?" will be talking about other stuff and the representatives who should be stopping it would be looking at a 50/50 as to whether they'd get pushback from them even if they *were* willing to risk their political careers.

    4. rswallen   1 hour ago

The weird thing about texas... talarico got 1M more votes than Harris. Not explained by migration to the state either.

Because that's the only explanation - others moving to Texas. Absolutely no chance of voters already within Texas becoming so royally pissed off with Trump and the GOP that they decide to vote blue to reign in Trump. Right?

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

Simpleton logic ignores the governor position. Because they are simpletons. And want to justify their emotional choices.

Let me guess. Youre going to ignore any costs or bad outcomes from your emotional choices?

Its what liberals do. Complain about the costs of dem control, move to a successful state, vote for the very same party that cause them to leave.

        1. rswallen   1 hour ago

What emotional choices? I didn't vote (I'm British, living in the UK. Yes, we even colonise your websites now)

          1. Idaho-Bob   54 minutes ago

            Brits can't colonize London.

            1. rswallen   47 minutes ago

I understand you lot have a few Londons. Perhaps we could reclaim one of those instead.

          2. mad.casual   31 minutes ago

I'm British, living in the UK.

That would explain your detached ignorance above about voter turnout for midterm elections vs. Presidential elections.

Even your more "cultural" explanation sounds like a low-IQ remix of 2016 and 2020; where all the closeted racists who voted for Obama for two terms suddenly decided to endorse Trump because it was finally OK to hate black people again. Maybe more Texans voted for Talarico for *State Senate* than voted for Kamala *for President* because he's a white male, eh? Maybe GOP voters had 1M more kids 18 yrs. ago who just happened to be Democrats this election, right? Best not to look into it either way, right?

Even for a Brit that's pretty stupid.

            1. rswallen   20 minutes ago

Putting aside the fact that Talerico was running for US Senate (not the state senate), what is your explanation for this "discrepancy"?

Democrats weren't the only ones celebrating amid shattering defeats for Republicans in the midterm elections — Iranian leaders also took a victory lap Wednesday.

"The process of the US’s collapse has accelerated," Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, posted on an official English language account on X.

"Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message," Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has also served as Tehran's chief negotiator in talks with Washington, posted on X.

Other findings show groups like CHRLA were given regional voting location centers. They were caught on camera telling voters which candidates to pick, walking them through the ballot and telling them who to select. A violation of federal law.

En Banc 9th circuit says the TRO against the trump for segragatinf ballots was wrong on the law and constitution.

Of course activist jusdges delayed the process enough that there is no resolution as the ballots were already processed and made it into the vote total.

I would argue Talarico's theology is not recognizable to the majority of Christians, and is instead mostly palatable to the non-religious and very lightly religious

Too kind, Liz. I would argue that Talarico's theology is not recognizable to the majority of cafeteria Catholics and even pretty dim-witted or disinterested non-religious.

His supporters don't care. Even he doesn't really care.

Unfortunately, years of Nick Gillespie and Elizabeth Nolan Brown's shrill shrieks of "Christofascism!" have, intentionally or not, made them deaf to destructive, idiotic, nihilistic, relgious carpetbaggers claiming The Will To Power.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

when you are running against a fucking criminal, even the lightly religious seem pious enough

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

And here comes chitard to defend his cheering of socialists.

Talarico voted illegally from his parents house address multiple times.

Lightly religious is a hilarious descriptor though when his church says they dont even know if Jesus was real or heaven exists lol. Latter literally said to a dying man seeking comfort.

Im not surprised you prefer lying, drag loving, voter fraud committing, socialists though.

Its kind of your leftist brand.

Will be hilarious to see you pretending you aren't a Democrat as democrats abuse their position though. Raising costs, taxes, and spending. Pretending you never cheered this outcome.

Youre a leftist. Just too dumb to realize it.

          1. rswallen   49 minutes ago

they dont even know if Jesus was real or heaven exists

I thought that was the meaning of faith - to not know, but to believe anyway

            1. mad.casual   3 minutes ago

Being a Brit, with English as your native tongue and all the innate shades of subtle meaning baked into your DNA, I would've thought you would understand the distinction between "faith" and "religion". You can believe in a higher power, but if a religion, speaking on behalf of that higher power says "The sky is blue." and you disagree that it's pink, you can still have faith that a higher power deigns the color of the sky but you aren't, necessarily, a member of that religion's faithful. Moreover, insisting that you are is overtly bad faith both to their religion, yours, and everyone else who can reason to themselves, regardless of their own faith or religion, what color the(y think or feel) sky is.

I'm beginning to think you aren't actually a Brit and are, instead, just a bog-standard, low-IQ product of some portion of the American public education system.

          2. Murray Rothtard   38 minutes ago

dude. i'm aware Talrico sucks. i didn't vote for him and i don't support him.

you are too dumb to realize this no matter how often i repeat it, but i'll try again: I blame Trump and the Rs for only putting up corrupt pieces of shit this election.

the only joy i feel right now is knowing that America fucking hates Donald Trump and everything he stands for. i feel no joy or support for Talrico. shitting on him will just get nods of agreement over here.

      2. mad.casual   21 minutes ago

The good explanation is that they're really dim.

The bad explanation is, as I linked above, their moral flexibility and (reluctant and strategically oxymoronic) hatred of "all" religions "equally", makes them incapable of distinguishing a Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. from a Rev. Jim Jones.

    2. JFree   6 minutes ago

Talarico is currently studying at a Presbyterian seminary. His theology is completely mainstream Presbyterian which is in turn one of the most mainstream religions in the US since the colonial era. Ten Presidents have been Presbyterian - as were 12 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Princeton was founded as Presbyterianism's colonial era seminary and James Madison studied theology there under John Witherspoon (also signed the Declaration of Independence, drafted the Articles of Confederation, and was drafting the Presbyterian Constitution in Philadelphia at the same time Madison drafted the US Constitution).

Presbyterians don't test people to be pious and believe in all sorts of rigid stuff. Which is of course exactly why Donald Trump was a Presbyterian before he became a unapologetic secular narcissist.

Whatever form of 'Christianity' you and Wolfe adhere to, I can bet it is a 19th or 20th century heresy that was only 'normalized' through mass media.

It would effectively end the election. No need to worry about the remaining ballots. Republicans have called for ending counts rather than extending them.

In backing Paxton did Trump not only cost Republicans the Texas Senate seat but also the Governorship? Did Gina Hinojosa ride the Talarico coat tails to defeat Abbot? It seems this could be a case where Trump hit Texas Republicans into a double play.

    https://ethicsalarms.com/2026/11/05/the-gops-anti-biological-males-in-womens-sports-emphasis-bad-campaign-strategy-but-still-the-ethical-thing-to-do/

The long knives and fingers have come out in Conservative Land as its denizens and their consultants decide who’s to blame for Tuesday’s electoral wipe-out. One theme is that the GOP’s emphasis on the Left’s wacko insistence on “trans rights,” including the right of a male athlete to just declare that he is a she and now could excel in the female version of the sport he stunk at as a male was foolish.

The issue just didn’t matter to most voters, they are saying. The obvious dishonesty and injustice didn’t involve many people either. In other words, “Who cares?”, “So what?” and “To hell with those girls!” What mattered is “affordability”: you know, the fake issue Democrats came up with to hold the Trump Administration responsible for the high prices caused by the Biden Administration.

This kind of thinking—unethical thinking—is the Iran war and Democrat-sponsored anti-Semitism in microcosm. The Trump Administration took necessary steps to end Iran’s nuclear threat, its sponsorship of terrorism, and at home, the illegal persecution of Jewish students on college campuses, but never mind: what it should have been concentrating on wasn’t lives, prejudice and justice, but what most Americans care about: themselves. The consultant calculus was followed this cycle in other areas, such as abortion: Republican candidates for state office barely whispered opposition to the legalized killing of millions of unborn human beings. Not prudent. Embryos don’t vote.

Meanwhile, Democrats decided that it was strategically sound to pander to its LGPTQ base with the brutal calculation that most of the public doesn’t care if a female college swimmer finishes second because the first place finisher has been shaving for years. The real female cares, and her parents care, but that’s not enough. It’s not even enough when a trans-female volleyball player breaks a girl’s face with a violent spike.

Nonetheless, the GOP’s focus on the Left’s unethical position has begun to solve the problem. Propositions on the ballot in four states, Arizona, Nebraska, Colorado and Washington, offered voters this week a chance to stop “Poof! I’m a girl!” athletes from dominating females in women’s sports. The measures look like they will prevail in all four.

In Arizona, Proposition 318, Require All Schools and Athletic Associations to Restrict Sports Participation and Access to Private Spaces Based on Sex Measure, passed 58.9% to 41.1% with 1,219,360 votes. Nebraska’s Measure 442, Sex Requirement for School and College Sports Initiative that would add Art. VII §16, Equal access to athletic opportunities for females, to the Nebraska Constitution also passed, 67.97% to 32.03% with 486,650 votes. Colorado’s equivalent measure and Washington’s are both too close to call because those states are in the grip of Stage 4 wokification, but the yes votes are leading in both.

    It matters.
