What Will Democrats Do?

With Republicans likely headed for a good ol' fashioned ass kicking in next week's midterm election, it doesn't seem too premature to ask the next big question: What are the Democrats going to do once they have a congressional majority?

The New York Times reports that Democrats will move quickly on four items that are "consensus items among their members that are basic enough to bypass time-consuming committee consideration and go straight to the floor."

Two of those items are really good ideas: ending President Donald Trump's tariffs and ending the war in Iran (or ordering Trump to "seek authorization from Congress to continue it"). Both would restore proper congressional authority in areas where Trump has expanded executive power, with terrible results.

The other priorities, however, include reversing Medicaid spending cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and extending some Affordable Care Act health care subsidies that expired last year. Both would require higher spending at a time when the federal government is already running $2 trillion annual deficits and the national debt is at a record high.

But that's probably a pretty good summary of what Democratic control of Congress for the next few years will look like: a mix of critically important reforms to combat Trump's big-government agenda and, well, the Democrats' own big-government agenda.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Over at National Review, John Puri has an extensive list of "truly frightening" policies Democrats could pursue after the midterms, including stuff like bypassing the filibuster to borrow more heavily, arbitrarily restricting commerce, handing out taxpayer money to political allies, and promising "free" money for everyone. Gosh, I sure hope none of that happens (again).

More seriously, there are also likely to be some major investigations into corruption and other executive branch misdeeds. Trump's family and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth are likely to be among the main targets. Hegseth could "face impeachment—which would make him just the third Cabinet secretary in history to face such a sanction," The Atlantic reports.

No wonder Hegseth is reportedly looking for an exit strategy.

Of course, there are plenty of caveats to this. Most importantly, Trump will still be the president—and will be able to veto anything the Democrats pass through Congress. There's also the Senate's filibuster rules. Even the biggest of blue waves is highly unlikely to deliver a 60-seat majority.

Though they may dream big, Democrats will face some serious constraints on their policymaking agenda. They will face fewer obstacles in blocking, unwinding, and investigating Trump's unlawful and corrupt actions—and that's where I, for one, hope they will spend their efforts.

Scenes from Washington, D.C.: "On Sept. 16, Leo J. Terrell threatened to choke a Justice Department intern with a computer charger."

So begins The Harvard Crimson's scathing and deeply reported takedown of Terrell, the former talk radio host and Fox News contributor who is now the senior Justice Department official running the Trump administration's crackdown on elite universities (which is ostensibly an effort to police antisemitism but seems more like an excuse to use federal taxpayer dollars to fight a culture war).

The computer cord incident "was one of a series of episodes described by Billa and three other interns, all Jewish," the Crimson reports. "Terrell isolated them from the rest of the Justice Department, berated them over minor mistakes, and repeatedly threatened their jobs or careers."

When he's not harassing his staffers, Terrell seems to be overcome with delusions of grandeur. A planned 15-city media tour in advance of the midterms "was supposed to be the centerpiece of Terrell's work" and would have put him on stage with singers, comedians, and professional athletes. One event has been held so far: "an Oct. 14 gathering at a synagogue in Southfield, Mich. with Terrell as the keynote speaker."

QUICK HITS

  • Hackers stole $6.3 billion of bitcoin from the Binance crypto exchange. Another hacking attempt on Thursday targeted Polymarket.
  • ProPublica has "tallied and cataloged every case we can find of an immigration agent reportedly detaining a citizen during the current administration—more than 500 cases from Inauguration Day through Oct. 21, 2026."
  • Federal debt held by the public has surpassed the size of the U.S. economy for the first time since World War II. Unlike back then, however, the debt is being driven by entitlement spending, which means it is going to keep spiraling higher.
  • Relatedly, five states are carrying more than $30,000 in debt per capita, according to a new report from the Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes Reason: New York ($37,006 per capita), New Jersey ($35,100), Connecticut ($33,189), Illinois ($31,582) and Hawaii ($30,759). All told, America's state and local governments are more than $6 trillion in debt.
  • If you ever wanted a Mothman license plate (and who doesn't), that's now available in West Virginia.
  • Patrick Stewart, the legendary actor whose range included everything from Shakespeare to starships, died at age 86.

Still amusing that reasom always settles on the NYT narratives.

Sure democrats aren't even running as moderates this time. Medicare for all. Impeach until death. Higher taxes. GND. Rent controls. But really guys, they are moderates. Reasom needs to keep up that charade since the NYT is.

The next KBJ. (Brown is a federal judge)

Brown, a black and Native American woman, said, “I think what’s happening here, quite candidly, is you are very intimidated for some reason, Mr. Young, with Black excellence, in light of your White mediocrity. Yeah. Right?” She added, “You should write that down. I mean, you — I’m — you look like a White man, right?”

Young politely informed her that he was not white, but Latino.

“Well, you are White-presenting; is that fair to say?” she asked.

    “I’m fair-skinned, Your Honor, yes.”

Brown replied, “You’re the White savior, come to save all the stupid Black lawyers in Texas who need your help, from New York.”

Is there a government program that is not just a vehicle for fraud?

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/feds-charge-5-people-as-part-of-sprawling-ghost-students-probe/ar-AA2gmTL8

Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald said at a press conference Thursday that the Justice Department had filed charges against five individuals in Nebraska, Virginia and New Jersey who are accused of conspiring with foreign nationals in apparently unrelated schemes to siphon off a combined $2.9 million from federal student financial aid programs.

The charges include theft of government property, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Officials said the criminal charges unveiled Thursday are part of a government-wide investigation called "Operation Ghostbusters," which spans more than 40 cases in 26 FBI field offices across the country.

ABC News and ABC-owned stations previously examined the growing scam, which officials say has cost the federal government hundreds of millions of dollars each year, leaving an untold number of victims in its wake.

Enrollees in California's Medi-Cal welfare program — including millions of illegals — receive free meals and groceries such as salmon, beef, organic produce and pre-prepared luxury health food brands each week, thanks to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's $12 billion Medicaid reform package, "CalAIM," a Wednesday report from City Journal found.

Nearly 14 million people living in California are enrolled in Medi-Cal as of an Aug. 12 report from the UC Berkley Labor Center.

In 2024, the state extended "full-scope" Medi-Cal coverage to illegal aliens, with some 1.6 million undocumented persons relying on the welfare program to receive free healthcare, according to the California Health Care foundation.

Meanwhile, in Florida...what gets me is why these were ever allowed in the first place?

      https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/4699177/desantis-cuts-tattoos-tanning-beds-tobacco-welfare-benefits-list/

DeSantis, who is viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, said he is working with the Trump administration to amend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families State Plan, spurring changes to what welfare recipients can spend their Temporary Cash Assistance benefits on.

DeSantis’ reforms for TCA are aimed at curbing fraud and would not reduce the amount of assistance eligible families receive, but rather ensure the welfare benefits are used for necessities such as groceries, clothing, and medicine, he said.

TCA benefits, which are issued through an EBT card, would no longer be allowed to be spent on tobacco, nicotine, and vaping products; drugs and intoxicants; pornography, video games, entertainment tickets, theme park admission, and entertainment subscriptions; tattoos, spa services, tanning, and other luxury services; and psychic and fortune-telling services.

      2. chemjeff radical individualist   40 minutes ago

why these were ever allowed in the first place?

Not supporting welfare money going to those things specifically. But there is always a tradeoff associated with compliance costs. One reason why things like junk food tend to be allowed with SNAP is because it can be cheaper overall to let people spend the money on junk food, than to spend money trying to police that behavior. Someone has to decide what is junk food and what is not, someone has to audit the grocery stores to see if they are complying, someone has to prosecute the stores and the customers for breaking the rules, etc.

Of course, if the actual goal here isn't about saving money, but about teaching the poors a proper moral lesson, then go ahead and spend away on whatever you need to spend to make sure they learn that lesson good and hard.

    2. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

An Egyptian man pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges for a deadly firebombing attack on people who were holding a rally last year in Boulder, Colorado, in support of hostages taken in the Hamas-led, Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack on Israel.

Mohamed Soliman is currently serving life in prison after pleading guilty to state charges last spring, and Thursday's guilty plea means he will face an additional life sentence, the Associated Press reported.

As demonstrators marched in support of hostages taken in the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, Soliman lit and threw two Molotov cocktails at those marching and yelled "Free Palestine."

According to federal prosecutors, Soliman attacked the demonstrators in June 2025 because they were Jewish. Karen Diamond, 82, who was badly burned in the attack, died three weeks later after suffering what her family said was "indescribable pain."

On Thursday, Soliman pleaded guilty to nine federal counts of hate crimes, including one resulting in Diamond's death and eight for attempting to kill other demonstrators. Three additional counts were federal weapons charges.

What are the Democrats going to do once they have a congressional majority?

    Oh, that's easy.

    1. Mandatory transing of all public school children, and mandatory abortions for women everywhere. Because Democrats hate children!
    2. Abolish ICE, which means open borders, and a flood of immigrant criminal rapists and murderers will once again flood American streets. Also, abolish prisons, which means a flood of domestic criminal rapists and murderers will flood American streets. Because Democrats are pro-crime, hate law-abiding people, and want you to suffer!
    3. Raise taxes to infinity and use that money to fund deliberately fraudulent programs. Because Democrats are pro-fraud!
    4. Mandatory gay marriages for everyone. Because Democrats hate heterosexuality and want to force you to be gay!
    5. Mandatory lessons in flag burning in every American classroom. Because Democrats hate America and want to indoctrinate children into hating America too!
    6. Confiscation of all guns, and using air strikes and nuclear bombs on those who refuse to hand over their guns. Because Democrats hate gun owners and are not hesitant to nuke American cities in order to prove the point!

I think that about covers it. Democrats really are the party of hate. Vote for Republicans, which is the party of love. They love children so much they want to force women to give birth. They love freedom so much they want to take away your free speech right to burn a flag. They love capitalism so much they want the government to take ownership stakes in American companies so that they will prosper. They love America so much they want to send anonymous masked police into every city to root out the scum and vermin that are hiding there. USA! USA! USA!

It's not a culture war when Democrats use government funds to discriminate against non-leftists, men, whites, or jews. It's only a culture war when people object to that discrimination.

    Typical.
