The plot thickens: Last night, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, said he would launch an investigation into Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola. This is because of late-breaking allegations that Peltola's staffers tried to recruit candidates to run in the Senate race that could confuse voters into not voting for her opponent.

"In the summer of 2025, a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can," reported The New York Times yesterday. "This was no random request. Dan S. Sullivan is the name of the state's Republican senator. And if the Peltola campaign or its allies could track down and persuade another Dan Sullivan to run for Senate, the confusion could cost the senator crucial votes on the state's unusual, four-person ballot." A retired teacher named Dan J. Sullivan got on the ballot and started running for Senate.

Peltola's campaign denied allegations that they were involved in getting Sullivan on the ballot.

It's kind of a nasty tactic designed to confuse voters into submission. And the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to block the certification of election results based on the Sullivan hijinks, seemingly because the issue has garnered President Donald Trump's attention.

Yesterday, Trump said not only that Peltola should leave the race, but also that she should be criminally prosecuted. It's possible the behavior Peltola engaged in isn't actually illegal, to which Attorney General Todd Blanche countered: "It should be!"

This trick has been tried before. In 1946, John F. Kennedy was running in a crowded Democratic primary for Massachusetts' 11th Congressional District. One of his rivals was Joseph Russo, a popular Boston city councilman and the only Italian-American candidate in the race (in an area with a mighty Italian population). So a second Joseph Russo—a janitor—mysteriously appeared on the ballot. Kennedy family patriarch Joe Kennedy is widely believed to have combed the voter rolls to find him.

In that case, the hijinks were unnecessary: JFK won with about 42 percent of the vote, and the real Russo got about 11 percent. Decoy Russo only got 799 votes.

I think the candidates in tight races who are engaging in desperate chicanery—think not just Peltola, but also Vivek Ramaswamy's use of Amy Acton's mother in a nasty ad—might overestimate voters' tolerance of such antics, especially in a midterm cycle that's been so characterized by cost-of-living issues.

Scenes from New York: A Brooklyn woman, Halima Salman, was apparently training with ISIS. Salman, an American citizen, was brought to Syria by her father when she was a teenager and somehow developed close ties to the terrorist group. "Salman, who faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing, is believed to be the first woman accused of being an ISIS member to stand trial in federal court," reports The New York Times. (There are a lot of jokes I could make here, most of which would not be so tasteful, so I'll let our esteemed commenters handle it.)

QUICK HITS

  • "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu entered Tuesday's Israeli election with a governing majority and is now on course to exit with something less," reports the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal. "That's one way to understand the result, but it was also widely anticipated. The surprising news is the opposition's failure to come out ahead of Mr. Netanyahu. He may not have won, but the opposition lost.…At present count Mr. Netanyahu's Likud party is in first place, projected to win 26 or 27 seats in Israel's 120-seat Knesset. That's down from 32 in the current Knesset but up from the 19 or 21 in pre-election polls. The opposition Yashar party of former military chief Gadi Eisenkot lags at 21 seats."
  • "Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Wednesday left the central bank on track to raise interest rates again this year, even as he stuck to his refusal to offer any explicit guidance on the future path of policy," reports Bloomberg. "Operating within his self-imposed communication boundaries, Warsh used his assessment of a strong economy and warnings over persistent inflation to signal the Fed's job is not yet done. The message reinforced expectations that officials will raise borrowing costs in December—after holding them steady Wednesday—with the potential for another increase in early 2027."
  • Allie Beth Stuckey is politically burnt out, says Bloomberg.
  • The differences between sex realism and gender realism, and what sex-realist feminists are actually fighting for.

...Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, said he would launch an investigation into Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola.

She ain't worried. She's only trying to save democracy, after all.

CNN says it's perfectly fine...it's not illegal so it's perfectly fine.

WATCH: CNN's Dana Bash, Mark Preston, and Alayna Trenne DEFEND Alaska Democrats and Mary Peltola's campaign after The New York Times bombshell confirms they worked with national Democrats to find another "Dan Sullivan" to run in #AKSen to confuse voters

“So, this is not illegal. It is not new”

“Listen, two things you said very important. It’s not illegal and it’s not new.”

“I use the term dirty tricks intentionally because it’s — it’s not illegal. This is something that — is untoward. It is something that Democrats have tried to do in races where they think it could be to their advantage to run candidates that could siphon votes away from Republicans and Republicans do the same. I mean, just in Alaska alone, Mary Peltola, who’s now on the ballot for the senate, she lost her House race two years ago. On that ballot, there was a candidate who was literally in prison who was reportedly recruited and — and kept on the ballot at the behest of Republicans. There’s a socialist running in Ohio with the hopes of taking votes away from the Democrat, Sherrod Brown. These are dirty tricks. They are legal, dirty tricks. But again, at a time when you have a President and his — supporters, particularly those with very big platforms, trying to undermine the election, and Alaska is a potentially key and even pivotal, pivotal Senate seat that could determine the outcome of the control of the Senate, it’s a big deal.”

“It’s absolutely a big deal, and I think there’s no question, despite as you all have pointed out, and I think it’s worth saying, again, this was not illegal, something that [Republicans] are going to blow up.”

      1. Zeb   2 hours ago

Isn't it pretty standard practice to identify the party of politicians in news stories? I think you might be reading too much into that. I've never seen any reason to think Liz has any preference or bias for Ds over Rs.

Umm... she has twice had favorable articles about Hinojosa. Also article tone does matter. Overt statement is not a requirement to judge biases.

Go read her old federalist articles and compare them to recent reason articles. She has shifted.

Mind you, they never registered or voted during this. But still charged.

Moriarty's argument is that stating a false identity to an election judge is already part of applying for a ballot. "They did begin to apply," she said, calling vouching "a multi-step process," according to Fox 9. She also acknowledged that being provocative is not a crime, but misidentifying oneself at a polling place is, MPR reports.

That is not a law on the books.

Higby responded on X that the charges would "take my right to vote away," calling them "lawfare." In a statement he said the project "was conducted to expose vulnerabilities in the Minnesota voting system." "I never voted, I never signed an affidavit, and I never violated a law," he said, per Fox 9. O'Keefe's group, which calls itself the Justice League, has said it "did not impersonate anyone."

Venezuelan migrant Oscar Daniel Isaya Corrales was killed by an off-duty FBI agent Monday night after he began shooting into a homeless encampment, the bureau confirmed to the Daily Caller. Isaya Corrales illegally crossed the Southern Border and entered into the country in October 2023, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"On Oct. 26 at approximately 5:30 pm near West 18th and South Union Avenue in Chicago, an off-duty FBI agent observed an unknown individual discharging a firearm into a group of innocent people, firing at least two shots," an FBI spokesperson told the Caller. Investigators discovered a WhatsApp group with more than 230 members discussing attacks on law enforcement, arson and robberies, prompting approximately 150 searches across Italy, Euronews reported Tuesday. Authorities seized knives, brass knuckles, an axe bearing an anti-police inscription and other weapons as a separate investigation into a researcher accused of inciting violence with terrorist intent continues.

Upon the arrest of Youseff Siher — a Moroccan academic with a background in Islamic studies — police searched his phone, uncovering a WhatsApp group of nearly 230 people, according to Euro News. In this group was a message that urged members to not put their ski masks on right away, as to evade police. Investigators obtained a warrant to search the house of the teenager behind the message, where they found a balaclava and an Under Armour shirt believed to be stolen.

Conversations within this group incited violence, with members planning to "steal their [police officers] weapons," EuroNews reported.

"Let's grab one, beat him up and take his weapon," one member urged, according to the outlet.

Hey guys, if we're going to protest, let's set fire to a government building,", another member suggested, per EuroNews. Others encouraged members to steal cars and rob businesses, including a Gucci store.

Using information from the group chat, police executed over 150 searches spanning multiple Italian provinces, according to EuroNews. Law enforcement discovered multiple knives, a hatchet with "1312" engraved — the numerical rendering of "ACAB," an acronym meaning "all cops are bastards" — knuckledusters, a baton and firearms. Siher continues to exercise his right to remain silent.

Two of the nation’s largest teachers unions spent hundreds of millions of dollars on political activism, lobbying and far-left advocacy groups over the last decade, according to a report from an education watchdog.

According to an investigation by the North American Values Institute (NAVI), a nonprofit watchdog that tracks ideological activism in education, the National Education Association (NEA) spent at least $547 million on political activity and advocacy between fiscal years 2016 and 2025. That total includes $458.9 million filed officially as political activity and lobbying, along with an additional $88.2 million in direct funding to progressive advocacy organizations.

When even the NYT says it about a Democrat...

    ------------------

The Times report, published Wednesday, cites 12 sources and references text messages and documents showing that Peltola campaign aides, the campaign’s lawyers and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) staffers were involved in pushing other candidates, including Daniel J. Sullivan, to run.

“The Alaskans for Mary campaign has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign. Like Mary, our campaign is focused on lowering costs and fixing the rigged system in DC. and did not recruit any candidates into the race,” the Peltola campaign said in a statement to The Hill.

The DSCC also told The Hill in a statement it had “no involvement” in recruiting the other Sullivan. Peltola's campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.

What Mary Peltola is a dirty trick but fair game in politics today. Certainly not criminal but Trump's knowledge of law is about the same as his knowledge of the bible. It is worth noting that with Rank Choice Voting (RCV) used in Alaska the trick becomes less effective. Voters can vote for both Dan Sullivans rnarking them 1 and 2 on the ballot.

    ----------------

    https://x.com/LoneStar_PAC/status/2115396085111755202

NEW: The New York Times reports that the story James talarico tells to explain why he decided to enter politics — a story he has told potentially hundreds of times on the campaign trail over the years — is not true.

talarico often claims he taught 45 kids in one class period his first year as a teacher.

School records show otherwise. He never had more than 29 that year.

    It's another lie.

    --------

Documents from the Texas Education Agency indicate that the most students ever assigned to a class period that Mr. Talarico taught was 30, with most of his classes ranging from 22 to 27 students. In the interviews with Mr. Talarico's former students and colleagues, they recalled classrooms where every desk was occupied, but not crowding to the point where students were sitting on air conditioners.

Mr. Talarico's spokesman, JT Ennis, did not dispute the Texas class size records but said that Mr. Talarico had facilitated a reduction in his class size. He declined a request for an interview with Mr. Talarico.

"After having 45 students placed in his classroom, James worked with school administrators to redistribute students across classes and create the learning environment that his students deserved," Mr. Ennis said.

Teaching 29 documented kids and 16 undocumented kids was exhausting and he was underpaid, that's why we need more undocumented kids and to pay teachers more. Undocumented kids are just a talented and just as intelligent as real kids.

The story is a repeat from one obama told.

        RNC Research

        @RNCResearch
Talarico in 2026: "I had 45 students in one classroom. There weren't enough desks...so I had students sitting on the air conditioning unit."

Obama in 2012: "She might have 45 students in a class. They don't have enough desks, so they've got some kids sitting on the floor."

I am a proud and loyal Democrat. I served in President Clinton’s National Security Council and worked for Madeleine Albright at the State Department. I ran for Congress as a Democrat, have voted Democratic all my life, and expect to continue doing so.

But I would never vote for Abdul El-Sayed. In my judgment, he does not represent the values of our party or our nation. I urge my fellow patriotic Democrats in Michigan to leave the Senate line blank or vote for Republican Mike Rogers.

This is an exceptional case, and I do not make this recommendation lightly. We can support Democratic majorities nationally while refusing to support a candidate who violates our core values. Loyalty to our party should strengthen our principles, never require us to abandon them.

Does not matter. The issue of two Sullivam was already decided by the Alaska Supreme Court.

Yeah, they said fraud is ok as long as it favors the democrat.

It's good to have it out in the open. I doubt it will push Peltola behind Dan S. Sullivan it will likely have her go below 50% on the first round.

It's legal, but it does matter. It speaks to her character. If she is sleazy enough to do this, who else will she fuck over next? The people have a right to have this information broadcast as far and wide as possible as early as possible. Media of course sat on it until the last possible face-saving second because that the sort of twats they are.

  23. Fist of Etiquette   2 hours ago

...think not just Peltola, but also Vivek Ramaswamy's use of Amy Acton's mother in a nasty ad...

Some magazine, I forget which one, put out a video explaining to everyone that nasty political ads have always been a feature of American politics.

    1. Spiritus Mundi   2 hours ago

This was over the line!!!!! Using people's own family to speak against a candidate is too far!!!!!!

The differences between sex realism and gender realism, and what sex-realist feminists are actually fighting for.

The Overton window is going to shut again when the Dems take Congress, so talk about it while you can.

  26. mad.casual   2 hours ago

Gender-realism is the incorrect, reductive notion that “women are made solely to care for children” and the like.

Phbbbt. Feminists. Opposing the position that no one holds. Obviously, women weren't made to solely to care for children, our sandwiches aren't going to make themselves.

    Chicks in charge... again.

This is because of late-breaking allegations that Peltola's staffers tried to recruit candidates to run in the Senate race that could confuse voters into not voting for her opponent.

Try!!! They did. Stop trying to downplay what happened.

Afterall, this is the ONE time democrats tried to steal an election. And they got caught! And only stupid people would fall for it anyway! And who wants those people deciding the outcome of elections! Besides, it wasn't illegal. Just like harvesting mail-in ballots sent to dead people, duplicate voters, illegals registered to vote, people who moved out of the state, and homeless people isn't illegal. WHICH THE DEMOCRATS WOULD NEVER DO!!!!

    1. Spiritus Mundi   2 hours ago

Also, we at Reeeeeason still support ranked choice voting even though democrats have shown they can use it to cheat.

      1. Medulla Oblongata   1 hour ago

Due process! It doesn't mean what leftists thinks it means.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/appeals-court-sides-with-trump-on-indefinite-illegal-immigrant-detention-policy/ar-AA2fWZHt

An appeals court on Friday ruled the Trump administration can continue detaining certain illegal immigrants without giving them bond hearings while their immigration cases move through court.

The Friday ruling by the full 17-member 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was a major victory for President Donald Trump's immigration agenda. The majority ruled that the Fifth Amendment did not require bond hearings for three men who entered the United States unlawfully but were never legally admitted.

The men’s detention “presented no constitutional issues” that required their release, Wilson wrote. Judge Priscilla Richman, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, agreed with the result but not the majority’s legal reasoning. Seven judges dissented.

The men were protected by the Fifth Amendment, Wilson wrote. But because they had never been admitted to the United States, they were not entitled to extra hearings beyond those provided by Congress.

“Due process does not entitle them to additional proceedings beyond what Congress has provided before they may be detained pending removal,” Wilson wrote.

Hochul, for once, avoids going full fascist.

The chapter amendments were negotiated by the governor with the Senate and Assembly majority leaders and the legislation also will repeal a requirement for cannabis license holders to enter into labor peace agreements with unions.

"The bill, as passed, would create uncertainty in the industry by imposing a burdensome reporting requirement on applicants, and by creating a wage board that could raise costs for licensees and drive consumers to the illicit market," Hochul wrote in a memorandum explaining her decision to adjust the legislation. "This further amendment would preserve the repeal of the labor for peace agreement requirement in full, while removing the wage component of the bill."
