The Socialist Surge Revives Failed and Hateful Ideas

Socialism, totalitarianism, and bigotry find a receptive audience among the young and disillusioned.

Members of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) march with protest signs that say "Tax the Rich" and "Stop the Cuts." | Andrew Schwartz/SIPA/Newscom
(Andrew Schwartz/SIPA/Newscom)

Abdul El-Sayed's victory in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary battle is only the latest by candidates affiliated with or adjacent to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Unlike many of the openly socialist officeholders and political hopefuls gaining traction in the Democratic Party, El-Sayed claims to be a capitalist, but his positions are indistinguishable from those of the left-wing figures he campaigns with, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.), and podcaster Hasan Piker, who has aligned himself with both the Chinese government and Hamas.

As democratic socialists in general and the DSA in particular take over the Democratic Party, it's worth examining the positions they take, the enemies they pick, and who supports them to see what they have in store for us as they seek to remake the country.

Young, Credentialed, and Unhappy Recruits

At a time when trust in higher education is sliding among Americans, the socialist surge is largely a project of young college graduates. El-Sayed "eked out his victory by winning young voters and highly educated voters," finds a Washington Post analysis. That squares with a June Pew Research report that "Democrats who are White, younger or college-educated are more likely to view democratic socialists positively." Credentialed but relatively low-income people make up the core of DSA recruitment.

Political analyst Nate Silver writes that "the sweet spot for the DSA" is "voters with postgraduate degrees but lower-to-middle household incomes of $30K to $60K per year." Silver adds that "only 19 percent of Americans with bachelor's degrees or higher had household incomes of $60K or below. The DSA rate is around twice that." He puts this in the context of Peter Turchin's elite overproduction hypothesis which argues that the country's universities crank out too many credentialed graduates, with student loan debt attached to not-so-useful degrees, to be absorbed into the prestigious positions they believe they're entitled to. The result is disillusionment and a search for somebody or something to blame.

That blame is falling on capitalism, American and western civilization in general, and Israel and Jews (the line between the people and the only majority-Jewish nation is inherently fuzzy, and "antizionism" has become a cover for bigotry the way the pseudoscientific term "antisemitism" repackaged old-fashioned Jew-hatred in the 19th century).

Given that the rise of the DSA is likely rooted in disillusionment and resentment, it may be a losing proposition to point out that socialism's nostrums are nonsense. Still, we need to emphasize that free-market capitalism is good and contributes to liberty and prosperity while socialism does the opposite.

Free Markets Brought Us Prosperity. The New Radicals Support the Opposite

The share of the world's population in poverty plunged from 43.41 percent in 1990, when the communist bloc fell, to 10.4 percent in 2024, according to World Bank figures. Economist Deirdre McCloskey observed that such enrichment is due to "liberalism, in the free-market European sense."

But socialists inside and outside the DSA want to do away with the free exchange that brought us rising prosperity. The DSA envisions in its program "a future without capitalism" in which "food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren't for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities." This future, the DSA adds, requires no payments for rent, mortgage, insurance, or other bills.

"There are prices on housing, medicine, food, and energy because these goods are scarce and have alternative uses," responds the Cato Institute's Alex Nowrasteh. "In a free-market economy, workers produce those goods because they are paid to do so, the owners of firms organize production efficiently because their profits depend on it, and the owners of capital sell it to the most profitable firms. All that activity is guided by the incentives and information provided by prices."

Capitalism Brings Freedom, While Socialism Promotes Totalitarianism

Importantly, adds, Nowrasteh, "economic freedom and political freedom are correlated." As the Fraser Institute's Human Freedom Index 2025 points out, this is largely because "economic freedom decreases the dependence of individuals on government or other potential forces in society that would restrict liberty or attempt to centralize power."

Once-prominent socialist economist Robert Heilbroner, who later abandoned the ideology, acknowledged in a 1978 Dissent article the totalitarian nature of socialism. He conceded "the difficulty that a socialist culture will experience in accepting the tolerant political and perhaps social attitudes of bourgeois life." By contrast, he said, capitalism "celebrates, supports, encourages and breeds the idea of the primary importance of the individual" and upholds personal freedom.

Which is why the DSA's call to "replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress" sounds less like an interestingly naive take on democracy than a scheme to eliminate checks and balances on a government socialists aspire to control.

"In 2021, the DSA joined the São Paulo Forum, a communist-led international network," Jonathan Chait observed in The Atlantic in July. "It proclaimed its solidarity with Venezuela under the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, and with Cuba under that of the Castro brothers. The DSA now locates its vision of the ideal society in the world's most despotic regimes."

Socialists Revive Ancient Bigotry

DSA-aligned figures are not especially fond of the United States and its allies. It's not difficult to find comments like New York socialist congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier's quip: "I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me." But as a group, they especially despise the world's only majority-Jewish state.

Michigan's El-Sayed says he believes the Israeli government is as evil as the terrorist group Hamas, which launched the October 7 attacks, and calls it guilty of "apartheid" and "genocide." The DSA last year adopted a resolution denouncing Zionism (the belief that Jews have the right to establish and maintain Israel) as "a racist, imperialist, settler-colonial project" and made belief that "Israel has a right to defend itself" an offense punishable by expulsion from the organization. Hasan Piker* claimed and repeated that Hamas is "a thousand times better" than Israel. Colorado congressional candidate Melat Kiros declined to label as antisemitic a deadly firebombing attack on a Jewish rally in Boulder.

"As a Democratic member of Congress, I can attest that for a growing number of my colleagues, being anti-Israel has now become a nonnegotiable moral litmus test," warns Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D–N.J.) "History teaches us that antisemitism is never the endpoint of hatred."

It's as if the rising tide of modern radicals set out to revive some of the worst ideas of the past—socialism, totalitarianism, and bigotry—and combine them in the burnished turd of a modern political program for those disappointed with their lot in life. The ideas the movement peddles are ridiculous, hateful, and have proven themselves dangerous time and again. Yet they continue to find an audience.

*CORRECTION: This article originally misstated Hasan Piker's name.

"...the DSA's call to "replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress" sounds less like an interestingly naive take on democracy than a scheme to eliminate checks and balances on a government socialists aspire to control."

That is exactly the point. The intellectual Left has always been frustrated by how checks and balances prevent "experts" from dictating policy empowered by Democracy but free to ignore what the electorate wants.

    1. Bhagwad   2 months ago

But if these branches are subordinate to Congress, then there's a direct connection to the electorate, no? In fact, the criticism should be in the opposite direction - it would be *too* accountable to the electorate.

      1. Mickey Rat   2 months ago

Except socialist intellectuals also think the proles and plebs are too stupid and uneducated to know what they should want, so they will ignore the electorate if it disagrees with them.

      2. TrickyVic (old school)   2 months ago

Congress's approval rating tells you how bad of an idea that is.

        1. Bhagwad   2 months ago

It's one thing for people to talk about "Congress" as a body, but if you were to ask them how they feel about their personal representative for whom they voted, the answer would be different, since they voted for them!

A low approval of Congress is simply people bitching about the choices that other people have made.

          1. TrickyVic (old school)   2 months ago

""A low approval of Congress is simply people bitching about the choices that other people have made.""

I agree and often point that out myself, but democracy isn't about the one person you voted for.

      3. TrickyVic (old school)   2 months ago

        Here's what Co-pilot said

As of 2026, the U.S. Congress has an approval rating of approximately 18%, reflecting historically low public confidence.

Not a great place to place power.

In communism, only one party rules.

We still have two parties ruling. We don't become communist just because one party currently has greater influence than the other.

[...] We still have two parties ruling. We don't become communist just because one party currently has greater influence than the other.

How long do you think we'll still have two parties ruling if the DSA gets enough power to "replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress"?

              1. TrickyVic (old school)   2 months ago

If they are able to do that. Which I doubt. But sure, the DSA would love one party rule. The middle initial says so.

                1. charliehall   2 months ago

David Ben-Gurion never had one party rule. Neither did Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, or Shimon Peres. Neither did Ramsay MacDonald. Harold Wilson and James Callaghan had minority governments.

    1. Fu Manchu   2 months ago

Yeah it totally will work this time. It's been tried dozens of times, but they were all holding it wrong. We just need a more charismatic leader who will seize the means of production with a smile. As a bonus, we get to eat the rich. I hear they taste good slow roasted or smoked. And they'll be available at your neighborhood government run grocery store at below market price if you show your ID and wait in line for 8 hours.

The only places where democratic socialism really was tried were the UK and Israel. The rich in the UK had been devastated by WW2, and the Conservative Party was the party of the nobility and landed aristocracy. Its blowout loss in the 1945 election was well deserved.

Israel didn't have any rich people in 1948. A command economy was the only way to prevent mass starvation. Shimon Peres liberalized the economy in the 1980s, basically ending socialism, and the country was finally in a position to have an economy take off, especially after Yitzhak Rabin ended the expensive statist Settlement Enterprise. To the upset of many statists, Benjamin Netanyahu did not restart it.

    2. charliehall   2 months ago

Socialism in the UK and Israel was implemented by fervent anti-communists. And it worked well for decades in both countries. Learn some history before embarrassing yourself again.

So called 'health care' are the fault due to government and insane coverage of every little thing. When it was medical insurance , covering the emergency room unforeseen events. Then they thought, why not cover drugs, so now a third party pays for that.I can't get people to understand that the more hands the bill passes through the higher the cost.

    1. charliehall   2 months ago

A lot of drugs save money and save lives. Drugs for blood pressure, lipids, and diabetes have caused a spectacular drop in heart disease death rates compared to 60 years ago. Many cancers are now survivable because of drugs.

    "Free Markets Brought Us Prosperity".

Free market? Where? Maybe in toothpaste or sticky notes. There never was a free market and increasingly, our markets are manipulated through and through. People are raging because they are being sold a fable. If we are going to have a manipulated economy where winners are losers are engineered via arcane rules then the people demand that they get to engineer the rules in a more just way. It's not a complicated argument.

The best way to allow Socialists to take over and devolve into a Communist hell is to deny what is in front of you. If every time someone complains about rigged markets and inequality you mock them and call them Socialists and Communists then you will get exactly what you fear. Instead, if you dialogue with them like grown-ups, acknowledge that wealthy people and organized criminal syndicates are manipulating the market, then we might just get on the road to something better and more just.

"Colorado congressional candidate Melat Kiros declined to label as antisemitic a deadly firebombing attack on a Jewish rally in Boulder."

Get your facts straight. It wasn't a Jewish rally. It was a pro-Israel rally, pro genocide rally, if you will. There were plenty of non Jews attending who support the genocide, and many Jews who oppose it and would never voice support for what Israel is doing, even though Israel, with stunning presumption, claims to be carrying out the slaughter in the name of all Jews. To label the attack as 'antisemitic' is also wrong. The perpetrator shouted 'Free Palestine' while carrying out the attack. There's no evidence of any animus towards Semites. In fact, Palestinians themselves are Semites, and have been for as long as the Jews have been.

I think there are two things going on here. First, obviously, is to de-legitimize any criticism of Israel as intolerant bigotry. We can do this by simply ignoring the fact that there are large numbers of Jews who oppose Israel and its genocide. Second, is to convince American Jews that there is a rising tide of Jew hatred in the US and around the world. This bolsters the argument that Israel remains, I shit you not, the only safe haven for Jews on the planet.

Do you cry when you watch Triumph of the Will?

      1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Israel didn't exist when Triumph of the Will was made. Instead there was a British Colony named Palestine. Hitler tried to unload the German Jews onto Palestine, even offering money to Jews to relocate there. Unfortunately, the British were having none of it but the Nazis, collaborating with Germany's Zionists arrange the emigration of some 60,000 Jews to Palestine. You will be surprised to learn that Nazis hated Jews, but were quite keen on Israel, I think a sentiment that lives on today among Western crypto fascists like yourself.

When colleges teach that socialism is the best possible system and refuse to teach any of it's many failings, this is what you get.

Is it really any surprise that the people who were indoctrinated into socialism by colleges are the very ones that are supporting the socialists?

This has played out before in other countries where the young and dumb become the vanguard of the revolution only to be put against the wall once their strongman is given the power to give them whatever they want, and take everything they have.

    1. mtrueman   2 months ago

"This has played out before in other countries where the young and dumb become the vanguard of the revolution only to be put against the wall "

What other countries? In USSR It was young urbanites who carried out the orders of Stalin in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc. In Cambodia it was the even younger who were the mainstay of the Red Khmer. In China it was the young who fought and won against the Capitalist Roaders during the Cultural Revolution.

"When colleges teach that socialism is the best possible system and refuse to teach any of it's many failings, this is what you get."

This also sounds like bullshit. I suppose that in the economics department of most universities there are one or two committed socialists, but surely they are outnumbered by non socialist colleagues. In some departments, Gender or African studies, for example, there is likely to be a Socialist tilt to the faculty. I blame those who dismiss this fields as unworthy of attention. Mostly, judging from the comments here, Rightists. If Rightists can't or won't put an anti socialist spin on their understanding of Gender or African issues, they have only themselves to blame.

"food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren't for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities, requires no payments for rent, mortgage, insurance, or other bills."

So if these highly educated idiots actually thought about this at all, they might conclude that the problem is not with having to pay for these essentials but, rather, with having enough money to pay for them. Money is just a medium of exchange and, if they completely eliminate money as a token of "capitalism" they would have to immediately replace it with something else: vouchers, for example, which are just another name for "money!" And so it goes in the delusional world idealistic imagination.

    1. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

Followed immediately by a thriving black market in counterfeit vouchers and ration cards, likely of higher quality than the officially issued ones because they would be "for profit," and by a black market in food, drugs and luxury items.

    2. mtrueman   2 months ago

You are underestimating the resilience and ingenuity of human kind. Consider the following: Humans have been around for some 200,000 years and spread over the entire globe, all without the benefit of money.

" they would have to immediately replace it with something else"

David Graeber wrote a book about this. Debt: The First 5000 Years.
"Money, far from being a liberator, was often born from violence and the need to quantify human lives and relationships for administrative control. " He's an Anarchist, if you didn't know by now. Debt links communities closer together. Ancient Japanese kotowaza (proveb): 無料は最も高価です. (Free is the most expensive.) ie, Pay someone for something with money, and you can forget about them immediately. Take something from someone for free, and to maintain good social standing, you'll always have to be mindful of the transaction.

      1. JFree   2 months ago

David Graeber and Michael Hudson (wrote - ... and forgive them their debts: Lending, Foreclosure and Redemption – From Bronze Age Finance to the Jubilee Year) and Niall Ferguson bring completely divergent approaches to the history of money. So divergent that it is no wonder 'money' is not considered an appropriate subject for history but is for ideology.

Zionism (the belief that Jews have the right to establish and maintain Israel)

That is, as is always the case, a deliberately deceptive abortion of a sentence. Add the following - the right to establish and maintain Israel as an ethnosupremacist state. That is how it was created by Herzl and BenGurion and was most clearly expressed by Jabotinsky (in 1923) and the 2018 Nation-State Law. That is what probably 90%+ of Israeli Jews support. And what virtually all 'diaspora' Jews over a certain age will not admit publicly - even though that very framing of 'diaspora' (essential and necessary to Zionism) uses/stokes the antisemitic 'dual loyalty' tropes that long preceded Zionism.

Change the words in that sentence - Christians have the right to establish and maintain the Vatican or Buddhists have the right to establish and maintain Tibet - and its easy to see how stupid/deceitful this framing is.

    1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Norman Finkelstein, I think half jokingly, pooh poohs the idea of Zionism. He says that any Jew who claims to be a Zionist and has the price of a one way ticket to Israel at his disposal, but doesn't make the move, is not a Zionist. Instead they are Jewish Supremacists, a wording that doesn't sit well with most Americans. So disingenuousness aside, Zionist it is.

      1. JFree   2 months ago

Most Jews who emigrated to the US were Bundists not Zionists. In large part because the US as a 'creedal' nation allowed for immigrants to become American (unlike Eastern Europe). But that creed is also exemplified by the oath of naturalization - currently I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty - which dates back in one form or another to 1778 or 1795.

The Bundist notion was called doikeit (hereness) - Jews had the right to live in freedom and dignity wherever it was they stood [...] fight for freedom and safety in the places where they lived, in defiance of everyone who wanted them dead

That is very different - and cannot be reconciled - with notions where migration to somewhere else is the only exercise of that right - thereness or dortkeit which is what Zionism is based on.

    2. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

I don't care why the Jews bought property in Israel and then declared the Jewish State. Although I wish them well in their endeavor, it's none of my business. Every step of the way through the history of the Middle East Muslims have tried to destroy the Jewish State and failed. Whenever a lasting peace threatens to break out backed by rational agreements with other states in the region, the terrorists commit some atrocity to derail the peace. Israelis in general have nothing to gain from ongoing violence, and Muslims will settle for nothing less than the complete destruction of the Jewish state. As long as I am not required to subsidize Israel's defense with my taxes; and as long as our sons and daughters are not required to sacrifice their lives in the military defense of Israel, I have zero interest.

      1. damikesc   2 months ago

    1. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

Chinese socialism also killed a hundred million poor people - more of whatever was left to eat for the people who weren't purged. 1. RickAbrams   2 months ago

No, since the abandonment of Keynes and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, we have ceased to be a capital economy and have transitioned into Corruptionism where everything is monetized and drives all wealth upwards to Wall Street. Trump did not invent stealing from everyone, the repeal of Glass-Steagall just gave Wall Street so much unlimited cash that its power corrupted the entire system. Corruption destroys! This makes us ripe for a communist take-over.

  26. RickAbrams   2 months ago

The DSA has one thing right. The GOP has made the US Senate worst than a joke. Rather than protect the republic from knaves, fools and idiots, it has championed them and allow Trump to load up the federal government with the most hideously unqualified and stupid people. With the likes of Sen John Thune, who is a worse traitor than Benedict Arnold, we need no Senate.

    1. Marc St. Stephen   2 months ago

The GOP? Really? I believe it was the democrats who eliminated the Filibuster on appointments and the democrats who seriously threaten the rest of the filibuster. Also, for sheer stupidity, the GOP can't hold a candle to the "winners" Biden put in place. Remember the one that was the worst example of a man in drag? How about the second worst example of a man in drag who handled radioactive materials and loved stealing clothing from other peoples suitcases? Remember the head of the military who disappeared for major surgery and didn't tell anyone? Meanwhile, the GOP has resisted eliminating the filibuster even when the democrats won't allow votes on 80/20 issues, like voter ID.

  27. Marc St. Stephen   2 months ago

If the Socialists/Communists win and the democrat party capitulates to them, as they have demonstrated to unfailingly do to the crazies in their party, and they start dismantling this great nation, I think it might be incumbent upon all us adults to start killing all those "young and disillusioned" voters.

I mean, if the constitution is destroyed, then all the laws of the nation would follow, so why not? You're going to take our hard earned wealth and property, then lets make sure they don't live to enjoy the short lived boost before we all descend into poverty and fealty to big brother.

In the land where people pretend the victim of Armed Robbery acting in Self-Defense is the "same, same" matter as the criminal?

That is perhaps the biggest BS the left sells and allows themselves to be indoctrinated with.

All be... There just might be a difference between Gov-Gun ARMED-THEFT and ensuring Liberty & Justice.

Selling Criminal Con-Artistry 101 is what the left does best.
You hear it everyday, "Oh poor me. The ?victim? of not being able to ROB someone else's paycheck."
"What little ensured Justice is left is so unfair and horrible."
Which is exactly how criminal minds work.

You pretend that shooting a Socialist who is using a 'Guns' to STEAL from you is on the same playing field as shooting one in self-defense. Reminds me of that BS where grandma went to prison for shooting an armed burglary who broke into her house.

A criminal sympathizing lawyer or a lawyer after Justice for all?
And that is precisely the BIG problem with US government today.

Criminals in a Just system hate Gov-Guns because they prevent their BS profession of STEALING from others and infringing their Liberty. We're not suppose to have a government where the Criminals LOVE Gov-Guns and the honorable people hate them. Socialists literally turn every government on it's head from defending Individual Liberty & Justice for all; into a Criminal Gang for hire.

                1. mtrueman   2 months ago

You'll want a lawyer to defend you. When you start shooting other humans, you'll find it's a serious crime and your Internet tough guy schtick won't impress the judge nearly as much as it does with with the MAGA stooges.

Cute... Quick! Change the goalpost from shooting an armed robber to just 'other humans' in general. Yeah; That'll save your pathetic crime-is-cool case. /s

Pretty sure that's exactly how the criminal leftards tried to paint the Kyle Rittenhouse case. So sad for you their 'aggressors are the victim' BS pitch didn't impress that judge. /s

Socialists are humans, like it or not. Pretending otherwise isn't going to impress that judge any more than your internet tough guy routine. And whining "I am the real victim here" isn't much of an improvement. Maybe it's your best option, tearfully weeping in front of the judge while begging for mercy. Worked for Rittenhouse, after all.
