Yesterday's promises: Just a day ago, the Iranian military warned that if Israel strikes southern Lebanon again, "much harsher and more crushing actions than before will be on the way" to its adversary.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

So Israel struck southern Lebanon again, directly testing Iran. Yesterday, at least nine people were killed in a strike near Tyre, in the south. The Israeli army has ordered people to evacuate Tyre, including those who live in the Christian quarter, which had formerly been somewhat more insulated from the bombings.

Hezbollah, which operates out of Lebanon but is distinct from the Lebanese government (unlike Hamas in Gaza, which is deeply enmeshed in the government), does not seem to want to be covered by a ceasefire deal.

"Hezbollah, for its part, has rejected any cease-fire with Israel, and has continued firing on Israel from its positions in southern Lebanon," notes The New York Times. Iran, meanwhile, has held Hezbollah up as necessary to cover in any sort of agreement.

Meanwhile, a U.S. helicopter—an Apache gunship—"went down near the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters," per a report from U.S. Central Command. The two crew members were rescued relatively quickly, and the cause is unknown.

Iran is trying to "impose a new equation"—according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—by firing at Israel in response to that country's attacks on the terrorist group Hezbollah, near Beirut. But, to Netanyahu, this equation is "unbearable and unacceptable." He made that much clear by striking Tyre again after Iran issued its warning.

The relationship between phones and fertility: "Did the introduction of the iPhone causally reduce fertility?" asks Brad Wilcox, researcher with the Institute for Family Studies, discussing a new paper examining "causal evidence from AT&T's 2007–2011 carrier monopoly" by Caitlin K. Myers and Ezekiel Hooper.

Takes abound (though it's hard to know how reliable the paper is, take it with grains of salt).

Maybe it's the dating apps:

A takeaway is phones turn dating into a second price auction but with counterparties that lack creditworthiness or performance requirements. @conorsen @Noahpinion @robinhanson

— Nick Walker (@nw3) June 8, 2026

Or maybe it's that phones are conduits for the porn:

Lots of people posting about this one. I want to draw your attention to one part of the paper: the argument that among other channels, the iPhone reduces fertility by increasing the availability of pornography as a substitute for sex.

I think it's probably a combination of factors, but I especially like the "false anthropology" point:

It's the phones.
It's the phones for a hundred reasons. Here are a few:
1) Male consumption of porn reduces marriage (for like 10 reasons)
2) Because of time-wasting college kids and 20-somethings just socialize less, reducing marriage.
3) The dating apps ruin dating (for 10… https://t.co/xXWxBv8MpF

QUICK HITS

  • Yes to everything David Bernstein is saying. I have never once considered the climate question:

  • "The Trump administration has drawn up a plan to surge US Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel to New York City, a move that threatens to escalate tensions with New York Governor Kathy Hochul over the president's migrant crackdown," reports Bloomberg. "President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, said Monday he'd warned Hochul of the surge before she signed a bill late last month curbing operations and banning masked ICE agents in her state."
  • Do Mormons count as Christians? The Defense Department seems to think no, Sen. Mike Lee (R–you already know which one) thinks yes (and is himself Mormon). The reason why it's relevant to the government at all? "This decrease in religious affiliation codes is not designed to make any claims on the legitimacy of any faith or religious belief, nor is it intended to provide a list of 'officially approved' religions," said the department. "Rather, it is designed to allow chaplains to quickly look at the religious composition of their units and determine how they structure resources to best provide for warfighters of all faith groups."
  • The votes are in: Nithya Raman is officially running against Karen Bass in the L.A. mayoral primary; Spencer Pratt is out.
  • OpenAI is trying to IPO, following in Anthropic's footsteps.

That Raman lost her district she governs and managed to win all of the ballot drops for days on end, with the former King County, WA head of elections running the LA elections? That she so unbelievably overperformed her election day results (even basically conceding that night) that it is mathematically impossible?

At least for all of Trumps' elections, there were signs he was overperfoming in Democratic-leaning areas as compared to Bush and Romney.

Rithya Naman never overperformed in liberal strongholds at all. Everyone and their cat was expecting Karen Bass to expand her lead with late mail-in ballots, possibly topping 40%.

If election day is today. Do you agree with laws that allow ballots to continue to be dropped and counted a week after today?

They never found the drug addicts sleeping in their cars close to the ballot drop stations with a box of ballots with RAMAN on them so she was able to climb into second a week later.

This is the election system you agree with? How could there be any fraud, there's no proof?

        @kylenabecker
        Let’s review. California:

        - Made it illegal to show voter IDs
        - Mass mail-in ballots across the state
        - Allows people to print ballots at home
        - Allows people to register anywhere in the state
        - Allows ballot harvesting
        - Allows people to register with “IDs” like gym memberships & insurance cards
        - Allows people to hand-date ballot envelopes, no postmark required
        - Has 853,000 + “ghost voters”
        - Sanctuary state that harbors illegal aliens
        - Refuses to turn over dirty voter rolls for verification
        - Refuses to allow independent signature verification audit
        - Refuses to allow ballot inspection audit

This isn’t exactly “subtle.” It’s a blueprint for stealing elections.

There is a fee written into the law for h1b, Trump increased it in order to prevent the h1b fraud.

Media and leftists are largely ignoring what the ruling actually said.

He ruled primarily on the APA, something scotus has already warned inferior judges against. He also ignored parts of the law and regulations that allow the executive to adjust fees, claiming intent for the executive was raising revenue, when it was always stated it was to eliminate fraud in the program.

      This will be overturned.

Voter laws, criminal justice, illegal migrant removal, balanced budget amendments, DOGE reviews every 2 years with the power to sunset programs in limbo or ineffective and cut spending, Fraud teams for every fed dollar given to states, and of course, Supremacy Clause teeth that ends states and local Sanctuary for illegals.

And it's not just illegals they let walk...

      https://pjnewsletter.com/convicted-run-cali-judge/

A 51-year-old man named Carl Cacconie was convicted of six felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts on an 11-year-old girl. Six counts. A child. A jury heard the evidence, weighed it, and delivered a guilty verdict. He faced 18 years in prison. And then Judge Michael McLaughlin — a registered Democrat appointed by Governor Jerry Brown — set bail at $1 million and let a convicted child predator walk out of the courthouse.

Cacconie posted bond. And he vanished.

His court-ordered ankle monitor, fitted by the El Dorado County Probation Department in 2023, went dark on August 17th on a street in San Francisco. His sentencing was scheduled for August 25th. When probation officers finally made contact two days after the monitor disconnected, Cacconie told them the device was “simply charging.” And they just took his word for it. They instructed him to report to a Bay Area office for inspection. He never did. The monitor never reconnected. On the day he was supposed to face sentencing, his family reported him missing.

Cacconie’s family claims he left a suicide note. Prosecutors aren’t buying it. They believe he’s alive, on the run, and likely receiving help.

El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson didn’t mince words: "To expect that a person on $1 million bond, who has now been convicted, that merely adding an ankle monitor, which can be easily cut off, adds any real assurance to bringing him back to court, it’s kind of folly. This is a county that prides itself on holding people accountable. And, unfortunately, that’s so far not what has happened.

A lot of fringe religions are simply to be lumped into Other Religions: Atheists, Asatru, Deists, Druids, Eckankar, Heathens, Humanists, Magick, New Age churches, Pagan, Rosicrucianism, Shaman, Spiritualists, Troth, Unitarian Universalists and various Wiccans.

      https://www.military.com/dod-officially-drops-180-faiths-from-militarys-recognized-religion-list

The reforms mark the first time the list has been officially revised since a memo was issued March 27, 2017, decreasing the total number of faiths from 211 to its new number of 31.

Can't hate the media enough. Sure, there's always been some white supremacist idiots who include Jews in the pile of people they hate, but antisemitism these days seems to be a stalwart mainstay of the left (e.g., queers for Palestine).

But then they go out and try to portray a few wack jobs like Massie as representative.

Perhaps it *is* noteworthy that this is a surge of unusual behavior from the right but that's not the framing.

People understandably wonder how antisemitism has managed to surge on the Right in recent years. Part of the answer may lie in the rise of conspiratorial thinking over the last decade. The two often go hand in hand, and elements of the former could facilitate the latter.

"A federal judge has ruled Trump's $100,000 H-1B visa fee is an unauthorized tax on businesses and must be vacated. "

I tried, as I often do, to go to the actual law that authorizes H1B, to see if the executive is called to lodge a fee. This is one of the most convoluted set of interconnected laws I've looked through (IANAL).

I've not seen any notion that a fee is authorized, so this may be one of the rare cases that won't get trashed on appeal. OTOH, just because I didn't see it in an hour of reading doesn't mean it's not there and this was just some activist judge imposing his vision. Might need to read the decision.

P.S. Not "Excellent". Employers LIE THEIR ASSES OFF to bring in foreign workers, and Reason staff would be up in arms if Reason decided to replace all the "editors" with H1B editors from India after claiming "no americans exist that can do this job".

Just for you, Dillinger, here's a link to yesterday's POTP podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBc_dKRkHF0

On there they discuss how after all Trump's bluster of "bridge and power plant day" he is now overlooking all of Iran and Israel's attacks. He looks weak for ignoring Iran's attacks and he looks like Netanyahu's lap dog for overlooking their warmongering.

Dave thinks Trump is compromised or defeated. Robbie has an interesting take that the Donnie-Bibi bickering is fake and Trump is coordinating this theater with Bibi to get some Iranian infrastructure taken out while appearing to still be wanting peace. Both takes make sense, but I have doubts that Trump is capable of intentionally looking weak to the world.

I think Dave is right. Trump is Epstein's Bibi's puppet or insanely weak to not stop Israel from messing up his "diplomacy", but I wouldn't be shocked to discovery it is really subterfuge. MAGA's better hope so.

Yes there's a ceasefire but IRGC has broken it multiple times and provided me with fresh terrorist targets.

5-10 years before that the church spent millions on advertising using the word Mormon. They produced a documentary and had a billboard in Time Square. There were “I am Mormon” commercials on tv.

I’m not trying to talk shit, but you do realize that doing a 180 on that word that quickly looks kind of silly. I’m sure plenty of devout Latter-day Saints would admit that.

Despite my criticism of them I consider them Christians. It’s in the name of their church.

Many evangelicals and conservative Christians don’t consider them Christian because they’re non-trinitarian or because their scriptures deviate from the Bible.

    Scenes from Belfast.

    Just keep bringing them in!

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/belfast-northern-ireland-stabbing-far-right-calls-anti-immigration-protests/

Video posted online shows a man straddling another man lying in a street and slashing him several times in the head and neck with a knife in what appears to have been an attempted beheading. Several people are seen intervening and tackling the perpetrator as police officers arrive.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) identified the suspect as a Sudanese man in his 30s, after initially saying he was believed to be Somali. The police said a kitchen knife was found at the scene.

The stabbing came a year after racially-motivated riots rocked Northern Ireland following a sexual assault, and a week after far-right led protests over the way police responded to a young white student who had been fatally stabbed by a British Sikh man in southern England.

    1) Many women claim that they want independence from men.
    2) Independence from men means that women no longer have to get married to men.
    3) Women control access to sex for men, inside and outside of marriage.
    4) Men no longer have to get married to access sex.
    5) Women can get pregnant whenever they want to and can avoid getting pregnant, whether they are married or not.
    6) If fertility rates are dropping, it has nothing to do with men and almost everything to do with womens' choices.
