Funding the immigration crackdown: Early this morning, the Senate passed a $70 billion immigration enforcement bill at the behest of Republicans and the White House. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R–Alaska) was the only Republican to join the Democrats and oppose the bill's passage.

"Passage came only after Republican leaders quelled an internal revolt that had been simmering for weeks over recent moves by Mr. Trump that have underscored how his personal agenda is diverging sharply from his party's political interests," reports The New York Times. "The divisions threatened to sink the measure and prompted several G.O.P. defections on bipartisan efforts to modify it, all of which failed in an hourslong series of back-to-back votes that stretched all day Thursday and into the predawn hours of Friday."

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

One such provision that failed to be removed was a ban on a $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" that would compensate people who can successfully make the case that the government mistreated them or wrongly targeted them. Now, libertarians could theoretically be very in favor of such a fund. (Great, civil asset forfeiture victims can finally get justice!) But nope: This is likely to be a means of paying out President Donald Trump's allies, some of whom were legitimately mistreated, others of whom weren't.

Another provision that's included in the legislation is an extra $1 billion in security for Trump's new ballroom construction project. But the largest chunk of money will go toward the president's deportation initiatives, funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol.

Throughout the existing deportation push, there has been very little attention paid to respecting the rights of citizens, providing humane conditions to those who are detained, and ensuring agents act legally and judiciously.

"Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal officers have killed at least three U.S. citizens (two in Minnesota and one in Texas), wounded numerous others, and detained hundreds illegally, usually after mistaking them for illegal migrants," writes Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy. "ProPublica found some 170 cases of illegal detention of citizens through October 2025. But that is almost certainly a severe underestimate.…Conditions in ICE detention facilities are often horrific, routinely featuring overcrowding, inadequate food and denial of essential medical treatment. Since the start of the present fiscal year in October, a record 29 people have died in ICE detention, even though the fiscal year is only about half over. The brutality and violations of civil liberties have been exacerbated by the administration's massive expansion of the number of ICE personnel (including hiring many poorly qualified people), and by its imposition of deportation quotas incentivizing arbitrary arrests with little or no proof. There have been so many illegal ICE detentions that courts have ruled against the administration in detention cases some 11,500 times, including thousands of decisions issued by Republican-appointed judges."

Of course, it's worth noting that though "the abuses of the deportation system have increased significantly thanks to Trump's policies," as Somin notes, "the system is cruel and unjust even under more conventional presidents." Many liberal critics have a hard time remembering that "illegal detention and deportation of U.S. citizens long predates Trump" and that bad practices by government agents are worth opposing no matter who's in charge.

More money for enforcement will most likely just enable more of the same, not hiring better agents or ensuring more careful practices.

Scenes from New York:

The rezoning of Gowanus, Brooklyn: pic.twitter.com/mpHiK26C8z

I was walking over there yesterday and noticed how different it looks compared to when I first moved to Brooklyn six years ago:

Gowanus rezoning & construction boom is wild pic.twitter.com/MPMbBi7DD6

— Liz Wolfe (@LizWolfeReason) June 5, 2026

In 2021, The New York City Council approved the rezoning of Gowanus, an industrial and not very built up neighborhood in central Brooklyn, to allow for much more residential construction to help alleviate housing cost pressures in the borough."By one recent count, there are 141 residential projects in development in Gowanus; all told, the 82-acre rezoning is slated to bring upward of 9,000 units—or 20,000 new residents—by 2035," reports The Architect's Newspaper. It's a massive success, though obviously ending the regime of rent control and rent stabilization would also free up housing units to enter the market (and alleviate rent pressures elsewhere). But we'll take what we can get.

The sharp decline in steel imports signals that the Trump administration’s Section 232 tariffs on foreign metals are “working as intended,” Brandon Farris, executive vice president of the Steel Manufacturers Association, said in an emailed statement. If Biden had not opened the floodgates, the costs might not be so high today.

One man can keep a neighborhood clean by walking around and picking up any litter tossed by a few thoughtless miscreants. Allow open dumping on the neighborhood streets for a few a few years, you'll need heavy equipment and multiple crews working overtime for months.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/opinion-campaign-autopsy-james-carville-gave-democrats-the-only-one-they-needed/ar-AA24V6Hm

That autopsy was provided by the crusty Democrat strategist, James Carville, who in late January 2025 likened the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris to a “seventh-string quarterback” playing in the Super Bowl.

Even more injurious was Harris’s unwillingness to acknowledge policy disagreements with Biden. In an appearance on ABC’s “The View” in October 2024, Harris was asked by Sunny Hostin whether she would “have done something differently” from the policies of Biden’s administration.

“There is not a thing that comes to mind,” Harris replied. The remark was troubling and suggested that a Harris administration would be an extension of the Biden’s unhappy term. Harris put it quite well in her own campaign memoir when she wrote, “I had no idea I had pulled the pin on a hand grenade.”

Similarly, Harris offered no effective response to illegal and unchecked immigration — a salient and perhaps decisive issue of the 2024 campaign. She was unable to rationalize or persuasively defend the Biden administration’s permissive policy that allowed millions of migrants to cross into the U.S. unlawfully and with little vetting.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/st-paul-city-attorney-drops-charges-against-cities-church-invaders-as-church-attorneys-blast-the-decision/ar-AA24RAIy

Kao stated that her office’s decision hinged upon balancing “equally important rights.”

“This decision should not be interpreted as an endorsement of unlawful behavior or public disorder,” Kao said in the same statement. “The right to peacefully protest is protected, as is the right to exercise one’s religious beliefs. Balancing these equally important rights is paramount to our decision today.”

Church attorneys from True North Legal blasted the city attorney’s decision, arguing that it demonstrated the law’s ability to “bend” with the politics of the powerful.

“The St. Paul City Attorney’s decision treats the church like it’s a public sidewalk—as if the sanctuary were an open forum that anyone may seize mid-service, rather than private property where a congregation has the right to worship undisturbed,” said Doug Wardlow, director of litigation for True North Legal, in a statement cited by the Daily Signal.

“By wrongly characterizing the invasion and takeover of a worship service as First Amendment-protected conduct, the city attorney’s office sends an unmistakable signal: The law will bend for those whose cause aligns with the politics of those in power,” he added.

Jonathan Parnell, the lead pastor of Cities Church, described how this decision could set a precedent for protestors entering other religious establishments.

“According to the St. Paul City Attorney’s logic, it is perfectly fine for agitators to invade a mosque, a cathedral, or a temple, intimidate the families and children inside, and shut down their religious gathering. Just call it a ‘protest,’” he said in an X post.

Democrats splintered over a resolution seeking to block the U.S. from assisting Israel's war against Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist group, on Thursday.

The measure, offered by progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., would require President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from Lebanon. For months, Israel and Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terrorist group and Iranian proxy, have been at war in southern Lebanon, but the United States has not joined the conflict.

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/democrats-split-over-tlaibs-lebanon-measure-republicans-seize-hezbollah-omission

This measure would have forced marines from the embassy in Beirut. Would have disallowed responses against hezbollah if they fired rockets at American bases or ships.

    And...

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., an Israel critic, was the lone Republican to support Tlaib's measure. Meanwhile, Reps. Derek Tran, D-Calif., and Betty McCollum, D-Minn., voted present.

A Virginia judge reaffirmed an injunction blocking the state’s “universal background check” law Wednesday, days after pro-Second Amendment groups sought to hold state officials in contempt when they started enforcing the measure.

Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed HB 1525 into law on April 22 after the General Assembly concurred with her amendments that added an emergency provision directing the Virginia State Police to enforce the law blocked by a permanent injunction issued in October 2025. Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave provided an update Wednesday about the organization’s request for a contempt citation.

The latest example of accusations against Jews becoming even more unhinged than the blood libels of the Middle Ages occurred on Sunday when a passenger on a New York City subway assaulted a Jewish woman. According to the Combat Antisemitism Movement, a black woman wearing a military-style camouflage coat with a patch depicting the German flag choked the 23-year-old Orthodox Jewish woman, threw her to the ground, and beat her. She managed to pull a patch of hair from the victim's head. The victim said she suffered a concussion.

But it was all for the children, you see.

Apparently, the assailant resorted to violence because she could “smell the babies” on her victim’s breath. That was irrefutable proof that “Jews are eating kids,” which is what she yelled on the packed train,

Police have arrested the son of actor James Handy’s girlfriend in his death after he was found stabbed in the chest in Los Angeles, law enforcement said Thursday.

Officers responded to a home Wednesday morning after a 911 caller said, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

They found the 81-year-old who appeared in films like “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick” in the front yard stabbed in the chest and unconscious, according to police. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Michael Gledhill, 44, who is Handy’s girlfriend’s son and lives at the home with his mother, told officers that he was the person they were looking for, according to police.

Gledhill was booked on suspicion of one count of murder, according to police. His bail was set at $2 million, according to jail records.

ProPublica found some 170 cases of illegal detention of citizens through October 2025.

Difficulty. Detentions are not actually illegal. Scotus has maintained up to 48 hours.

Imagine making this claim when citizens are held overnight all the time for crimes prior to seeing a judge, charges often dismissed.

This isnt illegal no matter how many times you misconstrue it.

And in many of these cases detention was an hour or two as they gathered evidence of residency. Something that happens literally all the time when police investigate crimes or claims of a crime.

Why push this ignorance? Why focus on 170 when you could make this claim daily in the US for non immigration examples?

Since the start of the present fiscal year in October, a record 29 people have died in ICE detention, even though the fiscal year is only about half over.

They died whole being given medical coverage. Based on the total numbers this is less than population death rates. Not one death has been shown to be due to the detention. In majority of cases they received better and quicker medical treatment than if they were not detained.

There's not enough of other people's money! Going to run out soon.

Seattle's tax-loving mayor has proposed a new tax on the residents of Emerald City, nearly doubling a sales tax to help pay for her lofty public transit goals. . 'The Seattle Transit Measure is one of the reasons why the bus is an irresistibly good way to get around Seattle,' Wilson said. 'Transportation is one of the biggest costs for most families, so these investments are essential to make our city more affordable so Seattleites can get to jobs, opportunities and each other without a car.' . , the city said. Around 22,000 free ORCA transit passes would also be handed out to lower-income residents across the ten-year-long measure, an increase of more than double the current amount, KOMO News reported. According to the city, the median two-person household would pay an additional $29 each year, totaling $58 up from the current $29 annual tax cost, the outlet reported. 'The Seattle Transit Measure bolsters transit service so our buses and streetcars run more frequently throughout the day and night,' SDOT Acting Director Angela Brady said on Tuesday. 'People need to get around at all times of the day, and not everyone works a 9-to-5 job.'

Does the proposal exclude imported goods being sold? If not Eric will be all over it.

Throughout the existing deportation push, there has been very little attention paid to respecting the rights of citizens, providing humane conditions to those who are detained, and ensuring agents act legally and judiciously.

Only under Trump could federal law enforcement act so arrogantly.

Conditions in ICE detention facilities are often horrific, routinely featuring overcrowding, inadequate food and denial of essential medical treatment.

Why would anyone even want to come here???

Or get paid to fly home and leave at any time.

It is well documented that immigrants in detention do not have the option of leaving anytime to be deported.

Republicans as normal stated publicly they did not like the slush fund then repeatably voted for it.

What were on the 3 plaques? When were they added? Why are 3 plaques necessary on anything?
