Surging Antisemitism Threatens Jews and America

Repackaged as “antizionism,” an ancient hatred poses a fundamental danger to us all.

In Santa Monica, California, last week, a Jewish couple was attacked by a man with a vicious dog and a baseball bat. Several weeks ago, synagogues and homes were vandalized with swastikas in New York City, and then a mob hostile to the Jewish state of Israel clashed with Jews outside a synagogue in Brooklyn. As disturbing as those incidents were, they paled in comparison to the fiery attack on a Michigan synagogue in April, the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers last May, and other violent crimes.

An Explosion of Antisemitism

These incidents come against a backdrop of revived antisemitism or—to give it its proper name—Jew-hatred around the world. In the United States, re-mainstreaming of Jew-hatred began among popular influencers like far-left Hasan Piker and far-right Nick Fuentes but is now spreading among regular Americans.

Few officeholders are as openly bigoted as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who constantly voices anti-Jewish and anti-Israel statements before walking them back. Increasingly, though, Jewish lawmakers complain of an "explosion of antisemitism" directed at them by the public, as recently reported by Axios's Andrew Solender. It's likely to get worse.

In April, Pew Research polling revealed that "60% of U.S. adults have an unfavorable view of Israel, up from 53% last year," particularly among Democrats and younger Americans.

Examining the Fall 2025 Yale Youth poll, Samuel J. Abrams and Steven M. Cohen of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) found that "respondents who opposed Israel's existence were far more likely to agree that Jews in the United States are more loyal to Israel than to America — a claim with a long and poisonous history. They were far more likely to support boycotting Jewish American-owned businesses in response to the war in Gaza, a form of collective punishment aimed explicitly at Jews as Jews. And they were far more likely to agree that Jews have too much power in American society, one of the most enduring antisemitic canards."

Antizionism Is Just Repackaged Hatred of Jews

Some of the revived animus against Jews is open and explicit, but much of it is barely camouflaged as "antizionism," implying hostility to Israel and not to all Jews. Apologists for this tactic point to a recent poll finding that only a minority of American Jews identify themselves as Zionist which, they claim, means attacking Israel isn't bigotry. But the same poll finds that 88 percent of Jews "believe Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish, democratic state," which is the definition of Zionism. As "Zionist" has become a slur, Jews have backed away from the word, but not from support for the world's sole majority-Jewish country and home for almost half of all Jews that it represents.

Or, as AEI's Abrams and Cohen concluded, "the claim that anti-Israel activism bears no relationship to antisemitism is no longer merely unconvincing. It is empirically false."

Attacking Zionists really is a proxy for attacking Jews, as if we couldn't guess that from the violence and vandalism directed at synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses. While every government is subject to criticism for its conduct, reframing hatred of Jews as exaggerated concern about the existence of a foreign state is a convenient way to tailor an ancient hatred for modern sensibilities.

"If we think about the core libels of antizionism today—colonizer, apartheid, and genocide—they're really just the inverse values of the moral codes of our time," says anthropologist Adam Louis-Klein. "They're not necessarily talking about Jews having big noses or controlling the banks. Some do, but they don't have to. So they say, 'Well, it's not antisemitic,' and their intuition is somewhat justified as long as we're associating antisemitism only with its older forms." He points out that "antisemitism" originated as a self-identifying term among Jew-haters meant to convert ancient bigotry into a racialized 19th-century ideology; the term "antizionism" again reinvents the same bigotry for the 21st century. That reframing has deep roots in efforts by totalitarian governments to reshape morality.

Totalitarian Roots and Foreign Funding

In an April report, the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) examined how totalitarians engage in "an inversion of morality, reframing tyranny as justice and evil as righteous action" to influence public opinion. "We focus in part on anti-Israel ideology, which played a central role in earlier anti-Western propaganda systems, including Soviet and Nazi campaigns, because the same narratives have reemerged today under the banner of antizionism. Appealing to the idea of universal human rights for its legitimacy, the current antizionist ideology presents itself as morally principled and anti-oppressive."

Many modern mouthpieces for Jew-hatred don't even disguise their totalitarian connections. Hasan Piker endorses communism and says, "China is probably the closest, I would say, to an example that we should follow." Nick Fuentes manages to simultaneously praise both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, reinforcing the fact that there's little point in differentiating among brands of totalitarianism.

Ironically, researchers find that much funding for antizionist (and anti-American) groups in the U.S. comes from Qatar and from a network linked to the Chinese Communist Party that's managed by Neville Singham, a wealthy socialist who made his money in the U.S. and then moved to Shanghai. So much for arguments by bigots who allege that Jews have divided loyalties between Israel and the U.S. At least Israel, like America, has open debate and elections. China and Qatar do not.

Revived Jew-Hatred Threatens American Individualism and Liberty

The reemergence of Jew-hatred is worrying for Jews, their friends, and their families, for obvious reasons. But revived collectivist animus toward a group should concern everybody. Historically, Jews have been an easy target for bigots, who change only the rhetoric they use to justify their actions. But once one group is vilified, it's easy to extend collective hatred to other groups that can be singled out for ill treatment. The bigotry that threatens Jews undermines the whole individualist liberal order.

Enemies of the United States recognize the threat. Western societies, as NCRI pointed out in April, are based on "principles and liberties enshrined by pluralistic, liberal democracies; among them, freedom of speech, equality under the law, tolerance of difference, individual rights and freedoms, the rule of law, and free, fair, and regular elections in a representative democracy." Reviving collective hatred and framing it as a righteous movement undermines the philosophical foundations of our freedom.

By whatever name, Jew-hatred is back. It's a threat to Jews, but it's also a danger to a liberal society and the values that underlie the free, individualistic American way of life.

    Now you notice?

    1. mad.casual   2 months ago

I hear a dishonest and divisive anti-American propagandist may've led a disruptive protest in a peaceful Church gathering in order to specifically subvert the 1A by turning the various rights it recognizes against each other.

But I suppose that's just a "creedal heritage" situation rather than a religious ethnostate situation, so fuck 'em.

    2. LIBtranslator   2 months ago

Rilly!! Tuccille Jr got what he voted for--instead of 25x the law-changing spoiler clout of a libertarian vote--and is now staggering in a haze of buyer's remorse wondering who happen? Why didn't voting for Christian Nazi coercion make Germerika free?

Amazing how electing a white Christian nationalist as president would lead to antisemitism.

Mr. Trump's daughter is married to a Jew.

        Worst. Anti-Zionist. Ever.

      2. MollyGodiva   2 months ago

Trump himself is a white Christian nationalist, not an anti-Semite. His MAGA followers are white Christian nationalists and many of them are anti-Semites. Trump enables white Christian nationalists.

"...His MAGA followers are white Christian nationalists and many of them are anti-Semites..."

Pulled that out of your ass, shitstain. Fuck off and die.

        2. James K. Polk   2 months ago

You are literally a lib of TikTok, spewing the exact same talking points that are cultivated there. Trump is not a Christian nationalist, he's just a regular nationalist. He is very much a non-practicing Christian.

And yes, Trump is white, as you no doubt are also. If you think that is disqualifying, maybe you should stop posting, or at least start every post with a race apology and maybe a land acknowledgement or two.

        3. Mickey Rat   2 months ago

How many people opposed to Trump are anti-semites?

How much has Trump been criticized on this werbsite for opposing anti-semitism, especially when it comes from the Left and supporters of Hamas and Iran?

      3. charliehall   2 months ago

So? It hasn't prevented Trump from spouting every kind of anti-Semitic meme imaginable, including the dual loyalty canard.

Oh and his other daughter is married to an Arab whose family has Hezbollah ties.

      4. LIBtranslator   2 months ago

Is this the same daughter who exposes daddy as a Christian National Socialist? Ever READ what the cloistered founder of nazi protestantism wrote about Jews?

    2. damikesc   2 months ago

Even odder how the anti-Semites are so vehemently anti-Trump, ain't it?

      1. Nelson   2 months ago

You mean like the torch-wielding neo-Nazis at the pro-Trump Unite the Right rally? You know, the ones chanting “Jews will not replace us”?

Historically, anti-Semitism has been more strongly supported on the hard right. Lately the hard left appears to be sad that they were late to the antisemitic hatefest party and have dived in with both feet.

That doesn’t make antisemitism a left-only thing. It also doesn’t make it a right-only thing. If you try to weaponize antisemitism against your political enemies, you aren’t supporting Jews, you are just using a convenient hot-button issue to push the same narratives you always have.

Antisemitism is an ugly and horrific part of American history. And because it is supported by both fringes of American political system, there won’t be the sort of reckoning that slavery faced when conservatives took defending slavery past the point of treason and into civil war.

There won’t be a side that supports progress vs. a side that supports tradition because the progressives and the reactionaries are on the same side, pushing hatred of Jews.

Antisemitism is evil. Whether it’s a right-wing militia, a Christian Nationalist religious group, a pro-Palestinian Muslim group, or a hard-left political group shouting “genocide” whenever Israel is mentioned, everyone needs to condemn it.

Don’t condemn Christian Nationalist antisemitism, but ignore progressive antisemitism. Don’t condemn pro-Palestinian antisemitism, but ignore militia antisemitism.

If you don’t condemn ALL antisemitism, you aren’t doing anything to fix the problem, you’re making it worse.

If you claim only one side of the political spectrum is antisemitic, you are lying. If you claim only one religion is antisemitic, you are lying. If you don’t condemn ALL antisemitism, you are just using Jews for your own purposes.

And fuck you for that, they are already getting enough shit from the hatemongers. They don’t need you doing “I condemn the 50% of antisemitism that comes from my political enemies” performative bullshit.

Either stand up to all antisemitism or please shut the fuck up.

    3. Thoritsu   2 months ago

Even more amazing that NONE of the rhetoric comes from the white nationalist (Christian if you insist), and it is the hypocritical, totalitarian left you support so ignorantly, who spawn all of it.

      1. Nelson   2 months ago

This is the nonsense I am talking about. The right has a rich and centuries-long history of antisemitism that continues to this day. You aren’t standing against antisemitism, you are using Jews as a pawn in your radical political war.

You are the problem if you only acknowledge the 50% of antisemitism that comes from your enemies. You are making things worse.

Both fringes are antisemitic. If you can’t admit that you are lying. And helping the hatemongers by apologizing for them.

        1. Thoritsu   2 months ago

Nice. Did you contribute to the idiotic "AntiRacism" book by dumbass, totalitarian, Ibram X. Kendi. "X" stands for ... whatever he says.

Junior, you do not get to assert that everything I said is invalid because people who agreed with me were flawed. Sorry. Grade zero in logic class.

          1. Nelson   2 months ago

I’m saying that you are wrong because there is ample evidence of antisemitism on the far right, which you ignore. You are trying to paint liberals as antisemitic and conservatives as not antisemitic because that is your tribe. It’s nonsense.

            1. Thoritsu   2 months ago

Show me the (modern) data, junior. I know ZERO antisemites, but a shit ton of conservatives. None of the conservatives care a bit what you do in bed either, as long as it doesn't force them to do anything.

              Your assertions are baseless.

              1. Nelson   2 months ago

The Unite the Right rally. Nick Fuentes. Tucker Carlson. Charlie Kirk. Richard Spencer. Patriot Front.

Is that enough for you, or do you need more? Those are all just in the last 10 years, so even a weasel-word like “modern” doesn’t get you out of those.

There has always been antisemitism on the right. If you can just admit your fringe has just as many virulent Jew-haters as those you perceive as your enemies, you will be well on the way to accepting reality.

      2. charliehall   2 months ago

Jews, Arabs and Semites all mean the same thing: people from the Eastern curve of the Mediterranean. Deep South Republicans means the same thing Deep South Democrats meant before JFK said something nice about the Ninth Amendment and some of the Reconstruction Amendments--people from the northward curve of the Gulf of Texaco. Superstition is the same thing wherever you find it.

"But the same poll finds that 88 percent of Jews 'believe Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish, democratic state,' which is the definition of Zionism."

This is confusing Zionism in theory vs. Zionism in actual practice. In actual practice, Zionism was implemented as a settler-colonial project (as admitted to in the mainstream press of the day), and with the help of Jewish terrorist groups, to kick out the indigenous population and take their land.

Now, in the year 2026, we see the Zionist state committing a genocide in Gaza, and are now proceeding to do the same in Lebanon. Israel has way too much influence over the American government, continuing to lead us into needless wars in the Middle East.

That is what Zionism actually is in practice. And that is what almost all anti-Zionists I know, many of them Jewish, are against.

    1. James K. Polk   2 months ago

This is nothing but idiotic talking points, regurgitated with no evidence of independent thought. Zionism is just Jews living in the historical state of Israel, without being subject to the occasional massacres that happened when under Arab rule.

There is no genocide in Gaza, and no genocide in Lebanon. The left simply redefined the word 'genocide' to include Israel defending itself.

      1. Thoritsu   2 months ago

        Indeed!

      2. scotterbee   2 months ago

"Zionism is just Jews living in the historical state of Israel, without being subject to the occasional massacres that happened when under Arab rule."

You left out the part where the US pays for everything. Israel is currently an artificially constructed state which is entirely dependent on foreign feelings and dollars for safety.

        1. Agammamon   2 months ago

          All states are artificially constructed.

            1. charliehall   2 months ago

None less than Israel. Jews ruled the land with approximately the current borders three thousand years ago.

        2. charliehall   2 months ago

You flunked 3rd grade arithmetic. Aid to Israel from the US mostly has to be spent in the US, and in any case it is a small part of the Israeli economy.

      3. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

Zionism is just Jews living in the historical state of Israel, without being subject to the occasional massacres that happened when under Arab rule.

Just as some people who say "From the River to the Sea..." mean it as a call to kill every Israeli, but others who say it mean it as a call for allowing every Palestinian to live free in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank---some people when saying they support Zionism or are Zionists mean what you put as the definition. Others, though, like Ben-Gvir, mean it as a statement of Jewish supremacy and a call for Israel to conquer the entire region.

So stop with the definition games. Judge people by what they say and do, not just the label they adopt or is forced on them.

        1. Social Justice is neither   2 months ago

Nobody defines Zionism the way you claim beyond insane Leftists and nobody who proclaims "from the river to the sea" means anything but kill all the Jews in Israel so stop lying you deranged Leftist.

          1. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

I gave you the example of Ben-Gvir.

Also, this is why this Reason comments section have declined so much. If someone isn't 100% on board with MAGA, people like you just resort to the retarded Sevo approach of just shouting "leftist," "antisemite," "Nazi," and the like. You are the woke, even if you can't realize it.

You guys don't even pretend to be libertarian anymore.

        2. Bloodaxe   2 months ago

Please, in Arabic, the line is "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be Arab." No freedom there.

      4. JFree   2 months ago

Zionism is just Jews living in the historical state of Israel, without being subject to the occasional massacres that happened when under Arab rule.

The massacres occurred in EUROPE - under nominally Christian rule. That is in fact why Ashkenazi DNA shows an extreme population bottleneck. Virtually all descended from 400 people (most men with Levant DNA, most women with European DNA) who survived medieval German pogroms/massacres.

Further Zionism is explicitly (though 'liberal Zionism' is publicly dishonest about that) about an ethnosupremacist majority with any minorities subordinated to second-class status. With any population that might risk a different majority to be expelled, cleansed, suppressed, killed, etc. That has been enacted into law in Israel. That 'ethnosupremacist majority with second-class minorities' is in fact why the 'Christian right' (who aren't really Christian either - though they are stupid) supports Israel so strongly.

Further further - the 'historical state of Israel' of 2000 years ago is as relevant today as Thrace, Nabatea, Qataban, Nazca, Kush, Cahokia, Panchala, etc. As early as the first American commission studying that post-WW1 area (publication of the report was suppressed) the assessment of that nonsense was For the initial claim, often submitted by Zionist representatives, that they have a “right” to Palestine, based on an occupation of two thousand years ago, can hardly be seriously considered.

        1. Nelson   2 months ago

While your point that the ancient state of Israel should have nothing to do with modern Israel is true, it’s also kinda meaningless. By that argument, Palestine doesn’t exist either.

At the end of the day the reason Palestinian land is being occupied is that Arab countries tried to destroy Israel (several times) and got their ass handed to them. Does Israel engage in brutal policies that are rightfully condemned by moderates? Absolutely.

But the Arab states took their shot. Several times. So the fact that Israel is just a wee bit paranoid that they face an existential threat isn’t really paranoia. Because the terrorists really are out to get them.

And there is no justification for Hamas and Hezbollah or any of their attacks on civilians. They are evil, pure and simple.

          1. JFree   2 months ago

By that argument, Palestine doesn’t exist either.

Who cares what it is called. The people born in Jerusalem should have more rights to determine their future in Jerusalem than those born in Brooklyn.

the reason Palestinian land is being occupied is that Arab countries tried to destroy Israel

No they didn't. You are just reciting myths and that tells me a lot about what bullshit you are fed. The 1948 war (where Israelis outnumbered the Arabs) was limited entirely to areas that were to be 'Arab' not attempting to 'destroy Israel'. Only 1973 may count as that - and that occurred AFTER Israel occupied Palestinian land in two different wars.

there is no justification for Hamas and Hezbollah or any of their attacks on civilians. They are evil, pure and simple.

Begin and Shamir and Sharon and Netanyahu were also terrorists who justified killing civilians. There are very few 'nice' people in a conflict and esp not 'leaders'. That includes Hamas and Hezbollah. You're not really advocating a whatabout civilian death log are you?

            1. Thoritsu   2 months ago

... and by any reasonable person's view, voted by infinite trips and migrations, NO ONE thinks we need more of Palestinian culture.

No one! Anyone arguing can move there, and fuck off, before, after, or with their hypocrisy.

            2. Nelson   2 months ago

“ The people born in Jerusalem should have more rights to determine their future in Jerusalem than those born in Brooklyn.”

That’s exactly what the “heritage Americans” say about themselves. It’s just as bigoted when talking about Jews and Israel as immigrants and America.

If you’re pissed because the European powers split up the world the way they wanted, get in line. The reason Israel exists is the same reason Kurdistan doesn’t: because colonial powers made it so.

              1. JFree   2 months ago

Understand what you are asserting. You are saying that no individual has a right to exist where they currently exist. You are in fact justifying ethnic cleansing and settlement land theft. Because of some bug you have about freedom of migration which most certainly does not exist in Israel.

If you’re pissed because the European powers split up the world the way they wanted, get in line.

Thomas Jefferson said I set out on this ground which I suppose to be self evident, that the earth belongs in usufruct to the living; that the dead have neither powers nor rights over it.

The Europeans who drew those borders are dead. Those who exert 2000 year old land claims - or bogus mythologies about Armageddon and the Rapture - are asserting rights from the dead. Only the living who are there can rightfully decide how they will determine their lives. Not the peanut gallery. Not bystanders or colonial powers or every global Karen. If they want to instead kill themselves - well not what I'd choose and certainly not what I (the living) will subsidize.

                1. Nelson   2 months ago

“ You are saying that no individual has a right to exist where they currently exist.”

I absolutely am not. Quite the opposite, in fact. Jews in Israel get to stay in their place, exactly like non-Jews. Your assertion is that israel shouldn’t (and, in fact, has no right) to exist. That’s false for a wide array of reasons.

“ Only the living who are there can rightfully decide how they will determine their lives.”

Well if you are going for a pure “nation of individuals” definition, Israel has even more of a right to exist. The Arab states tried repeatedly to destroy Israel and eject/massacre the Jews. They git their asses kicked, repeatedly. One of the attempts didn’t even last a week.

If you are motivated in your reasoning, you can find a myriad of reasons that Israel “shouldn’t” exist. If you look at everything, not just what you want to acknowledge, the overwhelming evidence is that it not only should, but deserves to exist.

That is absolutely NOT what Zionism is. That is the hard-left redefinition of Zionism that wingnuts try to sell to everyone.

The quote I grabbed is the policy of the Israeli government under Bibi Netanyahu, particularly as he has been forced to embrace the Ultra Orthodox parties to remain as PM. That is their price for their support. It is NOT the policy of all Israeli governments. It is not any part of Zionism.

“ we see the Zionist state committing a genocide in Gaza”

We do not. We see military excesses and a disregard for civilian life, but given the brutality of Hamas and their terrorist attacks, it isn’t surprising that Israelis struggle to repress their desire for vengeance. And exactly like Israeli atrocities don’t justify Hamas, terrorist attacks don’t justify vengeance.

But in no world is brutality the same as genocide.

“ Israel has way too much influence over the American government, continuing to lead us into needless wars in the Middle East.”

Israel’s influence waxes and wanes based on American interests. Our baseline is support for Israel because having a stable liberal democracy in the Middle East is a vital American interest.

The fact that Israel’ leaders, like most world leaders, has figured out how shallow and manipulable Donald Trump is and used it to advance their own interests isn’t an American thing, it’s a narcissistic President thing.

Israels’ influence isn’t some nefarious plot. It is because they provide what we, as a country, want: a stable democracy.

“ And that is what almost all anti-Zionists I know, many of them Jewish, are against”

I am against both the settler terrorism and the brutality of the Israeli war in Gaza. However, I believe that Israel has a right to exist. Israel should not be destroyed. Palestine should be free, but not from the river to the sea. Because that includes Israeli land and Palestinians have no claim to it.

Anti-Zionism means you believe the state of Israel should not exist. The answer to that position is “No”.

      1. JFree   2 months ago

Anti-Zionism means you believe the state of Israel should not exist.

The state of Israel that EXISTS is an ethnosupremacist state that only allows self-determination for Israeli Jews (meaning second-class citizenship of others is part of its essence); that will maintain that as a majority in order to remain putatively 'democratic'; purports to speak for all Jews around the world, to define what that means, and to view 'the diaspora' as 'in exile'; and views settlement as a 'national value' (meaning, in effect, that ethnic cleansing MUST occur). Those are all explicit law.

It does not mean Next year in Jerusalem or By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion

        1. Nelson   2 months ago

And? You’re saying Israel as a country doesn’t always do the right thing? Well, duh. No country does. I’m not claiming that Israel is always right, I’m saying Israel exists and should continue to exist.

    5. JFree   2 months ago

Not only that - there has been a lot of mythologizing among American Jews about what Zionism is in reality. Which is the reason there is now a huge generation gap among American Jews about Israel.

90% of Jews from Europe who emigrated, emigrated to the US NOT to Palestine. They were mostly Bundists - not Zionists. Bundists - following the motto - Here, where we live, is our country. That was killed off in Europe.

To the degree that American Jews became Zionists, most were cultural Zionists not political Zionists - which is still very distinguishable in a 1946 article - Is America Exile or Home?. At that time, American Jews outnumbered Jews in Palestine by 8:1 and yet political Zionists argued that American Jews had to urgently leave the US because threats of anti-semitism and only in Israel could Jews be safe because everyone else in the world is hostile. That form of Zionism also stokes (deliberately) the dual loyalty trope.

Cultural Zionism completely disappeared. After 1967 a form of triumphalism took hold where Israel is no longer beleaguered. After Rabin's assassination, Israel changed completely again. No more 'vegetarians' (Jabotinsky's term for liberal Zionists) - which is where the real generational disconnect is occurring.

    6. charliehall   2 months ago

"In actual practice, Zionism was implemented as a settler-colonial project "

If you object to settler colonialism, you either (1) have Native American ancestry, or (2) need to leave the United States and return to Europe, Africa, or Asia. Now. And don't post anymore here or anywhere else until you are gone.

  6. Thoritsu   2 months ago

Oct 7 demonstrated that the world should have no use for the culture (not people) of Gaza. That culture needs to be expunged like Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Humanity has no use for it.
If Israel wants to get rid of it, go right ahead. The rest of the world should look the other way, and bask in the peace that follows.

    1. Nelson   2 months ago

The problem is that the way Israel chooses to go about it creates the very problem they are supposedly trying to solve.

Israel is pursuing a “control through fear” model that will fail. Much like the MAGA movement in America, its extremist supporters delight in the cruelty and viscousness, but in the end it will destroy itself. The influence of the religious fanatics in the Israeli government are the source of the problem and getting rid of Bibi will help a LOT.

Religion in government, particularly extremist religion, always creates misery and suffering.

      1. Thoritsu   2 months ago

Uh huh. It will fail because a pile of useless dorks will inhibit the expansion of the simple value of the culture they (and you) will tolerate to live in. Absolute and total hypocrisy!

      What of it?

    3. Nelson   2 months ago

Oh, dear God. What a transparent red herring. Could you be any more dishonest?

Attacks on Jews are tracked because antisemitism, particularly violent antisemitism, has a long and disgusting history mot only in the US, but throughout the world.

There is no conspiracy to hide Jewish crimes. Tracking antisemitic attacks is easily justified by the violence Jews face merely for being Jews. If you want to find out about crimes perpetrated by Jews, I’m sure there is some data set somewhere that filters for religion and/or ethnicity (because Jewish isn’t only a religious designation, it is an ethnic category as well). Go find it if you really want to know.

The propaganda is that antisemitism is growing, but the reality is that more and more people are rethinking the free-pass that Israel has enjoyed since WWII.

There is zero doubt that Jewish people suffered atrocities during the holocaust in WWII.

There is zero doubt that the Israeli military has inflicted atrocities against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

After noticing the hypocrisy of the actions of the Israeli government, it is only natural to question all of the other acts of warmongering conducted by the Israeli military.

From Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, and now Iran, It's apparent that Israeli is at least partially to blame for the tensions and war. Then looking at the Israeli behavior in the West Bank with the settlers literally STEALING land from Palestinian and Christian people in the West Bank.

No, antisemitism is not growing, but skepticism about Israel and Zionism is growing.

    1. Agammamon   2 months ago

      >There is zero doubt that the Israeli military has inflicted atrocities against the Palestinian people in Gaza

There is 100 percent doubt about that.

I LOLed at "free-pass that Israel has enjoyed since WWII".

Like the "free-pass the Donbas has experienced since the fall of the Soviet Union".

I get and largely agree with not wanting to give them aid but "free-pass enjoyed since WWII"? WTF are you talking about?

        1. mtrueman   2 months ago

"free-pass enjoyed since WWII"? WTF are you talking about?"

Israel not being held to her promise to allow the resettlement of non-Jewish refugees as a condition of international recognition of statehood is one example. You may not be aware of this but there are Palestinian refugee camps dotted around the surrounding countries. They've long wanted Israel to live up to her commitments and let them exercise the right to return.

      2. Nelson   2 months ago

“ There is 100 percent doubt about that.”

No, Agammamon, there isn’t. That doesn’t mean that Gaza is a genocide, because it isn’t. But claiming that the Mi Lai massacre didn’t happen is an apt analogy to claiming Israelis haven’t committed atrocities in Gaza.

I live in NYC and I am aware of no private property seizures other than the usual eminent domain proceedings. In fact, property rights got a big boost recently by a huge relaxation of zoning laws that was staunchly opposed by every prominent Republican in the city. The private property seizures are Trump taking control of private businesses.

Are you saying anti-semites are not 'creedal Americans'?

  11. mtrueman   2 months ago

"By whatever name, Jew-hatred is back."

Isn't this inevitable? And baked into the recipe? With all the atrocities Israel has committed against her neighbors and own citizens, committed in the name of the Jewish State, no less, there are bound to be consequences among those who are revulsed by those actions.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that from the perspective of the Zionist Project, the world wide rise of anti-semitism is a good thing. Western Liberals for years legitimized the State of Israel as the only safe haven for Jews in the world, and besides, after the holocaust, we owed them a solid. Today, with Israel under a constant hail of missiles and drones, Israel is no longer the safe haven Liberals once claimed it was.

The solution is not for Israel to make peace with her neighbors and make Israel once again a safe haven for Jews, but instead increase aggression against the neighbors, and bump up the hatred for Jews outside Israel, making it once again 'safe' if only in a relative way. It sounds nuts, but Zionism is flailing and such acts of desperation are to be expected.

  12. mtrueman   2 months ago

" It's a threat to Jews, but it's also a danger to a liberal society and the values that underlie the free, individualistic American way of life."

But is it good for Israel? Is there a better way to convince Liberals that Israel, the world's only Jewish State, remains the only safe haven for Jews? Tuccille is doing his best here. Israel has not been in conflict with her neighbors for 80 years. There is no genocide, no apartheid, no land thieving, no missile or drone attacks. No, Israel is safe, and the real danger to Jews comes from Americans and the West where Jews have always been hated and that hatred is on the rise.

Find all this hard to swallow? Not surprising, but it's a testament to Zionism's desperation for international legitimacy.

  13. BLPoG   2 months ago

You know you could talk about the Tsarist propaganda that underlies much of modern antisemitic messaging, especially among moron libertarians, or the Soviet active measures that specifically sought to weaponize it in the Middle East, Europe, and the US, and which dishonest purportedly-former leftists like Rothbard couldn't ever let go - a real conspiracy ignored by the schizo crowd. Or you could just correct any of the errors in whatever latest drivel Matthew Petti managed to publish through Reason. Preferably you'd hop in a time machine and do it a few years ago, since it has no chance of making an impact now.

But instead you went for a milquetoast "yeah hey you know this is a problem guys, have you heard?" article that will not move the needle at all. To write something impactful you'd have to either discuss something comprehensive, which the idiots here will never read because the last book they read was in the fourth grade, or you'd have to thoroughly trash Thomas Massie for being a provable liar and possible stooge for international communism, which you won't do because (1) it hurts to acknowledge someone you once respected sucks and (2) the unwashed libertarian crowd will excoriate you for it.

It’s like some bat signal went out on the mainstream leftist media today to divert attention from Democrats private property seizures, assassins and rioters to antisemitism. Years after the second worse attack on Jews since the Holocaust.

    1. charliehall   2 months ago

It is Trump who is seizing private businesses, not Democrats. And it is Trump who is assassinating people (most of whom will not be lamented). It is Trump who pardoned over a thousand rioters, in addition to drug kingpins and money launderers. And it is Trump who has spouted more anti-Semitic memes than any President in history, and started a stupid war that has turned out to be catastrophic for Israel.

None of this was because of leftist media.

    2. mtrueman   2 months ago

"Just redefine any criticism of Israel or U.S. policy toward Israel as "antisemitism.":
It is brilliant. In one stroke it suppresses criticism of Israel while at the same time making American Jews more fearful of their safety and, the thinking goes, prime candidates for pulling up stakes and heading for the promised land where free health care, land and housing await, all paid for by the generous contributions of the US tax payer.

Norman Finkelstein has an interesting take on Zionism. He says if you've got enough money in your pocket to buy a one way ticket to Israel, and you still don't go, you're not a Zionist. Rather, at best, you're a Jewish Supremacist. At worst, a self-hating Jew, like our friend Norman. The Zionist Ideology, you see, was originally conceived as there's no future for Jews in the diaspora.

      1. James K. Polk   2 months ago

I guess that means you're somewhere between a Jewish supremacist and a self-hating Jew. That is brilliant.

"AEI's Abrams and Cohen concluded, "the claim that anti-Israel activism bears no relationship to antisemitism is no longer merely unconvincing. It is empirically false.""

    Jews are an ethno-religious group.
Israel is a nation-state that is largely populated by Jews, though not exclusively.
One can be Jewish, and not Israeli. One can be Israeli and not Jewish.

One can disapprove of an action and not disapprove of the person. For your garden-variety Christian, this looks like "Love the sinner, hate the sin."

I assert that one must be able to bestow criticism on any entity, in this case Israel, that chooses to:

    1) Murder refugees. Don't believe it? I've got a beautiful, clear photo of a Mk 80-series bomb right before it hits a Gaza refugee camp. Mk 80s don't come from Hamas or Hezbollah, but they do fit well on bomb racks that fit on F-16 Vipers (I'm not calling them 'Eagles'; it was lame name in the 70s and it's lame now). More than one account exists of IDF soldiers practicing their head shots on Palestinian children.

    2) Violate property rights by supporting and not preventing its citizens from stealing and destroying property of other Semitic peoples in the region. I have seen sooooo much video footage of Israeli settlers and soldiers committing both, and it is unjustified.

    3) Use well-documented acts of sexual violence as an institutional tool for creating fear and causing harm.

    The UN has weighed in:
“There is no escape from the conclusion that Israel has employed sexual and gender-based violence against Palestinians to terrorise [sic] them and perpetuate a system of oppression that undermines their right to self-determination.” - Navi Pillay, Chair of the Commission (UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel)

I cannot morally stand with those who would cheer on a 'most moral army', constituted in the form of the IDF, that supports child murder, that support the rape of prisoners in their custody, that supports bombing hospitals, that support a shameless land grab.

I do not choose to support Israel, though I acknowledge Israel's right to exist.
I condemn the state Israel for their chosen acts of cruelty and inhumanity, though I'm relatively certain every Jew in the world will have their own opinion on the matter.

People, like the author, can continue to conflate anti-Israeli messaging with antisemitism all they like. All it does, in a very intellectually dishonest manner, is force people into a false choice of 'either/or':
Either I give my support to Israel and celebrate the bigotry toward and the slaughter of other Semitic peoples,
OR, I give my support to bigots that hate a group of people that are Semitic.

If you're honest with yourself, you can elect to do neither.

If you made it this far, regardless of your position, be well and have the day your deserve.
