Ceasefire no more: Over the weekend, the U.S. and Iran exchanged strikes, making odds look even worse that a lasting ceasefire deal will be be here anytime in the near future.

The U.S. Central Command said, basically, that Iran started it, having shot down an American drone. Our military, it announced, "conducted self-defense strikes on Iranian radar and command and control sites for drones in Goruk, Iran and Qeshm Island this weekend."

These "measured and deliberate strikes occurred on Saturday and Sunday in response to aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters," added Central Command.

Meanwhile, Kuwait—home to some of our military bases—said earlier today that Iran had attacked its territory, but it gave few specifics. Iran, for its part, "said it targeted American soldiers in Kuwait with missiles, which the U.S. says it shot down," per the Associated Press.

At the same time, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has gotten more intense. The chances of a ceasefire—especially one that covers the whole region—look worse and worse.

"Talks to end the war have advanced in fits and bursts. Last week, officials familiar with the negotiations said that U.S. and Iranian negotiators had agreed on a document that had been sent to the two countries' leaders for approval," reports The New York Times. "President [Donald] Trump has pushed to toughen the terms of the deal, sending a revised document to Iran, according to three officials who spoke anonymously because they could not discuss the matter publicly."

There are ZERO international waters inside the Persian Gulf or the Strait of Hormuz.

Even though there are no international waters here, shipping cannot be legally blocked by any single country. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Strait of Hormuz and the waters connecting to it are classified as an international strait.

So the US is stating that - a)US military is an innocent party with no possible interpretation of threat and b)a simultaneous blockade of Iran is not an act of war, not a restriction on 'freedom of navigation', and not deemable as a threat to Iran's access to its own territorial waters.

You are correct to point out that there is no way the MQ-1 qualified as engaging in "transit passage" or "innocent passage" in this case. However, you fucked up your international law at least twice in the process.

1. The Strait of Hormuz is absol-fucking-loutely an international strait (or as both UNCLOS and the 1958 Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone prefer, "straits used for international navigation").

2. You don't have to be an UNCLOS party to enjoy the right to what UNCLOS calls "transit passage". UNCLOS explicitly grants the right to all ships and aircraft. Similarly, you do not have to be a party to the 1958 Convention to enjoy what it calls "innocent passage", because the convention explicitly grants the right to "all states".

(Incidentally, the US is very much a party to the 1958 Convention anyway.)

What? Of course there are international waters inside the Persian Gulf. International waters start 12 nautical miles from shore*, and the Persian Gulf is substantially wider than 24 nautical miles.

Yeah, there isn't anywhere in the Gulf that isn't in an exclusive economic zone. If you want to claim the MQ-1 was fishing or something, the EEZ might be relevant.

*Assuming you're accepting the definition originally codified in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Since neither Iran nor the US is a party to UNCLOS, one could make the case that the older three-mile limit applies.

Ceasefire no more:

There was never a chance of a ceasefire and certainly not a peace deal. No matter how much Trump knows that he was lied to by Netanyahu/Mossad re the war (and is vindictive about that), he is incapable of being anything but Charlie Brown when Lucy presents the football again.

On the bright side, the 2027 NDAA defense authorization now has a section (Section 224) that 'merges' the Israel and US militaries. Thus eliminating any serious Congressional oversight over anything (eg weapons going to Israel or military secrets being considered 'secret') and likely ensuring that future wars remain completely inside CinC authority and outside congressional 'declaration of war' or AUMF.

Interesting article. There is a non-zero chance that some of those zero day exploits are not human error, but intentional bugs introduced by deep state agents. EternalBlue was simply too useful to have been an accident.
