Back in business: Tensions appear to be mounting again between the U.S. and Iran.

Yesterday, Iran accused the U.S. of a "grave violation" after our military launched new strikes on missile sites and boats that were trying to place mines in southern Iran. U.S. Central Command characterized these actions as "self-defense"—merely an effort "to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces" but Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) disagreed: They fired at several U.S. drones and a fighter jet that entered their airspace.

The two countries had been on the verge of an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

"The U.S. military's Central Command said in an update Tuesday that the ongoing U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and vessels linked with the regime had turned around a total of 108 ships since it was implemented on April 13," reports CBS News. The blockade—implemented by President Donald Trump a few days after a very loose ceasefire was hammered out, due to the mid-April talks in Pakistan failing to produce an agreement with which he could be happy—has repeatedly been referred to by Iran as a violation of that agreement; the Strait of Hormuz, and whether ships are allowed passage through the major shipping corridor, has been a consistent point of disagreement and tension. (Central Command has clarified that U.S. forces "will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.")

The strait is, of course, where about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes through, so the blockades have resulted in soaring prices (and intense unpredictability) globally. Watch also for other weird supply chain disruptions and the knock-on effects they might have. Will disruptions in, say, fertilizer shipping affect crop yields? Reason readers don't need too much reminding on this front, but, you guys, war is bad on a lot of dimensions.

Key questions remain about what a durable peace deal would look like, including whether Iran would be allowed to maintain a nuclear program in any form. Trump also appears to be using the Abraham Accords—trying to get Qatar and Saudi Arabia to sign on, which would normalize ties with Israel—to get the Iran hawks within his administration to feel like they already have a win under their belt, to allow for more flexibility elsewhere.

Scenes from New York: "The mayor announced a new plan Tuesday to help rescue some of the most distressed rent-stabilized landlords. Eligible apartment owners will be able to charge a one-time rent increase on certain empty units, even if a rent freeze is enacted later this year," reports The Wall Street Journal. "The percentage increases would be determined on a case-by-case basis but could amount to hundreds of dollars a month in some cases." He's a classic communist: Handpicking winners and losers. ("The roughly 300,000 apartments financed through the city's housing agencies are potentially eligible for the rent increase once they are empty, along with other assistance," reports the Journal. It's government entanglement in real estate all the way down.)

QUICK HITS

  • "The Trump administration is moving to create a government-wide nondisclosure agreement for federal workers after a number of high-profile and unauthorized leaks in recent months," reports Bloomberg. "The proposal specifically mentions leaks related to the American military raid in Venezuela in January and planned enforcement actions by immigration agents in the US.…The draft says violators are subject to disciplinary action 'up to and including removal and debarment from future Federal employment or contractor status, and civil and criminal penalties.'" It's not clear how (or whether) this will actually be enforced, exactly.
  • "Under federal law, states must administer annual standardized tests in math and reading in grades three through eight. But several states have recently lowered the score a child needs to be deemed 'proficient,' producing big gains on paper without any change in the classroom," reports The New York Times. "Wisconsin redesigned its assessment, and English proficiency in the state increased to 48 percent from 39 percent. Illinois and Kansas have followed suit. In more than half of the states, proficiency rates on state reading tests now exceed the rates on national tests by 15 percentage points or more, and in some states the gap is much larger."

Under Gallagher’s legislative resolution, California’s 35 inland counties — covering most of Northern California, the Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley and the Inland Empire — would become a new state. Yuba and Sutter counties would be included.

The measure by Gallagher, who is currently running for Congress, will likely go nowhere in the Democrat-controlled state legislature. The votes by the two counties are also largely symbolic.

Tennessee Star digs into the ridiculous claims of judge who ended trial over Maryland Man for human trafficking. Judge ignored all the politics in Garlabd decision to kill a d delay prosecution. Ignores timeline on when these facts were discovered.

    Crenshaw’s Timeline: Thursday, April 17, 2025

“The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit denies the motion for a stay of the District of Maryland’s April 10, 2025 order.

HSI-Baltimore reopens its investigation into Abrego. Agent VanWie approves the reopening in a document titled “MS-13 Human Trafficking/Smuggling PG County.”

    Missing Information:

It was not until April 16, 2025, that The Star published its article that revealed the 2022 traffic stop involving THP and Abrego Garcia. Senior officials at DHS did not know of this incident until reporting from The Star, and have since argued that the facts uncovered in that reporting supported the reopening of the HSI-Baltimore investigation into Abrego Garcia that was closed 16 days earlier on April 1, 2025.

Crenshaw also did not note that a THP spokesman confirmed to The Star on April 17 that Abrego Garcia was released at the instruction of the “Biden-era FBI,” which was reported in the article, “Tennessee Highway Patrol Confirms ‘Biden-Era FBI’ Told Officers to Release Kilmar Abrego Garcia During 2022 Traffic Stop Despite Speeding and License Violations” (emphasis added):

tlanta's city government gave a Muslim activist group that raised money for Gaza a $35,000 donation on top of $250,000 in federal grants, a continuing investigation by The Center Square has found.
    ...
Each nonprofit signed a contract requiring them to submit detailed annual reports on how they spent the money, a combined $205,000. The Buckhead Public Safety Foundation ($100,000), the MLK-Ashby Merchants Association ($35,000), and the Cascade Business Association ($35,000) received the remainder.

The required spending reports could answer questions of how exactly nongovernmental organizations spent taxpayer money on public safety. But once the checks passed hands, the city apparently never followed up. The Center Square found no evidence the reports were ever collected – or that any city department was responsible for enforcing the requirement.

    Seize the means of accommodation!

Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani put bad landlords on notice Tuesday, pledging to help “transfer ownership” of chronically neglected buildings to tenants as part of his sprawling, new housing plan.

“When necessary we will take aggressive legal action to remove negligent owners and property managers,” he said to cheers as he unveiled his administration’s “Block by Block” plan in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Mamdani’s East Harlem grocery store site already got $25M in NYC taxpayer funds years ago — setting stage for $55M boondoggle

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to open a $30 million, city-owned grocery store in East Harlem is aimed for a site that was already approved for a $25 million public upgrade years ago – setting the stage for a bizarre boondoggle that has perplexed local business leaders, The Post has learned.

La Marqueta, the food-focused market between East 111th and East 119th Streets under the elevated Metro North tracks on Park Avenue – is where Mamdani last month proposed to open a government-owned supermarket. Unlike neighboring stores, the new grocer would be able to offer rock-bottom prices because it wouldn’t pay rent or taxes.

That same site, however, already won city approval from the city’s Economic Development Corporation nearly a decade ago for a $25 million project to redevelop La Marqueta – bringing the total price tag of the market’s proposed makeover to a staggering $55 million, city officials confirmed.

San Diego shooters motives running into intersectionality, and not just hatred for Muslims...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/they-attacked-a-mosque-they-also-hated-jews-but-the-san-diego-killers-had-another-target-nobody-is-talking-about/ar-AA248sOp

This may seem odd, given that the men attacked a mosque. And make no mistake, despite the men claiming in their manifesto that they didn’t hate Muslims, they were clear that they do hate Islam and they hate Muslim immigrants. And they were happy to slaughter them if it meant accelerating the white Christian war on everyone else. It’s notable, though, that the men characterized Muslims primarily as “bioweapons” of Jews (although the men used a slur in place of “Jews”). The central idea of the manifesto is one that will sound familiar to anyone who has even loosely read up on Great Replacement theory: White Westerners are being replaced with Black and brown outsiders in a nefarious plot to destroy Western civilization, and Jews are the all-powerful evildoers behind this plot.

    Building off Obama’s playbook:

Let's understand a few things about what's actually about to happen here if Zohran gets his way -- which he almost certainly will, unless courts intervene.

First and foremost, Cea Weaver and DSA 'organizers' will be unleashed with the full institutional and legal support of the city government to ramp up tenant complaints in targeted buildings. No complaint will be too small. No building will be too small. Everything will be treated as catastrophic. Full-scale demagoguery will ensue, complete with protests, rent strikes, street theater, and harassment of property owners.

Accordingly, the city buildings department will be weaponized to begin writing as many violations as possible in order to bolster the city's effort to justify a seizure. It won't matter how small or large the violations are, the total number will be breathlessly cited as evidence of mismanagement. It will be impossible for landlords to clear these violations in good faith.

The combination of a weaponized buildings department writing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, rent strikes, and constant threats and harassment against landlords by militant activists will make the situation untenable for any property owner to realistically fight back, and the city will seize the property. The landlord will be lucky to walk away without prison or being beaten to death in the street by an angry mob (as Zohran's buddy Hasan Piker referred to landlords -- 'let the streets run red with their capitalist blood').

But that's only the first half of the plan, and everyone needs to pay very close attention to the big picture here, because it's hugely important and has national implications.

The properties will then be turned over to nonprofits. This is no small detail. This is in fact the whole point.

The idea here is to build up Zohran's DSA-connected nonprofits with a multbillion-dollar portfolio of hard assets -- New York City real estate. This portfolio could theoretically reach into the hundreds of billions or even the trillions, depending on how aggressive they get.

Now these highly political nonprofits would become the new land barons of New York, complete with all the political clout, leverage, and reach that goes along with it. It would be a true nightmare scenario.

As it stands now, the nonprofits depend mostly on the largesse of grants, donations, and other third-party resources to stay afloat. They are lavishly funded of course, and many do hold significant assets, but it would all pale in comparison to simply handing them the keys to a New York City real estate empire, courtesy of Zohran Mamdani and the DSA.

The resources at their disposal would be immense. The organizing potential that goes along with those resources will have national implications. Every DSA candidate in every town and city in the country would be trained, funded, and staffed by organizers with ties to the NYC nonprofit empire backed by a trillion dollars in free real estate. And they would be shameless in leveraging those resources for pure political power.

That's the game plan here. That's the whole ball of wax.

Zohran isn't interested in making housing better for anyone. If he was, we'd be talking seriously about solving the NYCHA disaster.

Hell, if he was even remotely sincere about seizing these properties from 'bad landlords' for the 'public good' he'd be focused on turning them over to the city itself, as misguided as that would be.

No, this is about nothing more than consolidating political power for the DSA. Just like everything else these people do. Giving the DSA a massive war chest backed by seized real estate.

Once you understand that they have no interest in fixing anything other than elections, it all makes a lot more sense.

      Dekulakization.

Brian Thompson was only the beginning. Healthcare is a human right. Shelter is a human right. Voting is a human right. Food is a human right. The gatekeepers will be rooted out and destroyed.

TX-35 Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo says she will convert ICE detention center in Karnes County into an internment camp for "American Zionists."

"It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles, which will probably be most of the Zionists," she added.

It's been so surreal seeing the Cuties crowd suddenly start virtue signalling against pedophiles six months ago.

World's 'first openly gay imam' shot dead in South Africa

The 57-year-old cleric ran a mosque in Cape Town intended as a safe haven for gay and other marginalised Muslims. He was killed on Saturday morning after the car in which he was travelling near the southern city of Gqeberha was ambushed.

"Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle," police said in a statement.

New Conspiracy Just Dropped: Tick Bombs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that alpha-gal syndrome cases are on the rise in the United States. This is partly due to the expanding range of the lone star tick. Alpha-gal syndrome is associated with tick bites, can involve potentially life-threatening reactions to mammalian meat/products, and as many as 450,000 people in the U.S. may have been affected.
    - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “About Alpha-gal Syndrome,” CDC (January 5, 2026);

    - Julie M. Thompson, Ann Carpenter, Gilbert J. Kersh, Tyler Wachs, Scott P. Commins, and Johanna S. Salzer, 2023, “Geographic Distribution of Suspected Alpha-gal Syndrome Cases — United States, January 2017–December 2022,” MMWR. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report 72(30):815–820;

A 2025 Bioethics paper, “Beneficial Bloodsucking,” directly argues that tickborne alpha-gal syndrome could function as a “moral bioenhancer” if it makes people stop eating meat. The PubMed abstract says the authors argue that “promoting tickborne AGS” is strongly morally obligatory under their argument, and it discusses the feasibility of genetically editing ticks’ disease-carrying capacity.

UK judges love rape gangs or something...

    https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/gisele-pelicot-uk-rape-boys-37204440

Two girls were raped in two separate incidents in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, the first attack on November 26, 2024 and the second on January 17, 2025. In the first attack, a 15-year-old girl was raped by two of the boys, both aged 14 at the time and in the second attack two boys raped a 14-year-old girl and the other filmed, aged 14, the attack and encouraged the rape.

The three boys were given youth rehabilitation orders (YRO) instead of a custodial sentence, with the older pair also made subject to intensive supervision and surveillance (ISS).

Following the decision to keep the three young men out of prison, one of the two victims told the BBC it was like a "rock straight in my face". The girl, now 16, said she wanted the sentence for the boys to be changed, saying: "Why did I sit and put myself through the pain of going to court, going through a trial, reliving everything because of evidence and watching it all happen again?"

Explaining his sentence, he added: “I should avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily and understand the effects of their behaviour and support their reintegration into society.”

Oh, this make it all okay I guess...

      ------

The boys were also made subject to a three-month curfew and given a restraining order for 10 years not to contact their victims.
