Brickbat: Red Meat Issues

Amsterdam has banned advertisements for both meat and fossil fuels as part of its plan to fight climate change. Since May 1, ads for things such as burgers, gasoline-powered cars, airlines, and cruise vacations have been removed from billboards, tram stops, and metro stations across the city. City leaders say the goal is to help Amsterdam become carbon neutral by 2050.

Apparently they don't know that petroleum is the feedstock for plastic, fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, and a lot of other things, and that steel and their precious solar panels can't be made without coal. Someone should take them to court over this omission.

That would require politicians who know and are willing to be honest on how technology actually works, not how the activists wish it works.

The other way as well. More CO2 and warmth globally means the biosphere, even just within The Netherlands, will absorb and emit more carbon. If they're really going to get to carbon neutral, they've gotta get the bodies in the ground and the earth salted.

Can we even get to carbon neutral? There are two kinds of carbon based life forms on this planet. One takes carbon from the air, typically carbon dioxide, and produces energy, mass, and oxygen via a chemical process, often solar powered, like photosynthesis and the other takes carbon from other life forms, vegetable or animal, and through a chemical process that also uses oxygen from the air produces energy, mass, and carbon dioxide which is then used by the previously mentioned life form.
One would think that after decades of overproducing CO2, hereinafter referred to as plant food, and suddenly became "carbon neutral" the excess of plants would continue to exchange CO2 for O2 at similar rates leading to an excess of O2. Now while we won't mind an excess of O2 it might impact other O2 dependent creatures differently. Insects, for example are largely limited in size due to the current amount of O2 in the atmosphere and a greater concentration of O2 may simply lead to bigger bugs.
