The Art of the Presidential Health Cover-Up
Since long before Biden and Trump, presidents have been going to great lengths to keep their medical problems from the public.
When the St. Petersburg Times first launched PolitiFact in 2007, its purpose was to assess the veracity of statements made by "members of Congress, the president, cabinet secretaries, lobbyists, people who testify before Congress and anyone else who speaks up in Washington."
Fast forward to September 2025, and the trailblazing fact-checker has been reduced to informing us that "President Donald Trump is alive." Yes, and the sky is blue, and the day ends in y, even if some online randos may be memeing to the contrary.
The trivial episode of Trump's rumored demise illuminates what the future intersection of politics and information might look like. POTUSes and their handlers will go to fantastical lengths to lie about presidential health crises, history demonstrates; what changes over time is how they get away with it.
Grover Cleveland, for example, traded on his considerable reputation as "The Honest President" to not only deny the factual newspaper report that what had been billed as a four-day yachting vacation in 1893 was actually major oral surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on the roof of his mouth, but also to successfully disparage the reporter as a fabulist disgrace to journalism.
Edith Wilson, the Jill Biden of a century ago, cut off nearly all access to her husband Woodrow after his October 1919 stroke while he was president, making his final 17 months in office an unelected co-presidency at best. She and his complicit medical team (who took care to avoid the word stroke, preferring exhaustion) successfully pulled off a single, risky, stage-managed afternoon meeting with two suspicious senators, during which Woodrow Wilson's paralyzed side was covered by a blanket. The president was able to rally enough to mollify (if on a secondhand basis) the 100 or so reporters waiting downstairs.
Edith Wilson also helped arrange a glowing, Pulitzer Prize–winning New York World profile by Louis Seibold in June 1920, showing her husband to be a hale, active, and sharp-witted operator. It was, alas, a work of fiction.
How was Franklin Delano Roosevelt able to conceal his debilitating congestive heart failure, diagnosed in March 1944—an election year that he (unlike Wilson in 1920) was still competing in? For one, he and his team had had 23 years' worth of experience working with a mostly compliant and occasionally intimidated press to conceal and suppress visual evidence of his polio paralysis. For another, it was a war year, back long before our modern yearslong presidential election marathons. The actual campaign didn't really begin until late September, and the president did manage to propel himself through a few vigorous days on the hustings.
It also helped that FDR's personal physician, Vice Admiral Ross T. McIntire, was an extravagant liar. In January 1944 he insisted his boss "was in better health than at any time since he entered the White House," and then in the fall that "the president's health is perfectly OK. There are absolutely no organic difficulties at all."
That kind of carnielike bluster would have sounded antiquated to our ears a decade ago, but in the era of Trump-Biden-Trump it feels more like standard operating procedure. In 2017, Trump reportedly dictated to his own doctor that he use the phrase astonishingly excellent to describe his health; Biden, meanwhile, had a Jill Biden–organized phalanx around him at all times to wall off evidence of decline and trash the reputations of journalists and public servants who dared say out loud what two-thirds of Americans had no trouble seeing with their own eyes.
That latter cover-up, still astonishing to contemplate, suggests how future presidential infirmities will be scripted. Against a backdrop of artificial intelligence and the institutional collapse of the journalism industry, fakery no longer requires bribing or even bullying reporters, especially if they are inclined toward your side. Congress is considerably more pliant and less relevant than in past cover-ups (Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's, John F. Kennedy's Addison's disease, et al.), so institutional competition and same-side political rivalry barely register.
Perhaps the only meaningful remaining brake lies with the citizenry, which has no shortage of expressive outlets. Maybe there's a good reason for PolitiFact to fact-check Americans far outside the halls of professional political discourse: We might be the last ones left who still genuinely care about being lied to.

Wilson was a racist that passed the income tax and jailed people against a war the US should not have been in . All to make sure the US got paid back by France and Britain . FDR, stole every one's gold, had crops destroyed while people were hungry, Made a bad recession into a depression with his policies and gave away eastern Europe to 'Uncle Joe' Stalin. As for Biden, I doubt he made any decision on his own.
To be fair, much of FDR's deserved blame for prolonging and worsening the Great Depression belongs to Hoover, from whom he stole wholesale while blaming Hoover for doing nothing.
"...To be fair, much of FDR's deserved blame for prolonging and worsening the Great Depression belongs to Hoover,..."
To be fair, that's a huge pile of bullshit. Hoover *migh*t have done that; we don't know. But FDR DID do that and providing excuses for the worst POTUS in history suggests that you are an apologist for that lying asshole.
Sevo, Hoover actually did A LOT of what FDR ended up doing. FDR ran to the right of Hoover on spending. Hoover did not provide direct aid to the citizenry, but he did put in place a lot of the shit FDR supercharged.
In no rational universe could Hoover be called conservative. He was extremely different from my favorite President, Coolidge.
We should start a gang, ‘The Coolidge Kids’, and finally put those Van Buren Boys punks in their place.
Which I'm not denying.
You just did.
SGT can't read! Try again:
"Hoover did not provide direct aid to the citizenry, but he did put in place a lot of the shit FDR supercharged."
"In no rational universe could Hoover be called conservative. He was extremely different from my favorite President, Coolidge."
No denial.
To quote you yourself, that's a huge pile of bullshit. How short is your memory? I quoted your denial.
The truth about FDR's complicity in the Pearl Harbor attack and the real reason why Japan did so and other extenuating circumstances that have surface recently indicate FDR knew it was going to happen and when.
But then so did that drunken little pig Churchill.
I actually read a meticulously documented book on that subject around 20 years ago. Can't remember the author. Generated a bit of attention at the time and no one ever tried to dispute the facts as far as I know. FDR wanted that war and he made sure he got it.
Sure would like a cite. Not a single one of the hundreds of WWII books on the shelves makes anything like a convincing case for 'SDR wanted war'.
I'll see if I can find it.
Ha! Found it.
Day of Deceit, the truth about FDR and Pearl Harbor
By Robert B. Stinnert
Copyright 2000
It's on its way - THX.
No problem. I read it 20 years ago and just flipped through my copy. It's a bit of a slog to read but there's a mountain of evidence mostly from FOIAs from the 90s. Helps if you have some knowledge of 40s radio and military protocols which I don't.
If an enemy is going to attack they are going to find a way to attack. Especially when an adversary has the most power when you know they want to attack but haven’t attacked yet…so if they attack then on some level they are undermining their position because they expect a counterattack. So recently both Bush and Putin had the most leverage right before they invaded Iraq and Ukraine respectively….because in both instances their opponent was going to be greatly outmatched. But they invaded and then one’s opponent will never believe in diplomacy again and they will be forced to fight. I’m pretty sure Sun Tzu covered all of this millennia ago. 😉
FDR wanted to rescue Britain. He only got his wishes when Hitler declared war first. War with Japan was not his goal. If he had wanted to start war with Japan, and had known in advance of the Pearl Harbor attack, the simplest way to get that war would have been to intercept the Japanese fleet before the attack.
That conspiracy theory assumes FDR was both genius and stupid. It doesn't pass the smell test.
Read the book I referenced above.
I laid out a simple rebuttal. If you can't counter that in a paragraph or two; if it takes an entire book; then the proposition is too complex to pass muster. A book to back up the proposition is fine; a book to explain the proposition is nonsense.
He did though. The premise is FDR wanted to go to war but could not take America to it so his admin ignored the signs and allowed Pearl Harbour to get hit which opened the door for the US to enter the war against Japan.
You’re not one of these idiots that think we should have allied with the Nazis, are you?
"The truth about FDR's complicity in the Pearl Harbor attack..."
How many conspiracy theories do you carry around in that empty skull?
Lincoln could have prevented the Civil War…you just surrender quickly and not after 20 years like Trump did with the Taliban.
did you lose your soother?
I’m curious to see if he’s going full Tucker in this shit.
Are you really that ignorant? Have you been living in San Francisco so long you've fallen for that claptrap?
Wow really touched a nerve. The book referenced is serious piece with over a hundred pages of citations. Positive reviews by The Wall Street Journal, New York Times Book Review, Chicago Sun Times, among others. It's hardly a conspiracy tract. In any case I'm not emotionally invested in FDR or the theory. But I guess everyone else here is.
Yet its basic proposition is apparently so complex that you can't even begin to summarize it in a few paragraphs, and would rather appeal to various reviewers as authorities.
Simply replying to your claims that I am ignorant and that the book is claptrap. You could of course read the book and explain how you reached those conclusions but you'd rather just fling insults. And I do not now nor have I ever lived in San Francisco. If you want a summary you can find it on Amazon.
The worst thing that traitor Wilson did was sign the Federal Reserve Act.
Since then, the slavery of every American has continued to this day.
Worst thing JohnZ did was join the S/S. Fuck off Nazi shit.
The income tax had huge bipartisan support. The 16th Amendment had been proposed by Taft and ratified during his term, and passed by large majorities in a Congress in which Republicans had big majorities.
Everything you wrote about FDR is wrong. He put limits in agricultural production so that some farmers could survive economically. The Great Depression in rural America actually had started shortly after World War One. Harding's tariffs prevented it from ending and Hoover's even higher tariffs basically destroyed the entire rural economy to the point that the rule of law was collapsing. And the bottom of the Great Depression was in March 1933.
FDR did not give away Eastern Europe. Stalin took it, except for Yugoslavia which was taken by Tito's partisans, and Finland, which fought alongside Nazi Germany. The Allies could have immediately started a war with the USSR but given the balance of power then it is likely that all of western Europe would have ended up in Stalin's hands, and the Japanese genocidists would have remained in power indefinitely.
Comedy gold.
Why you can't have chicks in charge.
Not to leave the impression that I think Trump is too honest to lie, but the inclusion of Trump in this list of horribles seems pretty lame, pun intended; he's about the most public President in a long long time, and when he goes senile or can't walk up stairs or across a stage, the whole world will know.
That's it? That's all you got on Trump? Your TDS is showing, when the other cases involve Wilson's stroke and Biden's senility. Reagan may or may not have begun showing signs of senility while in office, I do not know, but that's a more serious accusation than Trump telling his doctor what to say, and yet Reagan gets only three words and not even a hint of when or severity.
Trump is a total GoBot. He’s almost always working, gives regular press conferences where he will take a long stream of questions and speak off the cuff for up to a couple hours at a time.
He shows more energy than Obama, who was over thirty years younger than Trump when he assumed office. That won’t last forever, but for now he puts most of his predecessors to shame.
You believe the shit you just posted? Quel fuckwit
Prove him wrong, oh wait you can't...
Here's a good start: https://www.google.com/search?q=trump+asleep
It's rumored that the entire New Deal was authored and implemented by a mysterious deep state actor known only as Otto P. When, in one of his fleeting moments of lucidity, FDR got wind of the plot he ordered an investigation by J Edgar Hoover. But anonymous persons in a position to know revealed that Hoover and Otto ended up sharing some intimate moments that included the exchange of lacy crotchless panties. The entire affair was quietly buried and lost to history. We can only wonder how our economy might have evolved differently had it not been for Mr. P. Would we be facing an Affordability crisis today? We may never know.
That would not surprise me in the least.
And....the war did not end the depression.
War production ended the depression.
It is amazing how stupid some commenters are here. It was indeed the war production that ended the depression. Isolationists inckuding the America First crowd opposed that.
"We may never know."
I am beginning to wonder more and more if alternate histories / parallel universes are the rule rather than the exception; the official history of anything seems less and less trustworthy these days.
"a mysterious deep state actor known only as Otto P."
Otto Penn has been still quite active in high-level government affairs and policies up to at least the previous administration.
Let's face it if Trump had a stroke he would brag about it being the best stroke recovery ever
He would. And it probably would be. The guy is a go bot.
"...In 2017, Trump reportedly dictated to his own doctor that he use the phrase astonishingly excellent to describe his health;..."
The article was supposedly about presidents with truly disabling illnesses getting the people around them to lie for them, and you come up with a bit of gossip about Trump?
Fuck you with a barb-wire-wrapped baseball bat, you steaming pile of TDS-addled lying shit.
Sad the extent to which these writers will go to just to signal their level of TDS.
Is this another, direction of leftist media ownership controlling the narrative of it's writers to ensure their opinion is forced despite facts and truth and must include hate to smear Trump?
Just a little over a year ago we were being told by EVERY media outlet that Biden was in better shape than his 20 y.o. aides. This ASTONISHING cover-up may have been led by President Jill and Vice President Hunter, but the cheerleading press, including this very publication, willingly participated.
Then the debate. LOfuckingL
This disastrous dereliction by the press has led to zero repercussions, and zero introspection. In fact in a show of hucksterism and gymnastic prowess on a P.T. Barnum scale, Jake Tapper has managed to capitalize on his complicity. Meanwhile the calf-eyed pundit class pretends this is fine, even as their readership leaps from the dog's carcass en mass.
Maybe you too can write a book about it Matt?
Cash in now, honey
Cash in, miss Smith
Cash in now, baby
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh

The Art of the Red Wedding 2.0 Against Conservative Journalists
- M. Welch
It helps promote his new Wedding Planner business.
So politicians lie and people in the orbit of power really want to stay there? Well get me to the fainting couch.
What I am really left to take away from this article is that the press is the enemy of the people. The only worthy function they serve is to speak truth to / about power. What you're telling me is every time a Democrat is in office, which is most of the time, they not only don't serve that function, they run cover for the powerful to the detriment of the nation. Yet I don't see the media mentioned anywhere in the title or subhead. Fascinating.
What do you expect from Mr. “Invite conservative journalists to a red wedding” Welch.
^^^^^
The history of the previous administration and that the main stream media did everything to cover up for Biden's senility remains one of the worst examples of the media presstitutes outright lying and deceiving America.
The MSM has disgraced itself in front of the American people and it shows. Other like Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson and even Candace Owens are picking up the slack and gaining millions of viewers while the toady MSM is losing millions. CNN is dead last, MSNBC is going to be cast adrift and the others are faring no better.
No one in the right mind should take anything the MSM says seriously and for that matter no one in their right mind should believe anything the government says either.
The further a nation drifts from the truth, the more it will despise those who speak it.
If only they were lying about a syphilis diagnosis or a wonky pair of legs that made it kind of hard to walk.
And you are one lf the people pushing the drift. Carlson and Owens are vile anti-Semites.
Democrats started it which makes it ok for Trump to do it.
That doesn’t really work here.
Has Trump done it? Matt’s article is thin on any details of actual medical issues.
Edit: I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried, should any real issue arise, but I don’t think the media would just roll over for his bullshit like they did for Biden.
People believe what they want to believe. There were reports in early 60s about JFK's poor health. There were reports in 1940s about FDR. We know now about these "coverups" because they were never completely covered up. Even back in Civil War times, this happened. Varina Davis actually signed government documents whenever Jeff was (frequently) laid up. Some Richmond papers reported this but were dismissed because they were "anti-Davis." Mary Lincoln's mental illness was known but any effect on Abe was largely swept under the rug.
Ideological bubbles aren't new, and many people have been guilty of seeking confirmation bias forever. But that doesn't change the fact that the disinterested / low-info public, which may well be a majority of the country, is misled when 90% of the media tells them one side's narrative.
I'm not a big fan of social media algorithms that feed everyone a constant stream of bullshit from crazies on all sides. But I suppose it's better than party talking points dictated by our media oligarchy.
And the Framers thought of this—it’s why we have a line of succession including one officeholder who has no power, the VP. Although I guess the Framers didn’t think of everything which is why we have a 25th Amendment.
I am not so sure that people believe what they want to believe, but rather people seem to follow the narrative set for them. We have no real idea what the actual state is of Trump's health, but he is successful in presenting the image that he is healthy. We see him golfing, but never actually walking more than to and from the cart. He has an ability to talk a lot without ever saying much of substance. He uses talking techniques, hyperbole and repetition, to give the impression he know something but this is not the case when the speech is analyzed for facts. The fact is little is know about the Presidents health other than he can not be as healthy as he claims to be, But the narrative set out is that his health is good and most people would not question those reports.
It's worth remembering that Franklin D. Roosevelt founded, with partner Basil O'Connor, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (better known as the March of Dimes). That was in 1938, during FDR's second term as president. So yes, he did as best he could to conceal the physical impairments left him by paralytic polio, and yes, he was aided in this by his personal physicians and the news media of the time. I say "physical impairments" because no one believed that his mental faculties were impaired, and they weren't until his last years in office.
I think I was in kindergarten when I began bringing dimes to school for placement on a sort of advent calendar card. We all contributed our dimes (OK, our moms' dimes) as often as we could, even though we had no idea who FDR had been or how the March of Dimes was organized as it was. Very soon, however, we all heard about Jonas Salk and the creation of the first effective polio vaccine. His work was funded by the NFIP, which among other things also paid for the support and care of polio survivors who had to remain in their Drinker respirators ("iron lungs") after the acute illness.
FDR used his personal experience, prestige, and influence to improve directly the lives of parents and children. He did this by initiating a broad-based effort to prevent and control the disease he suffered--and also concealed more or less successfully. I'd invite anyone here to tell us about another health-deceitful president who did or has done the same.
Biden pardoned Iranian criminals, weapons dealers and suspected terrorists before the auto pen was put in high gear.
He removed sanctions and gave the Iranian terrorist regime billions to fund their proxies and ultimately planned and paid for the October 7th murderous assault of Israelis.
Are you happy about how he helped the Iranian regime? Biden says he followed in FDR's footsteps.
Pelosi said Biden's face should be carved into Mt Rushmore.
Since long before Biden and Trump
Feel the bowf sidez flowing through you!
By the way, just so you know, what made the Biden coverup (that Reason never covered except to occasionally quip "Like what's up with all the old people in politics, maaan?" was so gobsmackingly horrendous is because unlike the 1940s that lacked pervasive media and continuous hour-by-hour on-camera presence of the executive on every screen in everyone's hands 24/7, the Biden administration and the media collaborated to keep what every forklift driver from Burbank to Buffalo knew from being uttered publicly.
Oh, not to mention the fact that FDRs disability consisted of the indignity of a wheel chair while his mental faculties remained keen, whereas Biden didn't know who was even alive or dead.
Hey, Reason New Yorkers, you got a young and dynamic mayor! That should help, right?
As soon as the opposition is exterminated.
Now where is he going to locate the gulags?
Staten Island.
And Trump, unlike Biden, is so senile that he doesn't even know whom he is pardoning.
Biden didn't even likely know that he was pardoning anyone in many cases. His administration's use of the autopen may be one of the most egregious abuses of presidential power in the entire history of the office.
You can think what you like about Trump, but most of his pardon signing happen live in front of reporters and television cameras, at least.
Several months ago it was revealed that Hunter Biden himself was involved with the pardons which makes them entirely worthless.
Then there's Otto Penn who was instrumental in the bogus pardons.
You can think what you like about Trump, but most of his pardon signing happen live in front of reporters and television cameras, at least.
Nope.
There was also the cover up of the severity of Eisenhower's heart attack.
Look, I'm not going to deep dive into the issue - all I know is that every time we've put a retard, gimp, homosexual, or dementia patient in office, the country ended up worse off for it.
Seriously. Think about it. Four worst American presidents: Wilson, FDR, Obama, Biden.
You forgot Lincoln. The war criminal and statist.
Nixon removed the gold standard.
Nixon, Trump...
Seems like a stretch to shoehorn Trump in there. Whatever his failings (he might have a few), lack of stamina and a diminishing of faculties doesn't seem to be one of them. No need to soften the blow to complicit Biden supporters. They know what they did.
