President Trump speaking in the Israeli parliament, Knesset | JALAA MAREY/UPI/Newscom
(JALAA MAREY/UPI/Newscom)

Good news out of the Middle East: It looks like this ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas may actually be holding.

So far, busloads of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners have started being unloaded in Ramallah, in the West Bank, satisfying the terms of the deal that has led Hamas to free all 20 remaining living hostages taken during the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. Hamas is still looking for the dead hostages, and it's unclear what exactly will happen if they can't fully satisfy the terms of the deal, which involves returning the remains of all those whom they've killed.

President Donald Trump addressed Israel's parliament, the Knesset, on Monday morning. This marks "not only the end of a war" but also "the end of the age of terror and death," the president said. He talked about the importance of stabilizing the Middle East, talked up how he believes Iran is ready to make a deal and come to the negotiating table, as well as his own withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. At times, he veered off track, in characteristic Trump fashion (characterizing his special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, as "Henry Kissinger who doesn't leak" and talking about the false promises made by Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama). "He's not the easiest guy to deal with," Trump said of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at one point, "but that's what makes him great." (He also amusingly told Isaac Herzog, Israel's president, to pardon Netanyahu for his bribery charges. Truly the king of digressions.)

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

"The state of Israel is strong and it will live and thrive forever," Trump said. "I'm proud to be the best friend that Israel has ever had in the White House," added Trump. ("They all say it!" he digressed right after, referring to past American presidents whom he kept routinely dunking on.)

"This city and this nation stand as living proof that a much brighter future for this entire region is truly within our grasp. For thousands of years, Jerusalem has been a home to Christians, Jews, Muslims, and people of all ethnicities and creeds. This is the holy center of the world. Three great Abrahamic faiths—I like that! That's the first time I've seen that word in a while!—adorned with their sacred sites and alive with their pilgrims and visitors from every corner of the globe. But here, between the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, and the hill called Calvary, people of every faith and background live, work, pray, serve, and raise their families side by side, and they do it with love. This example is just one of the modern miracles that Israel has given to the world."

"It has not been [easily won], it has been so tough," concluded Trump. "I love Israel, I'm with you all the way."

There are still open questions, of course, about how this all goes down. So far, the plan has been adhered to. But will Hamas agree to Netanyahu's disarmament terms? That's been a sticking point in past negotiations. And how will Gaza be governed in the future? Will some Israeli forces remain in the Gaza Strip to monitor the situation? These are the main things that must be sorted out, but the fact that so much progress was made over this critical initial 72-hour period—so much that Trump is before the Knesset declaring the war over—is huge for those who've been wishing for peace and stability for the region.

Scenes from New York: Luigi Mangione's lawyers are trying to make him ineligible for the death penalty by getting him brought up on lesser charges.

QUICK HITS

  • "Bari Weiss's greatest challenge [with leading CBS News] won't be any of the other things people are pointing out. As Editor-in-Chief, she'll need to support the production of a flagship evening newscast that can compete with 'ABC World News Tonight.' That's something many veteran, professional CBS News journalists haven't been able to do in more than two decades," writes Michael J. Socolow on Substack. "Why does this matter? It matters because these evening newscasts still generate 100s of millions in advertising revenue annually (big pharma loves them). Even back in the 1960s the evening newscasts were profit-centers for the networks—in 1965-1966, for example, Huntely-Brinkley earned $27 million, and the CBS Evening News made $25.5 million, making them the most-lucrative TV shows (the highest-billing) on U.S. TV."
  • …what?

On one hand: don't anthropomorphize AI. On the other: LLMs exhibit signs of gambling addiction.

The more autonomy they were given, the more risks the LLMs took. They exhibit gambler's fallacy, loss-chasing, illusion of control…

A cautionary note for using LLMs for investing. pic.twitter.com/WTnM2T1pAT

As in, all the college-educated "journalists" will deny that Trump had anything to do with it? Or craft a narrative that blames Trump for ending hostilities, since that will somehow be bad for Gaza.

Hamas troops gather at a hospital. Of course they are.

"...President Trump’s plans to use the Justice Department to seek revenge against his perceived enemies may have just hit a major roadblock. Earlier this month, Memphis federal district court judge Waverly D. Crenshaw, Jr. issued an opinion in the criminal case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia in response to a motion to dismiss for vindictive and selective prosecution.
The judge found “that the totality of events” surrounding the bringing of the Abrego indictment “creates a sufficient evidentiary basis to conclude that there is a ‘realistic likelihood of vindictiveness,’” entitling him to discovery and an evidentiary hearing before his motion is decided..."

Three great Abrahamic faiths—I like that!

Baruch Spinoza had a far more intelligent take on that in Tractatus Theologico-Politicus than a resident cheerleader!!! singing Kumbaya without singing Kumbaya.

There is no metaphysical revelation in the Abrahamic legacy. Everything about that election/'chosenness' is for worldly prosperity and political organization. The text is the constitution for either a theocracy (rule by God directly - the Abraham legacy) or a hierocratic (rule by priests - the Mosaic legacy) monarchy. God as the lawgiver and sovereign (which is unique to monotheism). Adhering to THAT is what brings political unity and stability. But that is literally NOT the basis for a religion itself. Post-temple Judaism itself understands that as the rabbinic tradition uses that text as the jumping off point for an oral tradition (which culminates in the Talmud). Not as some literalist fundamentalist text to be interpreted by any chimp who can read words but not understand them.

It wasn't even the origin of nationalism or tribalism. But Christian nationalists/tribalists 'took over' that tribalism. To become God's new favorite - via belief in Jesus and coopting prophecy - and in so doing rationalized anti-semitism. IDK what Islam actually believes - nor does Lupa Duranty here - but they are certainly tribal as hell and believe in theocracy and hierocracy. NO ONE has EVER argued for 'Abrahamic faiths' as anything that unifies. It is a reason for sectarian war. We are blessed. They are cursed. We are the chosen. They are not. Our destiny is sacred. Theirs is disposable.

Spinoza ends up in a far more intelligent (and libertarian) place. Where no religious institution has the right to impose itself on thought/speech/reason - or to claim authority over civil society/life.

According to reports via Israeli outlet Ynet, the violence erupted when Hamas militants raided the neighborhood of Sabra in Gaza City, home to a clan called Doghmush, also known as the Al Doghmush family militia.

The report said the Hamas Interior Ministry had accused a militia of attacking its forces, while members of the Doghmush clan said Hamas had exploited the ceasefire to target them over alleged cooperation with Israel.

"Children are screaming and dying, they are burning our houses," a relative of the clan told Ynet.

"We are trapped. I don’t know how they entered with all kinds of weapons. Where were they when the Jews were here? They arrested all the youths, lined them up against walls, pointed weapons at their heads. There is a massacre here," another member said.

In total, Ynet reported 52 members of the Doghmush clan were killed and 12 Hamas militants were killed.

Speaking of Baru, it seems that "representing" is simply insufficient.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/bari-weiss-at-cbs-news-isn-t-a-win-for-queer-journalists/ar-AA1OdlgJ

Bari Weiss at CBS News isn’t a win for queer journalists

Bari Weiss’s appointment as editor-in-chief of CBS News is being heralded by some as a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ media representation. She is the first openly gay person to lead the iconic network, and her visibility in such a prominent role, at least on paper, marks real progress.

    But I’m not applauding.

As an openly gay working journalist who covers LGBTQ+ issues, I’m not encouraged by this promotion. I speak with sources on a daily basis including transgender student organizers, queer civil rights leaders and LGBTQ+ academics. A consistent message emerges from those conversations: representation alone isn’t enough.

When a member of a marginalized community breaks barriers while also using their platform to cause injury to other community members, that’s not progress. In this case, Weiss’ identity as a lesbian doesn’t negate the harm she has done by amplifying voices hostile to trans people, giving oxygen to transphobic rhetoric and framing bigotry as reasoned dissent. In fact, it makes that damage more insidious.

Hamas plan was genocide all along.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/hamas-oct-7-memo-shows-meticulous-plan-to-end-the-children-of-israel/ar-AA1Ojtsb

Hamas Oct 7 memo shows meticulous plan to ‘end the children of Israel’

An Oct 7 memo written by the Hamas leader in Gaza instructed members to burn down entire neighbourhoods, stamp on soldiers’ heads and broadcast the attack to the world.

It was followed up with orders from Hamas commanders to “kill everyone you encounter” and “end the children of Israel”.

The six-page memo, found in a bunker by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was written in Arabic by Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader killed in Gaza in October last year.

Details were revealed in documents and intercepts discovered in Gaza and verified by the New York Times. They provide evidence that Hamas deliberately targeted civilians, contrary to their own claims throughout the two-year war with Israel.

It also shows how carefully planned the attack was, despite some asserting it was spontaneous.

It called for the fence separating Israel from Gaza to be bulldozed, and for combatants to “stomp on the heads of soldiers” as well as “opening fire on soldiers at point-blank range, slaughtering some of them with knives, blowing up tanks”.

“It needs to be affirmed to the unit commanders to undertake these actions intentionally, film them and broadcast images of them as fast as possible,” it stated.

“Two or three operations, in which an entire neighbourhood, kibbutz, or something similar will be burned, must be prepared,” the memo said.

Before the attack, a Hamas commander from Gaza City, known as Abu al-Baraa, told operatives near Kibbutz Sa’ad: “Document the scenes of horror, now, and broadcast them on TV channels to the whole world. Slaughter them. End the children of Israel.”

“Burn, burn. I want the whole kibbutz to be in flames,” a commander from a Gaza City battalion known as Abu Muhammed told subordinates around 10am on Oct 7 2023.

Another commander, Abu al-Abed, from the northern Gaza city of Jabaliya, said: “Set fire to anything.”

“Slit their throats. Slit them as you are trained,” a Hamas commander from a northern Gaza battalion told his men, according to an Israeli interception.

Another Hamas commander from a Jabaliya battalion, referred to as Abu Muath, told his fighters: “Kill everyone on the road. Kill everyone you encounter.”

“Guys, take a lot of hostages. Take a lot of hostages… It is essential that you bring the drone in so it films for the entire Islamic world,” he said.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/british-billionaire-cuts-off-funding-to-left-wing-groups-after-watchdog-exposes-553m-operation/ar-AA1OhEIW

Christopher Hohn, a British billionaire and hedge fund manager, is cutting off funding to left-wing groups and causes after a report by Americans for Public Trust (APT).

APT said in its report that the groups that received funding from the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), which lists Hohn as its founder and chair of board, "pushed for nothing less than the complete radicalization of the U.S. political landscape."

"Unfortunately, we are no longer confident in our understanding of the US policy environment for foreign funders of US NGOs, including for international work, which is our focus," CIFF wrote. "Consequently, CIFF’s Board have decided that, as a precautionary measure, and until applicable laws and rules, and the execution of them, are made clearer by relevant authorities, CIFF should redirect its funding to, and restructure its contracts to be with, non-US NGOs."

" President Trump is on the ballot in 2028"

    No. Just...no.

It's a fine joke and annoys Democrats, but there's no rational way it can happen, nor should it.

Trump will not run for president. It would require a constitutional amendment and that simply will not happen. But as others have noted he can absolutely run for any other office and even in his 80s he would not be particularly old compared to current office holders and SCOTUS. I personally would recommend he just enjoy retirement. But he's 5 years older than me and he can accomplish more in a day than I could in a week. Only a fool underestimates this guy.

I don't know if he'll run or not, but he will more than likely declare himself to be the winner, like he has in the last three elections.

I’d love to see him become Speaker of the House just to make your head explode, Sarc.

Will you look at that. Someone with less maturity than Sevo. Didn't think that was possible.

Someone with less maturity than Sevo.

Remember sarc still makes "I fucked your mother" comments. Self awareness has never been a strong suit for him, that's why he's incapable of applying to himself any standard he judges others by.

So maybe less maturity than Sevo, but still more than sarc.

Here Sarc is pretending that the mysterious 20 million voters who appeared out of nowhere at 3am in Nov 2020 and were never ever seen again were completely legitimate.

America suffered a coup in 2020, and is insufficiently mad about it.

      For the Sarc-tier educated:

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.

That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell.

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

... Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God."

      Poor Bannon.

You can always tell you're over target when you attract the most flak.
Labeling Israel as a snake has obviously attracted the MOSSAD flak guns....the brain washed Americans. Or maybe they are MOSSAD. I suspect AIPAC and the ADL is also involved.
I'll say it again....Israel is a venomous snake.

Only Sarc could identify his plight with that of the poor Jew haters. Sarc's the first guy in history to become a Nazi by being mad at internet gentiles.

Kinda like all those pregnant Democrats od'ing on Tylenol because Trump said don't take too much.

Ya know, losers, world-wide, claim they are 'held back' by those more successful.
They're not. They're where they are because they EARNED it! It's much easier to sit on your ass and whine about X, Y or Z than it is to get off your ass and make something happen. They've spent years earning their place as losers.
Hence: the loser Nazi asshole, JohnZ

I know Fatass Donnie is basking in the sun like the snake he is but what did he really accomplish?

A prisoner exchange at a 2000/20 ratio while the Islamic-fascists regroup their Intifada.

Let Fatass have his day. The ceasefire won’t last very long.

turd, the ass-clown of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
