Brickbat: Pay for the Privilege

In the United Kingdom, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is launching a plan to increase the amount private schools pay for required inspections by the government's Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services, and Skills. The government currently pays the majority—effectively two-thirds—of inspection expenses, but Phillipson argues that taxpayers who send their children to state schools should not have to subsidize what she calls "private businesses." The change could potentially triple the fees private schools pay for inspections.

If the Almighty State shall issue tattoos (bar codes?) to the private-schools tots (kids) to certify that they have been properly inspected, at great costs to the private schools, then the private-school owners should be able to do the exact same expensive things to the pubic-school tots! The Labour Party ideologically does not want private schooling to exist. Putting extra costs on such schools is a passive-aggressive way to accomplish that.

There's an alternative interpretation that's not passive-aggressive. The LP is instrumental in setting the standards that require these orgs making this a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation (just like teacher's unions in the US). A cat toying with a mouse isn't being passive-aggressive when it doesn't kill it outright. After all, without standards for private schooling, how is the state supposed to fail to vet Muslims and immigrants who weren't taught by the British school system that it's illegal to rape little girls?
