Trump's Ukraine Reversal

What just happened? President Donald Trump's greatest bug—or feature—might be his flightiness, coupled with a certain showmanship, a bit of flair. What holds one day may not hold the next. This results in chaotic whiplash, like with tariffs and "Liberation Day" rates that, in many cases, did not end up holding. It results in executive orders that make news cycles but don't actually change all that much, like this week's executive order classifying antifa a domestic terrorist group. It makes it hard for firms and individuals to plan ahead, to know what type of workers they'll be hiring and how expensive materials will be and what the law permits.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

In foreign policy, it means a longstanding approach might not in fact be so. Like Trump's reversal, yesterday afternoon, on Ukraine, following a meeting with that country's president:

"After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form," wrote the president on Truth Social:

"With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option. Why not? Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like 'a paper tiger.' When the people living in Moscow, and all of the Great Cities, Towns, and Districts all throughout Russia, find out what is really going on with this War, the fact that it's almost impossible for them to get Gasoline through the long lines that are being formed, and all of the other things that are taking place in their War Economy, where most of their money is being spent on fighting Ukraine, which has Great Spirit, and only getting better, Ukraine would be able to take back their Country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that! Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act. In any event, I wish both Countries well. We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them. Good luck to all!"

(Does Trump mean the February 2022 borders, before the current iteration of the war, or does he also mean the return of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014? It's not totally clear.)

It's possible this is a tactic to try to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table. It's possible it's a tactic to get NATO to step up its commitments—the timing of which would make sense, as NATO has been issuing forceful rebukes to Putin following Russian drones entering Polish airspace (and being shot down) and Russian fighter jets entering Estonian airspace two weeks ago and now drones over Copenhagen Airport yesterday that might be linked to Russia—and to take Article 5 more seriously. It's also possible, since it's Trump, that it's a genuine reversal of his own beliefs and his administration's approach, which would be quite a shift given Vice President J.D. Vance's aggressive tack taken with Volodymyr Zelenskyy back in February (described by Politico as "the stunning humiliation of Zelenskyy").

Then again, is it a true reversal? Trump said, back in March following the spat, that he's "not aligned with anybody." "I'm aligned with the United States of America," he added. The only commitment Trump is making now is the continuation of U.S. weapons support for NATO. It's possible Trump is trying to exert more influence over how NATO handles territorial incursions. It's possible Trump learned new information over the course of his meeting with Zelenskyy. But this might also be a somewhat toothless pronouncement from Trump, or, possibly, some sort of foreign-policy 4D chess move that will reveal itself prudent in time. With Trump, it's very hard to say.

Scenes from New York: "The Secret Service found and seized an illicit network of sophisticated equipment in the New York region that was capable of shutting down the cellular network as foreign leaders prepared to gather nearby for the annual U.N. General Assembly, the agency announced on Tuesday," reports The New York Times. "Officials said the anonymous communications network, which included more than 100,000 SIM cards and 300 servers, could interfere with emergency response services and could be used to conduct encrypted communication. One official said the network was capable of sending 30 million text messages per minute, anonymously. The official said the agency had never before seen such an extensive operation." The Secret Service is in charge of security for U.N. meetings held in New York. There's not yet information on a specific plot that had been planned to put these devices to use, but "initial analysis of the data on some of the SIM cards has identified ties to at least one foreign nation, as well as links to criminals already known to U.S. law enforcement officials, including cartel members." President Donald Trump has taken this and run with it, naturally. But there's also some early indicators coming out that the Secret Service is not being totally truthful here, so take it all with grains of salt.

QUICK HITS

  • "Three people were shot at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Dallas on Wednesday morning, ICE officials said," per The New York Times. "Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, said there were 'multiple injuries and fatalities' and the shooter was found dead of a 'self-inflicted gunshot wound.'"
  • "If over time, desistance becomes more common, 'that might be a good argument for why social transition at a young age should be done cautiously,' said Dr. Laura Edwards-Leeper, a psychologist who also worked at the Boston clinic and who has become a critic of what she sees as reckless approaches to youth transition," writes Jesse Singal, covering the findings of The TransYouth Project, the longitudinal effort to track children who transition genders very early in life. Singal reports that the study found that 18.4 percent of the early-transitioning children had not stuck to their new identity, either reverting to their birth sex or coming out as a category that's neither cisgender nor transgender. "Edwards-Leeper also noted that a nonbinary gender identity might just be a way station, of sorts, on the way toward some of these kids reidentifying with their birth sex. 'It might be easier for them to admit to themselves and everyone in their lives that they are JUST shifting to nonbinary, rather than back to cis—as a first step,' she said. 'This is definitely the way it often goes with transitioning from cis to trans—it feels safer to try out nonbinary first. I would suspect that some of those nonbinary kids will shift to cis as they get a bit older.'" Singal also grapples with social contagion as a very plausible explanation for why we've seen an explosion in youth transgender identification over the last decade, and critiques some researchers' inability to make sense of this.
  • In case you're interested in why there's lotsa GOD in this newsletter these days.
  • Inside Los Angeles' Tesla Diner: "Early visitors to the diner were greeted by robots, but on the day I came, none was to be found, disappointing the many, many people I heard ask about them. No roller skates, either. And although it is ostensibly a diner, it has no table service; this is more like a fast-food joint with higher prices and extra seating. The menu has also shrunk considerably since opening day: When I visited, the only options were a burger, a grilled-cheese sandwich, a tuna melt, a fried-chicken sandwich, a hot dog, chili, fries, and apple pie. Most of these dishes were served in a cute cardboard container made to look like a Cybertruck, and had been made fancier in ways nobody asked for," writes Ellen Cushing for The Atlantic.
  • "Trads believe women shouldn't work" is pretty much entirely made up by the haters, not endorsed by traditionalists themselves, points out New Hampshire woodsman/thinker Simon Sarris:

"trad" isn't even an anachronism, its just made up. Even ancient texts glorify wives working (as we see it).

more importantly there's a lot more to "work" than "do thing for someone else for money" which is strangely implicit in even trad assumptions https://t.co/Lmb3TPV66Y pic.twitter.com/qxamiAoTfA

    Sniper on ICE?

The shooting attack took place in Dallas, ICE acting Director Todd Lyons has said
A shooting attack at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas has left at least three people injured from possible sniper fire on Wednesday, the agency’s acting Director Todd Lyons has reported.

    - Pravda

No details on suspect, motive, or condition of the injured. Sniper reportedly dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. If so, perhaps next time that will be the first step.

Authorities identified the gunman in the sniper attack at the Dallas ICE facility as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.

Jahn was found dead from a self-inflicted wound on the roof of a nearby immigration attorney’s office.

The FBI has classified the shooting at the ICE detention facility in Dallas, #Texas, as targeted violence. The unspent shell casings were found, one of them had "Anti-ICE" written on it.

Background check shows Joshua Jahn’s now-deleted Facebook profile featured Antifa and communist imagery.

              - Live Leak

Multiple sources confirmed the identity. Not sure about the social media stuff.

I recall the liberation of a concentration camp where some of that occurred. It was a spur-of-the-moment activity and not well after the fact. I think in some cases the soldiers also let former camp inmates do the honor.

Disagreements over abutting territory contested for centuries ≠ globohomo. China and Russia still have (minor) land disputes. Iirc, they fought a few battles during the Cold War over land.

'Does Trump mean the February 2022 borders, before the current iteration of the war, or does he also mean the return of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014? It's not totally clear.'

Geez, what about borders before and after WWII--or WWI? Any notable changes in the 18th and 19th centuries? How about before that?

Look, "Ukraine" is a fucked-up place with a very long history of changing national and regional borders and allegiances, and tribal disagreements going back to the beginning of history. What would a libertarian strategy look like?

The Ukraine was a sovereign nation for only 2 years before conceding to the USSR. The Crimea was not historically Ukrainian. It was placed under Ukrainian authority after WW2 for half its army having collaborated with the Nazis.

I am a big fan of people being allowed self-determination when it comes to government. But that is far from what is happening in a region dominated by oligarchs.

Replace “Ukraine” with “Europe” in the last paragraph and we begin to recognize some of the underlying issues.

Ukraine is a bit different in that it hasn’t been an organized state for very long. America is kind of a young country on the international stage, but Ukraine wasn’t really a country until after World War I. And during the existence of the USSR, the Ukrainian Soviet wasn’t meaningful as an independent state because it was all dominated by Moscow. It’s not like there’s a very distinct ethnic difference between Ukrainians, Russians, and Belorussians either to help define regional borders.

That’s not to say younger states don't deserve to exist, but it extremely complicates any discussion about traditional or historical borders. Do we go back to the borders of 1600 and just Ukraine back to Poland? Or maybe the 1800 borders when Poland no longer existed and Ukraine was divided between Turkey and Russia?

        Agreed,

And in my simple analysis of human history, the longer people have inhabited a place with any forms of organized society, the more contentious and fucked-up that place will be. See: Middle East.

In this case, I think it's actually deliberate. Zelensky's been quite clear that he expects Russia to not only leave the areas they've captured, but Crimea as well. That stance is delusional, but being that vague is going to force the EUrocucks to sit down with Zelensky and actually determine what "going back to its original borders" means, and what they're willing to invest to pursue that goal.

Did you get hit on the head and suffer some sort of loss of cognitive, rational, and rhetorical function or are you some sort of Benjamin Button/'man out of time' freak who doesn't understand how causality and the flow of time work for the rest of the universe?

"Cave paintings show that women working was valued centuries ago." isn't an endorsement of any specific value set as much as it is a refutation of the modern idiocy of "Hard work is a value system created by the White Supremacist Patriarchy and gender-traitor women."

The ancient texts aren't right *because they're old* they're right relative to the false argument of the narrative's origin because they contain the predate the antagonists' message before the antagonists existed. Acknowledging the texts existed isn't an endorsement of anything or everything the texts advocate, it's a refutation of the underlying premise of the more modern argument from ignorance.

          Eratosthenes too.

          Also:

The ancients had only the books which they themselves wrote, but we have all their books and moreover all those which have been written from the beginning until our time.… Hence we are like a dwarf perched on the shoulders of a giant. The former sees further than the giant, not because of his own stature, but because of the stature of his bearer. Similarly, we [moderns] see more than the ancients, because our writings, modest as they are, are added to their great works. - William of Conches's

What Des-Cartes [sic] did was a good step. You have added much several ways, & especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants. - Sir Isaac Newton

It is true, though, however the way women worked in the past looks nothing like our current post-industrial-revolution model. Up until at around the mid 19th century, industry was primarily a domestic activity for all involved. Women (and children) worked alongside their husbands to produce the goods/services that represented the family's economic output - whether that was by hunting, gathering, farming, weaving, baking, brewing, etc. This model we have now is what is an aberration from the other 99.999999% of human history.

        Reuters:

        WHAT IS ANTIFA EXACTLY?
Antifa (short for "anti-fascist") is not an organized political group in the traditional sense. It is a decentralized movement without a clear structure, command hierarchy or leader, according to a 2020 Congressional Research Service report, opens new tab.
Some experts on political extremism, along with former FBI director Christopher Wray, have argued that antifa is better viewed as an anti-fascist, anti-white supremacy ideology than a cohesive entity. As such it would enjoy First Amendment free speech protection under the U.S. Constitution.
WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF THE MOVEMENT?
Antifa traces its roots to the anti-fascist movements in Europe in the early part of the 20th century. It gained further viability within the United States after Trump’s election in 2016.

It's actually not that difficult to trace because, again, they operate similar to ISIS or the KKK. Applying the same tools that Obama used to go after ISIS when he finally decided to take them seriously would degrade their networks pretty quickly.

If the feds actually want to find you, it's not terribly difficult. Antifa's OPSEC is better than the average shitlib posting on TikTok, but they still have people connected to their social media accounts and we all know how much the government monitors our communications now.

'"Trads believe women shouldn't work" is pretty much entirely made up by the haters, not endorsed by traditionalists themselves, points out New Hampshire woodsman/thinker Simon Sarris'

Particularly because everyone knows that all women except the idle rich had “careers” to feed the family.

One of my great-grandfathers spent most of the year as little better than a slave on a fishing boat, while my great-grandmother walked from the port deep into the countryside every day with a baby on her breast and a basket of fish on her head to sell. Later she worked in a cannery.

Another great-grandmother raised her children while working as a baker’s assistant, then became a cook for a wealthy couple high up in RCA. My grandfather was their valet.

Another raised her family while running a boarding house and cleaning government buildings at night, while her husband scraped by as a farm labourer.

My maternal grandmother grew up as a maid in the household her parents worked for. After marrying, she raised her children while working as a Woolworths shop girl.

My paternal grandmother left school at fourteen to become a dairymaid, then a waitress, then a janitor—finishing her “illustrious” career as a school board employee maintaining computers.

My mother raised us while working as a nurse.

So the whole “women weren’t allowed to work” line was nonsense. It applied only to the bored wives of the upper and upper-middle class. For everyone else, work was survival. Second-wave feminism was never about them. It was built to serve the interests of rich white women alone.

Yeah my grandparents were born in the late 19th century and everybody worked their asses off. And the women did it while making 5 or 6 or 7 or more babies living without central heat or AC or indoor plumbing. The older kids took care of the younger kids until mom and dad either dropped dead from exhaustion or their bodies were too wrecked to work anymore. They would see the jobs women do today as a permanent vacation.

One officer told Falter he was worried that the man’s “quite openly Jewish” appearance could provoke a reaction from the protesters, according to video posted by the campaign group. A second officer then told Falter he would be arrested if he refused to be escorted out of the area because he was “causing a breach of the peace.”

London’s Metropolitan Police Service on Friday afternoon apologized for the language the officer used in describing Falter’s appearance, but said counter demonstrators had to be aware “that their presence is provocative.”

The criticism is that one positive we all hoped for was that Trump would stop the incessant money pit of sending shit to Ukraine for a proxy war that has little bearing on us interests. If Trump backtracks, then he’s all for the proxy war continuing and he’s just furthering the deep state agenda.

Why can’t we ask for Trump to uphold the agenda he campaigned on?

The Asymmetric Zeno's Paradox of the various Detransitioning Turtles makes my brain hurt.

Gender is a spectrum that somehow includes meta-referenced poly-dimensional Mirrorgenders and Omnigenders and no progression or vectors or translational matrices between any of the various vertices, but detransitioning *might* include an infinitely discrete progression between 1 vigintillionth "cisgender" and 1.5 vigintillionth "cisgender".

If I have to identify as Bruce Banner/all-destroying-Gamma-irradiated-rage-monster dichotomy gender, won't that spoil the "Don't make me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry." effect for everyone involved?

The funniest part of Trump's UN speech yesterday was that if the passive-aggressive staffers hadn't decided to fuck with him by turning off the escalator and then his teleprompter, he would have given his 15-minute speech, walked off, and everyone would have forgotten about it 5 minutes later. Instead, they forced everyone to listen to him shittalk the UN and the EUrocucks for an hour, and now it's got media buzz.

Early indicators? One guy with a substack blog?

Here's Steve Forbes on Moonbeam's Choo- Choo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZewYWZO1Xd8
Wherein he points out that politicos LIE about budgets.
And he's an article by pre-woke Greenhut, with Willie mentioning the exact technique and how to use it:

    So I post a link.
Check an hour later, no link. Figure I didn't hit the 'Mother May I' button.
Try again; gone in an hour!
Does Willie have the goods on Google, or is Google a slimy pile of lefty shit?

Nothing says libertarian like a huge transfer of money to Argentina from the US Treasury…

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said a “large and forceful” intervention is on the table to support Argentina through a bout of severe market volatility, throwing a lifeline to libertarian President Javier Milei. In comments to reporters and on social media on Monday, Bessent said Washington was considering purchases of Argentina’s currency or sovereign debt by a fund controlled by the US Treasury,

I had a problem yesterday coming up with a good word to describe all the fucking morons who call themselves libertarian but really only believe in property rights to the exclusion of bodily autonomy, criminal justice reform, the rights to cross borders unfettered, etc., etc. but I think I’ve got it: Retard God, that’s a good word.

Speaking of retards, you might want to explain how the first part of the post relates to the second.

Your post awkwardly tries to connect Milei taking U.S. bailout money with a rant about “fake libertarians” in America, but really it’s just a flimsy excuse to sling insults at anyone who doesn’t match the your dubious and pliable definition of libertarianism.

It’s too bad for you guys that the benefits of Milei’s combination of free markets and free markets Catholic reactionary politics would be apparent, but apparently not. He needs a bailout at the expense of the American taxpayer. Awww!

Just like pure communism, pop-Austrian economic policy sounds good, but doesn’t work in practice. Oh well, they just didn’t do it right, I guess. If only they’d apply Murray Rothbard’s economic policies correctly someday they might get it right.

Reason's main line to date on Ukraine has been that any support for Ukraine against Russia represents an unacceptable risk of escalating the war and drawing us into yet another quagmire (what would this be? Number one-hundred and twenty-seven this century?) Aside from the fact that Russia has nothing left militarily with which to escalate their invasion of Ukraine except a nuclear exchange with the west, it's hard to see how equipping Ukraine with intelligence and weapons would embroil us any further than we're already involved. Getting Europe to take a bigger financial role in this would be a step in the right direction of course. But Putin has no particular reason yet to try to save face and withdraw, so stepping up Ukraine's military defense is really the only option unless we are cynically trying to maintain a perpetual stalemate to deplete Russia's military capabilities long-term.

As long as they can afford it, sell them whatever.

"unless we are cynically trying to maintain a perpetual stalemate to deplete Russia's military capabilities long-term."

That was the whole point from the get-go. Just ask Boris Johnson and Mitt Romney.

Russia produces 2-3x more ammo/shells per year than the entirety of NATO (US and Europe combined). At 25% of the per shell cost. NKor supplied them with 12 million shells - roughly 10 YEARS of NATO supply. THAT is the war of attrition that they are waging. A permanent 'preliminary' bombardment to soften up the enemy.

It is NATO that cannot respond. Nor can the US respond to the much higher tech stuff that Israel is draining because China will never again provide us with those raw materials.

Everyone always knew that the sole purpose of the MIC is to produce a profit - not a defense. Now we are finding that our imperial power - dependent entirely on a mercenary spirit rather than a national will - and permawars has emptied the cupboard.

"BREAKING: Would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh convicted on all charges"
    [...]
"Jurors on Tuesday delivered a guilty verdict for Ryan Routh on all charges after he attempted to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club last September.

After the verdict was read, Routh reportedly appeared to try to stab himself in the neck with a pen before four U.S. Marshals restrained him.
His daughter, Sara Routh, reportedly stood up and said:
"Don’t do anything. I will get you out. What the f---, f---, he didn’t hurt anybody. This is not fair. This is all rigged – you guys are a--holes." The jury was still in the room at the time..."

Regarding the Ukraine "reversal", a lot of times Trump repeats what he's most recently heard from someone else. He had just talked with the Ukraine ruler, who doubtless told him of all the troubles Russia was having (most of which were lies), so Trump repeated those to the press. You just have to get used to it without paying to much attention to it. He also said NATO should shoot down Russian jets who (allegedly) entered NATO airspace, without addressing if that would lead to global nuclear conflagration, because that question wasn't asked. The State Department and NATO afterward walked backed that comment.
