Democratic Party

David Hogg, Victim of Wokeness

No wonder the Democrats are having a young male voter problem!

David Hogg (Rolando Otero/TNS/Newscom)

David Hogg is a 25-year-old political activist and, for now, vice chair of the Democratic National Committee. A survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Hogg first drew national attention for speaking out vigorously in favor of gun control. He has since become an all-purpose progressive campaigner.

He is controversial, even among Democratic circles, because he has clashed with the party's establishment. He previously pledged to spend $20 million to primary members of his own party, though he insisted that he would only target Democrats who reside in safe districts. His thinking is that elected Democrats are too old and that the current iteration of the party fails to appeal to younger voters, particularly young males. Hogg is definitely onto something there: Donald Trump made huge inroads with Gen Z voters, in part because Democratic messaging to young men failed to resonate with them.

Hogg made a version of this argument on Bill Maher's show last weekend, and the comedian was impressed enough to give Hogg a standing ovation and shake his hand. Hogg also won over centrist Democratic strategist James Carville, who had previously called him a "twerp."

But Hogg has not won over everybody. On the contrary, the DNC is trying to oust him as vice chair. And the reason for that is, frankly, hilarious.

Kalyn Free, a 61-year-old woman with Native American ancestry and a rival candidate, filed a complaint that Hogg's election as vice chair had violated certain DNC bylaws designed to promote gender-based equity. Essentially, she argued that the process was unfair because it was not sufficiently rigged in favor of her as a woman. For now, the DNC is buying it and has taken steps to void Hogg's election. The party may schedule a redo, which would require Hogg to rerun for the vice chair position.

What's funny about all this is that it illustrates the DNC's precise problem with appealing to young male voters. Essentially, the DNC is clinging to its principles of identity politics, affirmative action, and gender-based preferencing—concepts that are toxic to most voters, including many Democratic voters—to undo the election of a younger,  more rebellious political actor in favor of an older woman.

I don't know whether Hogg's ideas for winning elections are better than Kalyn Free's. But I suspect that constantly overlooking and overriding younger Democrats will continue to hurt the party's appeal. Moreover, voiding the election of a young, male Democrat for an explicitly identity-based reason does not exactly suggest that the party is trying hard to shed its image as an enforcer of culturally woke orthodoxy. The DNC can't complain that voters, particularly Gen Z males, are skeptical that Democrats have their best interests in mind and actually value them as potential sources of support. Unless they make a much more strident effort to distance themselves from extremely unpopular—indeed, cringe—progressive norms like pronoun policing, identity politics, land acknowledgements, and all the rest of the woke milieu, the Dems might as well be the Ruthkanda Forever Party.

Worth Watching

It's finally time for me to read something other than Agatha Christie: I settled on The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. I think I'm about halfway through, and it hasn't quite hooked me yet—but perhaps that's just because I miss Hercule Poirot so much.

When I read the headline, I was honestly unsure of what I was going to get. Then I read the article and realized Hogg isn't a victim of wokeness, any more than a 'skilled, strong' mountain climber is a victim of the mountain.

Hogg-- if a victim of anything-- is a victim of the Herpetologist's handshake. Welcome to it, young progressive male feminists.

    1. Sun Wukong   2 months ago

They always think being a loyal member of the party will save them. It never does.

    2. Rossami   2 months ago

      "Herpetologist's handshake" ??? Not a phrase I'm familiar with.

      1. Rick James   2 months ago

Bit of a long story behind that... I'll try to keep it short and sweet.

Back in the late 90s(?) I was still a regular NPR listener and Terry Gross, host of NPR's long-running show Fresh Air had a guest on who was a herpetologist (someone who studies snakes and other reptiles). He said that when you go to Herpetologist conventions and meet with hundreds of researchers, a HUGE percentage of them have some disfiguring scar, lost some movement in one hand, is missing a finger or two etc. He essentially said that when you spend your life messing around with poisonous reptiles that-- well, you know. Anyhoo, he said the condition was colloquially known as "the herpetologist's handshake".

I think you can figure out the connection between hanging out with, and messing with poisonous reptiles equates to Hogg's experience.

        1. Rossami   2 months ago

          Thank you.

    3. diver64   2 months ago

Hogg isn't a "survivor" of anything. He wasn't even at the school. To portray this smug, self promoting weasel as anything other than that is a disservice to all the real victims at that school. Soy Boi is experiencing the reality he helped to create to don't expect much sympathy from anyone. As for his "trying to get laid" comments, what does everyone think these cucks are trying to do hanging around with angry, nasty chicks screaming about something or other?

Moreover, voiding the election of a young, male Democrat for an explicitly identity-based reason does not exactly suggest that the party is trying hard to shed its image as an enforcer of culturally woke orthodoxy.

Is the party trying to shed that image? I fully admit that my opinion may be informed by my own social construct's political leanings, but if my observations about the left that I get to watch right in front of my own lying eyes can be generalized to the national party, they're leaning into it, not shedding it.

    1. mad.casual   2 months ago

Do you think, after a snake sheds it's skin, all the other snakes get confused by it's new identity?

Gavin Newsom sat down with Charlie Kirk for chrissakes! How can you not see that the party is trying hard to slough off what it once was?

      1. Rick James   2 months ago

Gavin Newsom sat down with Charlie Kirk for chrissakes! How can you not see that the party is trying hard to slough off what it once was?

I admit I have been hearing about this 'rebranding' that Newsom is currently engaged in, but at the same time, I don't listen to much in the "conservative pod-sphere". Followup question: Is this just a reptilian Gavin Newsom op, does it reflect the party as a whole? Is Kamala currently rebranding? I mean, rebranding harder than when she got up in front of a large crowd and open-messaged to would-be immigrants: Don't come, don't come? Rebranding harder than Keir Starmer publicly declaring "the open borders experiment has failed"?

2nd followup: When will Reason re-brand as "libertarian"?

      2. Get To Da Chippah   2 months ago

No matter how many times a snake sheds its skin, it never turns into anything but the same snake it was. So it is with the Democratic Party. They may want to appear to be changing, but underneath they're happy to remain the same.

There is nothing in this world that would embarrass Al Sharpton.

Okay fair enough. And I guess bringing up Jesse Jackson wouldn't save my argument at this point either.

    2. Square = Circle   2 months ago

And worth remembering that there was another kid who was there at that shooting who came out strong against gun control and would say so loudly and clearly to anyone who would listen, and yet, somehow, for some reason, he wasn't hailed as The Voice of the Youth and He Who Speaks for the Victims of Gun Violence.

      1. Gaear Grimsrud   2 months ago

There's actually a group of kids that were actually there and stay in touch on chats. Hogg is the object of actual hatred in these groups.

Isn't there something at the very least unseemly about a political party's intervening in its own primary elections?

    1. Rick James   2 months ago

Hey, some of us spent 8 years screaming in the comments about the unseemly nature of deep-state actors whispering in the ears of Silicon Valley execs to interfere with political discourse, and all we got shouted back at us was: "Sexshun two thirtee" followed up by a bluesky tweet.

      1. Sevo, 5-30-24, embarrassment   2 months ago

And quite a few spent a similar amount of time pointing out that Newsom's (and others) Covid 'emergency power' decisions were going to lead to disaster.
The "Great Barrington Declaration" should have given the asshole Welsh and company to have declared opposition to planned economies. "Reason" (scare quotes intended) delivered crickets.
Been getting the magazine since the '70s, it was published in Santa Barbara, CA. Did contribute to the new LA (location off north-bound 5 as you start climbing to the crest over to the valley); was uncertain.
Did NOT contribute to the swamp offices; Reason is now simply one more swamp-scum operation which still allows comment contrary to its desires.
Fuck Welsh and the lot of the TDS-addled slimy piles of shit who 'write' for what was once about the only libertarian publication.

    2. Square = Circle   2 months ago

Isn't there something at the very least unseemly about a political party's intervening in its own primary elections?

That struck me as weird, too, and potentially a legitimate cause for complaint.

But the point still stands that a rational DNC would oust him on those grounds, not this gender equity BS, especially right after the guy is on Maher getting applause for pointing out exactly this kind of tomfoolery.

      1. Social Justice is neither   2 months ago

You mean the party that explicitly broke it's own rules to shaft Bernie? There are no rules within the DNC

    3. mad.casual   2 months ago

You're talking about a political party that kills babies and calls it reproductive care; that castrates children and calls it gender affirming care.

Shame and self-awareness are not attributes they possess.

  12. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

How dare they presume his gender.

"Essentially, the DNC is clinging to its principles of identity politics, affirmative action, and gender-based preferencing—concepts that are toxic to most voters,"

"including many Democratic voters" (Had to click the link on that one).

    In the Link....
"Fewer than half of Democrats supported affirmative action when they learned that Asian students would be harmed, as opposed to 7 out of 10 Democrats who wanted to see racial preferences upheld when they believed these policies would only disadvantage white students;"

So the real story is ... 70% of Democrats where happy to "see racial preferences" as long as it "disadvantaged white students"

Pretty sure that closes the debate on who the 'racists' are.

David Hogg is not a survivor. He wasn't even at the school when it happened. He rode his bicycle over there after hearing about it. Hogg is a leftist opportunist who believes do not let a crisis go to waste when you can help yourself to a windfall on the backs of real victims.

    1. Otto Penn, American President 2021-2025   2 months ago

It’s a shame he didn’t fall off his bike and die on the way over.

  16. Alphonse Gaston   2 months ago

David Hogg was in my Twitter feed for years. The first thing that stood out was that he was not very bright. He could not logic his way out of a paper bag. He was hardly Harvard material. Had it not been for the shooting and subsequent activism, he would have gone to a college with the word "State" in its name.
Then his encounters with MTG revealed him to be a giant weenie.
Finally, though he was on campus during the shooting, he was in an entirely separate building from the brain-damaged, doubly-orphaned killer. Parkland was made up of multiple separate buildings.

    1. John C. Randolph   2 months ago

      He was hardly Harvard material

Your notion of "Harvard material" is about a generation out of date. He's a snotty little lefturd. He fit right in at Harvard.

  17. John C. Randolph   2 months ago

The punk deserved to get canned, but the democrats also deserve to be saddled with him. I hope he decides to litigate, and both sides waste a shitload of money for a stalemate.

  18. AT   2 months ago

I'm genuinely torn on this one.

On the one hand, Hogg easily has one of the most punchable faces around. Also, every word that comes out of his mouth is patently retarded, so you kinda want to hit him on that basis as well.

Buuuuut.... I can't deny that I want to see him destroy the Democrat Party. I mean, really draw, quarter, burn it, piss out the embers, and then spread its ashes to the four winds.

Hogg just seems to have this Joker-like quality. That's such a double-edged sword though, isn't it.

I know I'm late to this party, but this is the DNC getting buyers remorse since this fucking guy is trying to destroy their party from inside the house and they fucked up big time by not giving themselves a good avenue to remove him.

This person challenging the election is getting play because the DNC wants to get rid of him and this is the best chance they have at the moment. Plain and simple.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 months ago

I know I'm late to this party, but this is the DNC getting buyers remorse since this fucking guy is trying to destroy their party from inside the house and they fucked up big time by not giving themselves a good avenue to remove him.

That, and he doesn't have the cover of his ethnicity to paper over those activities. AOC acted in the same way until Pelosi put her in her place, but now that Pelosi's been put out to Congressional pasture, there isn't anyone to keep a leash on the bitch anymore.

This shouldn't be surprising, though, as the Dems are now experiencing the same populist rebellions in their own ranks as the GOP did starting in 2008 with Sarah Palin's convention speech, followed by the Tea Party insurgency. There just hasn't been a central figure thus far to really coalesce around, but AOC will probably be that person just because of her media profile and being attached at Bernie's hip.
