A Psychedelic Ban Would Disrupt Important Research
Making DOI and DOC Schedule I drugs would interfere with psychiatric research.

You have probably never heard of 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), much less worried about its possible abuse. Yet the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) wants to ban this synthetic psychedelic, a promising research chemical used in more than 900 published studies, by placing it in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), which defeated a previous DEA attempt to ban DOI in 2022, is determined to stop the agency's interference with science again.
A DEA administrative law judge has scheduled a 10-day hearing on the proposed ban, beginning on November 12. SSDP, which filed a prehearing statement on behalf of more than 20 scientists, argues that placing DOI in Schedule I would impose "onerous financial and bureaucratic obstacles on researchers." SSDP also opposes the scheduling of another psychedelic, 2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine (DOC), under the same proposed rule, which the DEA published last December.
"DOI and DOC are important research chemicals with basically no evidence of abuse," says SSDP alum and legal counsel Brett Phelps. Phelps is working with Denver attorney Robert Rush, who represents University of California, Berkeley, neuroscientist Raul Ramos.
"The DEA's attempt to classify DOI, a compound of great significance to both psychedelic and fundamental serotonin research, as a Schedule I substance exemplifies an administrative agency overstepping its bounds," Rush says. "The government admits DOI is not being diverted for use outside of scientific research yet insists on placing this substance in such a restricted class that it will disrupt virtually all current research."
SSDP describes the two compounds as "essential research chemicals in pre-clinical psychiatry and neurobiology," noting that their unscheduled status has made them accessible as tools for studying serotonin receptors. It says DOI, in particular, has been "a cornerstone in neuroscience research" due to its selectivity for the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor, crucial for understanding the therapeutic effects of psychedelics. Scientists have used DOI to "map the localization of an important serotonin receptor in the brain critical in learning, memory, and psychiatric disease," SSDP notes, and DOI studies "have shown encouraging results in managing pain and reducing opioid cravings."
The DEA argues that DOI and DOC "have a high potential for abuse." While the two compounds "are available for purchase from legitimate chemical synthesis companies," the DEA concedes, "there is no evidence of diversion from these companies." But it notes that both drugs "have been encountered by law enforcement in the United States," indicating their "availability for abuse." Because "DOI and DOC are not found in FDA-approved drug products," the DEA says, people who use them must be doing so "on their own initiative, rather than based on medical advice."
Alluding to online accounts of DOI and DOC experiences on sites such as Erowid, the DEA notes "anecdotal reports" of individuals using these substances "for their hallucinogenic effects." From 2005 through 2022, the DEA's National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS) logged 40 reports of DOI and 790 reports of DOC. To put that in perspective, the NFLIS collected nearly 1.2 million drug reports in 2022 alone.
Renowned biochemist Alexander Shulgin described the synthesis and effects of DOI and DOC more than three decades ago. Yet the DEA offers no evidence that recreational use of them is common, let alone that it has caused widespread harm. "To date," the DEA admits, "there are no reports of distressing responses or death associated with DOI in medical literature." It does cite three published reports of adverse events linked to DOC between 2008 and 2015, including "seizures, agitation, tachycardia, hypertension, and death of one individual."
The DEA notes that "DOI and DOC share similar mechanisms of action" with "other schedule I hallucinogens," such as DOM, DMT, and LSD, and "produce similar physiological and subjective effects." It says they therefore "pose the same risks to public health." Although those risks, such as "hallucinogenic effects, sensory distortion, impaired judgment, [and] strange or dangerous behaviors," are mainly "borne by users," the DEA says, "they can affect the general public, as with driving under the influence."
The fact that the DEA counts "hallucinogenic effects" and "sensory distortion" as "risks" underscores its hostility toward psychedelics and its refusal to recognize their potential benefits. In assessing DOI's "potential for abuse," Phelps and Rush note, the DEA "does not distinguish between use and abuse."

The DEA should be regulated out of existence! That would be karma, bitches! Go get honest jobs! (Un-elected assholes bossing us all around! How many decades has this shit been going on now? Dear Leader didn't fix it last time, and won't fix shit this time, either. Just make LOUD noises about shit, is all we can expect, in THIS category.)
FEMA worker told employees to skip over houses in Florida with Trump yard signs.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-fema-official-ordered-relief-workers-to-skip-houses-with-trump-signs?topStoryPosition=1
That person has now been fire.... wait just removed from their position and is still employed.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/fema-official-removed-after-avoid-trump-houses-message-leaks-desantis-orders
Thank god they didn't take revenge on this poor federal employee and fire them or it would have been wrong and immoral according to jeffsarc.
The most surprising thing is that I'm not surprised.
I actually am. That's appalling. If you're working for a government agency and putting people's lives at risk, that's not a firing offense, that's a criminal offense.
Likewise. There seems to be little beneath the Democrats these days.
There is no deep state.
Execution is in order
I'm against the death penalty, but this person was withholding potentially lifesaving aid because of yard signs. Even if it mattered they don't know the politics of the people sheltering inside.
This is so absolutely vile.
Well MammaryBahnFarter-Fuhrer, I'm glad that even PervFected You can see the vileness in treasuring ideology over human life and human well-being. Truly! Congrats! Keep on moving forwards!
Now how about the below case? Ye Worshitter of Sacred Human Fartilized Egg Smells, no matter HOW cancerous they might be? (In the past, PervFect Ye hasn't been able to see SHIT, in the real world, around this!)
Oklahoma now vying with Idaho for most fanatical!

Woman with Cancerous Pregnancy Was Told to Wait in Parking Lot Until She Was 'Crashing'
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/molar-pregnancy/symptoms-causes/syc-20375175
From there, we see that MOLAR PREGNANCIES ARE NEVER VIABLE!!! Yet fascist assholes like sore-in-the-cunt cuntsorevaturds want to endanger women in the Sacred Name of Unique Human DNA, which is present in a womb-slave!
From the listed source…
There are two types of molar pregnancy — complete molar pregnancy and partial molar pregnancy. In a complete molar pregnancy, the placental tissue swells and appears to form fluid-filled cysts. There is no fetus.
In a partial molar pregnancy, the placenta might have both regular and irregular tissue. There may be a fetus, but the fetus can’t survive. The fetus usually is miscarried early in the pregnancy.
So your cool with me advocating for sparing the lives of criminals but not babies. Go fuck yourself, Molech.
I’d trade him to bring back Pnut.
Moose-Mammary-Necrophiliac is SOOOO PervFectly PervFestered that She cunt see the difference between a TRUE AND LITERAL LUMP OF CANCER and a baby! AND is PervFectly PervFucked enough to foist Her Perversions on other people, using the force of Government Almighty!
Possibly according to the Kamala apologists here, that FEMA employee is the real victim.
Hang Mike Pence!!! Twill fix shit ALL!!!
Hang that FEMA employee!!! Twill fix shit ALL!!! Assholes everywhere have a HUGE, raging PUNISH-SHIT-MINT BONER!!!
Punish-punish-punish! Personally, I think that punishment should be strictly reserved for only those who cannot otherwise be corrected, and then, “the punishment should fit the crime”. What is needed, and then no more, as far as the severity of the punishment goes. Even criticism is punishment, and it, too, should be carefully rationed.
What have very varied thinkers through the years said about this?
"Beware of all those in whom the urge to punish is strong." - Friedrich Nietzsche
“Mistrust all those in whom the desire to punish is imperative.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"Let he who is without sin, throw the first stone." - Jesus
“How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” - Jesus
Here is a start to justice:
1. Fire the treasonous employee, his or her supervisor (they either knew what was happening and allowed it, or did not know what was going on--either is sufficient grounds for termination), and any co-workers who went along with the treason. And publish all their names.
2. Prosecute the treasonous employee.
3. Make all FEMA employees undergo anti-DEI training.
You need a law that was broken to prosecute, either state or federal. Not sure a law was broken, and the employee has received the maximum punishment administratively available: termination of employment.
Name and shame the employee. That would be very effective.
Easy one first: Hatch Act.
Followed by conspiracy to violate constitutional rights, and the civil rights act for all whites bypassed.
The FEMA Director has come out and said that person has been fired. I guess the pressure was too much to just do the old "remove from position and quietly put them somewhere else".
SSDP describes the two compounds as "essential research chemical
Oh, well if a bunch of druggie kids say it, then I guess we should just take their word for it. Druggie kids are always so reliable.
Jakey Jakey News Is Fakey never questions his drug-addled sources.
Omniscient AT knows FAR more than ALL of the researchers who have been studying biochemistry etc. for their entire working lives!!! ALL HAIL ALL-KNOWING AT!!!
(Are we peons allowed to take aspirin without Your Permission, Mighty One?)
Jakey Fakey didn't cite researchers who have been studying biochemistry. He cited college kids that want to get high.
"Phelps is working with Denver attorney Robert Rush, who represents University of California, Berkeley, neuroscientist Raul Ramos."
BRILLIANT "neuroscientist AT" is SOOOO much smarter than ALL of the other neuroscientists, that AT doesn't even bother to read the article!
LOL, read the article you twit!
says SSDP alum and legal counsel Brett Phelps. Phelps is working with Denver attorney Robert Rush, who represents University of California, Berkeley, neuroscientist Raul Ramos.
So the druggie kid got a real attorney, who works with a Berkeley - LMAO Berkeley of all places - to help grind their axe. But notice Fakey Jakey couldn't get RAMOS on record. Just the attorney. Spearheaded by the druggie kid.
L M A O.
Clown world people, I present to you Clown WORLD at its finest!
Neuroscientist Raul Ramos lets his lawyer do his talking for him. If'n ye do your OWN talking ("free speech", without a fancy law degree), these days, ye might fall afoul of ASSHOLE AUTHORSHITARIANS like YOU, AuthorShitarian TotalShitarianist!
Hey AuthorShitarian TotalShitarianist! See if PervFected YOU can score an interview with a REAL Fart Smeller, I mean Smart Feller, like neuroscientist Raul Ramos! If'n ye CAN'T do that... Shit MUST mean that YOU are just a no-account student druggie that just wants to get high!!!
(I look forward to YOUR interview results from ANY Smart Feller that thinks shit's worth their time, to talk to a no-account student druggie like PervFected and PervFested YOU!)
MUST mean that YOU are just a no-account student druggie that just wants to get high!!!
Yes, so let's make me the singular authority for an article on the subject.
YOU try, on a regular basis, to make Your PervFected Self The Singular Authority on just about everything! And then advocate using Government Almighty to PUNISH-PUNISH-PUNISH all of the disobedient lesser mortals!
Look, this is a Jake Sullum article. All it needs for "authority" is a drugged up college kid loser. That's how all his articles are.
"A. T.", AT... Twat does shit stand for? AuthorShitarian TotalShitarianism, perhaps, eh, "AT"?
Bud ... TFA says DOI was used in 900 published studies. That's known as "research". Schedule I is reserved for drugs which have no use in research, is it not? Why does this necessitate a 10 day hearing?
And why do you give a shit? Why do you think it is any of your business controlling what other people do?
TFA says DOI was used in 900 published studies. That’s known as “research”.
What studies?
Oh, right. Fakey Jakey doesn't bother telling us. He just deferentially references The Science!™ as an argumentum ad verecundium fallacy. Preferring instead to highlight the arguments of all his stoner college kid buddies. As if he's writing a bunch of narrative-affirming garbage that isn't meant to be challenged by his readers.
Strong work there, right? Strong work.
Except this is Jake the Fake Sullum we're talking about here, and every single person on this site knows that he doesn't have a single brain cell that hasn't been addled by copious amounts of bong smoke - meaning that he HAS to be challenged because every single word that comes out of his mouth every single day of the week is total BS.
AT the Asshole TotalShitarian would WITHOUT A DOUBT change its mind, if we ONLY found more science studies! Ha! I also have some prime land in Florida to sell to you!
If anyone is curious ass to just HOW much of an Asshole TotalShitarian "AT" is, check shit out!
Earlier comment to AT:
I think I have, AT long last, fingered You and Yours out... You Deeply Care about EVERYONE!!! SOOO Deeply, SOOO Cumpassionately, SOOO benevolently, SOOO Lovingly, even, that Ye are Pervfectly willing to SEVERELY PUNISH all who disagree with YE, in even the tiniest way!!! Especially those who steal and boil a few cups of pond water, to save their lives!!!
To put this in CUNT-text of just HOW much of a power-pig cunt AT is... See Asshole's non-repentance for it's UTTER ASSHOLERY!!!
For those who give a shit, be shit know, AT is an UDDER ASSHOLE who is FAR more worried about the “property rights” of a pond-owner, if I should (as a thirsting-to-death one) fetch a few cups of water to boil and drink, thereby killing a few amoebas and water-bears etc. … Compared to INFIDELS WHO KILL FRESHLY FARTILIZED SACRED EGG SMELLS!!! Fuck off and die, fascist asshole!!!
https://reason.com/2024/03/07/alabama-governor-signs-bill-protecting-ivf-treatments/?comments=true#comment-10480184
You arrogant nonsensical twit! I know arguing with you is like arguing with a brick wall, but who knows, more sensible people just MIGHT take a clue from the below:
Case A: Theoretical (COULDA-WOULDA-SHOULDA) harm to some fartilized HUMAN egg smells, caused by NOT implanting the tested-and-genetically defective said “Sacred” fartilized HUMAN egg smells, which are known to, at BEST case, if “successfully” brought to term, would suffer and die in hours or days at the most. There ARE these cases, you know! AND THE KICKER IS, THE FUCKING EGG SMELL IS FROZEN, OUTSIDE THE HUMAN BODY, AND SHOWS ZERO SIGNS OF LIFE, ABILITY TO FEEL PAIN, OR SENTIENCE!!!!
Case B: A thirsty human wants to drink pond water, ’cause he has no other water source. So, not liking diseases either, he BOILS the water first, KILLING innocent, motile, swimming, pain-feeling paramecia and water bears!!!
Now WHO has done more harm, and who, if anyone, should be PUNISHED?
AND WHO IS AN ARROGANT PUNISHMENT-LUSTING ASSHOLE MICRO-MANAGING, POWER-PIG AUTHORITARIAN?!?!?
(Asshole then split hairs about WHO is the pond-water owner, and does snot give ONE hoot in Hell about FORCING women to be implanted with know-genetically-defective Sacred Fartilized Egg Smells!!! Womb slavery WONDERFUL... Pond-water theft to save human life TERRIBLE!!)
And this is the part where SQRLSY officially goes off the rails, loses the plot, and just begins vomiting nonsense in all directions.
Game over kid. Insert another quarter.
Any reader caring to see WHO is the arrogant authorShitarian Asshole here, go read the exchange around https://reason.com/2024/03/07/alabama-governor-signs-bill-protecting-ivf-treatments/?comments=true#comment-10480184
Yes, that's a good one. It's like Squirrel's "I don't know I'm not a biologist" moment.
What, you want he should list all 900 studies?
Are you really so bent out of shape by Sullum's duplicity that you cannot distinguish obvious lies from implausible ones?
How you survive daily life with all those rascals defrauding you by the minute is beyond me.
What, you want he should list all 900 studies?
Sure, why not? I mean, if I had 900 studies that support something I’m advocating, I’d provide a list (or a least a link to a list) of every single one.
Wonder why Fakey Jakey doesn’t do that. Think maybe he’s just shining everyone on, trying to facilitate his perpetual high?
OK, you supply 900 certs for your next claim.
Dare you.
I'm not a Reason staff writer. If they'd like to pay me for that, I'm open to hearing proposals.
How did it get to be up to you to decide? Why can't you leave others alone? Just what is your authoritarian-assed problem? It's not a settled ethical principle that others should be jailed for doing something you seem to consider nasty. You could never tell when somebody might find you nasty and eliminate you.
What in the world are you talking about? Are you sure you're even replying to the correct person?
AT the Asshole TotalShitarian is the Asshole who is being responded to, if Supremely Arrogant Power-Pig One could just LEARN TO READ THREADS!!! Or are there MANY-MANY different Asshole TotalShitarians (ATs) living in Your PervFected Head, and Ye can SNOT keep track of them all?

People who are evil attack others instead of facing their own failures. Peck demonstrates the havoc these “people of the lie” work in the lives of those around them.
I have no idea what you're talking about, but feel free to re-compose that post after you've sobered up. I'll happily address it then.
YOU- talking about banning things. "Oh, well if a bunch of druggie kids say it, then I guess we should just take their word for it. Druggie kids are always so reliable." that in response to researchers I'm sure you don't know. Your first response is to call them druggies, thereby nullifying their opinions. I have an interest in these studies. My wife is an adult who was physically and psychologically abused as a child. Drugs like these might be the path, like MDMA, to effective therapy. But you wanting to restrict them, based only on your opinion that somebody, somewhere, might be using them for self-guided purposes, instead of obeying rules and taking orders from authorities, makes it less likely that my wife, myself and thousands of others get relief.
I haven't said a word about banning things. At least, not in this conversations. Are you sure you're replying to the right person?
Your first response is to call them druggies,
Well, they're self-admitted druggies, so...
My wife is an adult who was physically and psychologically abused as a child.
Wah. Your sob stories are not an argument.
Drugs like these might be the path, like MDMA, to effective therapy.
Cool. I'm all for it. So is Normal America. Doctor prescribed, doctor administered, doctor monitored, inpatient-only usage, full supervision during its course, and discharge only after the drugs have performed their purpose.
Meet Normal America halfway on the subject. That's all we ask.
But that's not really what you want, is it. Come on, admit it. We both know it.
What are YOU talking about? Do you think that everyone who doesn't want to have the government in charge of all aspects of their life is some kind of an abuser? I don't even drink enough to drain a six pack in a year, and I've never liked intoxicants. why do some people think, others must as permission always? At the very least, it is no part of the national government's duties. You are just an authoritarian. Even more likely a Karen.
Like I said - I haven't said a word about banning things.
I'm not sure you know who you're replying to. Is it the drugs? Are they making you addled? See, this is why the druggies need to meet the normies halfway.
Fuck you. You're just a troll and a sea lion. And an authoritarian.
Language.
I'm not sure what you are saying. There is quite a bit of research showing microdoses of certain drugs are very helpful for PTSD. RFK Jr has already said he will push for studies into them for this use and the DEA clowns involved are probably not long for their government jobs.
There is quite a bit of research showing microdoses of certain drugs are very helpful for PTSD.
Cool. But we're not talking about microdoses used for therapeutic purposes, are we. Otherwise we'd support the ban with that singular exception carved out.
But that's not what going on here, is it.
Yes, that is what is going on here. The DEA want's to ban a drug which would preclude any research into it for treatment of PTSD or other mental illness.
Because of its public health concerns.
Now, if the article had made ANY indication of how they might make this worth to mitigate those concerns, you might have an argument. Instead it just dismisses them out of hand. Which Reason always does.
Because it's not about medicine for them. It's about getting their grubby little druggie mitts on hallucinogens to use recreationally.
This is why they're NEVER willing to meet normal people halfway on any drug-related subject.
Sotomayor watch has begun. Expect many a leftie to demand she step down before Trump takes office.

I wasn't aware of this, thanks!
It wouldn’t matter. Biden’s a lame duck. He’d never get a Judicial Confirmation through in six weeks.
So, yea, go ahead and step down, Sandy. Trump would love another judicial nomination to kick off 2025. He wouldn't even need to worry about the half-dozen or so House spots still up for grabs.
And, truth be told, I’m starting to think Biden – who suddenly appears increasingly cognizant – is delighting in all this. He kinda got the last word in it all, didn’t he lol.
https://x.com/RampCapitalLLC/status/1854683444149657646
Yeah the old guy actually has a spring in his step. The party fucked with him and he won. Nobody fucks with a Biden.
I’m willing to bet he personally pulled the plug on Harris.
How much help could Biden have given her? I don't think anything anyone could've done would've made it even close.
Midnight ballot dumps.
Also midnight pajama dumps.
Foreign meeting dumps.
Etc
Old people shit their pants. LOL
You seriously think there are people whose perpetration of such cheating would be contingent on Biden's say-so?
Are you saying someone else is in charge?
And I think he just fled the country.
Jill Biden dressed from head to toe in a MAGA red pantsuit when she voted was hilarious.
This is what happens when horrible people do horrible things to other horrible people.
Meanwhile, Barack and Chewbacca have fled the country.
Things just keep getting better every day.
Sounds like they’re guilty of something they could be prosecuted for.
Yeah, he's having a hard time disguising how much he's enjoying this. Jill Biden going out to vote in a red suit was not any sort of accident.
https://x.com/AB84/status/1854968597551919174/photo/1
I'm going to guess how everything went down in 2019/2020, and I may or may not be right.
Biden had always wanted to be President, so much so, that he's made several runs in the past until he got knocked out for plagiarism or lying. Obama, his old boss, comes up to him to make a deal: "I get you into office, and I get to run most things." Biden, as this appeals to his vanity, agrees. Biden gets anointed as the Democratic candidate. Obama, using every trick in the book, stuffs the ballot boxes in specific swing states to push Biden over the top. Biden then becomes President, fulfilling his dream. 2024 comes around, and it's time to run for reelection. Obama helps Biden avoid any serious primary challenges as who really wants to challenge the Presidential incumbent (it rarely happens). But, what happens next trows a major monkey wrench into the plans.
Biden has the disastrous debate with Trump. So bad that it looks like Biden just blew the election on that debate alone. So they try a two-pronged plan. One, they try to take out Trump physically by assassination. That almost succeeded as they managed to nick his ear due to him turning his head. If not for that turn, Trump would not be here right now. Two, they panic and decide to replace Biden. The original idea was to have a brokered convention controlled by Obama and the Clintons. Biden threw yet another monkey wrench into the plans by supporting Harris almost immediately after the coup. He had been promised the Presidency by Obama, and now Obama was going to drop him like a used condom.
So now we get Harris as the Presidential candidate. She was foisted on Biden originally to provide a "black" woman on his ticket, but she's never gotten anywhere by her own merits, and isn't anywhere near intelligent enough to make it as President. Obama makes do with it as Harris is controllable. They plan to run the same playbook as 2020: keep her out of the light and run an anti-Trump campaign. This fails as it's not 2020, Trump is not the incumbent, and there's no pandemic. Thus, the media is screaming for Harris to get out there and to be interviewed. In the meantime, she chooses Walz as her VP candidate. Walz was the last one standing who might not offend the "river to the sea" crowd. Pritzker and Shapiro might.
So Harris goes on TV and has several terrible interviews, most notably with Brett Baier. Her internal polling sinks further, in spite of the public polls (read: propaganda) saying she's either up or tied with Trump. Meanwhile, Biden makes comments here and there that further damage her campaign. In the end, Biden provides no help and further sinks her campaign as an insult and "fuck you" to Obama and the Clintons after they reigned on the 2020 deal. Obama and the Clintons fucked with a Biden and they found out.
stuffs the ballot boxes in specific swing states to push Biden over the top.
Hah! If that was possibly real then there’d be like what? 10? 20 million votes missing in prior and subsequent elections?
Ludicrous.
Don’t you remember? Covid killed all those people.
I'm confused. Did the extra 20 million vote Democrat WITH covid, or OF covid?
We still know 0 about the first shooter.
And we never will. Big Fed's three letter groups saw to that tout de suite.
Big Fed’s three letter groups were the shooter.
After having listened to Biden’s post election presser, he seemed more cognizant then than he has for years. It was Tim Walz weird.
Nothing motivates a Democrat like malevolence and revenge.
Put's a whole new spin on "Don’t Underestimate Joe’s Ability To F Things Up," doesn't it.
Ha! Yeah he fucked things up for the party. But in the end he got his revenge.
Between Joe’s vanity and Obama’s greed. Hopefully, the Democratic Party has a hard time coming back from this.
What's the over/under on how long it'll be before Dipshit Dave Weigel (Sarah Palin's Buttplug) finally gets the balls to show himself here once again?
He has been on with his socks.
Reason underwent maintenance recently (I don't keep any kind of tabs on this schedule), so it is possible that he did the bannable offense, again.
I'm sure he'll be around. The election didn't affect him.
Remember - he doesn't root for either party. He just wants gridlock.
While calling media matter non partisan and schiff the last truth teller in Congress.
Such a ban could also disrupt recruiting special Act Blue operators.
Want to forecast whether the Trump administration will be better on this issue? I don't know if it can be held off long enough for this particular decision to take place under Trump. Also I'm less pleased now that RFK says he wants to consult rather than take a Cabinet post.
“Important for psychiatric research” is like saying you have a ringer in the peewee baseball game. Sure, it might make a difference on the outcome, but you’re not exactly changing the world. Psychiatric research is notoriously problematic with replication errors.
I think a better argument, instead of arguing from importance, is to simply say the government has not fucking business in banning substances.
Except, the decision is made on the premise that government is in that business. What's DEA going to do, say they shouldn't have their jobs? So it's not a better argument at all where it counts.
TFA says the drug was used in "900 published studies" That alone ought to keep it off Schedule I.
Absolutely correct on both counts.
Psychiatric research is akin to thousands of monkeys throwing shit at a wall where occasionally something sticks, but even when it sticks it turns out it's mostly big pharma looking around for a money printer rather than a real breakthrough. They've invented all kinds of new conditions to treat is the way I mostly look at it. Even while there are a lot of drugs that do actually help there are also a bunch that do a lot of harm.
The question really is 'what is the governments interest in the drugs I choose to take' but of course, they've made it their business by throwing gobs of taxpayer money at the 'problem'.
Also, yes, there are major harms that can result from drugs but the vast majority of those problems are on the individual user and only become the governments problem through transfer payments in the health system or incarceration for crimes that the user committed while either high or seeking a high.

Honestly if Arizona intentionally decided to convince the rest of the country that it's election system is thoroughly corrupt they could not do better than they're doing right now. So it all boils down to midnight ballot dumps two weeks after election day? Seriously?
They are taking 5 days to cure ballots. Multiple voting site issues primarily in red areas. Slow counts. Hostile election officials.

Thanks for the laughs. But I'm getting tired of winning.
But as long as they don't pull an assassination or coup, there's still so much winning to go.
BREAKING: 64% of Native Americans voted for Trump.
They remember the last time there was an open border policy
Imagine natives overwhelmingly supporting the party who didn't do the Indian Wars and the Trail of Tears. Weird.
Anyway, watch the Democrats embrace their racist roots soon as they realize that Black men and Latinos find them perverse and repellent and are not going to deliver them the permanent majority they dreamed of.
Sunny Hostin has been in full on rage mode against those two groups for days now.
Reason-tier libertarians continue to make the party relevant in their own special way:
Chase got half the votes in Iowa of RFK's shuttered campaign
Sarc outted him. He would have won if not outed. Greatest polocu bumper stickers with no actual plans in history.
Outed him? You mean he was gay the whole time?
Well no wonder he only got 0.4% of the vote. Nobody will vote for a gay guy. Just ask Sarc.
I blame sarc.
Does Jeffy know?
Racism caused Chase to come in fifth and compelled sarc to drink one.
Sure it was just one?
“inflation is high and the world is at chaos, how do you plan to fix it?”
Kamala HQ:
Why do people insist on doing these things?
To paraphrase Bull Durham, this world is tailor made for people who lack self awareness.
The world is sarc's.
Dear Colt 45,
Man, I need you more than ever. The past few days have been rough. Really rough. First, it turns out racist voters avoided supporting Chase because he is gay. He is more Libertarian than any other. But racism!
Second, my candidate came in second. Those racist Trump supporters prevented 15 million votes from being added. Racism! Binary racists!!!

Wait. You're telling me this side DIDN'T win??? I'm so ashamed of my country.
Did Trump prosecutor Jack Smith just call for insurrection by their rules? These people are less self aware than Sarc.
Jack E. Smith @7Veritas4
I don't fault anyone for suspecting the guy, who was criminally indicted for trying to steal the 2020 election, might have stolen the 2024 election.
You'd be naive not to suspect foul play.
He is the architect of distrust in our institutions, the sower of doubt in our election processes, the catalyst of our national discord.
Rather than spend endless hours pontificating on why he won, the media should spend their time verifying the results.
Maybe then they'll get people to actually tune in.
House ordered him not to destroy documents.
FBI and DoJ wiped phones under subpoena from Mueller. Despite orders.
Don't think Trump will tolerate Smith doing so.
Sounds insurrectiony.
It hasn’t been for months on end, so not insurrection. - jeff
Got a question for y’all. Has anything like this ever happened to you?
On Friday 2024-10-25, Reason began accepting my comments and returning a comment URL, but I could not actually see them. I have logged out, logged back in, restarted the browser, used different browsers and computers and my phone. Nothing works. I can see other people’s comments. Beginning Saturday the 26th, I have been using Reason‘s feedback form to report each instance. It seems a rather peculiar way to nudge someone into paying $25, and I’m not quite that paranoid.
The last comment which I could actually see was from 2024-10-25 at 12:06.
https://reason.com/2024/10/25/how-to-avoid-paying-tariffs-have-a-friend-in-washington/?comments=true#comment-10773791.
I’ve started posting this comment every morning since. If you can see this, please send a message to cartermccharter at the google address. Thank you.
WHOA! This one took! No need for emails. Funny thing is, I just last night noted this on my substack.
Hasn't happened to me yet.
This happens when one of their filters determines a link in your post is bad. It will show as if you posted, but won’t show the comment.
Many of us have seen this. For a few weeks they did it for every just the news links.
I've even seen it do it if you post specific names at times.
Maybe that's it and they changed the filter this morning. But that above post is the same one I've been posting for the last couple of weeks, some of the other ghosted comments were dead ordinary, and it wasn't just one comment, it was all comments, as if some switch had been set to ghost all my comments. I doubt my occasional comments about "Fire KMW" were the most obnoxious she's gotten.
I've had that experience only when posting links. But we're all living on borrowed time. No one knows when Reason Plus will bring the hammer down.
In the grand scheme of things, we are all on borrowed time.
In case this happens to anyone else ...
When this first happened, I thought it was just another glitch in a glitchy site. It does like to log me off in the middle of a comments, and the comment count doesn't always match reality. Editing comments doesn't preserve all tags and sometimes adds new ones.
But it kept happening, and I started keeping track of all the ghost comment URLs. I just tried; none of them show up now.
Eventually I just started posting that comment above every morning, then using the "Website technical issue" link to complain. After a week of that, I sent email to my favorite Reason honcho, KM-W, and never got a response. That was last week on 2024-11-01. No response. Not in any spam folder.
I kept posting this every morning just out of curiosity, skipped a couple of days. Yesterday, ghosted. Today, posted.
I wonder if this is what happened to other commenters who just disappeared without a trace. My pet theory is that the IT guy who handles "Website technical issues" only works part time or was on vacation, but I doubt I'll ever know. I really really doubt it was my Substack post.
What kind of service do you expect for free?
What! My invaluable wisdom shines in all my comments! They should be paying me!
They would pay you what you are worth, but there is this pesky minimum wage.
My old account got shadowbanned. Let me try it. Post reply to this one:
Testing one two three, testing. *phht* is this thing on?
Holy shit! It worked! Wow, ok, so now that I'm kind of all in on Rick James... do I go back to my old original or stick wid dis one?
This is tougher than deciding on who to vote for for presidentialism.
Maybe Rick James, bitch? 😉
I can see it.
Welcome back Paul! (if in fact that is your real name). By the way you (or maybe it was Rick James) once promised to pull the scab off of the impending KMW Reason Plus lockdown with receipts. Still waiting.
Oh, wow, I forgot about that.
Yeah, so I don't have 'receipts', I just had a theory based on something that happened to another media group "UnHerd". I'll try to post it in an active thread next week.
I'll be looking for it.
Woah, I had zero idea that you were Rick James.
I did create a new account, but sure enough, no commenting, and if I were interested in paying $25, I could pay it on this old account too. I did think a little of paying the $25, partly to see if that cleared it up, but also to post what happened, because it was such a surprise to me that I wondered how many other disappearances were the same, and I did wonder if not showing me my own comments was some kind of nudgenudgewinkwink to get my $25.
25 bucks to post JS;dr seems kind of steep to me.
And I didn't. KMW deserves my $25 even less than the occasional pearls of wisdom I spew here by accident.
Does KM-W's editorial authority fully extend over the website, or does she primarily oversee the magazine?
Zero idea. But they have a lot in common and if she wanted to, she could do something. She could have at least responded to my email.
Yevgeny had to hack into their web server to alter some settings for my account to keep working. Kanyeshna.
As for this article ... sure, the government should just butt out. But just listing pot as Schedule anything and not listing alcohol is all the example you need of how stupid the whole War on (Some) Drug (Users) is. This article just seems like someone was looking for a way to waste a day and get paid for it.
I wouldn't say "wasted." Their (alleged) candidate did get .04% more of the vote than my pubes did. While their reluctant but strategic candidate came in a distant 2nd.
Nice work, everyone. Rimjobs all around.
It's not just that it's not listed; up front, the statute explicitly exempts wine, malt beverages, and distilled spirits (but not other forms of alcohol) from being controlled substances. I'm sure its drafters understood that if the listed and implied criteria were applied, tobacco and liquor products would rank high on the schedules, so they had to make sure that didn't happen.
Hadn't known that. Every time I think government has outdone itself, it outdoes itself again.

https://brownstone.org/articles/the-cdc-planned-quarantine-camps-nationwide/
Features of the CDC’s edicts did incredible damage. It imposed the rent moratorium. It decreed the ridiculous “six feet of distance” and mask mandates. It forced Plexiglas as the interface for commercial transactions. It implied that mail-in balloting must be the norm, which probably flipped the election. It delayed the reopening as long as possible. It was sadistic.
Even with all that, worse was planned. On July 26, 2020, with the George Floyd riots having finally settled down, the CDC issued a plan for establishing nationwide quarantine camps. People were to be isolated, given only food and some cleaning supplies. They would be banned from participating in any religious services. The plan included contingencies for preventing suicide. There were no provisions made for any legal appeals or even the right to legal counsel.
The plan’s authors were unnamed but included 26 footnotes. It was completely official. The document was only removed on about March 26, 2023. During the entire intervening time, the plan survived on the CDC’s public site with little to no public notice or controversy.
It was called “Interim Operational Considerations for Implementing the Shielding Approach to Prevent COVID-19 Infections in Humanitarian Settings.”
There has to, has to, has to be some sort of reckoning for the people who did this stuff. They killed way too many people and ruined the lives of way too many more to say forgive and forget. And the fact that they wanted it to be far worse is absolutely intolerable.
There needs to be global Nuremberg trials.
The real problem is the big portion of our fellow Americans who supported those ideas then, and still support them now. And they are the people ready to double down on the totalitarian schemes to protect (D)emocracy.
But no longer the majority and shrinking by the hour. The spell has been broken.
I think this is an attempt by the DEA to distract everyone's attention from the slow but steady progress being made in support of the roles psychedelic drugs may play in the treatment of mental illness. It's a bullshit ploy, and the DEA would be happy to lose 100 people to suicide rather than see 1 person taking a nice, safe trip. They're puritans, as are death penalty supporters.
And yes, it's government overreach. But hey, hurrah, and huzza! Trump's back in now, and he'll surely trim the DEA down to size. We can count on that, right? Of course he'll be stoking up the death penalty machine to target dealers, and probably some users too. He's far from being a puritan, but he knows that Texas will love the chance to poison, fry, or hang more miscreants. And he don't mess with Texas, do he?
He publicly promised Rogan and RFK he would have therapeutic psychedelics investigated.
They're running psychiatric research comparing shrooms to marijuana. For science.
Clarification: Not really, as far as I know.
Trump plan to end the slaughter in Ukraine taking shape. Zelensky forced to end his comedy tour. Reason libertarian neocons hardest hit.
https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/musk-says-time-warmonger-profiteers-nod-trump-ukraine-peace-plan
The front lines in the east "would essentially lock in place" according to the proposed plan which is reportedly attracting most attention within Trump's team, and this freeze would be enforced by European peacekeepers along an 800-mile demilitarized zone.
Trump officials have told the WSJ that the president-elect is committed to seeing that no American troops are deployed as part of policing this buffer zone; instead the Europeans should shoulder the burden:
Who would police that territory remains unclear, but one adviser said the peacekeeping force wouldn’t involve American troops, nor come from a U.S.-funded international body, such as the United Nations.
“We can do training and other support but the barrel of the gun is going to be European,” a member of Trump’s team said. “We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it.”
"The senseless killing will end soon. Time is up for the warmonger profiteers," Musk posted on X in direct response to X commentator Mario Nawfal, who wrote about "Trump’s plan for Ukraine."
Nawfal in his original post which caught Musk's attention wrote that Trump "reportedly plans an 800-mile demilitarized zone between Russia and Ukraine, with British and European troops patrolling the area" - quoting Newsweek. "Under the proposal, Russia would retain its territorial gains, and Ukraine would agree not to join NATO for 20 years," Nawfal's post added.
Meh, nothing will be concretely revealed until Trump, Zelensky and Putin sit down wherever they intend to hash this out.
But I do agree that Ukraine must accept a loss of territory if peace is to happen.
News from Russia is they don’t give a rat’s ass and it has been that way for months. If Trump were smart, he’d just stop funding the bandera regime and let the locals figure it out. He avoided cosplaying Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden during his first term. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I have several attitudes.
From a personal point of view, stop stealing my money and sending it to foreigners. Redistribution is bad enough. Redistribution to foreigners is worse.
Putin is following Hitler's piecemeal plan, just like Austria, Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, Poland. But Zelensky is just as corrupt and dictatorial. It's a damn shame someone won't stop Putin, but also damn shame Zelensky can't be stopped at the same time.
If Ukraine weren't corrupt, and my taxes weren't being stolen, I might have sent them some money. But my taxes are being stolen and sent to a corrupt regime.
"The fact that the DEA counts "hallucinogenic effects" and "sensory distortion" as "risks" underscores its hostility toward psychedelics and its refusal to recognize their potential benefits."
Those are risky side effects if not taken in a controlled circumstance. That Sullum does not like the choice of words does not make less so.
You can damn well bet if Biden were proposing this as opposed to Trump, the TDS-addled steaming pile of shit Sullum would be singing its praises.
Get fucked with a barb-wire-wrapped broom stick, Sullum, and then FOAD, asshole.
