It's happening: Good morning, there's an election taking place today.

god i'm so excited to spend the next 36 hours straight looking at maps, watching numbers on graphs change, and reading posts about the maps and graphs from my friends on the computer

The great news is that someone will lose. Or will they? Nate Silver and other pollsters are predicting the final result being shockingly close, with some odds of a tie: "After 80,000 simulations, Kamala Harris won the Electoral College in…40,012 of them, or 50.015 percent," writes Silver. "The remaining 39,988 were split between Trump (39,718) and no majority—a 269-269 tie—which practically speaking would probably be resolved for Trump in the U.S. House."

"In 6 of the 7 key swing states, our final polling average is within 1.2 points; the only one with something resembling a clear lead is Arizona for Trump," notes Silver. "But even there, some polls show Harris leading amidst evidence of a late rebound for her with Latino voters. And Harris has closed comparatively strongly in Wisconsin and Michigan."

Nobody knows how it will shake out, and after the turbulence at the beginning of the campaign cycle that led to Harris ascending in Joe Biden's stead, the campaigns have proceeded mostly like you would have expected: policy-lite, lots of Trump bluster, plenty of Biden-admin-related revisionism, both teams clumsily attempting to figure out how to message on inflation and border. The Dem strategists seemed to have mostly recovered from the wokeness fever that gripped 2020 (and proved unsuccessful at persuading moderates) and we were all probably better for it.

The civil war memes have abounded (see here and here) and The New Yorker published a long feature on the Americans prepping for a descent into political violence. But no matter how this election shakes out, the doomer cosplayers are probably wrong, and we will still have a country at the end of it. A stupid country, full of government-spending-born inflation and violations of our civil liberties and the theft we're supposed to politely call taxation, but a country nonetheless.

"A republic if you can keep it," said Benjamin Franklin in 1787, on the last day of the Constitutional Convention, in response to a question as to whether they'd gone for played-out monarchy or been able to negotiate something better: a republic. It's a corny thing to quote, and even to think about, but I'm leaning in, damn it. This ole country we've got here is a great thing worth keeping, and that wholly transcends who wins or loses today. This is a country where upward mobility is possible for even the poorest newcomer, where you are allowed to worship freely and devoutly, where we've adopted a certain cultural friendliness to help us manage the turbulence of pluralism. We spend each day cooperating with those who are, in many cases, quite unlike us (more so if you live in a large city), mediated by the exchange of money and goods and pleasantries. We get to start businesses, stockpile guns, homeschool our kids, all with some permissions from the state, but by and large far more freedom than almost any other country allows.

None of it is perfect, but the essentials for a good life are more easily gotten here than almost any other place. And, perhaps just as importantly, the freedom to define what a good life looks like to you is freely granted here. It's all a gift—and it's very much worth keeping.

Scenes from New York: Let's help our brethren win (or lose) some dough.

DO NOT SAY, 'My vote doesn't matter' if you live in a state that is very red or very blue. That's just not true!

Hundreds of millions have been bet on the winner of the popular vote, and those gamblers and speculators are counting on you.

Do your part tomorrow.

QUICK HITS

  • "Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied in the Dixville Notch midnight vote kicking off the official start to 2024's Election Day," reports ABC News. "Following the national trends, indicating a very close race, Harris and Trump each garnered three votes between the six registered voters in Dixville Notch, a small New Hampshire north country town."
  • Surprising literally no one, Joe Rogan endorsed Donald Trump.
  • "Your moral core is magnificent," Whoopi Goldberg tells…wait for it…Liz Cheney! (Depends on how you feel about hawks.)
  • An economist's breakdown of a misinterpreted chart about working class wages and increased migration.
  • Please make it stop:

  • I feel like this has actually been easy for most of us to do, with perhaps Stormy as one of the few exceptions:

Stormy Daniels says she wants to keep Trump out of "our bedrooms."pic.twitter.com/3I0FYaNIAF

  • lol:

Trump is going on a hero's journey where he has befriended all his former enemies - in reverse order. Megyn was the last one.

And she was also his very first target, during the August 2015 primary debate in Detroit.

It's poetic. https://t.co/NSunH82Wx8

  • This would be an absurd outcome:

Good morning, there's an election taking place today.

Fight fight fight! Or don't. Who cares.

Hey, we've known since childhood we'd one day be fighting over toilet paper and fuel in a dystopian hellscape, it's just arriving a little later than expected.

Whatever. We had a good run.

      I do.

What % won't vote, won't endorse any ruler but would it they could vote for 1. None. 2. Abolish this form of govt. 3. I'll self-govern.

Once the public accept “the law”, i.e., deadly threats instead of reason, as “protection & service”, all is lost.
Coercion as a political paradigm is NOT moral, just, humane, civil. It creates rulers/ruled, authoritarianism. It invites savage brutality. Psychopaths are given free rein. Public life is chaotic. No one is safe or protected. Even a POTUS is in danger of being murdered by the so-called public servants, e.g., the CIA.

Yet, the youth are programed in govt. schools that this is unquestionable “law & order”. Most do not question it, or much of anything because they are not taught how to think, how to be self-governing, independent. Why?
That would create freedom loving self-confident citizens who would not vote to be ruled.

      3. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

Arizona. Non stop. English and Spanish.

        1. Chumby   7 months ago

CD2 here will go to Trump. The deluge of ads are for the total state vote and 2 more electoral votes.

The incumbent blue congressman did a 180 on his support of 2A. He still claims to support it with some lame-ass ad showing him shooting a bolt action rifle.

Candidates that are not supporting semi auto handguns with 17-round magazines, AR-15s, or AKs are not 2A friendly. A certain candidate that sarc said is gay shared media of him shooting a revolver. 2A is not about (Elmer) Fudd guns.

          1. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

Amazing how many democrats pretend to be pro gun for 2 months around an election. More amazing how many dumb voters fall for it.

I've had to remind myself: We Are All Americans.

Roughly 80MM Americans will vote for Pres Trump, and roughly 80MM Americans will vote for VP Harris.

“As part of its radical rush-to-green agenda, the administration gave hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to activists who also engage in political activities,” lawmakers behind the report said in a joint statement. “It was empowered to do so by congressional Democrats who jammed through legislation that was designed to rush money out the door as quickly as possible with no guards against waste, fraud, and abuse.”

The report points to the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, a Democrat bill that, among other things, gave about $41 billion to the Environmental Protection Agency, four times its annual budget, $3 billion of which was for the environmental justice grants.

  8. Chumby   7 months ago

During online activities, I often encounter scammers. They are easily parsed out through their dialects and using Reverse Image Search on profile pics (the Yandex offering usually identifies the original source).

One recent scammer talked about Harris being a good potus choice since she would be the first woman president (apparently Obama doesn’t count) and women would like that. I asked the scammer about Kamala’s husband putting hands on another woman, Kamala ignoring Biden’s interactions with Tara Reid; female secret service agents he insisted skinny dipping in front of; showering with his daughter; groping-kissing-sexualizing-fondling young girls, blow jobbing her way to a promotion, Kamala allowing thousands of rapists into the nation, and Kamala plagiarizing from Wikipedia. Chumby closed with, People wanting less rapes, less domestic violence, less inappropriate sexual contacts and a woman that can lead effectively would not prefer Kamala.

Kamala blows more in office than to she did to get there.

Maybe more people pay attention this time. Although media is once again saying late vote shifts are normal. Even when mail on ballots are much closer to 50/50 this time, the claim will be Republicans don't vote early, ignore the data, 90% batches for Kamala was expected.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   7 months ago

It will take a while to figure out exactly how many faked ballots they need to generate to win, while still maintaining the barest thread of legitimacy (that is, 150% of registered voters voting for Harris might just raise a few eyebrows, but Harris getting 52% of the registered voters to Trump's 50% could be called "human error").

"Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied in the Dixville Notch midnight vote kicking off the official start to 2024's Election Day," reports ABC News. Crappiest Hitler ever: 50 Orthodox Rabbis Endorse Donald Trump

Rabbi Tuly Weisz, who wrote the pro-Trump letter and organized the petition commented. “I saw Rabbi Yankelowitz’s letter and was immediately appalled. As someone intimately familiar with the American rabbinate, I could easily see that most of the 33 “Orthodox rabbis” are neither Orthodox, nor rabbis,” said Weisz.
“Quite a few are woke academics and left wing activists. Many have views that are completely incompatible with Orthodox Judaism. The fact that these are the only ones who would sign an “Orthodox Rabbis for Kamala” letter shows just how little support there is among the Orthodox Jewish community for an extension of the Biden administration.”

One of the key things not being discussed this election is how known errors, intrentional as all errors favor democrats, in the 2020 census gave deep blue states a net gain of around 12 electoral college votes. Including illegals into the census to count towards appropriation also has a large effect.

Without these changes the chances for Kamala to win drop immensely.

    Final Election Prediction

Pres Trump wins EC 281-257 (carries PA, loses rest of blue wall)
    – He will win the most votes, nationally (48.7%)
Senate: Team R walks away with 53 seats
House: Team R ends with 227 seats.

Other: PA will take 7-10 days to count and sort out; unless a it is a blowout (unlikely)

Let the wailing, gnashing of teeth and caterwauling begin!

    1. Mike Parsons   7 months ago

My bet is about the same, but with Kamala a narrow pop vote win, otherwise copy paste of yours

      1. Commenter_XY   7 months ago

The House is the biggie, if Pres Trump wins. He would be effectively hobbled by a Team D House.

        The Senate seems a lock.

        1. Mike Parsons   7 months ago

Would still be worth it to stop the unconstitutional EO's from a D prez, even if hobbled by a D house.

R house would be nice to try and get tax cuts maintained, but who knows.

    2. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

Philly is 600k votes less than 2020 while rural areas are plus 100k. Biden won by 80k. This would imply a 400k vote win for Trump as Philly was the entirety of Bidens voting base.

Luckily democrats have a week to find those 600k votes.

      1. Commenter_XY   7 months ago

JesseAZ, we'll see how that translates into turnout today.

I don't use 2020 as my comparator. I use 2016. This election is a lot more like 2016 than 2020.

        1. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

If you use 2016 analysis Kamala isnt close to winning. Even Michigan or Wisconsin.

          1. Commenter_XY   7 months ago

JesseAZ, let me go back to PA for a moment. I personally think it will go for Pres Trump. It moved in October, away from Kamala. However...

The mail ballot returns for Philly and the collar counties bear watching. Team D is consistently outperforming Team R in terms of return rates.

If Sue Wild goes down, you can call the election for Pres Trump.

            1. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

See my post. Joe Biden won mail in ballots by 1.2M in 2020. They are only around +600k in Philly and rural areas are +100k compared to 2020.

The mail in ballots in Philly are way down from 2020 overall. The margin is much less than in 2020.

        2. Overt   7 months ago

I don't think you can use either 2016 or 2020. The rules were changed so much for 2020, and 2016 might as well have been pre-columbian america given how much GOTV technology has changed since then.

  17. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   7 months ago

Man Liz. Choose better economists. His first argument.

Immigrants increase both supply of labor and demand for labor. There’s no simple one-curve-shift supply and demand model to be used here. The minimum simplest model that doesn’t suck is to shift both curves outward, giving higher quantity supplied and demanded, but indeterminate effect on price, probably close to zero.

The effect of low wage workers is not linear growth at a rate of 1. You can see this in simple effective tax rates charts. Bottom 40% of workers are net drains and resourced. Yet your chosen Economist assumes demand and supply of low wage workers cancels out.

    Find better economists.

We literally have rent data. We have house build data. We see demand for housing rising faster than supply with the importation of illegals paid for by federal funds. There is a lag in the curve. This lag is effectively a cost. This cost is cumulative over time. It is a set cost. A big one.

    1. VinniUSMC (Banana Republic Day 5/30/24)   7 months ago

Probably not, doubt Joe's last minute endorsement moves the needle. Her having to sit for a 2-3 hour unscripted conversation on the other hand would probably be disastrous. She'd be too busy trying to recall the "correct" response instead of just having a conversation. That is the beauty of Joe's format, and I think her media consultant 5 min CNN talking point style would be exposed beyond all doubt.

I think that her team and friendly legacy media spinning the story as Rogan refusing the interview pissed him off quite a bit. He didn't give in to her absurd demands (less than an hour timeframe and having to travel to her instead of conducting the interview at his studio in Austin, TX), so that apparently meant he REFUSED to allow her on his show.

Honestly, that surprised me, too. I didn't really think he'd gain anything from doing so, although he was openly an RFK guy before this, so it's not like he's against endorsing politicians.

I doubt it will move the needle on anything because celebrity endorsements really don't mean much, and they always sound so contrived to begin with. The biggest laugher was Harrison Ford claiming that he doesn't like to jump into politics, even though he's often brought up his left-wing, Democrat sympathies unprompted in several interviews.

Is "rebound" what we are calling unusual vote counting this year?

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   7 months ago

No, there's always this hand-wringing about Latinos and blacks supporting the GOP candidate in greater numbers, and every time they end up voting in roughly the same pattern as before.

It's always a lot easier to blame the party that isn't in charge of your city or state than admit you're too stubborn to change your voting habits.

I dunno. The polls are apparently garbage and the markets have traditionally been better than the polls. But you may be right. But what else is there to go on?

  37. Mother's Lament (garbage)   7 months ago

I have to admit, I've held a vague hope of Trump actually breaking past the steal, but I've seen way too many retarded assholes who know better saying, "I don't vote" or "both sides" or "Trump offends my delicate sensibilities with his coarseness", to think that it's possible.
Even though they have watched a truly fascist bureaucratic autocracy seize control of the federal government since 2020 and recognized what it is, they're still too wrapped up in the old paradigms .

Why does a Canadian who doesn't live in the States, and doesn't ever plan to, give a shit about who wins?

There's a bunch of reasons. The first is obviously family. I have a brother and sister, and several cousins, and dozens of second cousins, and all their families, etc. who are all Americans. And I worry about what a continuation and emboldenment of the fascist junta running DC will do to them.
The second is the repercussions it will have on Canada as America Jr. It will embolden Trudeau. He's nearing single digits in the Canadian polls and is the most hated politician in Canadian history, which has forced him to temporarily pause his WEF agenda of crippling carbon taxes, halting energy projects, fomenting race riots and collapsing the infrastructure through uncontrolled mass immigration. A Trump win will remove his ideological ally, whereas a Harris win will encourage him to to take his foot of the brake and put the gas pedal back on the floor.

Canada is also America's biggest trading partner and vice versa. Our markets are completely integrated. For example we've been able to reach global energy markets by shipping from Texas upgraders which has been enormously profitable for Texas too. But Biden has been blocking our energy from reaching those markets for the last four years. Canada is a primary economy, but the WEF Democrats think forestry, mining, agriculture and oil production are evil and must be stopped (so does Trudeau). This will crater our economy.

Finally, America is a bulwark against globalist ambition. You've been saving the world by keeping them and Project 2030 at bay. That ends if Harris wins tonight. It's not hyperbole to say that the anti-speech policies will harden with a Harris win. That a economic and technological collapse that will leave humanity behind of where it could have been for centuries will occur.

I get it. Trumps unlikable. He's unnecessarily crude, says stupid things and isn't the brightest bulb to ever sit on the American throne (fortunately he's up against a genuinely retarded puppet).
But this isn't actually about Trump, it's about fighting the uniparty bureaucracy, and the ruling junta.
Maybe Trump will be a shitty president, but the continuation of the junta will destroy the west. This is a vote against Obama, and Dick Cheney, and Trudeau, and Macron, and Romney, and Sunak, etc.

If the Harris steal prevails then this really truly will be the most important and maybe the last election in your lifetime.

Win or lose. Vance would be wise to start selecting his casket now too.

        3. Roberta   7 months ago

What makes you so sure the electors would go for Vance as prez, rather than keeping him as veep and finding another potus? If the Democrats could be brought over so quickly to Harris, why wouldn't you think a similar dark horse might emerge among the electors?

          1. InsaneTrollLogic (Factio Democratica delenda est 5/30/24)   7 months ago

The electors are voting for the ticket, Trump and Vance, and would typically not be expected to go renegade or rouge. In some states, they have to vote for the ticket they have been pledged to by law.

If the president-elect dies after January 6, but before January 20, that is specified in 20A that the vice president-elect then becomes the president-elect. If it happens after the electoral vote on December 17, then, likewise, the VP-elect becomes president-elect.

The only really questionable time is between November 6 and December 17.

I think somebody calls that the Hillary Window.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   7 months ago

That ends if Harris wins tonight. It’s not hyperbole to say that the anti-speech policies will harden with a Harris win.

I can almost guarantee that a form of the EU's Digital Services Act will get passed if Harris wins. Hillary's been pounding the desk hard for that one, and the Dems are openly stating now that criticism of their agenda and policies is deserving of prison time.

This is why I said that the US is heading for a breakup sooner rather than later. The left is running a reboot of the Spanish commies in the 1930s, who provoked a civil war because their belief in the Manifest Destiny of marxism made them think they could do whatever the fuck they felt like without consequence. Today's left acts in the exact same manner, and why not? They haven't actually suffered consequences yet. It's why they're schizophrenically appealing to "unity" while stating that they're going to throw their political opponents in jail, while bending and even breaking rules that get the hammer thrown down on the right for even the mildest of deviations.

Anarcho-tyrannic states like the left desires have an short shelf life. Eventually, people get sick of the bullshit and lean on a strongman to put these assholes back in their place.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Atlantic, Labour is actually throwing people in jail for literal thoughtcrime, imprisoning someone for praying in their head and not saying anything. When the national divorce happens, the red areas are going to have to take a real hard look at whether continuing a diplomatic relationship with the UK and EU is actually desireable or not, especially the UK given its domination by Labour and the party's open election interference this year.

If your team loses, it will be because your team completely overplayed their hand.

We get it, you don't like illegal immigrants. But calling them 'vermin' and accusing them of being cannibals and eating pets, that is just wrong and it turns people off. Unsurprisingly, it feeds into the narrative that your team is a bunch of bigots. Weird that.

We get it, you don't like government attempts to censor 'disinformation' online. I don't either. But when it does happen, your team claims it's like the dawn of Fascist Germany. Your team completely lacks perspective on what happened. You scream "fascism!" and the rest of the world says "hmm I don't see any shortage of right-wing opinions online, how fascist could it possibly be?"

Your team has gone completely overboard with the transgender crap. We get it, you don't like gender affirming care, you don't like it when boys think that they are girls. But your team took the reaction too far, by trying to pin "transgender surgeries!!" onto every candidate that you don't like. You're using transgender individuals as a prop for demonizing everyone else. And some might say that this is a bigoted attitude to take.

Your team has just lost touch with what it's like to actually debate issues without emotion and outrage. Every argument it seems devolves into "I'm a victim" or "they are fascists" or some variation thereof. Oh and yeah, there's not even a semblance of a mention of sane fiscal policy. That horse has totally left the barn.

So instead of some reflection on how your team has turned into a bunch of emotional wrecks, I fully expect your reaction instead will be "you're the fascists", "we really are the victims", and "it's the end of America Western Civilization the universe if Team Blue wins". Oh with a heaping dose of WHATABOUT KAMAMALAA?

      1. Mike Parsons   7 months ago

"If your team loses, it will be because your team completely overplayed their hand."

No matter the result, the losing side will have only themselves to blame, and hopefully do some introspection.

Kamala with all of the support from the entire political left, MSM, celebs, to even include the RINOs and neocons now. Running against someone Biden beat with her full on joygasm campaign, unlimited money, more billionaires. If she loses it will be despite literally every advantage imaginable. It will be because she a bad choice.

If Trump loses, the R's will have to sit down and face the fact that they picked a candidate that lost to Biden, who then lost again. Picking someone who lost last time, who can be directly tied to Roe being overturned which motivates a lot of people (instead of someone new), who frankly just pisses off a lot of the country...might have been a poor move.

I personally hope the full on out and open gaming by the establishment and MSM, lawfare, and what amounts to in kind election interference for the dems backfires, and they have to face the fact that they backed the most retarded, unlikable, crippled horse in the pack. But I fully realize it could go the other way. If it does, Trump was a poor choice for the R's.

Overplaying was the whole point. A good fraction of the MAGA movement is people rebelling against constantly have to follow modern pieties about race, gender, cosmopolitanism, etc. So now they’re going to do the exact opposite, even though they don’t really believe the opposite, and FYTW.

I believe most of them act more bigoted when they’re playing this political game than they are in real life. Case in point: A guy down the hall, when talking politics, likes to say every Palestinian man should be shot and all the women raped. Then later in the week he’ll go out to lunch with a Palestinian friend.

Or a guy that says all the universities need to be shut down since even the chemistry classes are Marxism, then spends Saturday watching college football while his diploma hangs on the wall.

It’s just guy-in-a-bar stuff. Too bad they were irresponsible enough to take their joke all the way to electing someone unfit, for the sole purpose of owning the libs with his unfitness. Not suggesting they should have supported Democrats or even Libertarians. But they could’ve gone back into responsible adult mode, which they're capable of, and nominated any one of a dozen Republican senators or governors who have normal levels of self-control and dignity.

        1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   7 months ago

You are an idiot. Look back at the insane primaries in 2016. The Democrats crossed over in droves to vote for Trump because they were sure he was unelectable to the point that Bernie Sanders was in position to win the nomination before they regrouped to cut him out. Democrats put Trump on the stage with policy wonks like Cruz and Paul and their media stooges lovingly relayed every nickname and insult Trump came up with. Rather than suffering to debate an asinine, super-rich celebrity, they wisely retired from the field.

Democrats created the monster. Too bad their candidate was so unpalatable that a self-proclaimed pussy grabber could beat her.

          1. Juliana Frink   7 months ago

Not to mention that leading up to the primaries the media was giving Trump hours and hours of free publicity. Of course they wanted him to be the nominee - they figured they had someone the corrupt old harridan could beat. And I'm sure they thought the pussy grab tape was their ace in the hole.

Remember when HRC remarked she should be fifty points ahead?

            And then she LOST!

And the fascist heads are STILL exploding.

      5. Mother's Lament (garbage)   7 months ago

Where to begin? It’s amusing that you think calling out real issues is “overplaying our hand.” My family immigrated legally, navigating every hurdle and paying every fee because they loved and respected their adopted country. They’re not white by your one-drop edicts, by the way, and they didn’t get where they are by cutting corners. They honored the rules, and that’s why they’re proud to be Americans today. But it's baffling how, in your eyes, expecting others to do the same somehow makes us the bad guys.

What’s interesting is how you’re bending over backwards to dismiss concerns as "bigotry". You frame any objection to mass illegal immigration—especially from people who’ve worked so hard to follow the law—as racist, yet never stop to think that maybe the plebs just don’t want to see our communities destabilized by policies that only benefit the few at the top. And you want to lecture about fascism? Jeffy, your “Team” has spent the last four years doing its best imitation of dictators I’ve ever seen in America. Every trick in the authoritarian playbook: silencing dissent, censoring opposition, even turning the justice system into a partisan weapon.

Let’s be honest here: the constant drive to let in people who ignore immigration laws, all while vilifying those who want to keep the infrastructure from collapsing—well, it seems to me that maybe what your side really wants is a compliant serf class. People who won’t complain, who don’t understand the value of freedoms, who won’t dare stand up against the elite agenda. Fascism isn't a slur to you; it's an aspiration.

So maybe the next time you’re tempted to talk down about “fascist paranoia,” take a hard look in the mirror at the man who’s acting like a Nazi.

        1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   7 months ago

The attempt to use OSHA to force the jab on all workers was the most totalitarian act by a President since the Japanese internment. Lying fuckweasel Jeffy then tried to claim that Abbott was the dictator when he used his executive power to protect Texans from it.

No, America is the focus of globalist ambition, and has been for decades. The UN, the World Bank, NATO, G7, Nafta, and more, all globalist institutions, and rely on American leadership. The notion that America is the bulwark of globalist ambition tells me you are confused or misled.

If we were still living in a normal day and age and we were still a normal country filled with predominantly sane people, we'd be having a fairly normal election about things like tax policy, spending policy (as best as I can tell, our insane $2.1 trillion annual budget deficit never even got mentioned by anyone), and key foreign policy questions like how should be handling Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine-Iran, etc. etc.

Instead, we're having an election about whether or not we get to continue having a sovereign independent country for much longer or not, mostly because nearly half the country (the left) has gone completely stark raving bonkers.

I feel pretty good though, because our top far left Dipshit (Sarah Palin's Buttplug) is still off in hiding like the gutless cowardly little pussy that he is.

  41. Medulla Oblongata   7 months ago

People may be betting on it, but...

    THERE IS NO POPULAR VOTE.

The “popular vote” is to presidential elections what total yards of offense are to a football game.

The goal of a presidential election and a football game is to put points on the board. In the election, that’s winning states (and thus electors), in football that’s getting the ball across the goal line or through the uprights.

Having 500 yards of offense and 14 points is a losing proposition if the other team has 21 points but only 150 yards of offense! STFU crowing about “Yeah, but we ran up and down the field on them and they couldn’t move the ball!” THEY put POINTS on the board–THEY did what it takes to win the game. There’s ZERO points for total offense.

In their contest, Clinton had 658 yards of total offense (she had 68.5M votes) and Trump had 629 yards of total offense (62.9M votes). But the fact is, that despite moving the ball up and down the field somewhat better than Trump, she turned the ball over 5 times (lost 5 state that Obama carried twice) and failed to score points when it counted. Someone crying about total yards off offense is readily countered with “Scoreboard!”.

Because the rules are the rules, we can’t really look at the aggregate vote totals.

Campaigns and elections are based on the rules of the Electoral College. Everyone planned their strategy for campaigning based on garnering EC votes. Voters in locked-in states made their Election Day decisions to perhaps stay home knowing their candidate had basically already won (or lost) their state.

Based on the final score of a football game played under the current rules you can’t say who’d have won if 2 points were also awarded based on each first down gained, because team strategies would change based on the different rules in effect at the time of the game. If fouls in a basketball game resulted in 2 points being deducted from your team score rather than allowing the other team the chance to shoot 1+1 or 2 free throws, think the game would be played differently?

If the winner needed to win the popular vote nationwide, campaigns would run very differently and voters’ behaviors would be very different.

In addition, there's simply no requirement that a state even hold a presidential election.

"Clause 2. Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress; but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

Note that there's not a word about "popular vote". There's not a word about holding any elections within a state. A state's Electors are determined by whatever "Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct". If a state decides that the Governor should appoint Electors directly, they can do that. If a state decides they will allow their Congressional Representatives and Senators to each appoint an elector, they can do that. If a state decides to have an election and appoint all their Electors to the statewide winner, they can do that. If a state decides to hold elections and appoint Electors, one per district based on per-district results, they can do that. If a state decided to appoint electors by a random lottery, they could do that, too.

Electoral College magic trick...let's say that 2 years ago California passes legislation that allows the governor to simply appoint the state's electors. Perfectly Constitutional.

Had this been in effect this election, we can assume Gavin Newsome would appoint 54 Democrats for VP Harris.

The EC results remains unchanged, but the "popular vote" likely swings to Trump. With no election in California, there are no California "popular votes" to count. Based on the last contest, VP Harris would have ~9M fewer popular votes and Pres. Trump would have ~5M fewer popular votes. So Harris would have "lost" a net 4M "popular votes" while retaining all of California's electors.

    1. Michael Ejercito   7 months ago

It's now 3:42 PM EST on Election Day, and I will go out on a limb here and predict that Kamala Harris will win by a significant margin. Not a landslide, perhaps, but a solid, undeniable win with about 51% of the popular vote, to 46 or 47% for Donald Trump, with the remaining 4 or 5% going to third-party candidates. https://www.wtae.com/article/polling-location-in-lincoln-place-opens-late-when-election-judge-doesnt-arrive-on-time/62815350

The District 31, Precinct 3 polling place on Muldowney Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln Place neighborhood opened late Tuesday when the election judge did not arrive.

Poll workers did not have the supplies needed to open up the site.

According to election workers on-site, a fill-in judge was brought in, and at approximately 8:15 a.m., efforts were being made to open the polling place.

Some were in line at 6:30 a.m. to cast their ballot. Don Hoover, a voter, got their before 7 a.m. and ended up voting provisionally.

"It's probably the biggest election of the century. And, you know, this is not a time for a hiccup," he said.

Provisional ballots were also being used. An election worker told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 less than 20 people had to vote provisionally before they got the machines up and running.

Despite that, the voters impacted said they were not thrilled about the situation.

"It's not the the poll workers, it's the leaders. And that's what has to change. And that's why we're here to try to change it. And with there being, you know, all these obstacles in our way. It's really absurd," Joanne Walls, a voter, said.

A county spokesperson said provisional ballots will not be counted tonight. It will take several days to count them.

Pittsburgh 31-03 (Lincoln Place) the judge of elections did not come to the polling place this morning. The sheriff is retrieving the poll book from the judge of elections and will take it to the polling place, Lincoln Place Presbyterian Church. There are poll workers in place so upon arrival of the polling book, the site will open as normal. People are able to vote provisionally at this location now.
