Honduras makes Próspera illegal: On Friday, the Honduran Supreme Court ruled ZEDEs—special economic zones that are still bound by criminal law but able to create their own civil codes—illegal following President Xiomara Castro's yearslong campaign against them.

"Justice for the Honduran people," wrote Castro following the decision "means not selling off our territory piecemeal or privatizing our sovereignty." That, of course, is not an accurate way of representing what ZEDEs do: They essentially allow new charter cities to be established, and they get to set their own laws and regulations and typically choose to create more business-friendly conditions with less taxation.

The ruling not only means the establishment of new ZEDEs will be prohibited but also possibly complicates the operation of existing ones, like Próspera, which Reason has covered:

Próspera officials told Reuters that the Supreme Court decision could cause "visas to be canceled, the suspension of support and even a disruption in the flow of remittances" but it's unclear how exactly this will play out in practice. The Court will publish an addendum that will detail how this ruling affects Próspera and other already existing charter cities like Ciudad Morazán.

Would-be Trump assassin charged: On Tuesday, Ryan Routh—the 58-year-old gunman who was apprehended after hiding out on a golf course with a gun seemingly looking to shoot former President Donald Trump—was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami on charges that he attempted to assassinate a presidential candidate. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Routh was also charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, as well as assaulting or intimidating a Secret Service agent. Routh was already facing two gun charges, and has a long criminal record, including a 2002 conviction for possessing a weapon of mass destruction.

The case has been randomly assigned to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, the South Florida judge who earlier this year dismissed Trump's federal classified documents case—a decision that's currently being appealed.

Scenes from New York: The chancellor of New York City's public schools, David Banks, has said he will resign his post in December. "The announcement came just weeks after federal agents seized Mr. Banks's phone as part of a bribery investigation involving his brothers and fiancée," reports The New York Times, "and it promised to roil not just the nation's largest school system but also a mayoral administration already reeling from at least four separate federal corruption inquiries." More on Banks' legacy, and the decline of NYC public schools as they scrap the idea that merit or standards matter, from Reason's Matt Welch.

QUICK HITS

  • Terrorist group Hezbollah, which has been exchanging heavy fire with Israel for several days now, has started targeting Tel Aviv. "Israel activated air sirens in its commercial capital early on Wednesday as the projectile—the first fired by Hezbollah on the city—flew over central parts of the country, the Israeli military said," reports Bloomberg. Hezbollah "said it was a ballistic missile aimed at the headquarters of Mossad, Israel's external-intelligence agency, in Tel Aviv's suburbs."
  • Police in Switzerland have made several arrests (of co-conspirators) following a woman's suicide via the Sarco pod, a futuristic device that essentially looks like a tanning bed and allows the occupant to administer their own lethal dose of nitrogen gas. This is the first known use of the Sarco pod, and the person committing suicide was reportedly a 64-year-old American woman "who had been suffering from a severely compromised immune system" according to Reuters. Though many libertarians are on board with this type of thing, I cannot stomach the fact that assisted suicide is becoming increasingly normalized, with laws shifting to sanction it and new tech meeting the growing demand. (Put me in Libertarian Jail if you must!)
  • "The expectation that anyone sufficiently intelligent can grasp, and perhaps master, any conceivable subject incentivizes technologists to become conversant in as many subjects as possible.…If the Washington intellectual aims for authority and expertise, the Silicon Valley intellectual seeks novel or counter-intuitive insights," writes Tanner Greer on the Scholar's Stage. "He claims to judge ideas on their utility; in practice I find he cares mostly for how interesting an idea seems at first glance. He likes concepts that force him to puzzle and ponder." (More on the differences between D.C.'s purportedly technocratic culture, and Silicon Valley's purportedly aristocratic one, here.)
  • This guy has set out to map San Francisco's neighborhoods and give a granular look at urban blight:

After completing a map of The Mission Neighborhood I found:
- 232 Drug Addicts
- 213 Closed Businesses.
- 81 Empty/Abandoned Homes
- 50 Tents
- 37 Rvs
- 23 Prostitues
- 1 Raccoon See ???? for findings because it's MASSIVE. pic.twitter.com/h4wPAUZ0xo

Meanwhile at a Koch Industries clandestine offshore facility…

Staffer 5: Sir, reporting in as requested.

CK: Give me an update on our Springfield operation.

Staffer: Just as you predicted, sir. Switching to imports is paying off. Payroll taxes and benefits liabilities are way down causing revenue to increase. Also, closing the cafeteria seems to have no impact on productivity. These new workers must be finding others means to stay nourished. We are saving 3% with that move alone. I know keeping that cafeteria open was a pet peeve of yours.

CK: Excellent. Now, tell me about operation Squeezed Orange Juice.

Staffer 5: Sir, uh, this might make you feel blue. Act 2 was an utter failure. We are pushing a narrative and recruiting another through the usual channels.

CK: Goddammit! How the fuck?!?! Give me all the data and I’ll find out what the fuck went wrong! As damage control, get those Reason editors to gloss over it. The standard both sides game-plan. Mix in some shit about rhetoric. And have them put abortion on the top of the lizt. That might keep the lessers distracted.

Staffer 5: On it sir. Related, there is still that outlaw we need to Roundup.

CK: Jesus! I thought she was turning to the dark side!!

Staffer 5: Uh, sir. Not yet. We gave her time off to see if she comes to her senses. Maybe a few more cocktail parties will do it. In the meantime, the rest of the gang has been following the script.

CK: Keep at it. I have money riding on this with Bloomberg. What about the agitators?

Staffer 5: Sir…polling shows they aren’t working. Sir, they aren’t working!

CK: Dammit, I know they aren’t working! Who would hire them?

Staffer 5: Sorry sir. I meant that their narratives aren’t working.

CK: Shit. It was bound to happen. Dammit, phone call. I have to take this. Dismissed.

I have never ever heard anyone else ever use this unusual and unique appellation.

He tried to get the Mormon pastors to molest him, but they all refused. So now he hates the church and wants revenge.

            1. KARtikeya   10 months ago

Mormons don’t have pastors. They have bishops with no training or anything who are supposed to ask teenagers sexually explicit questions.

A lot of them turn out to be sex predators.

In most cases the abuser is treated better than the victim by the church.

That’s how I know all the commenters on here are full of shit. They don’t care about religious sex abuse because it hurts their team.

              1. Mother's Lament   10 months ago

They have bishops with no training or anything who are supposed to ask teenagers sexually explicit questions."

Gosh, that sounds just like LGBTQ-pushing school teachers and the trans "community".

                1. KARtikeya   10 months ago

No it’s different. Acknowledging gay and trans people exist is no where close to what bishops do.

Asking for details about what they do with their significant others. Asking if and how and they masterbate.

It’s almost like the church was founded by a sex predator or something.

                  1. Fire up the Woodchippers! (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   10 months ago

Did they not acknowledge your perverse desire to be molested?

                  2. Mother's Lament   10 months ago

“Acknowledging gay and trans people exist”

Except that isn’t and never was what it is about, you disingenuous fuck.

“Asking for details about what they do with their significant others. Asking if and how and they masterbate.”

So every single LGBTQ counselor and trans activist ever.

                    1. KARtikeya   10 months ago

The judeocidal hezbollah terrorists have been offered terms consistent with what muslims offer in war. Retreat north of the Litani river, and live. Or stay in place and die (or surrender to Israeli justice).

      Let's do a quick recap.

hezbollah fires 8K missiles at Israel over 11 months
The Almighty smote thousands of hezbollah terrorists in The Night of the Thousand Bris', and turned them into eunuchs
In a related development, The Almighty spoke these words through hezbollah Walkie-Talkies: Can you hear me now?
The Israelis took out hundreds of launchers and thousands of missiles
The Israelis took out much of hezbollahs leadership team

Looks like hezbollah has elected to die in place, like hamas. I've no problem sending all of hamas and hezbollah on the One-Way Paradise Train.

    2. mad.casual   10 months ago

It sounds to me like Liz is opposing the assisted rather than the suicide.

To wit, I agree. As someone who supports state-sanctioned executions and libertarianism there is such a thing as an unconscionable contract. You wanting and being able to kill yourself may be an unfettered right, but your ability to arbitrarily spin up contracts around your death is not something that can be publicly abided or supported.

If a Sarco pod fails to kill someone, can they sue? If I set up an arrangement whereby my family gets money, a recipient family standing right outside the pod gets my kidneys or heart or whatever, and I get my eternal slumber, is society on the hook for making sure the recipients pay off my family? If a former President, Rapper, or Financier's body is conveniently discovered inside a Sarco pod do we just assume everyone's innocent and/or suicide?

      1. Randy Sax   10 months ago

I'm fine with assisted in verry limited circumstances. Basically, just if you are terminally ill and physically unable to move. If you have the strength to walk up the hospital stairs and jump off the roof, you can't get assisted.

Personally, my biggest issue with legal assisted suicide is the danger that government run health care systems will push it as an option to get rid of people with non-lethal but expensive chronic medical issues.

      1. Ron   10 months ago

Canada is already doing this. Need a stair life, well have you thought about suicide. Ironically a stair lift is probably cheaper than disposing of the remains of a body

        1. Fire up the Woodchippers! (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   10 months ago

Yet the Canadian government literally did send a letter to a disabled veteran who needed a new wheelchair, encouraging assisted suicide instead of giving her the chair. And she wasn’t even considering suicide. She just wanted a new wheelchair.

        2. Social Justice is neither   10 months ago

But if you get a stair lift you can generate future costs whereas if you get MAID you stop generating healthcare costs AND you cease killing Mother Eatrh through ending your carbon emissions and footprint.

Young Democrats are abnormally nervous, depressed, bisexual, and eager to defund the police, according to a new poll from the Harvard Kennedy School of Politics.

The poll asked respondents between the ages of 18 and 29 how often they had experienced a certain emotion or problem over the past two weeks, and the results among Democrats were rather shocking. Here's how young Democrats reported feeling "at least several days" over that period:

      • 61 percent reported feeling "nervous, anxious, or on edge"

      • 57 percent said they had "trouble relaxing"

      • 55 percent said they felt "unsafe"

      • 52 percent reported feeling "down, depressed, or hopeless"

      • 49 percent said they felt "little interest or pleasure in doing things"

      • 47 percent said they experienced "loneliness"

      • 46 percent reported "feeling afraid as if something awful might happen"

      • 27 percent said they had entertained "thoughts that [they] would be better off dead" or "thoughts of hurting [themselves] in some way"

AFAIK, there's only one person whose death didn't definitively place them in the depressed victim class.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly suffer no delusions that everyone can be saved. It's just that, kinda like 'social justice', the more modifiers you put in front of 'suicide' the more you're overtly redefining it and/or obfuscate for something else (or trying to).

10 Most Devastating Effects of Getting Rid of the Department of Education

Fewer tax dollars taken by the federal government: You may now be forced to take your kids to Disneyland this year.

Children will only learn about two of the seventy-two genders: Unless they live in California, then they can still learn about all seventy-two genders AND how to smoke pot out of a banana peel all before second grade.

Child might be left behind: This has not happened once since it was declared America declared NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.

Kids will learn how to do math the actual way instead of with those weird number lines: Imagine the world returning to actual mathematics instead of the mysterious, arcane processes of Common Core.

No one to write "this page intentionally left blank" on intentionally left blank pages on standardized tests: States won't be able to handle this level of complicated bureaucratic fenangling.

4,400 unelected government bureaucrats will have to find new jobs as CNN correspondents: Nothing is more terrifying than adding more CNN correspondents.

Kids will never learn how to do anything: Just like how it was before 1979 when the Department of Education was founded.

Decentralizing government power is always a bad idea: In such a dangerous scenario, freedom may ensue.

No one will D.A.R.E. to keep kids off drugs: Illicit drugs will run rampant through American schools which is totally different from the way things are now.

2+2 will equal 4 again: Back to the horrific, oppressive days of the 1950s we go!

A Deere in Trump’s Political Headlights
A tariff is the former President’s solution to every economic problem these days
Hard to believe, but Donald Trump is giving U.S. companies a reason to think Kamala Harris might be better for their business. On Monday he gave her an assist by threatening tariffs on Deere & Co. for shifting some of its U.S.-based production to Mexico.
    .....
What Mr. Trump fails to understand is that U.S. manufacturers compete in global markets. Many customers aren’t in the U.S. and don’t care if a product is stamped “made in America.” Chinese equipment makers are increasingly vying for business in those markets.

Though many libertarians are on board with this type of thing, I cannot stomach the fact that assisted suicide is becoming increasingly normalized, with laws shifting to sanction it and new tech meeting the growing demand. (Put me in Libertarian Jail if you must!)

Nothing wrong with acknowledging that something should be allowed but not encouraged. Tobacco, for example. I hate the stench of it and think the world would be a better place if everybody stopped using it. At the same time, from a policy perspective, cigarettes and vapes should be completely legal and many states should lower their taxes on tobacco products. I support people's right to make a decision but I actively discourage it.

Prostitution is a similar thing. I think it should be legalized. I don't think paying for sex is something should remain a taboo, and women shouldn't aspire to be sex workers. It should remain a social pariah because it's an artificial connection that is a poor substitute for true intimacy between partners. People will still place a monetary value on the artifice of it, so I think it's only natural that it be traded on the free market, but just because I want it legalized doesn't mean I want it destigmatized (with apologies to ENB).

    1. rbike   10 months ago

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/indiana-judge-rules-prison-must-provide-transgender-surgery-inmate-who-killed-baby

A federal judge has ruled that it would be unconstitutional for an Indiana prison to deny a transgender inmate sex reassignment surgery following the inmate's lawsuit against the facility.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued the Indiana Department of Corrections last year on behalf of a transgender inmate, Jonathan C. Richardson, also known as Autumn Cordellionè, who was convicted of strangling his 11-month-old stepdaughter to death in 2001.

Indiana law, however, prohibits the Department of Corrections from using taxpayer dollars to fund sex reassignment surgeries for inmates. However, the ACLU argues in the lawsuit, filed on Aug. 28, 2023, that the law is a violation of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of "cruel and unusual punishment."

The surgery for Richardson, who is serving out a 55-year prison sentence for reckless homicide, "is a medical necessity," according to the ACLU lawsuit.

Judge Richard Young agreed with the ACLU's claims and ruled in favor of Cordellioné last week.

"Specifically, Ms. Cordellioné has shown that her gender dysphoria is a serious medical need, and that, despite other treatments Defendant has provided her to treat her gender dysphoria, she requires gender-affirming surgery to prevent a risk of serious bodily and psychological harm," the ruling states.

The DOC must now take "all reasonable actions" to ensure Cordellioné undergoes sex surgery, according to the order.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, a Republican, said in a post on X that his office is still reviewing the judge's decision, "but you can undoubtedly expect our office to appeal this decision."

"An Indiana inmate convicted of murder wants our taxpayers to fund their gender-altering surgery! Hoosiers do NOT want thism" Rokita said.

    1. mad.casual   10 months ago

“An Indiana inmate convicted of murder wants our taxpayers to fund their gender-altering surgery! Hoosiers do NOT want thism” Rokita said.

And even this is a good faith, but circumscribed understatement of the breadth and depth of the retardation.

"Federal judge declares existing as a man to be cruel and unusual punishment."

    2. BYODB   10 months ago

We have officially stuck our heads so far up our own collective ass that simply being born a man is considered 'cruel and unusual' punishment.

Notably, this is not cruel and unusual in any way beyond the psychosis of the inmate. Men exist, and there is no way to actually transmogrify a man into a biological woman.

As of three days ago, San Francisco has had 24 homicides this year. That is a 37% drop from last year. It is headed for its lowest homicide rate since 1960. If current trends continue, San Francisco will be among the five large cities with the lowest homicide rates in the US. The others are San Jose, San Diego, Boston, and New York City. All in blue states with strong gun laws.
