Republican House leadership is trying again to put a spending bill together as a fiscal deadline looms. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R–La.) had intended for the GOP-controlled House to vote yesterday on a new continuing resolution (CR) that would keep the government open past October 1.
But at the last minute he pulled the spending bill in the face of opposition from fiscal hawks and defense spending boosters making mutually exclusive demands.
"I'm a hell no," said Rep. Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) on X earlier this week. "Congress is spending our country into oblivion, and this bill doesn't cut spending."
I'm voting Hell No on the "Continuing Appropriations and Other Matter Act" this week.
I don't care which bright shiny object is attached to it, or which fake fight we start and won't finish.
Congress is spending our country into oblivion, and this bill doesn't cut spending.
— Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) September 9, 2024
On the flip side, reports Roll Call, were folks like Rep. Mike Rogers (R–Ala.) who said that the continuing resolution was "terrible for defense" because it didn't increase spending beyond a few extra billion for new submarines.
Another bone of contention was whether to pair the CR with the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require people to show proof of citizenship before voting. Some Republicans thought including the SAVE Act, a conservative priority that's backed by a handful of Democrats too, would line up votes behind a CR. Others, citing Senate Democrats' opposition to the SAVE Act, argued for a "clean" CR that just kept the government open.
So, under the pressure of members of his own party to cut spending and increase spending, Johnson canceled a vote hours before it was scheduled to take place.
Politico reports that Johnson is hoping to try again next week with another continuing resolution that will fund the government through the end of March and includes the SAVE Act. Meanwhile, Senate appropriators are starting to hash out a spending bill that is not paired with the SAVE Act and would fund the government until December.
IVF Funding: Meanwhile in the Senate, another awkward dustup is brewing over a bill that would force the government and private insurance companies to cover in vitro fertilization (IVF). Just such a bill sponsored by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D–Ill.)* was blocked by Republicans back in June.
At the time, Republicans had put forward an alternative (ultimately failed) measure that would prevent states from banning IVF but wouldn't require the federal government to fund the practice.
Since then, former President Donald Trump has come out in favor of requiring insurance companies to cover IVF. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.), sensing a wedge issue, is now reportedly looking to make Republicans vote on the issue again.
It puts the Senate GOP in the awkward position of either supporting a bill that bosses around insurance companies to cover a practice opposed by many pro-lifers or publicly coming out against Trump's position.
We'll have to wait and see what happens.
Scenes from Washington, D.C.: The stereotype of D.C. as a one-company town where everyone talks about policy and politics all the time is largely true. Last Tuesday, for instance, it was harder to find a bar that wasn't screening the Harris-Trump debate.
Yet even the city's crowd of news addicts knows when a business goes too far. Witness the reaction to the unveiling of a new Political Pattie's bar (slogan: "putting the lit in politics") that is set to open in the old location of U Street gay bar The Dirty Goose.
The reaction online has been…less than positive.
The tagline on the building is—no joke—"putting the 'lit' in politics" https://t.co/y7y5PPTeYm

Do you know what DC needed? A political-themed bar. It's hard to get anyone to talk about politics around here. Finally there can be a place. https://t.co/3rioEC3o4N

QUICK HITS
- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died at the age of 86 on Wednesday in the country's capital of Lima. Fujimori, a former engineer, initially won election in 1990 as an outsider populist opposed to the free market agenda of his main opponent, the classical liberal novelist (and occasional Reason contributor) Mario Vargas Llosa. Fujimori would eventually be forced from office over his government's corruption and human rights abuses, for which he was eventually jailed. He received a pardon in 2023.
- Another ex-Bush administration official, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has endorsed Kamala Harris.
- Francine, which made landfall as a Category Two hurricane and has since been downgraded to a tropical depression, slams into Louisiana, causing floods, property damage, and downing power lines.
- Meanwhile, the Bridge Fire in Southern California burns on.
- Rents are rising faster than home prices.
- The crew of SpaceX's Polaris mission performs the first-ever private citizen spacewalk.

Republican House leadership is trying again to put a spending bill together as a fiscal deadline looms.
THEY NEED TO CUT SPENDING.
But not on my stuff.
I've been told by true libertarians here that they never talk about cutting spending anymore so we need to raise taxes instead.
It's called revenue now, even if you don't actually collect it because you run off more than you collect. Revenue is way more wholesome than tax hikes. I'm going to try it next month and see if my banker believes in MMT. I'm tripling all of my prices and punching that into my financials so I can get a $2T loan.
Taxes are now called revenue, and spending is now called investing. Newspeak for ya.
Except the higher taxes never actually result in more revenue.
The Laffer Curve is real. That's why revenue from income tax increased the year after the Trump tax cuts went into effect.
Is this the next iteration of the "Chase ATM glitch"?
It's not spending, it's investment.
They need to cut spending on everything.
...it didn't increase spending beyond a few extra billion for new submarines.
I also have nostalgia for the days of conventional warfare.
Ha, original 688’s were priced just under a billion, cost estimate for next gen SSN’s are ~ 7 billion.
I think the underlying principle of the 688’s was cost efficiency. Bankrupt the Soviets trying to keep up with our expanding submarine fleet.
Now the goal seems to bankrupt ourselves with social spending and eminent bailouts of connected industries. What a changed world in just under 40 years.
"Bankrupt the Soviets trying to keep up with our expanding submarine fleet" assumes the US would threaten to strike first. Otherwise the Soviets would have no need to keep up.
Thomas Massie for president.
He is part of that yuckie freedom Caucus.
Exactly.
Who in their right mind wants freedom?
Kamalamadingdong?
Former member.
Never a member IIFC
Good points. Never an official member but often works with them on the spending cuts. Even though he was the deciding needed vote for thr CR under McCarthy under the guise he added a 1% cut if budges were correctly passed through committee. Unfortunately Congress can't bind a future Congress.
Wikipedia calls it a far right organization, lol.
Remember when Hitler wanted less government and no censorship?
Channeling Robert Reich?
You mean the Quarter Reich?
You do know that Thomas Massie voted against the Secure the Border Act of 2023. That was a bill that would require restarting construction of the border wall, limit asylum, and fund Operation Stonegarden.
He’d probably be ashamed to have your support, even though you have a great book collection.
The Secure the Border Act was a paper tiger that wouldn't have actually secured the border, kept "refugee" claims at 4,000 a day over what Obama deemed a "crisis level," and could be ignored anytime Biden or any other Democrat felt like it. It's only purpose was to get Ukraine funding through.
Funny how the open borders crowd shrugs off the fact that HR2 is still available to pass for an actual secure border.
"We gotta open the border to secure the border" -Leftists
What else did it include not a DemSalad.
Weird you have the same talking points as the Biden Harris administration.
Do you believe the Inflation Reduction Act reduced inflation as well?
You're still butthurt that I pointed out your assertions yesterday were completely bald? Lol. I've never seen you actually push any libertarian theorists or concept here. Just use the LPe to push your leftist ideas like Open Borders. See this post as an example.
219/221 Republicans voted for the bill.
211/211 Democrats voted against it, and you're against it.
Sure you're in the right party?
Which is the right party for a libertarian? Fuck off.
It's a lot easier for one rep to vote no on a spending increase than it is to get 218 to vote yes on a spending cut.
The people want what the people want.
Another bone of contention was whether to pair the CR with the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require people to show proof of citizenship before voting.
We need to fortify our elections against the need to show ID!
(Although I agree, make everything a separate bill. WTF.)
I love that we need to add "Election Integrity" to a bill in hopes of getting congress to do their job and appropriate money.
I love even more that it wasn't enough to actually get congress to do their job and appropriate money.
Do you love more that half of Congress wants zero election integrity?
...but NOBODY wants illegals to vote, amirite?
You can't horse trade as easily with separate bills.
I'll spend money on this, if you spend money on that.
win win!
Why is the SAVE Act necessary? We already have a secure, fool-proof system that requires people to check a box that they are eligible to vote. Are you saying someone found a way to bypass this unbreakable system?
Posted yesterday, but the trend continues to show the same thing.
JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day) 16 hours ago
Love how Reason has just glammed onto the corporate media narrative.
Meanwhile actual voters….
CNN panelist states how little in policy Kamala gave: Video: https://x.com/nicksortor/status/1833719053833175515
Reuters panel showed Kamala losing: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/some-undecided-voters-not-convinced-by-harris-after-debate-with-trump/ar-AA1qmVYz
CNN poll shows Trump went up in minds of voters: https://x.com/BehizyTweets/status/1833733200838856966
And NYT was even forced to write a story about how media pundits and voters probably disagree: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/11/us/politics/undecided-voters-react-debate.html
Think about why Cj and media pundits said Kamala won. Are they saying she had better policy? No. Explained her positions? No. They are saying Kamala won because her and the moderators got under Trumps skin and got him flustered.
While pundits and anti trumpers have this as their primary concern, as seen in Reuters and NYT interviews that is not the concerns of actual voters.
Undecided voter after voter had the same response. Kamala didn't explain her policy and they didn't want a continuation of the last 4 years. This is why the NYT is warning voters and pundits don't see eye to eye.
Some interesting analysis done by people like Frank Luntz show undecided voters reacting to the same messages as conservative voters who watched the debate. Their care abouts are the economy and illegal immigration, topics Kamala absolutely failed on.
So why pundits are patting Kamala on the back for getting under Trumps skin, voters seem to be rejecting this as a win. Even the CJ article yesterday was focused on getting under Trumps skin with almost no policy analysis.
Most of the policy that Kamala did discuss was just more government spending that will lead to inflation, like 25k down payments for first time homeowners. Voters aren't for this.
They don't care what voters want. Harris will surge @ zero-dark-thirty and take the election. The only social media to allow skepticism will be X, and the Biden admin will shut it down and arrest Musk before inauguration day.
There are no more fair elections, the media is as corrupt as any Soviet bloc publication, the swamp has weaponized law enforcement, and finally, the republic is dead.
Trying to politically succeed in the current system is futile. There's only one box left.
Turns out DHS not only never stopped funding censorship groups but in the last year increased spending on them again.
Dems are praising Brazil for their X crackdown.
Globalists asking for global speech laws.
Don't be coy. What's that last box?
Your mom around closing time at a Vagos party?
He is a Democrat. Probably scared there is a single last box of wine left.
Glad to see you quickly back down from the tough guy rebellion talk once someone challenges you. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt if your weekend militia buddies started to believe their own smack talk.
The folks who will ultimately kick your ass, if/when you statists succeed in painting them into a corner, are suburban, veteran fathers protecting their families. Not weekend larpers. You idiots have no fucking clue. And its not going to be individuals. If anything happens, it'll be a fallout between states. You morons salavate over this fantasy just as much as any "deplorables". Piss off.
...
Of course, because if you're already deep into the subject matter, what else are you going to score by but form? You knew the candidates weren't going to tell you anything you didn't already know, so all you do is score the "game".
...a bill that would force the government and private insurance companies to cover in vitro fertilization (IVF).
My hatred of other people's children extends to test tube babies, so I'm a no on this. It's not my fault that people put their cell phones in their front pockets.
My insurance company does cover puberty blockers, so there is still hope for a future with fewer children.
Woman Who Made Career Singing About Her Bad Choices Endorses Kamala
https://babylonbee.com/news/woman-who-made-career-singing-about-her-bad-decisions-endorses-kamala
She brings in that highly valued tween girl voting block.
Dems finally locked up the childless woman vote.
I don't like her. Has nothing to do with her music, I've never heard it nor do I care to. Has nothing to do with her personality or politics. Don't care. It's out of pure spite and jealousy. The verry first year she gives a shit about football her team wins back to back superbowls. Some of us have been wallowing in misery for DECADES. We've been out there cheering and hoping and being let down year after year after year after year.
Feel your pain as an Arizona fan. All wr have us Blake Shelton cheering for us.
Tell me about wallowing in misery over football. Last year was the first year I’ve ever had any hope for them. Unfortunately, they lost the NFC championship. This year looks good right now too. Hell, they even beat the Super Bowl winner twice. 🙂
Bite some kneecaps.
If it's not going to be my Steelers in the Super Bowl, I'm hoping for a NY Jets vs Detroit Lions big game. It would be nice to see two teams whose fans have stayed loyal during some really bad times get rewarded. Plus, I don't hate either team. I just don't want to see another Chiefs Super Bowl (and as little of Taylor Swift as possible).
Santorio Holmes landed out of bounds.
Come on. There are close up, zoom-ins that clearly show the toes inbounds. (Funnily enough, though, I've seen photos on social media where Cardinals fans will post a different catch by Santonio from a different game. It looks like the same kind of reception, but in this game he was out of bounds. The grass in the end zone of the the Super Bowl was painted red, but the fake photo has the grass yellow, as that game was a home game in Pittsburgh.)
I feel for you though. That must have been hard to watch. Warner played a great game, and Fitzgerald was clutch, like always. Would have loved to see Fitzgerald get a ring during his career--just not against my team.
I've been arguing for almost two decades now that Super Bowl XLIII is the best Super Bowl ever, as it had two massive, game-changing plays at the end of each half.
Blame Kyle Shanahan choking in yet another Super Bowl for that.
He's a good coach, but Jesus, is he his father's son--gets way too clever for his own good instead of sticking to what's working.
Since then, former President Donald Trump has come out in favor of requiring insurance companies to cover IVF.
How about leaving it to the insurance companies?
The old ladies should get kids they way they used to in the old days, get your husband to fuck some young filly and intimidate her into giving you the kid.
The only way to bring healthcare costs down is to force everyone to fund any procedures anybody wants. Unless you aren't vaccinated then no healthcare.
The drugs to treat life long autoimmune diseases won't sell themselves.
This is the most mind boggling part of it all. Does anyone really want to see how expensive IVF can get once insurance is picking up the tab? IVF is already crazy expensive, but a average cost for a full cycle of IVF with drugs and surgeries and the whole nine yards will set you back about as much as a single trip to the ER will bill your insurance.
As someone who has spent the last six years doing IVF and just recently had a bout with a kidney stone, seeing those two bills side by side could make a grown man cry.
But so few in the population will go for IVF that those effects are insignificant in the aggregate.
BTW, this week I got a scare on my hospital bill. Turned out they'd tried to bill my old, discontinued insurance, even though I'd presented my new card on admission (which is why they didn't tell me about this co-pay then).
The Machiavelli in me admires this position of Trump’s. It’s an insignificant expenditure, but it seriously undercuts anybody’s belief that he’s a fetus fetishist, because he knows the procedure entails discarding a lot of human zygotes. Yet it would be opposed on “human life” grounds only by the few fanatics who want to protect even the zygotes, not by the average anti-abortionist. It’s brilliant positioning.
And if you were wondering, yes the Machiavelli overrules the libertarian in me, same way I admire clever or daring victimful crimes.
...it was harder to find a bar that wasn't screening the Harris-Trump debate.
Your job as a journalist, Christian, if that is your real name, is not to get drunk without also subjecting yourself to the various lies and prevarications from our next president.
From the same fact checkers claiming Trump lies way more. A narrative jeffsarc was pushing to defend the moderators.
Correction, Sept. 11
The original version of this story mischaracterized as false Donald Trump's statement accusing Kamala Harris of supporting “transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison” As a presidential candidate in 2019, Harris filled out a questionnaire saying she supported taxpayer-funded gender transition treatment for detained immigrants.
https://time.com/7019747/harris-trump-debate-cover/
I asked this yesterday but don't two states ignore the born alive rule?
5 states, including Minnesota, don’t require palliative care for infants born alive.
The funny thing is Trump was directly referencing an interview with Ralph Northrom who stated exactly that, the doctors can kill a bird alive infant. So Trump was giving the citation in his response.
And yet the proggies here were calling it a “lie”, yesterday. Oh well, I imagine that they tricked Sarckles.
Of course they did. The entirety of his knowledge is reading link descriptions off a simple Google search.
A new report came out showing 8 born alive infants allowed to die in Minnesota.
https://pjmedia.com/scott-pinsker/2024/09/11/abc-moderators-were-lying-eight-aborted-babies-were-born-alive-and-then-left-to-die-in-minnesota-n4932458
Can’t wait to see Sarc’s response today. How much straw you think he’ll try to use again?
Facts changed. You're a conspiracy theorist.
Jeffy will lawyer the definition of "born", and if that doesn't work he'll focus on "alive", and if that doesn't work he'll reword what Trump said into something else completely and then argue about that.
Sarc will be totally fooled.
How much straw you think he’ll try to use again?
You guys used it all up.
“NO, U!”
You somehow manage to obtain enough straw every day to build a subdivision of tract straw houses.
This comes from someone who has entire arguments with what I supposedly think about something, without me even being present.
Cite? Are you talking about your past statements again? Statements you claim never happened and literally lie about having never made?
Can always count on Jesse telling me what I think, arguing against it, and calling me a liar when it turns out I don’t really believe the nonsense he made up and then rehearsed arguing against on his drive to his government contractor “job”.
Count on Sarcasmic to say a whole bunch of horrible shit when drunk and then pretend he didn't the next day. This is why we bookmark his posts, because he constantly lies.
Sarc: When you posted a couple months ago that if Kamala was nominated you would vote for Trump, were you lying then, or are you lying now about voting for Chase?
Did you ever stop beating your wife?
What did the courts say about your ex-wife's allegations again? What did child protection services say when your daughter called them again?
Walz's Minnesota does.
Northam was going to pass a bill allowing that in Virginia, until he and Kathy Tran actually admitted on the air that it codified post-magic birth canal trip infanticide.
And I know Jeffy remembers that because I got in an argument with him about it, so watch him pretend that it doesn't count.
Hey, I'm also for castrating illegal immigrants.
Only if they are trans.
...that is set to open in the old location of U Street gay bar The Dirty Goose.
Which Britches only knows by reputation.
I'm willing to bet that opposition has less to do with the political theme than the idea that the LGBT mob had conquered the location and it belongs to them in perpetuity
Which the LGBT community would only do by reputation, not by actually patronizing the place and keeping it in business or otherwise actually occupying and doing something with the space like the filthy fucking Irish.
Chaney, now Gonzalez...#War Criminals for Kamala

Endorsement tally
Kamala: Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzalez, Taylor Swift and Vladimir Putin
Trump: A Kennedy, former DNC chair Tulsi Gabbard, the Teamsters, and yesterday, Joe Biden.
What a time to be alive. The earth is 4.54 billion years old and you get to be living in this one.
"Another ex-Bush administration official, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has endorsed Kamala Harris."
I'm simply shocked that the beltway RINO's we've been decrying as establishment hacks for decades are lining up behind the establishment anointee. Shocked.
Just as shocked as Captain Louis Renault.

NEW: Venezuelan gang members are threatening to k*ll a property manager in Aurora, CO & are accused of child prost*tution according to a new bombshell legal letter.
The new revelation comes from a Denver law firm who was hired by a property manager in Aurora.
The gang is being accused of engaging in assaults, threats of murder, extortion, and child prost*tution as officials refuse to take action.
"This is our business plan... If [the property manager] doesn't like it, we'll fill him with bullets," the illegals reportedly said.
"The evidence we have reviewed indicates that gang members are engaging in flagrant trespass violations, assaults and battery, human trafficking and s*xual abuse of minors, unlawful firearms possession, extortion, and other criminal activities, often targeting vulnerable Venezuelan and other immigrant populations," said former US Attorney T. Markus Funk.
The firm represents the lender for Whispering Pines Apartments on 1357 Helena Street according to CBS News.

Are you denying he did it? I did not say no one else did it. I said I would like to hear Trump’s reasoning for doing so while him and his campaign is out there railing against Venezuelans. Others are expected to lay out detailed plans and explain why they changed their tune on a subject. Not Trump…he can have “Concepts of a plan” for 9 fucking years, say I can end the war in the middle east and Ukraine if elected before he even takes office (his claim), but no explanation how, and if he can do so before he takes office then why doesn’t he do so now?
The gang was allowed in under Biden. Not Trump.
Try and keep up.
The dates of their initial apprehension and release are in the comments here.
From your link:
U.S. President Donald Trump shielded tens of thousands of Venezuelan migrants from deportation Tuesday night,
These were people already here whose TPS protections were set to expire. It was not to, in your words, grant Venezuelans TPS on his way out the door. They were already under TPS protections.
Is this you shrike?
I wish your side would stop lying that you don't support open borders, and in fact love seeing violent immigrant gangs settle here because your side loves chaos.
because your side loves chaos.
Yeah, until the right creates a little chaos. Then it's worse than 9/11 and 12/7 combined.
1) “This isn’t happening.”
2) “Okay, it’s happening, but it’s not as bad as it’s being portrayed.”
We are here
3) “Yes, it’s happening, and that’s a good thing.”
Speaking as someone who lived and went to school there, the first thing to bear in mind is that north Aurora (basically, the areas north of Mississippi Avenue and west of Tower Road, give or take) has been a shithole for a long time. It was a decent part of town up until the mid-80s, when a bunch of black California gangbangers started moving to the Denver metro to expand their drug networks, which naturally melted over into Aurora. The closure of Lowry Air Force Base and Fitzsimons Army Medical Base in the 90s accelerated the decline because the military families were the one thing holding the rot back.
Starting in 2000, that part of town began absorbing massive numbers of Latin American immigrants, mostly from Mexico. The gang activity actually subsided, for the most part, because the Mexicans were mostly lower-class workers, not cartel members, and their mass numbers ended up pushing out (or killing) a lot of the black gangs to the point that Aurora ended up shutting down the gang task force it had in the 90s to deal with the Blood and Crip offshoots. Those shitheads are still around, but not in the numbers they were during the Clinton years–there’s actually fewer black kids at my high school now than there were when I went there in the mid-90s. It’s about 75% Hispanic now. It still wasn't a good part of town, but that's mostly because lower-class people aren't that great at keeping their neighborhoods in decent shape and they tend to look trashy as a result.
The thing about TdA is that they pose the same public safety threat that the black L.A. OGs did when they came to Colorado. They are next-level violent and as bad or worse than MS-13; everything cited in that report is the same shit they do everywhere they operate. They’re operate with impunity south of the border because they will target and kill public officials, police, and their families if anything is done to threaten their operations.
The people in charge trying to minimize this are fucking stupid. TdA are a goddamn social cancer. You absolute cannot allow them to set up any kind of base of power in the US, much less somewhere like Aurora which had been relatively quiet for about 15 years or so up until the pandemic sent public safety into the toilet.
The corruption going on here is next-level, too. It’s not just the denials on the part of the Aurora, police, and state officials and their media lapdogs. It’s the fact that this was enabled through government largesse via the Biden administration into open borders NGOs to conduct mass settlement into a community that’s nowhere near equipped to handle them. It isn’t any different than the seditious Chamber of Commerce types who helped mass-drop 20,000 Haitians into a town of 58,000 people. “Fuck the people living here currently, we have space to be compassionate and wE NeED thE WOrkeRS.”
Also, the media calling Aurora a "sleepy town" don't know what the fuck they're talking about. Aurora is one of the largest cities in the Denver metro and is extremely spread out for a western suburb. There hasn't been anything "sleepy" about it for about 50 years.
I suspect the main reason the Regime despises Trump and Orban so much isn't their supposed authoritarianism, but because they're quite vocal about not going along with the Third World-to-First World pipelines these people have set up. That's a threat to the neo-feudalist global managerial regime these people have dreamt about since the end of World War II.
I would agree. Look at how they hate LePen, Wilders, the AfD, and others like them. It’s a distinct pattern.
Look at how pissed off they are at Bukele for putting the gangs in jail. Those were people that needed to be kept roaming around to continue making El Salvador unstable enough to incentivize further migration north.
You don’t have migrant trains from stable countries, and putting these thugs in prison and throwing away the key is the easiest way to accomplish that stability. The Open Society types thrive on civic unrest and instability in the Third World because it means they can promote more mass migration to the First World, without having to worry about actually solving “root causes” in the former.
Also,
Joe Biden: A 10 yr. old girl was raped in OH and had to go to IN for an abortion.
“Evil” Conservatives: That's incredible/horribly unbelievable! Says who? There haven’t been any news reports.
Donald Trump: Illegal immigrants and immigrant gangs are plundering the private property and the public commons we’ve sworn to natives, voters, and taxpayers that we’d protect.
“Good” Progressives: Nuh uh!
To say nothing about how the former narrative evaporated once the facts began pointing to the latter narrative.
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori died at the age of 86 on Wednesday in the country's capital of Lima.
No credit for being the first minority president of Peru?
Citizen complaints regarding Springfield Ohio are false. But despite that government is sending 2.5M to help the false issues that are false, just listen to media.
https://legalinsurrection.com/2024/09/ohio-gov-dewine-sending-troops-2-5-million-to-springfield-due-to-surge-of-haitian-migrants/
Local story.
The citizens there filed a petition to remove the entire local government.
No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the Hatians.
But aren't the snakes even worse?
Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
But then we're stuck with gorillas!
No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
When do murder hornets get introduced?
After the zika mosquitos.
What is that from? I know I've heard it before. Was it the Simpsons?
Citizen complaints regarding Springfield Ohio are false
Speaking for myself: The citizen complaints are not false. The only complaints I reject until presented with convincing evidence are the pet eating ones. I was up front yesterday acknowledging that the Haitian immigrants are overwhelming and problematic in Springfield.
My challenge is renewed. Show me a video of a Haitian killing and eating an animal or a 1st hand account and make me look like a fool.
The pet eating piece is a miniscule part of the town hall complaints amplified by the media in order to dismiss the entirety if the complaints.
Amplified by Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance, you mean.
That weird rumor is only a national story because conservatives decided to run with it
Just like that "weird rumor" that there were no Venezuelan gangs in Aurora.
The pet eating piece is a miniscule part of the town hall complaints amplified by the media in order to dismiss the entirety if the complaints.
Finally! WE AGREE! And if the take you have here was the story yesterday, I'd be my usual quiet self about it.
This is why I'm really digging in. To get people that I feel aligned with to stop spreading this and other fringe conspiracy type claims that lack strong evidence making everything else they have to say easily dismissed.
Another ex-Bush administration official, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has endorsed Kamala Harris.
She's looking worse and worse the more this goes on.
Rather elegant proof that the Bush Republicans were uniparty rather than conservative.
...downgraded to a tropical depression, slams into Louisiana, causing floods, property damage, and downing power lines.
Make levees not love.
At least it's just sad now.
It's not just sad, it's in full-blown depression. Quick! Someone call Jon Bon Jovi!
Rents are rising faster than home prices.
Thank God government funding of residences for illegals has no effect on rents. May be awkward for Reason.
Indeed, how can importing 10M or so illegal aliens with little income NOT affect the availability (supply) of low-income rental units? Supply crunch pushes prices, econ 101.
Little income?
They pay thousands to get here, then buy cars (but not insurance).
Apparently they’re given those cars by charities. You know all those donate your car places? They’re the same assholes giving away those same cars to these illegal aliens.
Time for me to illegally immigrate to the states. Free car, food, housing + $2k a month.
I’m kinda brownish.
Meanwhile, the Bridge Fire in Southern California burns on.
Oprah must want to buy San Gabriel Canyon on the cheap.
No water to put out the fire.
An ocean of water, but no permits to use electricity to pump it to the fires.
Meanwhile, next door in Orange County, the 8500-acre Airport Fire was caused by a county fire prevention crew:
"An Orange County Public Works team putting together a project meant to help prevent fires is believed to have started the fire, reported Deseret Sun, a part of the USA TODAY Network."

Those injured by the airport fire were assisted by EMS who quickly killed the injured.
All were given efficiency awards.
Why's it called the Bridge Fire? What does it bridge? Or, what bridge was it associated with?
"What's the deal with the bridge fire? I've heard of burning bridges but this is ridiculous!"
Rents are rising faster than home prices.
THERE'S ALWAYS THE PODS.
The crew of SpaceX's Polaris mission performs the first-ever private citizen spacewalk.
Damn you, Britches! You learned to add citizen after private so I can't make my jokes!
Anyway, I hope private citizen gets promoted to corporal citizen after this.
Are you even the government? How can you determine citizenship?
face of opposition from fiscal hawks and defense spending boosters making mutually exclusive demands.
Liz, just pointing out that these are not mutually exclusive. You can cut overall spending while increasing defense spending. Just highly unlikely to get that bill passed. You could say cut all funding to Dept of Ed and fund an extra 100 billion to defense and still have 100 billion left (simplified anyway, may still need to fund former Ed employees pensions or the cost of shutting down would eat into some of the initial savings).
Still not Liz.
Damn, I'd have been more snarky if I knew it was Britches.
Now is your chance to be more snarky.
"Still not Liz."
I suspect she's taking a few days off, so she doesn't have to participate in the "But, Trump..." order sent down from above.
I generally find speculation futile.
What if I say there is an anonymous source saying it?
Rats. Refresh before posting. Bah.
Not technically incompatible.
You can cut overall spending and increase defense spending.
Though it's stupid calling it defense spending. It's really military spending and almost entirely offensive, in every meaning of the word. Nothing defensive about aircraft carriers, amphibious landing ships, and long range bombers.
Which leads to the slightly off-topic question of why China wants aircraft carriers. They're pointless against Taiwan, since the mainland with air bases is only 100-200 miles away, and China is a territorial nation much more than a maritime nation, just like France; if border wars with their far more numerous land neighbors ever heat up, the only use of their navy is a ready source of manpower to turn into soldiers. They also brag about their carrier killer missiles, which would seem to imply their own carriers are just expensive targets for US carrier killer missiles.
The best defense is a good offense, said someone sometime.
I’m tired of wasting so much money being the world’s fucking policeman, and doing it in typical corrupt police style.
WW II in Europe started because Britain and France refused to enforce the putrid Versailles treaty they had shoved down Germany’s throat.
Britain turned the western WW I from a repeat of the 1870 Franco Prussian local war into a four year mess because they thought they had to defend Belgium. Kaiser Wilhelm II started both east and west into war by egging on Austria-Hungary into turning a stupid assassination into a Balkans war which the Russian Tsar thought needed expanding.
Both world wars in Europe were European wars, and Woodrow Wilson, Supreme KKK Mugwump, and FDR made them American wars. Fuck them with a burning torch.
WW II in the Pacific only involved the US because of that damned 1898 war with Spain and ending up with colonies in the Philippines, Guam, and other Pacific islands, and racist US laws baiting racist Japanese into fighting racist Chinese.
Fuck the lot of them. Sure, Putin’s a bad guy following the same playbook as Hitler, but Ukraine is just as corrupt (I laugh at debates over which is more corrupt in world rankings, as if it matters which one is #170 and which is #190). But I’m tired of propping up NATO so they can shit all over American companies with billion dollar fines because they aren’t forking over enough taxes, and I’m tired of all their fucking greenies destroying their economies so they can’t defend themselves and expect us to save them from Big Bad Putin.
I lived on a carrier for 3.5 years, it was a great adventure. They are purely offensive weapons, and only 1/3 are at sea most of the time. That’s useless bang for lots of useful bucks that I’d rather keep to myself. What do we need long range stealth bombers for when ICBMs are the real deterrent, so I am told.
Cut the goddam spending. Stop forcing people to pay into that world-class Ponzi scheme, Social Security. If you want to force people to save for pensions, force them into indexed mutual funds and at least be more efficient at it. I ran calculations of my SSA deductions and I could withdraw 5% right now every year and have triple what SSA would pay out. The index funds for the last decade or so have grown by 10% (DJIA) and 13% (S&P 500), although I haven’t checked since COVID and Bidenflation, but it’s a damned better bet than SSA.
US Laws made Japan invade China, because of racism? Where did you go to school - Zinn University?
Where did I say that?
Oh, I see. You took the line to confirm your bias instead of actually reading it, and you don’t know much real history.
Go back to 1853/4. The US was late to the game getting a toehold in China, and wanted a piece of the action, so they sent warships to Japan, a notoriously self-isolated nation, to force it to open trade with the US. There was also a US “open doors” policy regarding China, a sour grapes reaction to being so late to taking pieces of China.
Japan eventually took the hint, industrialized faster than anybody had expected, and in 1895 defeated a piss poor Chinese nav to grab parts of China. You probably don’t know much about Chinese / Japanese relations either, but the Japanese resented getting so much of the culture from China (Buddhism, writing) yet Japan is, from the geographical point of view of China, literally the land of the rising sun, so the Japanese took it upon themselves to educate the Chinese as to their proper place in the Asian world.
In 1905, Japan trounced Russia and scared the shit out of the west. Japan thought such marvelous colonial endeavors aping western colonial endeavors deserved praise. All they got was immigration and trade restrictions.
Naturally such racist white reactions in the equally-xenophobic Japanese invoked their own racist attitudes, and since Japan has very few natural resources, they decided to form the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity sphere, where they would lead Asia in replacing their European masters with Japanese masters.
And part of the reason for this turning against the West included a nasty and unconstitutional 1924 California law banning Japanese from owning land, or something similar, along with national immigration restrictions, all based on racism.
Now do you understand anything?
Kaiser Wilhelm II started both east and west into war by egging on Austria-Hungary into turning a stupid assassination into a Balkans war which the Russian Tsar thought needed expanding.
To be fair, A-H hardly needed much egging on. The head of their military, General von Hotzendorf, had a hard-on for years to bring the Serbians to heel, and they mainly just want to make sure Germany would back them up if the Russians decided to play.
The real irony is the whole war started over the killing of a noble that Franz-Joseph didn't even like all that much, even if the guy was his heir. He probably would have been perfectly happy to declare another heir if Conrad hadn't been pounding the table to go full tard-rage on Serbia.
Yes, there were plenty of hot heads foaming at the mouth. I blame the Kaiser mostly because while he didn't believe he was a god himself, he believed that God would not let him ever make a mistake, and he just flailed around like a bull in a China shop. I don't particularly like Bismarck, but at least he planned everything very carefully, and the Kaiser just dismissed him as no better than a peasant and charged ahead.
SSA COLA for 2024 is 2.5%.
Which leads to the slightly off-topic question of why China wants aircraft carriers.
Look up "Great Power Competition" and you'll get a good idea of why they're looking to expand their long-range naval fleet.
Yes, and the rest of it, like bragging about how their carrier killer missiles make carriers obsolete?
The best part is that they’re probably making all that shit with technology that we’ve been giving them for the last 30 years.
Like I've said before, Nixon opening up relations with China is going to go down as the worst long-term strategic mistake in the country's history. It may very well be the thing that ultimately leads to the US's demise, all because the Uniparty got dollar signs in their eyes, and stupidly thought they could exploit China by driving a wedge between them and Russia. It's also not a coincidence that these people absolutely worship China's command economy and want to take that world-wide.
My first choice in real politik would have been to recognize both. If either one got snotty and said no deal, fine with me, don't recognize them.
My real choice would be to cancel all treaties, close all embassies, and tell other countries that if they want American tourists, deal with it on their own. If they want to visit here, deal with it on their own. It's none of our government's business what Americans do outside our borders. If they want to hike the Iran/Iraq border or distribute Bibles inside North Korea and get kidnapped, the US government won't pay their ransom or bluster with carriers to demand their freedom.
Also specifically the Straits of Mallaca (see Singapore if spelling wrong). China is dependent on ships reaching their shores. If the USA, in response to a Taiwan invasion, cut off more than half their energy supply with a naval blockade; they'd have some issues.
Operating carriers in such confined waters is an expensive way to enrich the ocean floor.
As an example of how fragile carriers are as offensive weapons, the Pearl Harbor raid only lost 29 airplanes shot down, somewhere around 100 were too badly damaged to undertake any more missions. This is from about 400 planes on six carriers. That's one third incapable of further fighting, after one surprise wave and one followup wave.
I know you aren't suggesting any Chinese invasion, but one of my favorite laughs about armchair warriors is the idea that the Japanese could have invaded Hawaii. Not only would their carriers have been useless after just a couple more raids, they didn't have enough shipping to get an invasion force that far from Japan. Then there were the army generals at the time who warned the press to beware of Japan invading California. I don't know if they were really that ignorant, but the press who lapped it up were just plain stupid.
It was theoretically possible for Japan to invade and take Oahu but they could not supply their forces and therefore could not hold it for any length of time. Such an opera t ion would have required the cooperation of the Japanese Army, and they were more concerned with China as the main theater of their war. Yamamoto barely got their cooperation for Midway. That ultimately cost him two of his six main carriers for that operation by getting them damaged supporting the Army’s priorities in the Coral Sea.
The invasion of Oahu would have required cancelling every single other operation, and they did not have the shipping to actually keep their army supplied with fuel and ammunition for more than a few days. Food? They could have captured that if they let civilians starve, and too may of them were of Japanese ancestry for starvation to be a palatable option. They could no more invade Hawaii than we could invade China right now. Raid it, commit mass suicide, sure. But invade, as in keep and hold long enough for reinforcements? Not a chance in hell.
"Republican House leadership is trying again to put a spending bill together as a fiscal deadline looms."
If it was D leadership, they'd call it the "Limit Illegal Immigration" bill and then claim that the R's don't care about illegal immigration! Giggles got away with that a day or so ago.
Her side and their center-right lapdogs have been claiming for months that Trump killed "the absolute best bipartisan immigration bill in 20 years!" for several months now, even through anyone who actually read the bill knew it was a piece of shit that deserved to be rejected on its merits, and that Trump had absolutely zero to do with that.
With both abortion and IVF being big stories recently I’m surprised we don’t see more people calling for adoption. Two birds – one stone.
Because adoption would grow the population. They want depopulation and degrowth.
Then why do they want IVF?
Fits into their transhumanism/post-humanism man-god ideological fetish.
Sometimes multiple embryos implant and then they need to do selective abortions.
Anything to increase the number of abortions is good.
It’s for professional urban women who want to freeze their eggs/embryos in case they get tired of cats
They're only in it for the baby showers.
Well, that's an interesting theory.
The problem with adoption in this country is that most prospective parents want a baby. So babies in the system get adopted out relatively quickly (the biggest hurdle is often permanently severing the parent's rights).
Older kids, particularly teenagers, however? Most would-be parents don't want an older kid. Especially since most will come with conditions related to the parents, trouble stemming from abuse and neglect, and so-on.
Simply (and coldly) put, it's a supply/demand problem. The demand is for babies not born with problems, the supply is mostly older kids with problems.
And that's before we even get into the ethics/philosophy of whether it's moral to prioritize raising a child of your own flesh/blood over raising a kid that is, biologically, someone elses'. Regardless of how anyone feels, there is a strong preference among most humans to "have" and raise their "own" baby, then someone else's.
My comment was aimed more towards currently pregnant women who don’t want their babies and couples who do. The teen adoption thing is a whole ‘nother ball of wax.
My good buddy was adopted and taken home by his non-biological parents the day he was born. The whole thing was set-up before the birth.
You know what? Go for it.
I'm sure that women considering abortion will be shocked to learn that adoption is a possibility.
Similarly, I'm utterly convinced that the people looking at IVF have never heard of adoption or looked into it.
I'm sure you are taking an entirely new and unheard of look at this whole thing.
""Another ex-Bush administration official, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, has endorsed Kamala Harris.""
I'm not surprised that someone who supports indefinite detention and waterboarding supports Harris.
Yeah, well she already has Dick Cheney’s endorsement, so another one will help prop her up amongst the deep staters and war boners.
Besides, I have no doubt that Kamala actually would support waterboarding if she thought it would make her look tough.
Endorsement Watch
KDH:
Alberto Gonzalez - War criminal, torture lawyer.
Dick Cheney - War criminal, shot friend in the face
Taylor Swift - Oversold pop star well past expiration date.
Bill Kristol - Discredited neocon turncoat
Randi Weingarten - Union thugess who held children hostage
DJT:
Nikki Haley - Failed opponent and neocon warmonger
Amber Rose - Freakish underage stripper
Roseanne Barr - Obnoxious fired racist "actress"
Hulk Hogan - Made his name acting trumpish...as entertainment.
Rod Blagojevich - Most corrupt governor in Illinois history
Aside from possibly Haley, the group on the bottom would be way more fun to hang out with.
Haley would be fun I bet once she’s had a few drinks. She kinda has a milfs gone wild vibe to her
I posted this above.
Gotta disagree about Blago. On the scale of Illinois corruption he was entry level. I didn't like the guy and I voted against him. But the Obama DOJ took him out not because he was corrupt. They took him out because he was a liability to the chosen one who was knee deep in Chicago corruption. Prison changes people and Blago has first hand experience with the Democrat deep state. He has a lot in common with Trump in that respect.
Same - he's maybe not even top 5.
How many Illinois governors have gone to prison? At one point it was several in a row.
I think it's easier to count the ones who haven't.
Gaear, Minadin: Sorry for misunderestimating Illinois corruption, if you live up there you obviously know it better.
Don't forget Tulsi Gabbard and RFK Jr.
Bring back Mediocre Liz
IIRC, Johnson only has the speaker job because last year McCarthy put country ahead of party and got a budget passed, and Republicans threw a hissy fit.
It'll be interesting to see if puts party ahead of country and fails to work towards a compromise that can pass the Senate, or puts country ahead of party and gets similarly ousted.
So it's patriotic to sell out to the Dems and basically give them everything they want and almost nothing you want in order to pass a budget that will increase spending quite a bit?
Yeah, sure, why not?
Just like it's "patriotic" every time a Democrat Speaker of the House works out a compromise with the Republican Senate and Republican president. Compromising to keep the government running is kinda the norm here.
Acting like 2023 was unique in that regard is weird.
“Anything which resists the Democrats is putting party over country and is weird."
Funny how “country before party” is only ever supposed to go in one direction, for the PR benefit of one party in particular.
"Country before party" is also a fatuous catchphrase that's little more than a re-hashed, neo-Maoist unity-criticism-unity dialectic.
There's nothing funny about your projection.
McCarthy was not the first Speaker of the House to compromise with a Senate and President of the opposing party, and it's very doubtful he'll be the last.
Y'all have short memories.
Your side also loves indulging in “I know you are but what am I” retorts when your dialectic is called out.
Speaking of short memories, do you also believe that was the first time the government was at risk of shutdown as well?
> a practice opposed by many pro-lifers
Question: How many people really oppose IVF? Like, is it a substantial number?
This really feels like something nobody mainstream actually gives a shit about but that the Ds can use to motivate people to get out to vote. Like the latest Pepe the frog or OK sign. Or maybe less 4chan than that and it's the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" question.
I may be wrong. Lots of people against abortion here, so tell me. Is hating on IVF really a thing?
You’ve got it right. I saw a poll that said 82% think it’s “morally right”, 10% think it’s “morally wrong”, and 8% don’t know.
Since there are still many people who don’t necessarily want to use the police on everything they personally think is wrong, we can estimate that the percentage of people who want to ban IVF is well under 10%.
So yeah, mainly Democrat fearmongering.
And among those opposed, it's at least sometimes not the IVF per se, it's the disposal of the unused fertilized embryos.
If it's not a thing, then all those people claiming they believe that "life begins at conception" are lying.
You mean the 12% who support abortion restrictions in all cases? Or the vast majority who support having at least some restrictions on it?
Don't feed the trolls, dude. He's obviously just trying to poison debate on an honest question.
...
Remember that? He would've been a Milei of his time, but a more genteel one — a poet rather than a comedian. And then from out of nowhere — Japan, actually — came this dark horse campaigning dressed as a samurai to dash our hopes. It's like whenever we think a populace is fed up and desperate enough to install libertarians, they get cold feet and magic thinking, and instead go for a Fujimori type, albeit not usually one so flambuoyant. And then he turns out much worse than he appeared, but by the time they got rid of him, they'd gotten over the freedom fervor.
...
How many more reasons do people need to vote for Trump?
The center-right are lapping up his statements with absolutely no self-awareness, either. Case in point:
In a nutshell, and so well said. Read the whole thing.

These are the same people who think that not putting your kids through a maoist struggle session is "not wanting to learn about racism." They so readily take the left's framing at face value.
