Young people wearing 'brat' shirts | Cristina Matuozzi/Sipa USA/Newscom
(Cristina Matuozzi/Sipa USA/Newscom)

"kamala IS brat," tweeted singer Charli XCX on Sunday, following Vice President Kamala Harris' ascension to the presidential nominee slot left vacant by President Joe Biden. Despite Charli XCX's own advanced age of 31, she was speaking in slang immediately obvious to anyone under 30, especially the girls and the gays: brat is the album of the summer, with a distinctive neon green cover, full of references to Dimes Square podcaster-provocateurs, Julia Fox, party-girling hard, and—somehow, simultaneously—the lady anxiety that sets in when you're on the wrong side of your twenties and have not yet had a child.

Harris' team eagerly turned what they believed to be a pop star endorsement into a branding strategy; the X account "Kamala HQ" (1.1 million followers) adopted the distinctive color, font, and lowercase style Charli XCX's brat to craft their own banner image, reading "kamala hq." Meanwhile, the gay guys of New York City, who received the news of Biden pulling out whilst in their natural habit (Fire Island), quickly made crop tops in the exact same style of brat. A mashup cut of one of Harris' cringiest lines—some anecdote about coconut trees—was set to Charli XCX's song "Von dutch." It has received over 4 million views.

"The internet is going crazy for Harris' campaign," declares The 19th, a gender and politics website. Harris' "meme stock is bullish," adds CNN, which devoted a panel to the topic, in which a suit-wearing boomer tried, inartfully, to explain the craze to the rest. "Is Kamala Harris 'brat'?" asks The Economist, calling 2024 "America's TikTok election." "Younger celebs are aiming to help Harris by tying her to their viral and loyal social media brands," explains the Associated Press rather clinically.

"A brat should exude the je ne sais quoi of the famous-but-not-A-list women," writes Shirley Li, giving the phenomenon an overly intellectualized treatment typical of The Atlantic. "The brat is a classic feminine archetype, right up there with the jezebel, the crone, the bimbo, the career girl," writes Kat Rosenfield for The Free Press. "Brats are Cinderella's stepsisters, lacking both social graces and appropriate gratitude for the privileges they enjoy."

But what the hungry internet, full of writers looking for takes, and the Harris campaign miss is that being "brat" is not really a compliment.

"Brat" is someone who, per Charli XCX's own description, walks around with a "pack of cigs, a Bic lighter and a strappy white top with no bra." A girl "who feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things."

For the media to run with the idea that Harris has the youth vote locked down, because Charli XCX fired off a tweet (that may have been trolling) that took approximately 30 seconds to craft, betrays a certain thirst from all parties for an Obama 2.0-type campaign or for Harris to become a galvanizing Bernie Sanders-like figure. Perhaps more importantly, it contradicts the polling.

Harris is overall "doing much worse against Trump than Biden did in 2020" among youth voters, notes CNN polling analyst Harry Enten, which is backed up by Quinnipiac University polling conducted between July 19 and 21. "Moreover, young Democrats are NOT disproportionately more motivated to vote than other Democrats because of Biden's exit," notes Enten. A more recent New York Times/Siena College polling data complicates this narrative a bit, finding that "Harris fares better among young (18 to 29) and Hispanic voters than Mr. Biden did in any survey this year," which may not really be saying much. Biden performed notoriously poorly among these groups, so an improvement at the margins is good for Democrats, but possibly not a game changer. ("Conversely, [Harris] fares worse among white working-class voters and voters over 65 than Mr. Biden did in all but one prior Times/Siena poll," notes the same writeup.)

Perhaps more importantly, it's just really not the youth vote that actually matters this time around. It's nice to have, yes, but Harris needs to win Pennsylvania. Harris needs to win Arizona. Harris needs to win Michigan. Harris needs to win Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina. If she can gain traction with younger voters in those states, and/or meaningfully affect youth voter turnout, then that's helpful. Otherwise, the "Von dutch" memes don't mean squat.

"Young voters continue to feel largely negative about politics and voting, but hopefulness has increased since June," finds Change Research in a report released Wednesday that finds young people are in fact excited about Harris and more likely to turn out as a result. But still, "the top emotions associated with voting are all negative: in a select-all question, 53% chose 'anxious,' 43% 'fearful,' 38% 'overwhelmed,' and 37% 'angry.' But hopefulness has risen from 23% to 30%" following Biden's exit and Harris' entry into the race.

Kamala isn't brat. Kamala is a mediocre candidate, perceived as a kooky wine aunt who says outlandish things, capitalizing on a moment of virality amid an otherwise bleak political landscape in which young voters realize that politicians rarely deliver on their promises.

ENB should interview Kamala about her prior experience with having to screw former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown to get ahead in public office. There are all forms of sexwerk, and I think Reason owes it to their readers to explore this fascinating area of their preferred candidates’ rich history.

        Good luck with that, Democrats.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   12 months ago

Don't under-estimate the DNC-media complex. In a couple of months, they will tell us that nobody has ever been homeless or camped under a freeway in California.

  7. Idaho-Bob   12 months ago

Perhaps more importantly, it’s just really not the youth vote that actually matters this time around. It’s nice to have, yes, but Harris needs to win Pennsylvania. Harris needs to win Arizona. Harris needs to win Michigan. Harris needs to win Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina.

    2. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

I think it's just going to be too hard to fraud enough this time.

They have a few choices left:

      1. Shoot down Trump's jet and blame it on a mechanical issue despite hundreds of witnesses filming the missile or fighter attack.

      2. Use a small tactical nuke on whatever city Trump is in. Blame it on Iran or Russia.

      3. Cancel the election.

One thing that they will not do is let Trump become president again. They can't. They've done way too many illegal and unconstitutional things already.

      1. Idaho-Bob   12 months ago

One thing that they will not do is let Trump become president again. They can’t. They’ve done way too many illegal and unconstitutional things already.

Illegal and unconstitutional doesn't matter when you control the agencies. There is no accountability.

Whatever they do, they risk civil war. The next assassination attempt will be the trigger.

        1. Vernon Depner   12 months ago

It's looking more and more like they WANT a civil war. They think they'll win with their F-15s and their nukes. Our military will have to choose a side.

          1. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

The top echelons already have. Now we have to see if the rank and file choose to follow them. There's only so many furries and drag queens in the lower ranks.

            1. Vernon Depner   12 months ago

The rank and file will try to pick the winner. They won't want to be left standing when the music stops.

      2. Vernon Depner   12 months ago

No, they are not going to stop trying to kill Trump just because the first assassin missed. Too many of them will face prison, the firing squad, or at least financial ruin if there's another Trump presidency.

        1. Jefferson Paul   12 months ago

And with the Secret Service recently coming out and suggesting that Trump avoid all outdoor rallies, they will blame the next, successful, assassination attempt on Trump himself for not going along with their "safety" advice.

If he does go along with their advice, it seriously hinders his ability to win a clean election (which this won't be). So it's a win-win for the deep state.

        2. Rockstevo   12 months ago

I agree, all those Military officers that disobeyed orders and lied about what they where doing in the Middle East, all those mid-level bureaucrats that hindered policies, all those FBI / CIA etc who railroaded and coerced the brainless to create charges to hurt Trump all of these and more that then bragged about what they did know if Trump gets back in he now has ammo to remove them. If only they could have kept their mouths shut but they had to tell everyone how smart they where.

  8. Fist of Etiquette   12 months ago

Sinaloa Cartel leaders have been arrested by U.S. authorities.

The CIA ain't gonna like that!

    2. Vernon Depner   12 months ago

Law enforcement won't significantly affect them. We need some cruise missiles on their haciendas.

    3. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

From current events, seems the Sinaloa Cartel could take some migrants as hostages and Harris would set their leaders free.

If she will side with kidnappers that use their victims as human shield, why not with the cartel?

      1. damikesc   12 months ago

I so loved seeing that MN channel claiming that the GOP was making up Kamala's support of the bail fund. Even after they specifically asked about that a few years ago.

Given their hatred for it, I guess we're not suffering natural gaslighting.

I think Harris can pickup the youth that Biden lost due to his stance on Israel. However, she may lose the Jewish vote which Biden was trying to balance.

She seems to be for the ICC going after Israel. What happens if they go after Biden for supplying weapons for those transgressions.
What's interesting is the omitting that the ICC is charging Hamas leaders too.

      1. Jefferson Paul   12 months ago

What happens if they go after Biden for supplying weapons for those transgressions.

Then you'll hear all the Dems talk about how they support the USSC decision upholding immunity to Presidents for official acts. And they've always been at war with Eastasia, er, supported immunity for Presidents.

The reason the Democrats never wanted Kamala in the first place is because they know they don't have anything to run. That's WHY they're embracing all this pop culture schlock. Pick ANY issue - social, economic, foreign, domestic - and what's her campaign's platform on it? Other than the overall generic Democrat sentiment?

The media is pretending otherwise, but this is still the same old desperation campaign they were running with Tapioca Joe. "Young people should like her because we say so." And "she's not Trump."

That's all they're running on. While simultaneously ignoring/downplaying/criticizing anyone who points out that the Democrat bloc REALLY wants the opportunity to vote for an alternative, instead of having Kammy shoved on them against their will.

    1. Ska   12 months ago

      How is Trump different?

Trump's platform is: I hate Democrats and many Republicans

      Harris: I also hate Republicans.

      1. AT   12 months ago

I agree. In fact, one thing I've been telling the MAGA/Trump crowd is if they're going to earn my vote, they need to start articulating their plans.

Specifically for the border. Trump's planning on sealing it and deporting all the illegals? Great, I'm 100% for that. Now tell me HOW he's going to accomplish that so I can decide if that's a reasonable approach or if he's just blowing smoke.

He's punting on abortion and LGBT pedo? OK, not a fan - but at least tell me how you're going to defend the States that have decided they're not OK with that garbage, against the attacks of the blue states that want to undermine them.

Hamas, and by extension Iran - what's the plan? I'm OK with military action, but I want to know there's an actual plan in place.

I'm not going to vote for platitudes and bromides. I won't do it for Trump, and I certainly won't do it for Kamala.

Not just me. ALL his voters. All the people whose vote he wants to court.

You strike me as kind of a low-fo follow-the-crowd type, Sev. Like some sort of Pavlovian dog that just knows when to bark based on having been conditioned to certain triggers. That is to say, not much of a real thinker.

Like, for example, "Build the wall." I'll bet you ate that up and asked for seconds and thirds, right? But then, what did you get out of it? Half a wall with a friggin' door that the Democrats could - and did - swing wide open any time they want. But hey, it looked and sounded good - so you didn't give it any real thought and declared the border problem solved.

And even if you were disappointed by that by 2020, you know it ahead of time going into 2024. You KNOW he didn't have a plan. You KNOW he didn't have a meaningful roadmap to achieving the promises he was making.

Well, now it IS 2024 - and, fool me once. So, yea, it's really NOT all that much to ask that the candidate you want me to vote for explain his specific plans that should earn him our vote.

That you don't even want it just makes you a cult zealot. Like I said - orange kool aid.

Were you born yesterday? Candidates for President don't give specifics, ever, and if they do they don't win the Presidency.

Trump has already been President, so you more or less know what you're getting there. Like it or hate it, I don't think anyone is really 'mystified' by what he offers. If you are mystified, that's on you for not paying attention to politics since at least 2016.

Kamala is a sex worker, and you more or less know what you're getting there too. You get the Democrat platform, good and hard. If you like the Democrats platform, vote for her, because there is no noticeable difference between her and the party leadership.

                    4. Jefferson Paul   12 months ago

AT, I don't understand your position. I get that you would like Trump to come out and give specifics to how he plans to accomplish border security. But if he doesn't, you don't know that you can vote for him? If border security is an important issue for you, and it justifiably is for the country, how can you consider voting for a different candidate? Kamala will be at least as bad on the border as Joe was, Chase Oliver would probably be even worse than that.

Are you saying the alternative to voting for Trump is not voting? Sure, I've had that thought in past elections myself. But if you believe the border situation is of extreme importance, I don't see how the choice isn't easy for you. The CHANCE that it could improve (with a 2nd Trump term), or the certainty it will not and will likely get worse, perhaps much worse.

                    5. AT   12 months ago

I want to know that he's serious about the issue.

He didn't have a problem with this in 2016. He told us his plan flat out, "We're going to build a wall, we're going to keep them from entering the country. And we're going to make Mexico pay for it." Wasn't a great plan - arguably, it was a downright stupid one - but at least it was an articulated plan. He did the same thing with China. "We're going to tariff them until they start dealing fairly." Again, like it or dislike it, it was a plan. He did the same thing with NATO. "You're going to pay your fair share, or we're not going to help you anymore." Plan. The Iranian terrorist state. "We're going to dump the JCPOA." Plan.

What's the plan now? For ANY of it?

I don’t think anyone is really ‘mystified’ by what he offers.

I'm not mystified about it. I get the policy directions he wants to go. But dropping chum partisan buzzwords that I like to hear aren't plans. They're not even goals. It's just pandering. It's like he's trading exclusively off nostalgia (albeit a relatively recent one). His whole campaign seems to be summed up as a general, "Miss me yet?"

Well, sure, I'm pretty darned unhappy over Tapioca Joe - but that's not a check mark in Trump's column, as if that's earned him some kind of credit. "I'm not the other guy," implies plenty about the other guy - who I am also not mystified about - but nothing specific about Trump and his plans should he be awarded the White House in 2024.

I want to know the plans. And I don't see why it's so unreasonable to ask them before blindly handing over a vote. Otherwise your whole argument is just a roundabout way of the same old lesser-of-two-evils, "Who cares, just so long as he's not the other guy."

I get that you would like Trump to come out and give specifics to how he plans to accomplish border security. But if he doesn’t, you don’t know that you can vote for him? If border security is an important issue for you, and it justifiably is for the country, how can you consider voting for a different candidate?

Well, let's put it this way.

Suppose Trump were to say, "I want border security. We're going to round up the illegals and make sure they never come back." Well, OK, those things all appeal to me - but what does that mean, and how will he make good on it?

Now imagine someone like Randall Terry were to say - for the record he has NOT said anything like this, but for sake of argument here: "I also want border security. To that end, I'm going to veto any legislation from Congress until I see a bill on my desk that curbs any American taxpayer dollars contributing to the social welfare of illegal aliens. In a similar fashion, I am going to direct my Dept. of Education to remove any illegal alien children from public school classrooms, and direct their student records to the attention of ICE. The same will go for anyone who presents for medical treatment under EMTALA who cannot ultimately provide proof of citizenship. In addition, I will utilize my powers as Commander in Chief to send armed forces to shore up the efforts of Border Patrol and similar State-led efforts."

Maybe that's overly specific, and maybe he can't even deliver on the promise - but at least it's a clear plan with clear goals and the means by which he aims to achieve them. I mean, if your single issue is border control - mine's not, by the way, but it's easily the biggest issue - then hasn't (AT-imagined) Terry made a better case for his election than Trump?

But, of course, the counterargument is: "Who the hell is Randall Terry?!" And I get that argument - but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking that if one candidate makes a better case for his policy than another, then why wouldn't he get your vote?

Because has no chance of winning? So what? Are you voting for what you want; or voting for platitudes and, ultimately, "whatever who cares, just not the other guy."

                2. sarcasmic   12 months ago

Trump has said that police need more power and complete immunity to round up illegals. Not sure how he could accomplish that though.

                  1. AT   12 months ago

Yea, but that's not an outline, let alone a plan.

I can tell you right here, right now, where to find a half-dozen illegals in my city. (And no, not the obvious ones hanging out curbside at Home Depot or U-Haul.) I know where they are. I could tell him where they are. What's Trump going to do to round them up and kick them out?

                    1. sarcasmic   12 months ago

Right now he can't do much because local police aren't empowered to enforce federal law. He'd have to deputize all cops as federal law enforcement officers. Federal officials also enjoy absolute immunity, so I imagine local cops would get that too. If you think police abuse their power knowing they have qualified immunity, imagine how much more corrupt they will be with absolute immunity.

Personally I don't think the trade off is worth it. But I also don't have a boner for rounding up people for the crime of not having papers.

                    3. sarcasmic   12 months ago

He has said that police need immunity from criminal prosecution, which I suppose is true since it would be illegal for local cops to round up immigrants. Hasn't specified how. I was just giving my best guess. As far as a citation goes, just google it and choose your favorite source.

Question for you AT. Have you listened to or read many of the long form interviews from those closest to him like Vivek? Have you gone to their campaign sites?

The problem is your want details largely dependent on Congress. For immigration he is going to implement similar policies as before with the added deportation proceedings when illegals get arrested foe other crimes. Empower judges for quick asylum decisions.

For reduction of the deep state he has said he was going to use Vivek's plans. He had already implemented a rule the first term to make them easier to fire, undone by Joe.

For energy he is going to sign a shit ton of permits under his power.

Not sure which details you think are missing.

The problem is your want details largely dependent on Congress.

Indeed they are. So, assuming he has even a slightly hostile/resistant Congress, what's this alleged Statesman's plan for convincing them to his side? What plan does he hope to sell them, and what are its merits that said Congressmen can take back to their constituents to explain why they should/will support Trump in it?

For reduction of the deep state he has said he was going to use Vivek’s plans. He had already implemented a rule the first term to make them easier to fire, undone by Joe.

For energy he is going to sign a shit ton of permits under his power.

                    So, pen and phone then?

Like, y'know, the utter failure of his first term all of which was easily undone within 90 days of his ouster?

Let's repeat the same actions and hope for different results?

                    1. JesseAz (5-30 Banana Republic Day)   12 months ago

This is a very weird comment from you.

First you say he may have a hostile congress, so won’t get stuff done. Then complain he will do what he actually has power to do.

                      Which is it?

Some of his actions, like the rules regarding firing, can be implemented day one so he has time to execute. Vivek has a grand plan for firings based on reductions, not cause. Trump has said he is open to that. Trump also agreed woth Vivek ok changing appropriation bill language to allow spending reductions, from shall to may so he isny forced by Impoundment Act to spend every dollar congress allocates.

You can’t complain about him using the powers he has and then also complain he is going to use the powers he has without congress.

He isn’t a king. He doesn’t control congress. But youre damning him with any action taken.

                    2. AT   12 months ago

No, think of it this way:

His first course of action should be to appeal to Congress. State of the Union - this is where we are, this is where I'd like us to be, this is what I'm seeking Legislative assistance with to get us there. Please help me, guys. (Someone might have to teach him the word "please.")

His second course of action should be to continue to appeal to Congress. Guys, here's what I want and here's what I'll concede on to get it. (Someone might have to teach him the word "concession.")

His third course of action should be to appeal to the constituents of hostile Congressmen - especially to the sleeping Reds in Blue States, but to the Blues as well to whatever degree he might reach any of them. Take his case to the People, and ask their help in demanding that their Congressman reflect their will. Make the case. Sell the people on it. Get them to exert their pressure on Congress. (Someone might have to remind him that the President represents ALL Americans, not just the ones who voted for him. And if he scoffs, equate him with Barack.)

In the meantime, if the wounds are still hemorrhaging, utilize limited agency power to triage them. But don't think of it as a solution - which is precisely what he did, do not even attempt to deny that - think of it as a temporary fix that still needs to be ultimately dealt with. And, play to his strength - utilize social media to illustrate the Will of the People. Regularly meet with average Americans in televised events. Be willing to engage them like Vivek does.

I don't want a king. But it sounds like most Americans do. Or, at least, a benevolent dictator. Depending on their definition of "benevolent."

Or, much more likely, Biden Guy is one of SPB2’s socks.

Here's the thing - the childless cat ladies never come out of their own hyper-feminist bubble, at least not before their mid-30s.

Then they hit the wall. And it is not a pretty sight.

And then that looming vision of how utterly miserable and lonely they are - loneliness that their "furbabies" can't possibly make up for - hits them like a brick to the face. Yea, the particularly affluent (like Taylor) might avoid its reality with an endless parade of money and casual sex, but the former can only buy so much, and the latter is only as available as their dwindling sex appeal. (And let's not kid ourselves, even the Swifties, enamored with the Travis/Taylor drama, are hoping that Kelce makes an honest woman out of her at some point.)

But, to be sure, the childless cat ladies are almost exclusive a blue bastion thing in the first place. Which Trump/Vance has little likelihood of winning over in the first place.

    The Age of Liberal Groupthink:

    https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/07/american-life-under-liberal-conformism/

"Liberal groupthink is the most important factor in the general-opinion environment and has been for all my life. But now, because liberal groupthink is subject to sudden eruptive enthusiasms and insanity-inducing reversals, American life proceeds with a sense that the laws of physics don’t really apply. There’s a creepy unsettledness to life in America. And it’s because journalists are lobotomizing themselves in the name of their favorite cause, the Democratic Party."

"I’ve watched liberals converge on the opinion that anti-Chinese racism was more dangerous than the coronavirus and that the vaguely libertarian Silicon Valley people who were concerned about it were kind of racist. Then, almost overnight, they converged on the opposite opinion, that the coronavirus was a threat that justified the suspension of normal life indefinitely. Also, they improbably converged on the theory that it was racist to believe that the virus had emerged from a lab in Wuhan that was experimenting with coronaviruses. Somehow, because progressives believed it, it was less racist to believe that it emerged from the folklore-driven superstition and disgusting hygiene practices around Chinese wet markets.

And then, even as religious minorities were being demonized as antisocial sociopaths and killers for gathering — outside, no less — for funerals, liberal opinion instantly switched to the idea that social distancing was no longer mandatory, enormous public demonstrations (and riots) were now mandatory, and so was defunding the police."

"It’s clear that liberal opinion conformity is driven by something more than the pressures of social media and the way they hypercharge opinion-sharing and make it obvious where the wind is blowing. It is driven by the unprecedented levels of cynicism, cowardice, and insecurity of the liberal opinion-forming class itself. This is a generation of people who have had the least amount of moral formation in our history. With them incumbent, we no longer have sense-making institutions; we have a nonsense-infected mob that destroys the reputations of all the institutions in which its members are nominally stationed.

Intentional or not, the progressive push for a culture and ethos of weak victimhood, borderline psychosis, and catastrophism has created a huge population of people with severe emotional dependencies. The Democrat-establishment-media industrial complex clearly takes advantage of this, inventing crises and then promising salvation. Add to that a common human need for a Dear Leader, and I am not surprised at how eagerly the faithful have embrace Kamalama as their next lord and savior.

Absent of finding something close to Trump that was shatter, then the FBI would be making it up. There would be no basis for the FBI claim.

There is no doubt that a bullet grazed his ear. I actually know why it matters, but I want everyone making this assertion to say, but they won’t. But in the rational human world, it doesn’t matter. His injury is minor– no one is denying that. It’s not like he’s going to come out on stage with a neck brace or limping on a cane. There was an assassination attempt on his life, so in my mind, the only question left is what did Hillary Clinton know and when did she know it?

      FBI followed later with

“What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject’s rifle,” the agency said in a statement.

The one-sentence statement from the FBI marked the most definitive law enforcement account of Trump’s injuries and followed ambiguous comments earlier in the week from Director Christopher Wray that appeared to cast doubt on whether Trump had actually been hit by a bullet.

Everything she got she was given by men.

Hillary would have no political career at all if it wasn't for Bill, much less the 2016 nom.

        1. Mike Parsons   12 months ago

Ya, I had this conversation with quite a few braindead "it was her turn!!!" dems back then. The constant refrain and branding was "most qualified to be president in the history of candidates"

All of those qualifications basically being handed to her, a product of her marriage to Bill, or the DNC anointing her.

Gov wife, first lady, and cred to run for NY senator, all name recognition for being the wife of a popular D president. Would be like Michelle running in Illinois, an easy lay up.

Secy of State was a gift for eventually bowing out against Obama, realizing he had won the war, and that it would tee her up for "her turn"

Prez nomination was a coronation/anointment, the DNC handed her the nomination on a platter.

The lady would have been next to a no one had she not been Bill's wife, and the dems hate admitting that fact because it ruins their girl boss fantasy. They also know its true about Kamala and why they are having a spasm about her being called Madam Hawk Tuah

Trudeau’s lack of proper forest management burns a goodly part of Jasper to the ground. An utter shame as the town and area is beautiful.

    https://x.com/martyupnorth_2/status/1816313491420242120?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA

Jasper National Park has been my backyard and my playground for 35 years. There isn't a trail in the park that I haven't hiked.

During those 35 years I've seen a lot of mismanagement, but nothing like I've witnessed during the last decade. I've ranted about it it all my videos, talked about it online, discussed it with other users and even written to the staff.

The devastation that's happening right before our eyes was totally predictable. We all saw the hillsides covered in dead, beetle infested pines. Forest are living eco-systems that go through life and death cycles. The fires are natural, but didn't have to be this dramatic. Park managers should have conducted some controlled burns and cleared dead forests.

As usual, everyone is full of prayers. That's not what we need. We need to abandon this woke ideology that has infiltrated all our institutions.

We need heads to roll after this one.

Don't praise the fire chief for his efforts. His primary job is to prevent forest fires, not put them out.

Don't celebrate the the park's superintendent who wanted to rename mountains instead of maintaining a healthy eco system.

Blame the bureaucrates who worried about wheelchair accessible trails instead of fire access roads.

Criticize the politicians who sent billions to the Ukraine meat grinder instead of buying water bombers.

I'm beginning to think this really is by design. Ottawa doesn't want Alberta to have anything nice.

    1. Ron   12 months ago

In California the trees are dying from tree beetles because there are to many trees since they curtailed logging, not because of global warming. i know it sounds odd but anytime you let something grow to the extend we have pest or other tree blight will kick in. we have seen it before with chestnut trees, pear trees and now it may happen with banana trees. blame the greenies for all of it

      1. Sevo, 5-30-24, embarrassment   12 months ago

Same cause for the increased forest fires. The logging companies managed the forests, keeping the undergrowth ("kindling") in check. Neither the state nor the federal governments do.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   12 months ago

The other big factor is a century of putting out all fires, natural and man-caused. Unless most western forests burn every decade or two (and usually lightly) then the undergrowth and debris build up, and the next fire is catastrophic.

      2. Red Rocks White Privilege   12 months ago

Yeah, it's funny how nature has a way of balancing things out on its own irrespective of whatever man might do. Let forests grow out of control? Well, now the beetles have a buffet to gorge on and forest fires will clear them out!

    2. Mother's Lament   12 months ago

All the Liberals on X are furiously typing away and trying to blame this of Alberta's conservative Premier Danielle Smith instead of Justin, but Jasper is a national park and its firefighting is managed by the federal government rather than the province.

"The reason all the deaths are down is because you are in stuck in your house."

"Actually the executive order allows an easier path to US citizenship therefore no longer making them illegals and allowing children to join their already legalized immigrant parents in the US."

"first of all Biden executive orders don't incentivize human trafficking as human traffickers aren't interested in citizenships, likewise the majority of illegal immigrants are not criminals and in fact some studies(such as the one linked below) show lower rates of crime committed by these individuals, it is also unclear if the extensive path to citizenship is in fact effective at routing out potential bad actors hence why there is a review of that system."

"Thats funny because the first order mandates a reuniting of any families separated at the border, the 2nd and 3rd orders a review of trumps immigration policies and other previous policies. However his order doesn't actually open borders or reduce the authority of border patrol, or anything that would substantially reduce BP effectiveness."

"California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order Thursday to direct state agencies on how to remove homeless encampments, a month after a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside in public spaces," reports the Associated Press.

Something's going on here in mainstream Democratic politics-- at the local level. It's like someone sent out a memo and said, "Take away any ammunition that can be used against us in November".

I noted yesterday in a thread that a sitting Seattle City Council member, speaking into a microphone, to the public, with cameras on boldly claimed that "Defund the police is dead" and that it was a failed policy and failed ideology. For Seattle local politics, the impact of that statement can't be understated. That would be like the national Democratic party saying, "We're no longer pro-choice". That's how yuge that is. Someone somewhere is starting to read the room.

If she can gain traction with younger voters in those states, and/or meaningfully affect youth voter turnout, then that's helpful.

Does anyone actually care about 'the youth vote'? I mean, unless something has really changed in the United States 'the youth' simply...don't vote at all. So even if 100% of 'the youth' 'support' Kamala, that probably equates to very few actual votes.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that's been a trend since before I was alive and will probably continue long after I'm gone.

    1. CE   12 months ago

As Libertarians learned long ago, young people don't vote.
      Old people vote.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   12 months ago

The youth vote isn’t really good for anything other than providing the appearance of popular consensus for the marxists in the mass media to trumpet. As you said, they’ve never turned out in large enough numbers to really matter at the actual ballot box. If anything, their generations-long lack of participation is a great argument to repeal the 26th Amendment and go back to treating 21 as the age of majority. That Amendment was only passed as a sop to the liberal Boomers and has no substantive reason for its existence.

      1. BYODB   12 months ago

Making it all the more curious why a campaign would focus on that demographic when it objectively hurts them with the rest of their demographics.

It's just a weird choice to run with this, although I'm tempted to suspect it's because they have no idea how to market cackles to any normies who might actually vote. This basically fell in their lap, so they were like 'sure, this will make good enough filler until we have a clue what to do'.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   12 months ago

Making it all the more curious why a campaign would focus on that demographic when it objectively hurts them with the rest of their demographics.

A very long history of youth worship going back to the 50s. Older people love the idea that they're considered "hip" by teenagers, because they believe it makes them more credible with the culture at large. Even if "Rock the Vote" was a completely waste of effort by MTV, it scared Kemp Republicans enough after Clinton was elected to focus mostly on fiscal and administrative conservative issues and push social conservativism to the side, since they assumed the latter would continue supporting them regardless. And until Trump came along, that was the case.

      2. Vernon Depner   12 months ago

go back to treating 21 as the age of majority

        I would make it 25.

a sop to the liberal Boomers

It was introduced as a way to pacify anti-draft protesters.

    3. TrickyVic (old school)   12 months ago

The youth vote helped Clinton and Obama. But more so Obama.

If the youth didn't vote, the dems wouldn't want to lower the voting age.

      1. BYODB   12 months ago

My recollection is that they might have 'helped' by a few percentage points out of the total, which ultimately didn't matter one way or the other. They could have stayed home and the result would have likely been the same.

The majority of them simply don't vote. Advertising wisdom targets that demo because they spend money and is a good value for the buck you spend on it. In politics, not so much.

Trump’s best strategy to win might just be to go camp in his basement and release a short, pre-recorded video now and then. (This is the Biden strategy that produced a record 81 million votes.)

I just stumbled upon this X post by Joseph Mallozzi, the writer/producer for some of my favorite sci-fi series (Stargate, Dark Matter, etc.). He satirizes the assassination attempt as a Hollywood movie plot submitted to him, but points out how poorly written it is with so many unbelievable plot points. IMO, it's worth a read:
