Maybe New Yorkers Don't Want Bowman Progressivism

Plus: Inside the failed takeover of the L.P., suspicious stats spread by the surgeon general, and more...

Bowman and Sanders | Lev Radin/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Lev Radin/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Loss for progressive Democrats: Last night, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a far-left Democrat who represents the outskirts of New York City (Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and parts of the Bronx), lost his seat in Congress to George Latimer, the Westchester County executive.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) showed up and rallied for Bowman, and Ocasio-Cortez even helped him with door-knocking in Mount Vernon over the weekend.

Israel was front and center in this election.

While Bowman was accusing Israel of genocide, Latimer was positioning himself as an ardent supporter of Israel and (rightly) calling Hamas a terrorist group.

Bowman's beliefs were seemingly informed by a trip to Israel in 2021, where he observed that "there was no political will at the top of the Israeli government to pursue a two-state solution or engage in any sort of sustainable peace process—and that America's willingness to send significant aid to Israel without any conditions attached was therefore unwise," reports Politico. "After the trip, Bowman changed from a relatively mainstream Democrat on Israel into one of the country's chief antagonists in Congress." And being an Israel-antagonist didn't play well with voters in his heavily Jewish district.

"Left-leaning groups like Justice Democrats, who once played the role of conquering insurgents, found themselves running a desperate rescue operation in an overwhelmingly Democratic district. They depleted bank accounts and redirected staff to the race full-time," reports The New York Times in a postmortem that claims Justice Democrats' favored candidates "could not compete with the other side's vast resources" (seemingly meaning the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other parts of the pro-Israel lobby).

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent at least $14.5 million on anti-Bowman ads. "The number is gross…I don't like it," one House Democrat told Axios. Other Democratic lawmakers raised concerns that AIPAC's aggressive intervention here might make elected representatives think twice before criticizing Israel.

But framing his loss mostly as a function of the funding competition misses the possibility that voters simply don't want what Bowman is offering. It might be that far-left progressivism is unpopular following a spike in felony assaults and subway-system crimes in New York City (and broad concern about public disorder that are somewhat detached from the statistics), and that New York's voters are not persuaded that Bowman's course of action on Israel is the right one.

Still, the "AIPAC did it" argument is what Bowman has gone with, too. "We should be outraged when a Super PAC of dark money can spend $20 million to brainwash people into believing something that isn't true," he said in his concession speech.

Get ready for these tensions on the left—on Israel, on progressive approaches to crime, on progressives' prescriptions for the economy—to reach a boiling point in more of this year's elections; for AIPAC to be blamed on electoral outcomes; and possibly, for a broader discourse about PAC and super PAC influence in politics.

Other outcomes: In Colorado, Beetlejuice appreciator (and current representative) Lauren Boebert (R) won reelection after having switched districts, despite a crowded primary; Utah's Republican primary saw Gov. Spencer Cox stay in power, fending off a challenger from his right. Utah saw some other wins for moderate Republicans, too, who successfully thwarted Trump-backed candidates' plans to take over.

This might be the worst primary night for Trump-endorsed GOP candidates all year. Burns loses narrowly in SC, Dave Williams getting crushed in CO05 - all before UTSen comes in, and polls had showed Trump-backed Trent Staggs down big.

Scenes from New York: Churches in New York are seriously out here going hard for Pride Month, but it's not always clear what the, uh, theological basis for such slogans is or what exactly they mean. "Jesus was the queerest of us all" feels like hollow activist language that will become dated in a few years, not something actually worth mulling.

QUICK HITS

  • Have you ever found yourself scratching your head and wondering what happened to the Libertarian Party? Who these Mises Caucus guys are and what do they want? Whether their "takeover" two years ago was successful? Look no further. I wrote a feature on what went wrong within the L.P. (and a lot of the Mises Caucus folks are super mad at me as a result).
  • A thread about how China's tech scene has changed over the last decade. ("What does the internet look like without the web?")
  • "The day after Emmanuel Macron stunned France by calling a snap election, an uncomfortable truth emerged at an emergency meeting of top government press officials: they had to manage a deeply unpopular president in what had effectively become a referendum on his leadership," reports Bloomberg.
  • "An EU country in fully good standing around the world, on the basis of ethnicity, denies a significant portion of its longstanding residents the right to vote," writes Tyler Cowen about Estonia.
  • Does the surgeon general actually mean to say that "17 percent [of adults] have witnessed someone being shot" and that this is nationally representative? This just does not strike me as anywhere close to true.

My Surgeon General's Advisory on Firearm Violence outlines the devastating impact of firearm violence on Americans. Firearm violence is pervasive: a staggering 54% of adults report they or their families have experienced a firearm-related incident. https://t.co/bNS7xD9Bhp pic.twitter.com/MWfp65SoSK

The US government will literally say anything about gun crime, even pretend that it's a disease, to avoid speak the simple truth about who perpetrates most of it and why.

1 in 5 has a family death due to guns? Seems unlikely, unless we're counting things like "Grandpa Joe died in Vietnam, got shot by the Cong" or "My second cousin once removed on my mom's side committed suicide."

There's about 85M families in the US, meaning some 16M have a gunshot death? When only ~45k people die from gunshots annually.

Their are entire swaths of every major city where those numbers are staggeringly high. Most of us will never visit those places, so the "epidemic of gun violence" is like extrapolating COVID nursing home deaths across the entire population.

One family member has to defend themselves and yes an entire family of three generations spanning some 40 plus people will know about it and this does not include friends of family that hear about it, this is just one families experience. so yes lots of people know people who have had an encounter with guns but it is a meaningless number.

Fake news! There is no such thing as "far-left". Since the official state media (guided by their inner party committees) sets the standards and language, we know that "progressive" is the desired norm. And we know that anyone in opposition to the current 5 year plan is "right" (and anyone who publicly criticizes the plan is "far-right").

Obvious hypocritical cope aside (money and mega PACs donating to Biden, Hillary and massively outspending everyone there seems to be totes cool) I do love that they are throwing the masks in the garbage related to ever *actually* caring about hate/bigotry when it comes to an out group rather than one of their protected classes.

      for example something like:
"when a Super PAC of dark money can spend $20 million to brainwash people into believing something"

If Nick Fuentes says it, this is Nazi far right hate speech trotting out tropes that Jews are pulling the puppet strings and have used their dark jewery to hypnotize the populace. But when a (notably: higher tier victim status) democrat says it...

      1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

Then explain why the heat wave hit the NE this week if it wasn't the Jews and their weather machine? They pulled out all the stops to keep people from standing in long lines in the heat to vote for Bowman, right out of their MAGA white nationalist playbook.

      2. diver64   1 year ago

That lesbian space witch storyline could have been interesting if it wasn’t so obvious what the lesbian in charge was trying to do with it. Her immediate “as a queer woman” lead in to the excuse let everyone know what was going on. Disney has not learned it’s lesson. People will watch a female lead like Wonder Women if the storyline is there and carries it along. Who doesn’t think the original Wonder Woman was a fantastic move as it roughly followed her origin and made sense? People don’t like getting beat over the head with nonsense woke crap especially fanboys that know the comic storylines and will accept something if it follows the cannon but immediately throw the flag when it doesn’t

Moments after receiving a standing ovation for his speech in Calgary, Canada, Tommy Robinson was arrested by eight undercover and uniformed police.

A Liberal Party minister's deputy ordered the arrest on unspecified "immigration violations", which is the first time the Trudeau government has worried about that since they took office. They opened borders and released all the violent offenders from jails. But a "right-wing" activist? That's different.

And for comparison, this would be like the Secretary of State's deputy ordering the San Antonio PD to arrest him. Crazy and possibly illegal.

The Boebert election was weird. I didn’t pay much attention once she carpetbagged to avoid losing in her old district. But Ken Buck resigned early specifically to force a special election to fill the seat until Jan. Boebert didn’t compete in that because she would have had to resign her seat if she won the special election in the new seat. Greg Lopez was chosen by the R’s to compete in that special election and also won it yesterday. But apparently he chose to not compete in the primary for the full House term. Which left any R’s who really preferred Lopez with no ability to vote for Lopez or his preferred candidate in the primary.

What’s funny – when you drill down the votes – the county that elected Boebert is Douglas County. Not the rural areas of CO, not the northern Front Range areas (the ag uni and meat packing urban areas). Douglas County – the high income exurb that has now elected an asshole who has no ability or interest in delivering anything for that county. Good for them. Hope they at least enjoy the circus.

Two illegal aliens accused of murdering 12-year old after 2-hours of sexually assaulting her under a bridge had been caught a few months ago and released by ICE.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Martinez was detained by border patrol agents in El Paso on March 14 and released the same day. Similarly, Pena was apprehended and released on May 28.

Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26, one of the suspects behind the murder, appeared in court Monday at Harris County Criminal Court, where it was revealed that he was wearing the ankle monitor at the time he allegedly murdered Nungaray.

The ankle bracelet was provided to him when he was arrested by Border Patrol agents after entering the country illegally and being released from custody, with ICE telling Fox News in a statement Friday that he "illegally entered the U.S. without inspection, parole or admission by a U.S. immigration officer on an unknown date and at an unknown location."

Martinez-Rangel and Peña on June 16 allegedly lured Jocelyn under a bridge, where they stripped her naked to the waist and assaulted her for two hours, disturbing court documents allege.

Little Jocelyn Nungaray fought back against her attackers after she was lured under a Houston bridge and assaulted for two hours — leaving scratch and bite marks on one of the illegal migrants who is accused of killing her, prosecutors revealed Tuesday.

Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, 21, still had the marks Jocelyn left on him when he was arrested, Assistant District Attorney Megan Long said in a Harris County court.

    https://apnews.com/article/girl-murder-houston-undocumented-venezuelans-bond-22153232c69dbdb0ee62a5ffb19035e0#

HOUSTON (AP) — A second Venezuelan man living in the U.S. illegally and accused of killing a 12-year-old Houston girl was ordered on Tuesday to be held on a $10 million bond.

Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, 22, is one of two men charged with capital murder in Jocelyn Nungaray’s death. The other is Franklin Jose Peña Ramos, 26.

State District Judge Josh Hill set the bond during a court hearing in which prosecutors said authorities found evidence on Martinez-Rangel’s cellphone that they allege showed he was trying to leave the country after police were looking for him following Jocelyn’s death.

During a court hearing Monday, Hill also ordered that Peña be held on a $10 million bond.

Nungaray’s body was found June 17 in a shallow creek after police said she sneaked out of her nearby home the night before. She was strangled to death, according to the medical examiner. Prosecutors allege the men took off her pants, tied her up and killed her before throwing her body in the bayou.

She had disappeared during a walk to a convenience store, police said.

The two men are Venezuelan nationals who entered the United States illegally in March, according to a statement Friday from the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Both were arrested by U.S. Border Patrol and later released with orders to appear in court at a later date.

Both Peña and Martinez-Rangel are now under immigration holds by federal authorities, meaning they would remain in custody even if they could post bond.

Remember Those Gay Activists Accused of Abusing Their Adopted Kids?

To recap, William Dale Zulock and Zachary Jacoby Zulock, frequent faces at the Atlanta Pride Parade, are accused of forming a child-prostitution ring in the Atlanta suburbs. The couple was arrested overnight on July 27, 2022, allegedly in the midst of amassing pedophile members, whom they met off of the gay hook-up app Grindr and to whom they would pimp out their elementary-aged children.

Among the slew of child sex crimes they're facing, the Zulocks are charged with producing and distributing "homemade" child pornography with the two boys they had adopted locally through a Christian special-needs adoption agency, All God's Children, Inc. The now-defunct business prioritized placing children who have "waited the longest" for a family. In 2018, the same-sex newlyweds apparently passed the "faster than expected" adoption process "with flying colors," despite the fact that one of the adoptive fathers was previously accused of raping a young boy in another child rape case from years ago.

Per the probable cause affidavit, William and Zachary confessed to anally penetrating both boys, forcing the two children to perform oral sex, and doing the same to them. The men acknowledged that the boys would cry out that it hurt when they were being abused, but they'd walk them through "how to handle the pain."

The older child, who sustained physical injuries from being brutally raped, told police that Zachary, the cameraman, would be in bed recording when William was abusing him. "I'm going to f**k my son tonight," Zachary allegedly bragged to potential clients, instructing them to "Stand by." He'd send unsolicited messages describing "what he would do to his son," the Walton County Sheriff's Office says.

Authorities were ultimately tipped off by a Snapchat video Zachary allegedly filmed at home in one of the bathrooms. The pornographic clip depicted "an adult male penis was repeatedly being put in the mouth of a prepubescent male." A ball gag, a blindfold, and bindings were visible in the video, says the search warrant executed on the Zulock house, the so-called "Gayest Place in Town," according to a welcome mat that adorned the front entryway. Jurassic Park footy pajamas found in the child's bedroom and a DVR set taken from the in-home "theater room" were on the laundry list of items seized and stored away as evidence.

"Our business is our business. What happens in our home, stays in our home," the men allegedly told the boys. The children said that they were threatened each time they left the house and directed not to tell anyone about the sexual abuse or "there would be consequences."

A formidable four terabytes of data, which investigators are continuing to comb through, was extracted from the 16 security cameras stationed all over the house in every single room. The cameras were recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week, capturing everything, including the sexual assaults. "They are all on video filmed throughout multiple rooms in the house," the prosecution says.

Newsom is entirely too stupid to understand that his governorship of CA is well considered by most of the US and seen as the disaster it is:

“Newsom attacks ‘delusional California bashers’ in unorthodox speech”
    […]
“Gov. Gavin Newsom took on “delusional California bashers” and lauded the state’s economic prowess and inclusive values in an unorthodox State of the State speech that he shared in a video Tuesday on social media.
Repeating familiar tropes of past political speeches, Newsom cast the state as a force of light against dark conservative forces. He boasted about California’s work to protect civil rights and attacked Republicans in other states for “telling a woman she’s not in charge of her own body.”
“Our values and our way of life are the antidote to the poisonous populism of the right, and to the fear and anxiety that so many people are feeling today,” Newsom said. “People across the globe, they look to California and see what’s possible, and how we can live together and advance together and prosper together across every conceivable and imaginable difference.”…”

      Swimming is racist?

Am I supposed to get that because the swim team is almost 100% white, that racism somehow is in play? Are there rules that keep black people off the team, ’cause I thought: “swim faster than anyone else and you’re on the team.”

Can I take a snapshot of NBA team and say “They just hate us (white people?” I wouldn’t because I assume the NBA team wants the best players they can get.

      1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

You'll hear the woke complain and complain about the NFL discriminating against black people because there aren't that many black head coaches. That's due to racism. But the disproportionately small number of white players is just because NFL teams want to win and draft the best players available (this part is true). Somehow they can't apply that reasoning to the representation of the races of head coaches in the NFL.

But framing his loss mostly as a function of the funding competition misses the possibility that voters simply don’t want what Bowman is offering.

I tend to agree that Bowman lost because redistricting (completed just a few months ago) significantly changed the demographics of his district. I’m sure that change was a Dem establishment move to pressure the left-wing/squad types while keeping the district firmly D – and Bowman didn’t seem to get that message.

BUT – the AIPAC critter purchase is a big issue that shouldn’t be ignored. Of course it will be ignored here at Reason and by most of the commentariat here because corruption by monied interests is kind of the purpose of the strain of political ideology here. It’s the only end-point of a notion that representation is best decided as some market transaction.

We’ve spent 100+ years reducing the power of the individual voter in favor of increasing the power of ‘influencers’ and intermediaries. From increasing the size of districts where pollsters/consultants (and thus donors) determine how the connections with voters will happen. To the deceitful futility of pretending that it’s all ok if the right kind of bureaucrats (campaign finance, redistricting, etc) or ideologues (partisans, libertarians, etc) can control it all.

The tough part is to actually figure out how to change anything. The US is probably the most corrupted rich country (Italy and Spain can compete – but they aren’t exactly as rich as we are). But there seems to be no ideas for how to change it and little interest in even caring about our own corruption.

How is AIPAC a corrupt organization? Are you buying into the lefty talking point that spending money to influence elections isn’t covered by the first amendment?

The democrat party machine consist of organizations and candidates who only stand for their own disparate groups and identities. They tell you this. “I’m here to represent the immigrants.” The Boston mayor excluded whites from the “colored only” Christmas parties. They support AA, which is the most Anti Asian policy since the Chinese exclusion act. They pass benefits intended only for POCs.

What right do the hypocrites have in accusing anyone of being controlled by outside influence? Two dems were indicted for being paid off my foreign governments. Their own kind runs most of these “influencers” – techs, banks, entertainment, etc. Am I to believe that an immigration group spending millions of dollars to advocate for amnesty is an act of justice, whereas AIPAC spending money to take down an antisemite who pulled a dangerous stunt to disrupt voting is darkly suspicious?

      1. JFree   1 year ago

Buying elected officials is pretty much the definition of corruption. AIPAC sure as fuck ain't donating without the expectation of a quid pro quo - a changed action or behavior.

Just because the 1A allows all that does not mean it isn't corruption. It just means that - that is one of the reasons the US is the most corrupt developed country. Our pols and govt and elections are for sale. And the 1A makes it damn near impossible to figure out how to get rid of the corruption because that would be a baby/bathwater thing.

Wrap your fucking head around those two disparate thoughts. Stop being a usefully blind idiot who is incapable of seeing corruption because you can't even conceive what it is outside some partisan horseshit that virtually no one cares about. You are the sort of voter who ensures the US will remain corrupt.

For heaven’s sakes, just say he lost because he’s an antisemite. His brand of progressivism in welcome on NY at all times, and he would have been reelected if 10/7 never occurred. This guy is actually who you think Trump is.

This is how the left will treat any of its heretics. If an immigration groups fends off GOP challenge by spending a gazillion dollars, it’s triumph. If that do that against democrats, they will the next AIPAC – a shadowy cabal that spends “dark money”. The left exists to demonize others as bigots. It is where they derive their power from.

My question would be...Did they properly label those "legal expenses" while they were trying to "conspire to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means,"?

    From Daily Caller:
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has sent millions of dollars to law firms that are intimately involved in an “unprecedented lawfare” campaign against former President Donald Trump, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records…

The DNC has paid close to $2 million since August of 2021 to Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP for “legal services”… Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP founding partner Roberta A. Kaplan represented E. Jean Carroll in her sexual assault and defamation suits against Trump…

The DNC has also paid Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP several million dollars… Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale And Dorr LLP has filed numerous Amicus briefs in the United States v. Donald Trump case, which concerns Trump’s potential criminal liability for actions related to the 2020 election.
