Hachikosela Muchimba, a U.S. Postal Service carrier in Washington, D.C., has been charged with mail theft and bank fraud. Prosecutors said Muchimba stole $1,697,909.52 in mailed checks, erased the payees' names, and deposited them in his bank account. In a search of his house, authorities allegedly found an ATM receipt in which Muchimba deposited a Treasury check for $415,173. Prosecutors say he tried to flee to Zambia when discovered.

Mail service is getting worse day by day. And they want to increase the cost of postage once again.

It is no use explaining to my post(wo)man that even numbered boxes are on the right side of the street, and odd-numbered ones are on the left. For she doesn't know her right from her left nor the difference between odd and even numbers.

Some neighbors have recently placed large wooden signs near their mailboxes with the house number painted in big letters and an arrow pointing to their box. That still doesn't help. Some days I have two or three neighbor's mail in my box and I have to redistribute the mail. Thankfully, my neighbors are all pretty honest and my own mail eventually makes it to my box.

Maybe the problem is that no one gives a shit about the Constitution - or governance.

The founders gave a really serious damn about post offices and post roads. For reasons that libertarians and conservatives always ignore in an attempt to get rid of those and privatize them for cronies.

I’m going to make two guess. I know the first one might seem crazy, but stick with me here:

As I learned on my paper route in my teens: Generally, North/West is even, South/East is odd. Not all states and municipalities adopt or abide the rule of thumb and the exceptions are too numerous to go into (roads can run North, South, East, *and* West, properties can be divided, roads can be re-routed, etc., etc.) but, generally, N/W Even, S/E Odd.

That's OK, we have a postal carrier who can't figure out whether he/she (switches from time to time) is on my street or one a mile away. Then the idiot(s) can't figure out which unit in the buildings is which unit (there's 4 per address - A through D), never mind that the unit letter is prominently displayed next to or above the mailbox for each unit.

Yeah, we live in an neighborhood that, because of geographic constraints, neighborhood customs, and community planning is effectively a low-density closed or gated neighborhood so, even for FedEx, UPS, and other package delivery we are effectively a/the training ground for FNGs. Even then, we occasionally get mail for the people the previous owner bought the house from (so we're talking almost 40 yrs. ago and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn the intended recipients are dead).

I'm not saying the postal workers are geniuses, but when their critics use egocentric coordinates rather than geocentric coordinates on the internet, you just have to laugh.

It doesn't have much to do with "diversity". The first thieving letter carrier I heard of was a white woman, around 1973. She was systematically stealing and cashing tax refund checks from the mail she was delivering. It was quite stupid of her not to realize that once the postal inspectors realized mail was being stolen, it would not take long to find that all the thefts were from a single delivery route...

Can you erase the name from checks without messing up the check? I always wondered how this woman managed to deposit several treasury checks a week without the bank becoming suspicious - but even changing the names wouldn't help that.
