California State Guidelines Discourage Schools From Offering Advanced Middle School Math
"California is promoting an approach to math instruction that's likely to reduce opportunities for disadvantaged students," writes math professor Brian Conrad.

A small but growing number of American schools are reducing or delaying access to advanced courses. Most often, these changes have been enacted in the name of reducing achievement gaps between demographic groups. However, rather than helping marginalized students, these policies deny educational opportunities for gifted students of all backgrounds.
"Detracking" is an increasingly popular proposal among educators that attempts to reduce the degree to which students are separated by academic ability. It typically takes the form of removing advanced course offerings or delaying the introduction of these offerings. Supporters claim that marginalized students are often wrongly placed—or place themselves—in less advanced courses and that these students often stay on a less advanced curricular path.
In San Francisco, public schools have eliminated accelerated math courses in middle and high school since 2014, and several Seattle schools had rolled out detracking efforts by 2016. Earlier this year, a Detroit-area school district eliminated middle school honors math classes, while schools in Cambridge, Massachusetts, began phasing out advanced middle school math in 2017—though the district announced it would reverse course in August. Outrage erupted in February when one Los Angeles–area school eliminated honors English courses for ninth- and 10th-grade students.
"I was born in Cuba," one parent told The Wall Street Journal, "and it doesn't sound good when people are trying to achieve equal outcomes for everyone."
This week, Brian Conrad, a mathematics professor and the director of undergraduate mathematics studies at Standford University, wrote in The Atlantic about this trend and the support for these policies voiced in new curriculum guidelines in California.
California's State Board of Education published a draft of the Math Framework (CMF) in 2021. The curriculum guideline promoted a series of radical changes to how the state teaches math. A revised version of the CMF was formally accepted this summer.
Under the CMF, Conrad wrote, California schools are encouraged, but not required, to delay Algebra I until ninth grade—meaning that students would be unable to take Calculus as seniors without doubling up on math classes or taking extra classes during the summer. The document also encourages schools to offer additional math options, including courses like "data science," as an alternative to taking Algebra II. But Conrad argues that this course, as described in the 2021 CMF, doesn't actually teach students math and instead more closely resembles a data literacy course.
"Steering sophomores and juniors away from Algebra II forecloses the possibility of careers in certain fast-growing quantitative fields—which would seem to do the opposite of promoting equity," Conrad wrote, noting that the state "is notably skeptical of efforts to group students in math class according to ability, out of a fear that disadvantaged students will be placed in low-expectation tracks that they can never escape. But for some reason, shunting them away from advanced math is portrayed as progress."
Conrad also points to a new working paper studying math detracking in San Francisco. The paper suggests that the policy has had the opposite effect as intended, reducing the percentage of black and Hispanic students enrolled in advanced math and making it harder for students to take calculus in high school. He noted how "later CMF drafts quietly removed the mention of the [San Francisco Unified School District] policy while still generally endorsing the ideas behind it."
It shouldn't come as a surprise that removing academic options doesn't magically reduce gaps between demographic groups. When schools reduce advanced courses, the students hurt most are poor, academically gifted children. While students with wealthy parents can enroll in private schools, hire tutors, or move districts to get the academic resources they need, kids whose parents don't have those resources will end up stuck in schools that force them to take lower-level courses. And for students who are falling behind, detracking can make it harder for them to get specialized help.
"Armed with trendy buzzwords and false promises of greater equity," Conrad wrote, "California is promoting an approach to math instruction that's likely to reduce opportunities for disadvantaged students—in the state and wherever else educators follow the state's lead."

So what?
Reason's most principled libertarian chemjeff says the real threat to American education comes from Chris Rufo and parents who don't want their public schoolkids learning CRT. You should write about them instead.

-Sandra and the Sandranistas
"should be thoroughly trained in the Fine Arts of bullying"
Nope. They should just have the option to take advanced math. "Diversity" be damned.
Now go ahead and post your Salon.com link about how election denial will bring about the end of American democracy (even though Democrats denied 2016 and you didn't care).
I don't recall any "HillaryPanzees gone apeshit" and saying "kill him with his own gun"? Got any cites on that?
One of my goals is to show that power-lusting Trumptards slobber over the prospect of getting MOAH POWAH for themselves, at ANY costs! Ethics, principles, people, law and order, a decent future for most people… ALL can and WILL be sacrificed for MOAH POWAH for Trumpturds!
READ the below and hang your tiny brainless, power-lusting shit-head in SHAME for always taking the side of Trumpanzees, power-luster-pig!

DC Police officer Michael Fanone: I had a choice to make: Use deadly force, which would likely result with the mob ending his life, or trying something else.
“Pro-law-and-order” Trumpturds take the side of trumpanzees going apeshit, making cops beg for their lives! For trying to defend democracy against mobocracy! Can you slime-wads sink ANY lower?!?!
Beyond that, whatabout that them thar whatabouts? Whatabout Hillary? Whatabout OJ Simpson?
How many brain cells does it take to run a socio-political simulation on the following:
Judge and Jury: “Murderer, we find you guilty of murder! 20 years in the hoosegow for YOU! Now OFF with ye!”
Murderer: “But OJ Simpson got off for murder, why not me? We’re all equal, and need to be treated likewise!”
Judge and Jury: “Oh, yes, sure, we forgot about that! You’re free to go! Have a good life, and try not to murder too many people, please! Goodbye!”
Now WHERE does this line of thinking and acting lead to? Think REALLY-REALLY HARD now, please! What ABOUT OJ Simpson, now? Can we make progress towards peace & justice in this fashion?
I don’t recall any “HillaryPanzees gone apeshit” and saying “kill him with his own gun”? Got any cites on that?
Unhinged leftist domestic terrorist James Hodgkinson did a lot more than say mean stuff, you absolute moron. 🙂
Twatabout Hodgkinson? Ergo, Trumpanzees gone apeshit are totes innocent, 'cause Hodgkinson's Disease? Did Hodgkinson join a RIOTING MOB trying to overturn an election? And is Hodgkinson now being turned into a SAINT by left-wingers?

I can’t imagine what horrific Harrison Bergeron inspired equalizer they would use to keep all the kiddos at the same level in math.
Forced lobotomies? Amputating fingers for the kids that are brighter than the rest of the little shitheads?
Actually, it sounds like a good idea to me. I'd be more than willing to have my offspring go to summer school for the extra courses, or put them in a private school if necessary (yes, I could afford it) to buy them a permanent leg up on the kids the liberals are trying to protect. Sooner or later, PC notwithstanding, there will be a pay differential in favor of the capable over the protected incapables that the capable can extract from employers becoming progressively more desperate to find someone who can actually determine the X when X^2 + Y^2 = 13 and Y - X = 1. My kids are able to. Will yours be?
How much more money will capable engineers who can design a bridge that will not fall in be when the protected can't even figure out how long the bridge will have to be to get across the river?
6!
Trick question! They won't be earning bubkes, because we won't be building bridges at all, because engineering is racist! It requires all that dumb-ass "objective, rational linear thinking" and "quantitative emphasis" and "emphasis on scientific method" that are hallmarks of whiteness, if not white supremacy (see "Aspects and Assumptions of White Culture in the United States" (https://andrewaustin.blog/2020/09/08/the-myth-of-white-culture/)). The only way to be truly anti-racist is to use ferries rather than bridges--or maybe just stay on your own side of the damn river.
I guess I didn't think about that!
Not allowing anyone to have more than ten of anything should reduce the need for advanced math skills.
Until all cripples can be healed fully, crippling everyone is the only viable path to achieving true equity.
Since equity is the declared objective of the CA State Government and the Newsom Regime, and was even at one point established as the critera for the lifting of the Covid lockdowns which actually hugely increased inequity on their own, we're committed to whatever leads to everyone ending up in the same place as the priority, and worrying about where that place might be is a discussion for another day (which if they have any say will never come).
Starting with eliminating advanced math is an obvious first step for "progress" since comprehension of mathematical concepts such as "second order" effects and non-linear relationships is one of the biggest obstacles to acceptance of "progressive" economic dogma.
Just wait until LAUSD declares that since they can't manage to get a 100% literacy and English Language fluency rate for HS graduates in the district, they're going to have to end all instruction in both reading and English, and any students caught learning to read outside of schools will be expelled on a "zero tolerance" basis...
"...and any students caught learning to read outside of schools will be expelled on a “zero tolerance” basis…"
I was thinking similar things... Self-teaching will be OUTLAWED!
Ya beat me to it! Good job!
(PS, I recall some years ago that the French were mandating 35-hours (???) work weeks or less, and people were having to CAREFULLY sneak work home in order to get ahead!)
The result of French labor laws is a system in which most economists figure that 10% unemployment is about as low as they can ever expect to get.
That 35 hour work week and ban on overtime was an attempt to force employers to hire more employees or else not get all their necessary work done. UAW might be trying to accomplish the same thing with their demand for 5 days pay on 4 days working; the more workers the union has, the more paychecks they're skimming for Dem party soft money.
Literally what your worthless Commie ass was calling for a few short posts above, dumbfuck.
Why don't they just admit that they're trying to stunt people's ability to be numerate?
I belong to the Church of the Holy Algebra! Since Algebra is now a RELIGION, it should be OFF LIMITS TOTALLY in the pubic schools!
"Why don’t they just admit..." That would be saying the quiet part out loud.
If they follow the recent supreme court rulings and stop tracking by race, these "problems" go away.
I suspect they realize if the kids actually learn to think, they will leave the state upon graduation, and never pay CA taxes.
Equality is the lowest common denominator.
It’s Equity that they’re enforcing.
“The percentage of students in California who performed at or above the NAEP Proficient level was 23 percent in 2022. This percentage was smaller than that in 2019 (29 percent) and was greater than that in 2000 (17 percent).”
https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/subject/publications/stt2022/pdf/2023011CA8.pdf
Perhaps they feel California public schools are over performing.
In today's episode of "Commies doing commie things, followed by everyone doing worse"...
Progs have long hated math but claim to fucking love science. Math is the language of science supposedly, if you assume science is based on data/numbers and not feelings.
They love "The Science".
Not science.
Nobody could take trannyism seriously if you actually gave a shit about actual science.
Which brings me to my other point. Until the printing press was invented, only the clergy could learn to read and write Latin and Ancient Greek. The ruling class today doesn’t want the unwashed masses to understand numbers.
>>likely to reduce opportunities for disadvantaged students
hey Emma you catching on to the whole "the Left hates minorities" gig yet?
Maybe instead of dumbing down or tracking the kids they should raise math knowledge standards for 5/6/7/8 grade math teachers? They should all be competent to teach algebra and geometry. Maybe trig/calc/stats for HS teachers.
Even if most students can't/wont take math courses well ahead of their grade level (almost by definition), that supply/demand issue should not be a teaching constraint.
Your side doesn't want that, that's the problem.
California State Guidelines Discourage Schools From Offering Advanced Middle School Math
Oh, so we're gonna do that Kultur War Hurr Durr thing are we? So I guess maybe NOT sitting on the sidelines is what Libertarians should choose.
Seems like the Libertarian take on this should be that it's just one more data point proving the importance of school choice and not forcing the least fortunate students and those in need of the most help to settle for unaccountable and failing public schools which are either moribund in trying to get union teachers to buy in on any kind of productive reforms or engaged in some kind of "race to the bottom" as a means of equalizing outcomes for all students in the most practical way that "equity" is almost always achieved (crushing the prosperous rather than elevating the downtrodden).
The immediate problem is that private schools are totally chained to state rules and are at present arguably even more “captured” than the public schools are right now. You also can’t fight it with things like 1A and and hired speech rules after it’s been “privatized”. Plus you’re still going to have to live and work under the commie cyborgs the public schools are pumping out at much higher rates.
Just my humble opinion on why the simple libertarian answer isn’t really enough, right now. Gotta fight this thing in the public schools.
If private schools are getting government funding, through a "voucher" type of system or something like what's done in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden where parents get to choose which school (subject to enrollment capacities) their children and their allocation of public education funds go to (from what I've read, almost all primary/secondary schools in Denmark are privately run but mostly publicly funded), then factors like 1A protection can start to apply; civil rights laws would seem to require some level of 1A protection to students/faculty at private schools, although those protections aren't exactly broadly applied on campus at a great many public schools in the USA.
Private schools at least tend not to be "closed shops" for union teachers the way public schools are, and in some cases don't negotiate with the teachers' unions even over employment of former/current members. Given the integral relationship between the Teachers' Unions and Democratic Party organizations at both the state/local and national levels, public schools in "blue" areas have little to no hope of any meaningful reform since any attempt at innovation by administrators is not only going to have be be approved by the Union for employment contracting, but the Unions can/will also end-run the administrators and school boards to also get opposition coming from state/local officials either by legislation or by adding conditions to funding appropriations. There's a reason why CA schools which allowed measels vaccination rates to drop to 20-30% among students had Covid vaccine/booster mandates until the day in 2023 when Newsom finally ceded the "emergency powers" which he'd been abusing to a comical extent for three full years; that reason has nothing to do with "following the science" considering how much more transmissible and dangerous Measles has always been in comparison to most strains of Covid (it's possible that some of the nearly harmless "Omega" strains were close to being as contagious as measles).
It's the same basic concept. To make things "equal and fair" we lower everyone down, not raise everyone up.
It's so cliched at this point, it's amazing we can't seem to learn this lesson.
Yes, one party benefits when everyone is equally intellectually challenged
They pulled similar shit in the 80s when I was in Jr High. They said it was "esteem" then, the people not allowed into the honors and advanced classes were having their self esteem damaged.
Getting through Algebra in 8th grade would have done wonders for me going into college. Likewise, the statistics class I was forced to take (randomly assigned, you weren't allowed to choose) instead of calculus in high school cost me dearly in college.
They squashed that shit within a couple of years, and everyone could get pre-calculus, but my point is that this shit has happened and failed already. Doing it now, but more so, is just going to make it fail even more. I'm so glad I don't have a teenaged in public school right now.
My son was counseled 20+ years ago to take AP Statistics as a senior as it was the apex math class at his California public high school. Fortunately, dear old dad, having taken much more math than his counselor, told him bullsh*t, Statistics was a dead end and he should plan on taking AP Calculus as a senior which will allow him to hit the ground running in college no matter what his major.
Dad won. Stuck in California, my condolences.
Real statisticians use calculus. Teaching stats without calculus is like teaching navigation to someone who believes that the Earth is flat.
Yes, I know. I once took a real 400/500 series Statistics course in college for fun and aced the class. But AP Statistics isn't calculus based. A dead end.
California high schools want to have a summative math course that doesn't require the knowledge that Calculus needs... because they know they cannot deliver it.
People have been wondering why private schools enrollment has been going up tremendously and I think we have the answer here. If schools aren't going to teach courses that keep kids engaged then parents will go elsewhere, even if it means paying for it. How are students supposed to get into top universities (or even so so ones) if they don't have the course work they need before applying.
"Supporters claim that marginalized students are often wrongly placed—or place themselves—in less advanced courses and that these students often stay on a less advanced curricular path."
Why would these kids' Tiger Moms stand for this?
Come on! You doesn't need to kno algerbra to pull the Democrat lever.
Sad for our country when eqity replaces excellence in our schools.
It replaced that with naming SCOTUS justices and Senators.
As a public school victim for 18 years I can testify that govt. schools are indoctrination, introduction to "The Most Dangerous. Superstition" (by Larken Rose).
Public schools have been run mostly on the principle of "no child getting ahead" for at least 60 years. Now they're eliminating the exceptions. Your grandkids will all be gardeners and maids for the wealthy elite that can send their kids to private school while still paying outrageous taxed for public schools, and for the powerful that can create tax-funded special programs for their kids only.
Or so the idiot elistists think, because they think robots can make everything they need without requiring smart, well-educated engineers and technicians to design, build, and repair those automated production lines. Bob Hope's line about zombies and Democrats comes to mind...
I wonder how C. F. Gauss would have fared had he lived in modern California?
Does Language Precede Thought? Sapir/Whorf vs. Racism, & the Neo-Confucian Solution
In American Indian Model of the Universe (1956), Benjamin Lee Whorf observed that Hopi verbs use one tense the far past and the far future, and in parallel, that Hopis had severe problems understanding how worktime punchclocks work. This led to his conclusion that "language precedes thought." A linguist called Edward Sapir independently had the same notion, leading to its naming as the "Sapir/Whorf Hypothesis." Disputes on the inference naturally followed, including whether Whorf's observations were reliable.
Sapir/Whorf in Educational Practice
In Chicago, Educational Curriculum Designers reasoned that the theory could be true, whatever one believes about Whorf's punchclock observation. In Chicago at the time, they were struggling with what to do about the low performance of African Americans in simple algebra. leading to low achievements in IQ and SAT tests. They reasoned that African-American dialects contain illogical constructions, in particular, that their double negative (such as in "I can't get no satisfaction") indicates emphasis; but in Maths, a double negative cancels itself out to make a positive number.
They therefore added a spatial test category to the IQ test, and modified other test categories, to compensate for what psychologists call "cognitive dissonance" between natural language and Aristotelian logic. At least according to Sapir/Whorf, cognitive dissonance from non-Aristotelian dialects causes a delay in algebraic evaluation, reducing performance on timed Maths tests.
LEM Research banned, due to Racial Conflict
Naturally, there was some dispute on the extent and nature of double negatives too. At the time, the emphasis was on the extent, or rather frequency, ignoring semantic sophistications. But since then, litotes of amazing complexity have been found all the way back to Cicero. As a simple example, litotes such as "not bad" can intentionally invoke a humorous ambiguity, if used to imply "but not good either."
Thus, it could equally be argued that proper use of double negation can demonstrate a deeper understanding of the limits on Aristotle's Law of Excluded Middle (LEM), and thus, familiarity with the double negative could ALSO demonstrate a superior understanding of set intersections, at the loss of faster binary true/false computation.
However, the Chicago researchers never reached the LEM argument. Instead, unfortunately, African Americans who were not performing well in school felt that the Sapir/Whorf hypothesis implied they were naturally stupid. the objections became racial demonstrations. The demonstrations became violent. Academics received death threats. Further research on the Sapir Whorf hypothesis was banned, and its research literature removed from libraries in a somewhat horrific act of forced bowdlerization.
The ban was somewhat ironic, because the IQ tests had already been adjusted and did indeed improve African American scores. However, the SAT college entrance exams were more difficult to modify, and remained the same. So now African Americans perform well in IQ tests, but still perform badly in Maths.
The Current Debate on Maths in California
About a decade ago, San Francisco was having a severe problem with that in the poorer neighborhoods of Oakland. To avoid invoking the Sapir/Whorf hypothesis yet again (renamed as "linguistic relativity" and carefully avoiding any implication that it affects intelligence), San Francisco said students from different cultures needed more time to learn English before starting on Maths. It stopped teaching Algebra in middle school.
This year, a Stanford University study found that African Americans were still underperforming. Last month, it was announced that San Francisco was considering delaying a start in algebra even more, until after the first or even second year in high school. At the same time, it has stated it believes advanced maths should be delayed in all schools until after middle school.
The opposite concern has been that children have more difficulty acquiring fundamental new concepts as they age.
STEM Performance, Domestic vs. China
I am not permitted to say delaying Maths education places more algebraically talented students at a disadvantage. That would be racist. However, the USA's lower performance in Maths overall has already caused the USA to drop four years behind China in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) subjects,
In fact, all Asian nations participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) are far outperforming the USA.
Resolution by Neo-Confucianist Values
So here is the neo-Confucianist perspective. In accordance with the Confucian Manifesto, ever since its adoption at the collapse of the Maoist regime, China has sought to advance itself in STEM subjects because it was so far behind the West.
But neo-Confucianism does not recognize superior talent in making money as the only goal. As far as Asia is concerned, the three most important pillars of society are respect for elders ("filial piety'), honesty, and benevolence. Hence, according to neo-Confucianism, improvements in respect for elders, honesty and benevolence should make up for the shortfall better than anything else.
Perhaps the worst comment on the USA's scholastic performance is how little respect for elders, honesty, and benevolence are valued in the nation. With more respect for those values, researchers would be able to finish the research on LEM started by Sapir/Whorf and suggest better ways to teach Maths, without fearing for their lives.
