Kevin McCarthy's Impeachment Inquiry Provokes Predictably Polarized Reactions

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has launched an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden | Aaron Schwartz / Xinhua News Agency/Newscom

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's announcement of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his connections to his son Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings is provoking some predictably polarized reactions. Most liberal commenters and Democratic elected officials have largely dismissed the effort as a hypocritical, evidence-free witch hunt, while ardent conservatives are cheering the effort to finally hold the Biden Crime Family accountable.

"Launching this illegitimate inquiry is a distraction," said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D–N.Y.) yesterday. "Instead of focusing on doing the business of the American people, Extreme MAGA Republicans are doing the bidding of their puppet master in chief, Donald Trump."

It's "based on the weakness of Kevin McCarthy's speakership, the fact that he doesn't have the moral authority with his members, doesn't have control over his caucus, and is beholden to the most extreme elements who want an impeachment of Joe Biden, an impeachment without evidence," Rep. Adam Schiff (D–Calif.) told CNN's Wolf Blitzer yesterday.

Kevin McCarthy's announcement of a bogus impeachment inquiry into President Biden is based on two things: McCarthy's weakness as speaker, and his willingness to do Trump's bidding.

It's certainly not based on evidence or facts. pic.twitter.com/Ey4qnyIetY

House Republicans meanwhile are arguing there's ample cause to proceed with an impeachment inquiry.

"Bank records, suspicious activity reports, emails, texts, and witness testimony reveal Joe Biden allowed his family to sell him as 'the brand' around the world to enrich the Bidens," said Reps. James Comer (R–Ky.), Jim Jordan (R–Ohio), and Jason Smith (R–Mo.) who have been leading the House's investigation into the Biden's foreign business dealings, in a joint statement.

????IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY????@HouseGOP has uncovered an overwhelming amount of evidence showing @POTUS lied to the American people about his knowledge & participation in his family's influence peddling schemes.

I fully support @SpeakerMcCarthy opening an impeachment inquiry.???? pic.twitter.com/feFLOMU6HN

— Rep. James Comer (@RepJamesComer) September 12, 2023

Most Republican presidential candidates, including former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, had given their support to a formal impeachment inquiry before McCarthy's announcement. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christe said an investigation into Biden's alleged corruption is warranted, but a full impeachment inquiry is premature.

Some journalists and liberal commenters have criticized Republicans' procedural hypocrisy. In 2019, Republicans criticized then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) for opening an impeachment inquiry without a full vote of the House. Now, McCarthy is doing the same thing in 2023.

In 2019, Kevin McCarthy blasted Nancy Pelosi and Democrats for opening an impeachment inquiry into President Trump without a full House vote, asking her to suspend the probe.

Now, he is opening an impeachment probe into President Biden without a House vote. pic.twitter.com/GWxzwHHMBH

The conservative pushback is that it's all part of the reaping/sowing process.

Here's the pattern:

-Democrats make unprecedented rule change
-Republicans warn of consequences if Democrats lose
-Democrats lose
-Republicans operate under new rule
-Democrats complain
-Media dutifully screams hypocrisy

See: filibuster, committee ousters, and now impeachment https://t.co/tyAV4yRwMh

— Ben Domenech (@bdomenech) September 12, 2023

Some conservative writers are landing between "impeachment now" and "politicized witchhunt" when assessing McCarthy's impeachment inquiry.

"In announcing the move, McCarthy noted that to date, 'House Republicans have uncovered serious, credible, allegations into President Biden's conduct.' This is true, and a tribute to the GOP investigation, but all of it has happened through a vigorous oversight process that has operated outside of impeachment," reads a National Review editorial from yesterday. "The speaker argues that having an open impeachment inquiry will provide more power to investigators to get more answers, but it also creates more pressure to produce a smoking gun and, potentially, to proceed further down the impeachment track regardless."

Republican senators have expressed similar concern that the impeachment inquiry is premature, reports The Hill. It won't remove Biden but will plausibly derail negotiations over a spending resolution that must pass by the end of the month to avoid a federal government shutdown.

The Libertarian Party, meanwhile, has thrown its support behind the Republicans' impeachment inquiry while insisting the best remedy is to place Biden under conservatorship.

The Libertarian Party is in full support of Speaker McCarthy's impeachment inquiry into President Biden, based on the allegations of corruption. But it shouldn't stop there, and his lack of effort in calling for an actual vote to give it legal pertinence means it will accomplish…

FREE MINDS

A federal appeals court has ruled that a Catholic group doesn't need special permission from zoning officials in Michigan to install a Stations of the Cross prayer trail on private property. Reports CBS:

The court ruled 3-0 in favor of the group and issued an injunction Monday, saying Genoa Township in Livingston County was likely violating the rights of Missouri-based Catholic Healthcare International, which controls the 40-acre wooded parcel.

The township had said a special-use permit was needed because the project was the equivalent of a church building. The religious group objected but ultimately responded with a plan for a chapel and trail after spending thousands of dollars on the application. It was rejected.

Catholic Healthcare obtained the land from the Lansing Catholic Diocese to create a trail with the Stations of the Cross, 14 stops that commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus.

Stations of the Cross stayed up until the township in 2021 persuaded a state judge to order removal. Catholic Healthcare, meanwhile, filed a lawsuit in federal court, invoking a law that protects religious groups in zoning matters.

FREE MARKETS

Inflation continues to make Americans poorer. The latest numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau found that cost of living increases have surpassed rising incomes for the third year in a row, reports The Wall Street Journal:

Americans' inflation-adjusted median household income fell to $74,580 in 2022, declining 2.3% from the 2021 estimate of $76,330, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. The amount has dropped 4.7% since its peak in 2019.

Nevertheless, things could be looking a little brighter for workers by the end of 2023:

This year could be different. Earnings and inflation trends have improved as a strong labor market and cooling price increases boosted household purchasing power, said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank.

"Shifting into the present and into the future, the prospects are better for wages to make up for some of the ground lost during the last couple of years," Adams said.

QUICK HITS

  • Markets in everything? The Wagner Group, the Russian mercenary organization, has been trying to win hearts and minds in Africa with its own brand of beer.
  • In non-impeachment Congressional news, House Republicans are pushing a defense spending bill to end the military's COVID-19 vaccine mandates and stop the transfer of cluster bombs to Ukraine.

Just finished Rules Committee tonight. On defense appropriations bill we will have votes on amendments to

Prohibit COVID military vax mandate

Prohibit military mask mandate

Prohibit xfer of cluster munitions

Prohibit US troop deployment to Ukraine

and 180 other amendments.

  • Transportation modes, both old and new, did no favors to a San Francisco man who was struck by a public bus. The ambulance that took him to the hospital reportedly got stuck behind two stopped driverless cars.
  • Senate Democrats are holding a closed-door forum today with tech billionaires Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Sundar Pichai about the promise and perils of artificial intelligence. Surely, they won't use the opportunity to push protectionist regulations.
  • Speaking of protectionist regulations: California lawmakers are considering limiting the use of artificial intelligence to replace actors.
  • Yet another public official overseeing construction activity is being charged as part of a corruption investigation. Former New York City Buildings commissioner Eric Ulrich is supposed to surrender to local law enforcement this morning, reports Politico. It's not an accident that this keeps happening.

“It’s time for the media to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies,” Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House Counsel’s Office, wrote in the letter, according to a draft copy obtained by CNN.

While news organizations have published innumerable fact checks on the matter, they have also often failed to robustly call out the mis- and disinformation peddled by Republicans in their coverage, frustrating officials in the Biden White House who believe that the news media should be doing more to dispel lies that saturate the public discourse.

Sen. Tim Scott says people point out that he’s single because they ‘can’t say I’m Black’ Bryan Metzger Sep 12, 2023, 9:52 AM EDT . “It’s like a different form of discrimination or bias,” the 2024 GOP presidential candidate told the Washington Post. “You can’t say I’m Black, because that would be terrible, so find something else that you can attack.” . Scott also said other GOP contenders may be seeking to “sow seeds of doubt” about his campaign and finding a way to say “that guy isn’t one of us” with the insinuations about his personal life. . Even Matt Schlapp, the head of the American Conservative Union who was himself accused earlier this year of sexually assaulting a man, joked to the Post that former President Donald Trump would be picking “a gay vice president” if he selected Scott as his running mate.

"But there is another side. There was a group on this side. You can call them the left -- you just called them the left -- that came violently attacking the other group. So you can say what you want, but that’s the way it is.

Reporter: (Inaudible) "… both sides, sir. You said there was hatred, there was violence on both sides. Are the --"

Trump: "Yes, I think there’s blame on both sides. If you look at both sides -- I think there’s blame on both sides. And I have no doubt about it, and you don’t have any doubt about it either. And if you reported it accurately, you would say."

Reporter: "The neo-Nazis started this. They showed up in Charlottesville to protest --"

Trump: "Excuse me, excuse me. They didn’t put themselves -- and you had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides.

              What I claimed.

No, you didn't. What you claimed was:

One side was Neo-Nazi, KKK, and other alt-right protesters

I.e., knowing full well what the actual quote says - that the "both sides" is "Left" and "Right," pointing out that some of the "left-wing" protestors were also engaging in violence - you're explicitly pretending that by "both sides" he meant both Nazis and non-Nazi right-wingers, so that you can still pretend, despite the clear and obvious meaning of his actual words, that he was praising Nazis.

What make me curious is why you think such an obvious and desperate lie will persuade anybody of anything other than that you're a partisan hack whose assertions can be safely dismissed?

Very interesting article about how gradual adoption of air conditioning in Washington, D.C. has affected the government of our nation.

Impeachment should be for crimes. Not for the purpose of political punishment, or tit for tat, or making points with your base. The impeachment effort against Biden is wrong, the impeachments (plural) against Trump were wrong. Even the one against Clinton was wrong.

Nixon's impending impeachment was on target. There was evidence that he was involved with the Watergate break-in in some manner. Not proven of course, but enough evidence to warrant an impeachment.

    Andy Johnson's impeachment, also bullshit.

Do we need another method to remove a president from office? HELL YEAH! But Impeachment is not it. Some sort of Vote of No Confidence. But the President was not elected by Congress, he should not be removed by a simple majority of Congress. It should be a super majority.

But we don't have that system. Impeachment is not that system.

If Congress is so damned concerned, then maybe Congress shouldn't have handed over to much fucking power to the President. It's time for Congress to reform Congress.

And in stark contrast, all evidence, memos, letters, statements indicate that the US and EU were more than happy with Shokin all the way up until Joe demanded he be fired. This demand was so out of the blue, the state department was caught off guard by it.

          2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

Yeah, that he specially asked for an announcement of an investigation rather than asking for an investigation was a feature of Trump’s “perfect” phone call that really stood out as odd when I read the transcript.

I doubt an investigation in Ukraine would have revealed any more than what was already public knowledge: Biden’s worthless son traded on his dad’s name, and Biden made no effort to stop him.

Now, some funds Hunter received may have found their way into dad’s accounts, but a Ukraine investigation wouldn’t uncover that. As I’ve said before, Comer (and now McCarthy) need to have some forensic accountants do the hard homework of digging through the Biden family accounts looking for a smoking gun such as “co-mingling” of funds that violate specific tax laws, or other laws.

            1. JesseAz   2 years ago

"Now, some funds Hunter received may have found their way into dad’s accounts,"

Is this some "Red SUV" style cope or something? The money "found itself" there as if it deposited itself into Joe's accounts by mistake?

              1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

No, it’s a fairly common expression, with a slightly saracastic connotation that the money didn’t really just find it’s way there passively.

The sarcasm was subtle, so I can see where you might miss it. But you seem to have missed the main point entirely: “some forensic accountants [need to] do the hard homework of digging through the Biden family accounts …”

The Republicans haven’t done the hard work to come up with a smoking gun. The closest they’ve gotten is vaguely demonstrating “co-mingling” of funds. The problem of stopping at showing “co-mingling” is that you haven’t shown that any money that, say, made it’s way from Hunter to Joe wasn’t subsequently repaid by Joe.

Co-mingling in itself isn’t illegal. Tax laws allow gifting money and loaning money among family, but there are tax laws limiting gifts and requiring reporting of large gifts.

I mean, it depends whether McCarthy is going for an impeachment based on ethics or on breaking laws. If it's only going to be based on ethics, we've all known that Joe Biden's ethics are shady for a few years now.

                1. R Mac   2 years ago

"The Republicans haven’t done the hard work to come up with a smoking gun."

Outside of the bank records, the multiple bank issued Suspicious Activity reports, the wire transfers, the Privat bank transactions, the LLCs, the texts, the emails, the WhatsApp messages, the photos of Joe with Hunter’s business partners he said he didn’t meet, the voicemails to his son, the two business partners advertising Joe as “The Brand”, the “big guy” and “the chairman”, the two whistleblowers testimonies, the recorded phone calls between Biden and Poroshenko, the video of Joe bragging about the firing of the Ukrainian prosecutor, email showing Joe’s VP office helping Hunter directly, and Hunter’s statements about having to give his father half his income, there is no smoking gun.

Are you of the belief that Stalin offered folks an opportunity to present their side at show trials?

                  Anyway, I made a factual statement. Here's a cite:

                  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kevin-mccarthy-jan-6-committee-picks-removed-pelosi-rejects-jim-jordan-jim-banks/

Seems like if I make a factual statement, and then another person says that my factual statement is "gaslighting", that person may be the one doing the gaslighting.

                  1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

No. You're still gaslighting, Pelosi didn't give them a choice. From your own "cite":

"McCarthy made that announcement Wednesday afternoon, moments after Pelosi said, "With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan." She did not elaborate further on her decision to reject them."

She rejected every Republican pick who wasn't one of the NeverTrumpers like Cheney who would give her the kangaroo court she wanted. No explanations. She gave the Republicans a list which would lead to the result she was engineering and was unethical as fuck.

You knew this and still lied about it.

                    “Anyway, I made a factual statement. Here’s a cite”

Your cite proves they curated a viewpoint and did not allow any other viewpoints in their banana republic show trial, backing up what I said. Excellent own-goal brother

“Seems like if I make a factual statement, and then another person says that my factual statement is “gaslighting” that person may be the one doing the gaslighting.”

We dont need to get that meta about it, all those extra gaslightings cancel themselves out since your source proved you wrong, so the initial “Laursen is gaslighting” seems to be what’s left. I could probably use this to help my kid learn how to multiply fractions quickly though.

                    1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Don't agree. Sure, the Republicans didn't lead the committee, but they could have done a lot to curtail the "show trial" by having Republicans on the panel.

It looks to me like the Republicans maneuvered so they would be able to paint the proceedings as a "show trial".

      Disagree.

The "Congress shouldn't have..." horse has long since left the barn, and a new method for removing a president will never happen.

Until the American public starts to elect reluctant leaders, the only way to restrain presidential power is to make the power-hungry narcissist in the Oval Office (ie: any modern POTUS) nervous of impeachment with every statement and pen-stroke.

The question is did Kevin McCarthy get enough for the impeachment inquiry. Can he get the budget work done? From the way Matt Gaetz talked yesterday, it appears that McCarthy folded and got nothing. The ability to get done what has to be done is a measure of your success at a job. It does not appear that McCarthy is anything but a failure.

Let’s assume for a moment that Biden is simply indulging in “honest graft” – enriching himself from his office while steering clear of specific crimes.

In the impeachment context, I’m one who thinks impeachable crimes need not be indictable, they just need to be serious abuses of office.

It was his responsibility to warn foreigners about his son - “he’s going to be trying to get money from you by promising access to me, but he’s off his rocker, poor kid, so don’t rely on him, you won’t get anything.”

And to Hunter he could have said to stay off official government planes.

And separated his bank account, unambiguously, from his son’s.

I’d go with an impeachment theory by which if an official, warned about family members trading on his name to a really gross extent, fails to take preventive action, he’s guilty.

    Anything I missed?

    1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

Absolutely. There’s no reason impeachment must be limited to actual crimes.

It’s not even needed for dealing with crime. The reason we have impeachment is to deal with misconduct in office.

I was all did impeaching Trump, and am all for impeaching Biden. Having said that, I have to admit the idea of President Harris scares me where I would have been OK with a President Pence.

Realistically, just like Trump, it’s likely that if Biden is impeached there still won’t be the votes to remove him from office.

      3. ducksalad   2 years ago (edited)

One impeachment in the first 209 years of the Constitution. Three impeachments, working on a fourth, in the last 25 years.

I figure from now on we’ll have a “tradition” of impeach-but-don’t-convict every time a new House is seated with a majority not in the president’s party.

And they’ll all deserve it, and we'll deserve it too.

        1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

In my opinion, a lot more Presidents in US history should have been impeached.

(And just a fact check: Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868.)

          1. ducksalad   2 years ago

Yeah, that was the one I counted as "one impeachment in the first 209 years".

In the last 25 years I was counting Clinton once and Trump twice. Did I miss one?

            1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

No, I thought you were referring to the Clinton impeachment. You know, you go 209 years and then you have the Clinton impeachment. Isn't 2009 - 1789 = 220, by the way?

              1. Minadin   2 years ago

It would have been weird for Clinton to be impeached in 2009. But, We have impeached people after leaving office since then, I guess.

  43. Uomo Del Ghiaccio   2 years ago

I dislike Trump and never voted for him, however I shed zero tears for the anti-trump conspirators and their underhanded tactics.

They utilized impeachment as a political weapon, so how can they legitimately complain when it is used against them? Even so, Joe Biden is not being impeached, just investigated.

There are serious questions with Joe Biden that should be brought to light. Personally there were enough actions that should have disqualified Joe Biden from becoming president. I have similar feelings regarding Trump as well.

I'm in favor of investigating Joe Biden for behaviors while he was a senator, vice president and now as president. There are far too many items that are fishy.

If Joe Biden was a republican, the corporate media would have a field day with an endless feeding frenzy or new stories. Instead the corporate media are sycophantic partisans attempting to cover up any wrongdoing.
