The University of Michigan Will Force Students With COVID To Leave Campus
A likely consequence: Sick students will avoid going to the university hospital.

Students who test positive for COVID-19 at the University of Michigan this fall will be forced in many cases to leave campus—an extreme measure that may well encourage sick people to avoid seeking medical attention at all.
Jay Bhattacharya, a professor of medicine and health policy at Stanford University who has frequently challenged prevailing orthodoxies about pandemic restrictions, called attention to the policies on X, describing them as "cruel."
At the @UMich, students testing covid positive must leave their dorms for 5 days & live in the community. A hotel room or a relative's house is ok.
This cruel policy is designed to spread covid from the university into the wild. It won't stop covid from spreading @umich. pic.twitter.com/Yfn58QKcut
— Jay Bhattacharya (@DrJBhattacharya) September 3, 2023
According to the Care and Isolation section of the university's website, students are required to report a positive COVID-19 test to the health authorities—unless, of course, they tested vis-à-vis the school's medical system, in which case the authorities already have the result. The university will then contact the students to discuss their isolation; importantly, students living in dormitories are required to temporarily move out, even if they reside in single units.
The rules suggest that students should return home, especially if they can get there without using public transportation. While the university specifies that students should consider returning home if there they have access to their own bedrooms and bathrooms, it does not acknowledge that sending students home may be the very worst idea of all, given that their parents are probably at greater risk of a negative COVID-19 outcome than their college roommates.
The rules are so extreme and disruptive that many students will probably avoid taking COVID-19 tests, even if they are seriously ill. Imagine a student who presumes he has a bacterial infection and desperately needs antibiotics; does he dare risk going to the university hospital and testing positive for COVID-19, especially if that means ejection from his dormitory?
Instead of creating a police state to punish students for contracting COVID-19—something that is, let's face it, wholly unavoidable—perhaps university health officials could work harder to provide accommodations for students who get sick and voluntarily agree to quarantine. Alas, the website notes that "isolation spaces on campus are extremely limited." Making them less limited seems like a better use of time than hunting down COVID-positive students and exiling them from campus.

Just can’t give up the Covid madness yet.
It worked fabulously well. Of course the authoritarians are not going to give up on it.
I'm making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning 16,000 US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. Everybody must try this job now by just using this website... http://www.Payathome7.com
I am now making more than 350???? dollars per day by working online from home without investing any money.Join this link posting job now and start earning without investing or selling anything……. http://Www.Easywork7.com
2024 is just around the corner, and Biden is not doing so well against his likely opponent, despite multiple questionable charges. So they are respecting to plan B.
Has it been two weeks already?
Even in California, people are over it. Mask wearing is below 10%, no one takes the tests anymore, and no one quarantines. They just treat it like a bad cold/flu, stay home when they're sick, and then go back to work.
When will common sense ever return to college campuses? This makes zero sense. These are young adults between 18 and 21 years of age, generally in good health. I just recovered from Covid. I'm 58 and it was like a light flu for about 1.5 days and then a head cold (cough/sinus drip) for 1.5 days. By day 4.5 I was feeling fine. ZERO reason to ask college students to leave campus. Writer is correct another misplaced leftist rule will once again have negative ancillary consequences.
It's truly an idea so stupid only a university could come up with it.
I'm almost 70 and I've had cancer twice. I had Covid in December, and it was a nonevent, I had no symptoms at all. while I don't want to tempt fate, I see no reason for young, healthy people to be raging paranoids about a virus that, at its worst, affected very few college-age people. I'm going to be careful this winter but I'm simply not buying into the paranoia that keeps Democrats in office.
Stop the fucking testing. What difference does it make if someone has covid or some other cold or flu virus? It amazes me how many people are still taking covid tests when they start to have a sniffle. There is just no good reason for it at all as far as I can see. If you are sick, you should do what you need to to get better and try not to get other people sick.
My kids and I somehow survived with never testing.
Me too.
This is the natural result. I know many families out here who just stopped buying COVID tests. My kid missed out on summer camp because he had the faintest scratchy throat and tested, only to test positive. He was trying to be a "good citizen" and all he got was a missed week of fun (and all his friends came home with COVID afterwords, and nothing else happened).
Why would anyone bother to test if they are going to be treated completely different?
A big part of the “supply chain” problems the past few years were from people forced to miss 2 weeks of work because they tested positive, even though they had no symptoms and weren’t contagious.
Completely agree. This is just like any other illness/sickness (i.e., cold or flu). If you can, stay at home, get well, and then continue on with your life. Its insane at this point with all the testing. I had a bad sore throat last week and I just stopped telling people I couldn’t go to work because I was sick because I got sick of everyone asking me if I’d been tested. What does it matter if I had tested? It wouldn’t have changed anything.
If you don't want to risk killing grandma by infecting her with the plague, you'd better not get the plague. It's easy enough to do, just wear 5 masks at all times, get vaccinated twice per day, never get within hailing distance of any living thing, keep yourself locked in the bathroom, wash your hands 48 times per hour, tape a plastic bag around your head, and prepare to shoot yourself in the head if you should cough. Remember that college students only have a 99.99% chance of surviving a bout with the flu and a horrible ghastly painful death is all but assured.
Jfree approves this message.

University of Michigan. The state where Gretchen Whitmer, one of the great COVID dictators rules.
The buzz is that she will be the Dems pick for 2024 if Biden croaks (or they can no longer pretend he’s still living)
Oh no, Gavin Newsom is the pick, the man who kept California safe from COVID, cured homelessness, and nipped crime in the bud.
The good news here is that institutional officials haven't learned a single thing from the last three years of COVID. They still believe masks work, they still believe in the same social distancing bullshit, they still believe vaccines are safe and effective, so this will be an excellent opportunity for Reason to be gearing up as the premier COVID-Regime oppositional media outlet as we head into flu Season. This is your second chance to ring that bell...
IDK. The policy feels like we should be a bit more neutral with regard to the MUH PRIVUT INSTITUSHUNZ! angle.
Even if you’re employed by them, your University shouldn’t be your healthcare provider in the first place. You’re supposed to be learning how to become a adult, find your own doctor and figure out your healthcare. If you’re such a child that you can’t figure that out, then yeah, expect to get tested for COVID, croup, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease and asked that you stay home from the nursery until you’re better if you come up positive.
The fact that some are still clinging to the policy out of dogged coof-phobia and (further) dragging down the University system is just icing on the cake.
As I remember it, student health insurance expected a student to go to the student health center, and was part of ones university fees.
"The good news here is that institutional officials haven’t learned a single thing from the last three years of COVID. "
The interesting thing is just what it says about these institutions. These places where The Science!(tm) reigns and everyone is interested in the pursuit of truth...And yet they continue to push crypto-religious nonsense.
3 years ago, an institution that was wrong about this at least had the excuse that there was conflicting data. But today, if an institution is recommending masking or these types of isolation procedures, you have incontrovertible proof not just of their bias but that crypto-religious nutjobs have completely usurped the reigns of power and get no influence from people driven by data.
The depressing bit is that institutions displaying this cancerous rot start at schools and go all the way up to our Federal government.
Of course they haven’t learned a thing.
The only thing Americans did independently to deal with covid was to hoard toilet paper. What is the learning expectation there?
Unlike most of Asia – and MY suggestion re what to do – we did not mobilize the general population (aka militia). There may not have even been some emergency checklist re what to do in a pandemic (stuff like isolation of the sick, preparing schools, nursing homes, testing and contact tracing, hospital supplies/beds, etc) which is itself a damnable failure by the CDC. Since we didn’t mobilize anything, no one can learn anything – what worked, what didn’t, what local tweaks were important, when do the things that need doing get done so we can return to normal, etc.
We chose instead not to exercise self-governance and left everything to a ‘professional’ class – whether fed or state. We have also chosen not to hold them accountable. So nothing to learn there either.
We did the same fucking thing we did post 9/11. Don’t you worry your pretty little heads. You go shopping because otherwise the terrorists will win and what they really hate is our freedom to go shopping. That’s the front line of the war against terrororororism Professionals will take of all the permanent non-frontline emergency stuff – invading countries, dropping bombs from on high, dismantling axes of evil, inspecting grannies undies to make sure they don’t explode. Learned nothing. Ended nothing. And those professionals will make sure nothing ends or is learned.
Fuck you, you fag. You pushed the branch covidian bull far more than any other commenter. Kill your hypocritic self
“Learned nothing.”
This whole experience has turned you (and many others, I’m sure) into a scared, bitter, collectivist douchebag. You just can’t stand that not everyone is as scared as you.
That, and you’re wrong about fucking everything.
“We did the same fucking thing we did post 9/11. ”
I posted a similar comparison in the other thread, and I think its hilarious that you have the GWOT in mind as well…because you COVIDian retards are the EXACT type of people that had us follow the evidence about WMD’s, DO SOMETHING in the name of safety (patriot act), and use big govt interventions to trade freedom for ‘safety’.
Its the same kind of people, every time. It is you, and your progressive friends. Your absolute retard takes on COVID were always perfectly analogous with the behavior of every person that propagated a 20+ year war that enriched govt workers and defense contractors at the expense of American’s freedoms. Just replace “govt workers and defense contractors” with “govt workers and big pharma” and you have the exact same situation.
You realize everyone here knows you are a complete joke right? You must realize this.
You realize everyone here knows
You people are lying assholes. Are you capable of understanding that? I say that regularly. You think I give a fuck about either respecting or being respected by you and your ilk
I know you and your friends that gaslit the world during COVID think that works on everyone, but sorry bud that spell is broken, at least for now.
No one will forget your daily retarded takes. Maybe WaPo is a better comments section for you, those sheep actively seek out gas lighting from nanny state bootlickers. You wont get any ridicule there.
If you are sick, stay home, if you have to go out, or you have a compromised immune system, you might want to wear a mask, also wash your hands more. This is the only advice we needed during covid and we would have done at least as well if not infinitely better considering the second hand effects of our ridiculous covid measures.
The University of Michigan needs to follow in the footsteps of the REALLY smart schools, ass shown below!
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/10/centner-academy-vaccine-rules-leila-centner-david-centner
Florida School Run by Idiots Says Vaccinated Students Must Stay Home for 30 Days After Each Shot
This is the same school where a teacher told students not to hug their vaccinated parents for more than five seconds.
(End subtitles and excerpts).
See? We are ALL data-driven by now! My data says the OTHER (evil) tribe believes in vaccines, so MY tribe must BAN and SHUN the BAD tribe (and their cooties) as much as possible!
The unvaccinated are now CLEAN and the vaccinated are UNCLEAN! Civic-minded BAD! Afraid of micro-chips in vaccines GOOD! Black is white, and good is evil!
And people pick fights with sarc.
Simple fact: There are ALWAYS fanatics on BOTH sides of ANY issue!
Goat-fucking? SOME folks will say, ANY nation (perhaps even their entire cuntinent) should be NUKED FROM ORBIT if ANY single ONE goat-fucker is found thereupon, or even SUSPECTED of being there!
Others say that Government Almighty should force ALL of us to fuck a goat at least once every day!
Surprise... COVID is no different!
PS, I am firmly convinced that many millions of my readers will be left to wonder, and so I will preemptively head them off at the pass…
My personal stance of goat-fucking is ass follows: “Do your own thing, march to the beat-off of yer own drummer, no matter HOW distant the sound of the drum-bleat, and if it feels good, do it!” HOWEVER, being a libertarian AND an animal-lover, I REALLY feel that one needs to FIRST get the fully informed cunt-scent of the goat! And… Goats being ALMOST as simple-minded ass Marxist Mammary-Farter-Fuhrer, AKA Mother’s Lament, with a head full of cement… Getting the fully informed cunt-scent of the goat is, for all fuckable purposes, impussible!
Sigh, "data-driven" these days means find some data that supports your prejudices.
Yeah man, AKA "motivated reasoning"!
Exactly. Like claiming nobody in the last 5s has provided bottom surgery to a minor.
Weren't the health authorities telling people to isolate after the shot when it first came out?
I never read anything about isolation after vaccine shot. I've gotten all five so far, no side effects (71yo). Got covid once, last Christmas, like a bad cold for about 3 days.
"Imagine a student who presumes he has a bacterial infection and desperately needs antibiotics; does he dare risk going to the university hospital and testing positive for COVID-19, especially if that means ejection from his dormitory?"
Especially If he _does_ have a bacterial infection and _does_ desperately need antibiotics. If he gets a COVID-19 test and tests positive because he happened to come in contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus two weeks before, he won't just get ejected from his dorm, he'll be denied medical treatment because any form of treatment other than murder-by-ventilator for someone who has tested positive for COVID is heresy.
How about students with the hiv or the herp?
I thought everyone with HIV already died of COVID?
They don't die of hiv they die with hiv
I'm expecting a lot of positive tests during finals week forcing teachers to extend their school year. Fuck them.
I suspect they would just tell all the students to repeat the year and not even give a tuition discount. Teachers don't do overtime.
We're still trying to figure out the Graduate student strike AFAIK. One thing at a time.
So I guess the homeless crisis is not going to improve in Michigan.
You know, if they tried this shit in the sixties, we would just burn down the health clinic.
Time to change from "Wolverines" to 'Scaredycats."
Karens.
It would be funny if the policy kept athletes off the field (or didn’t) and some sportscaster in the Rush Limbaugh mold picked up on it either way and it really started to destroy the U of M brand.
I don’t think they’ve thought this policy all the way through (or they have and some "students" are more equal than others). Can you imagine the hilarity that will ensue if the policy forces them to forfeit the The Ohio State game?
I grew up in Ann Arbor and my dad was a pharmacist at UM student health services for decades and then at U hospital. My sister also worked there and my brother in law still works there. Covid drove the city stark raving insane. Haven't lived there for 40 years but every time I've gone to visit in the last three years I'm shocked by how bought into this bullshit these people are. Even living in Illinois isn't close to the madness there.
Academia has reached Ancient Rome or Weimar Germany levels of self-indulgence because they've never faced any consequences yet for their stupidity.
Twenty thousand illegal alien children are entering the school's system this week. None tested for Covid. Thousands coming across the southern border each week. None tested for Covid.
Why are people testing for Covid? Either you are sick and need to treat the symptoms, or you are not. Why are people getting the vaccines and boosters. It doesn't stop you from getting Covid nor from spreading it.
The entire nation has gone nutso, all to keep Trump out of the White House. Let him do four years as President and then he will return to Mar a Lago or his golf courses. He certainly will not leave us in worse shape than we are now!
True.
But what if he leaves us in better shape; what then for the collective?
Oh, no doubt. I decided a month or two into COVID that if I ever did test positive, I wouldn't tell a single person ever.
Yea, it's allergies or whatever. Mind your business. If you're afraid, YOU go put on a mask, curl up in the fetal position, and have all your meals shoved through your mail slot by doordash.
I've never taken a test, and don't plan to.
I’ve had the shit 3 (possibly 4) times since 2020. It gets markedly easier to get over with each infection. Yet, I can totally imagine 3 years in the future after everybody’s had it 9 times, they’ll still be pretending it’s airborne leprosy.
Yeah, no shit.
The original panic was because it was a novel virus. One nobody, anywhere, had encountered. Now, it's one that close to 98% of Americans have antibodies for, vaccine or naturally acquired. More than half likely have both.
It's a religion, now, one where the most zealous adherents deeply believe and repeat ancient mantras, no longer knowing what they mean or why they do so.
I think I have it for the 4th time now, I have no real symptoms other than being inexplicably more tired than I should.
Tired of all the bullshit, amiright?
frankly, some people just hate their jobs and will use any excuse to get out of work.
Especially if its a certified, stamped from Fauci and Biden themselves, no shit emergency excuse to miss work.
Of course those folks are going to ham it up and pretend they almost died.
Its always the same people that we see that have "Long COVID". The same people that get fibromyalgia, chronic indescribable and unfalsifiable abdominal pain, etc. Those are like 98% of the people that have "Long COVID". We just laugh at it at this point
Wait, you think IBS isn't real?
Depends on what you mean by real. It's certainly a real collection of symptoms.
And here we go again....An elementary school in Montgomery County, MD is forcing N95 masks onto one class of students due to three positive Covid tests. If the parents don't scream for the principal's head, it might be the final straw that sends me from this fucking state.
Because MoCo. Some of my coworkers kids go to MoCo schools and they have panic attacks if anyone blinks at them. I got out of Maryland almost 20 years ago, not that Northern Virginia is much better
N95 masks are the worst. Not because they're not more effective at stopping the virus, but because they're more effective at preventing kids from breathing. No one should wear an N95 mask for more than an hour at a time.
Test results are automatically shared with a different department.
How is this not a HIPPA violation?
I can guarantee there is a waiver of everything under the sun as part of the application process, let alone actual enrollment.
They’re just keeping U of M a “safe space” until some trans kid who hasn’t come out to xer family yet tests positive for COVID and has to go home, or live on the streets. Should be interesting
Let's be real, Covid Hysteria is going to be a thing again for the election, as a justification for all sorts of shenanigans that will help Democrats harvest votes
Um, it’s called fortifying an election.
Good. Maybe this will alienate even more Zoomers against the idea of wasting thousands on a college degree.
Hopefully further. As I point out above, Robby (per the norm) approaches this with a sort of oblique naivete, but this is a rather overt example of state-run, single-source housing and healthcare.
An at home test won't notify U of M or anyone else. Your private medical provider isn't going to phone up U of M directly and let them know you have COVID, much less kick you out of the dorm. Your private landlord isn't going to phone up U of M to get you tested for COVID. The only way this is a real problem is if you're a proto-socialist child who has to rely on the state for all your one-stop-shopping, healthcare-to-housing-to-education needs.
Your private medical provider isn’t going to phone up U of M directly and let them know you have COVID, much less kick you out of the dorm. Your private landlord isn’t going to phone up U of M to get you tested for COVID.
Don’t be so sure about that. Just remember, someone squealed on Anne Frank.
Fair point. I didn't mean to indicate that it's a lead-pipe cinch and that the first private doc off-campus certainly won't squeal. Just that I doubt every private doctor in Ann Arbor, let alone all of MI or the Midwest has the ability or time to contact the head of medical student services (or whatever) to keep them apprised of no-name student's medical status who may or may not even be on campus in the next two weeks.
Even at a private practice, your positive result and metadata, if not more, is most assuredly going on at least one or more departments of public health's COVID count dashboards.
Do they teach a statistics class at Michigan?
Can the prof calculate the odds of an 18 to 22 year old having any serious symptoms from COVID?
And it's not like campus is the only place the older university employees could catch COVID from.
Yes (many in fact) and yes. However, the problem is that the administrators couldn't give a flying fuck what the odds are.
The important odds are about getting cancelled if they don't follow 'the message'.
The university did not respond to a request for comment.
These things aren't to be challenged.
Or...and hear me out here...:
Students will either say "oh its just a cough/stuffy nose / scratchy throat, I feel fine", or...
"Oh its not COVID, I just had COVID (3) weeks ago", or...
"Oh no im fine, I took a test and its not COVID..."
...like pretty much everyone that has a job (and isnt a lazy POS) has done for the last at least 2 years.
It was funny, during the recent COVID rampage we had at the hospital, no one missed any work and no one died. In fact, it looked like a standard cold. Everyone knew what it was, and pretty much everyone just pushed forward and either didn't test or didn't give a shit.
That's where we are. Authoritarians screaming that "YOU NEED TO BE AFRAID" and normies ignoring them and going about their lives. Well, the sane normies, anyways
COVID has been govt bureaucracy's favorite excuse to do all the things they want to do.
Keeping it an "emergency" for YEARS past when it was one, let them enrich their big pharma buddies with experimental, mandatory meds, and let them get some of that sweet pig slop slush money.
Making it an "emergency" again, will allow them to continue and amp up mail-in voting. And of course anyone who questions mail in voting will be labeled as a J6 conspiracy traitor
There is a great line in the play "My Illustrious Wasteland":
We voted online for online voting, and online voting won.
Michigan has an insane amount of money and is buying up land and putting up new buildings everywhere. There's no reason they can't supply quarantine for students.
If you're sick then you're sick. If you have an infectious disease then you need to go home. Period. Doesn't matter if it's COVID or influenza or the common cold. Don't be taking that shit into the lecture halls.
Now of course, if you live on campus they should not be able to ban you from your home. But no effing way should you be attending classes and spreading your germs and viruses around.
Ditto for the workplace. The only reason the "Office Flu" exists at all is because people come into work when they're sick and insist on coughing on everyone.
If UM wants to kick all sick people off campus I guess they can, but what makes no sense is treating Covid like some magic illness. It is not!
This isn't the first extreme covid policy at U of Michigan.
My son is approaching college age and is touring schools. We will cross Michigan off the list.
Learn to weld. (or any trade, actually)
Almost as much money, and he will get to actually make things, and go home at the end of the day with a sense of accomplishment.
