New College of Florida Embraces Affirmative Action for Men
In an attempt to make the student body more conservative, Christopher Rufo says the school is actively "rebalancing" the ratio of male and female students.

In January, Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis began an attempt to transform New College of Florida, a small public liberal arts college known for its left-leaning student body into a much more conservative "Hillsdale of the South." So far, his plan seems to be working.
As Michelle Goldberg detailed in a New York Times column on Monday, not only has the gender studies department been dissolved and a third of faculty have left the school, but the university's new leaders have also made the school more male.
"This is a wildly out-of-balance student population, and it caused all sorts of cultural problems," Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist who was recently appointed to the college's board, told Goldberg, adding that the new administration is "rebalancing the ratio of students" to achieve equal numbers of male and female matriculants.
While the college has typically been around two-thirds female, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that the male population has skyrocketed in the incoming class—increasing a staggering 23 percentage points to now comprise 54 percent of the class.
This massive change has largely been achieved by aggressively recruiting athletes. Previously the school had no formal athletics program. Now, they make up over a third of incoming freshmen. While it's unclear just how many of these athletes are male, it's worth noting that baseball—which alone comprises 60 percent of incoming student-athletes—is a male-only sport. And Rufo affirmed the ideological drive behind the decision to expand athletics, telling Goldberg that the school introduced an athletic program in hopes of making its student body more male—and therefore more conservative.
As the male population at New College has increased, admitted students' academic performance has also declined. The incoming class has lower test scores and GPAs than last year's incoming freshman—with the average ACT score down to 24 from 27 last year. Student-athletes scored a paltry 22 on average, yet received merit scholarships at a higher rate than other students.
The demographic overhaul at New College of Florida is perhaps the first real-life attempt to counteract the so-called "feminization" of education—an increasingly popular theory that blames the ascension of illiberal social justice politics in universities on women's domination within campuses and in college bureaucracies.
Never mind whether young women are actually that much more liberal than their male counterparts—despite such claims, only 30 percent of 12th grade girls identified as liberal, according to a recent survey.
But even if one accepts the premise that female-led institutions are more left-wing than male-led ones, New College's response—to engineer a more conservative institution by reducing female participation in it—is inherently in conflict with the strong defense of meritocracy and opposition to affirmative action espoused by Rufo and his allies.
Young women are outpacing their male counterparts in the academic sphere; girls now comprise roughly 60 percent of college students. While young men's failure to academically compete with their female classmates is worth our concern, the solution is not to lower the bar for men to obtain collegiate gender parity (something many selective colleges have been quietly doing for years). Nor is the solution to an illiberal left-wing campus culture to engineer a more male—and supposedly more conservative—student body.
Support for meritocracy means nothing if you're willing to discard it support of a favored demographic group. If you're going to make overtures to classical liberal ideals like the "equal treatment of individuals, regardless of race, sex or other characteristics," as Rufo wrote last month, you ought to be willing to live with its consequences.

one man's blame is another's 30 years of empirical data lol
I'm making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning sixteen thousand US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. I skimmed this article to see exactly what Rufo's thesis was-- ie, why rebalancing to favor "men" would make university more conservative (I'm not convinced it will), I came across this Emma Camp bon mot:
They are outpacing their male counterparts in the academic sphere, but I'm not sure I would simply lay it all at the feet of "men who failed to compete with their female classmates."
And what is the "concern" we should express? I'm DYING to know.
Maybe the NYT will publish an article on the subject and Emma will enlighten us?
I work in an office that consists of architects, engineers, and interior designers. The past 2 summers, 65% of our architecture interns have been women, 100% of the interior design interns have been women, and 75% of the engineering interns have been women.
These are generally 3rd or 4th year college students. The only number that doesn't stand out to me as odd compared to a decade ago is the interior design sector. I see the same thing at college job fairs.
I can also tell you that the quality of the applicants has not improved at all - in fact, if anything, it has noticeably slipped. So, I think it's not a case of men not being able to compete academically. I think the guys are dropping out or pursuing other vocations or career paths.
And given what university is like these days, I don't suppose I blame them.
This is a lot of what I see in my world as well. However, when I’ve broughtthis problem up to the powers that be, I’m always told “well, men aren’t applying, so not sure what we are supposed to do.”
It is a bit of a mystery to me. Men are making up a smaller portion of the college/university student body and during this same exact time, more of them are dropping out of participating in the work force. So, it doesn’t seem to just be a case that they are foregoing college to pursue vocations. Still haven’t heard a good explanation that can account for both of these two trends.
Well, you have the same woke DEI / ESG / anti-racist BS in much of the corporate world now as you used to only see in universities.
It's not fun to be in a place where you're expected to apologize for existing.
However, when I’ve brought this problem up to the powers that be, I’m always told “well, men aren’t applying, so not sure what we are supposed to do.”
Funny how "Group x just isn't applying, what are we to do?" is a perfectly valid response in this context.
And what is the atmosphere there like?Lots of catty sniping and back stabbing?Did you see what she is wearing????OMG
I'm not speaking to her,ask someone else.Women don't like other women and too many of them in one place can be detrimental to a work place and cause a lack of cohesion.
I'm old enough to remember when women were vastly outnumbered by men in colleges. The social engineers decided this was a huge problem and affirmative action became institutionalized for virtually every group except white males. Concurrently the social engineers decided that masculinity is toxic and the population of males of all groups were prescribed Ritalin starting Kindergarten. A lot of them never gave it up. I watched this happen 30 years ago. Predictably women now outnumber men in colleges and universities. And a generation of young men are living in mom's basement. Misandry is not only tolerated, it's celebrated. But "libertarians" like Emma worry that giving men opportunities they were formerly denied, will make her beloved institutions more conservative. Whatever that means.
Oh, come ON now! Ye are NOT truly "cutting edge"... Until ye advocate BALANCING THE JAILS AND PRISONS so that the accused-violent-prisoners are matched in numbers, male v/s female! Well, at least, XY v/s XX prisoners, to be more precise!!!! Bring UP the numbers of XX-rated prisoners, please!!!

Good lord, what a hack piece. I am particularly appalled by quote from the study showing that "only 30 percent of 12th grade girls identified as liberal" while ignoring that the author's own prior article on the same study showed that "just 13 percent of boys identify[ed] as liberal".
While it's true that the study mainly showed that most students (boys and girls) don't care or identify either way, political tone is set by the loud partisans - and at that end of the spectrum, the girls outnumbered the boys by over 2:1.
When affirmative action in university admissions began because women were unfairly kept out of college, women were 46.5% of college students (in 1965)
Men are, today, between 40 and 42%.
Just to put that in perspective.
Slight caveat here, there aren't more women because they are taking men's spot ... so much as some men aren't going at all.
Additionally, a recent report by YouthTruth surveying over 25,000 graduating seniors suggests that the gender gap may widen for higher ed’s next cohort of young students. The Class of 2023 reported that while 68% of young men want to go to college, only 57% expect to actually attend. On the other hand, 83% of young women want to go to college, and 77% expect to go.
https://universitybusiness.com/men-are-falling-behind-in-higher-ed-and-it-may-not-be-letting-up/
That's not on us, that's on y'all.
And universities haven't done anything in the last 30 years that made college attendance less attractive for men, right? They haven't embraced progressive politics which routinely demonize men, engaged in kangaroo courts whenever a woman makes a complaint against a man, or actively promoted the attendance of women (which, in a zero sum game like college admissions, is a tacit system of discrimination against men)?
It's the boys' fault for not wanting to attend a place that often makes it clear they're less desirable?
It’s the boys’ fault for not wanting to attend a place that often makes it clear they’re less desirable?
Yes.
Women weren't exactly welcomed into college. We had to fight our way in, all the time being harassed, seen as 'less than', and encouraged to just go home and learn to cook. Women weren't even allowed (that's right, allowed) into college until 1830 something or other. So in short, "man up" if you want an education; we certainly had to "woman up" to get a chance to get ours.
That's seriously your response? Oh almost two hundred years ago our ancestors had to fight to get a higher education, so now men should suffer if they want to go to college? Really?
OMG, boohoo ! ... they are being mean to me, I don't want to go school today. Look, everybody has their own choices to make ... so enjoy the sidelines and drink soymilk if you want, fine. Whatever. I've seen tougher mettle in my Nana's knitting circle than in some men today.
"While the college has typically been around two-thirds female"
I would have liked those odds when I was in college.
mme. dillinger went to one of your engineering-type schools and was outnumbered 10-1 lol.
Yes, she was. Of course we also had a nursing school and an education school to balance things out. But my classes were overwhelmingly male.
Oddly, my favorite engineering professor was a woman.
Yes, butt only because she had HUUUUGE... Tracts of land! I will BET on it!!!
Yeah, no.
While the numerical odds are with you, the odds of being accused of *checks notes* a sex pest scandal have gone up 472,000% which is likely to end in the termination of your college career, your name printed in Rolling Stone and other relevant news-worthy type publications and your name and face plastered all over Twitter/X while the object of your affections carries a mattress all over the campus in memoriam of your failed encounter.
Edit: Oh, and she pops in to a Libertarian Plus Meetup and "rubs elbows" with the Reason Staff.
your name printed in Rolling Stone
But I still can't get my picture on the cover.
I should get together with Haven Monahan and start a supergroup.
No. Stop it. Two wrongs do not make it right.
Even in 1983 there were rungs lowered for women, minorities, foreigners, everyone it seemed but me when I started college. I received $100 split between the first two semesters for my high ACT score. A good friend of mine from high school who got one point higher than me in the ACT got a full ride scholarship. The resentment I felt towards all the special treatment at college fueled some of my drive to succeed but I am a special case. There should be merit but all this gender/race/etc. based promotion should just stop.
Are they giving males an affirmative-action style demographic plus score on their evaluation, or shifting priorities in a way that coincidentally attracts male students?
Because the headline sounds like the former, while the body of the article and the links provided sound more like the latter.
Agreed. It sounds like the University simply shifted its priorities to athletics which attracts more males because men care about sports more than women do.
It is frustrating how many people will fully embrace the activities they claim to despise, as long as it gets them what they want in the end.
I didn't see anywhere in the article where academic standards are being lowered, or where women are being denied admittance.
They got rid of gender studies, which is a hacky academic field anyway, and they recruited a baseball team, which dropped their average ACT.
One of the links does show where the academic standards are being lowered – more like gutted – outside the student-athletes.
But re the athletes, They are providing govt-paid merit/honors scholarships for a ton of those athletes. 70 for baseball – with no athletic facilities, no team, and no schedule of games because no league and they aren’t part of NAIA. And how the fuck do you even have a team with 70 players? The University of Florida competed for the national championship last year and had 6 players drafted by MLB – with 35 scholarships (37 players).
The returning students are being returned into old dorms with mold that were closed last year because of the mold. Or a hotel that is a 15 min walk from campus along the side of a highway. The athletes and freshmen are being assigned to apartments that were for upperclassmen last year.
40% of the faculty has left and only a few new ones have been hired. 36 open vacancies for faculty with 12 days until the new semester. So the course catalog is now gutted and those students who have to find mandatory courses for their major can’t. That’s how they’re getting rid of existing students.
This is funny as hell. Maybe they can provide scholarships for two baseball teams and at least compete with each other in all the spare time they now have with no classes being offered.
I just about went off on DeSantis till I linked to the other article outlining his proposals which didn't contain 'equal' women and men at ALL.
https://reason.com/volokh/2023/01/31/the-latest-desantis-higher-ed-reform-proposals/
Only, "eliminate Diversity, Equity & Inclusion bureaucracies and initiatives"
So which is it? Is this article just a big fat lie?
Dude, it's Emma "conservative boys are going to become white supremacists and nazis" Camp. And she's just rehashing something from the New York times.
I think that says it right there. Fucking Teen Reason.
The demographic overhaul at New College of Florida is perhaps the first real-life attempt to counteract the so-called "feminization" of education
If education identifies as feminine it should be allowed to have gender affirming surgery along with all the students in it's system. I recommend using this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burdizzo
Dumb commie fag is still dumb.
not only has the gender studies department been dissolved and a third of faculty have left the school
I can only get so hard, Emma.
Screw the faculty, start firing administrative bureaucracy staffers.
Young women are outpacing their male counterparts in the academic sphere; girls now comprise roughly 60 percent of college students.
What a bizarre argument this is. If this evidence supports the conclusion, why doesn't the fact that males now comprise 54% of students at this college prove they are "outpacing" women?
I very much noticed a lack of hard numbers in the article. Everything is percentages. When a third of incoming freshmen are athletes and 60% of those are a baseball team I start to get an idea of how big this college is.
This is a tiny ass college that added a baseball team and its enrollment was so small that this wildly changed the demographics of the school, then Reason did a drive-by hit piece on it. I strongly doubt this has anything to do with politics.
inb4 a "third of the staff quit" means two elderly teachers retired.
It's odd that 99% of schools in this country grant left wing constituencies preferences, but Emma focuses on the single institution favoring the right complain about. Notice that she doesn't actually criticize the typical preference offerings, she solely pressures the right to give up benefitting their own. If successful the result would be leftists continuing to advantage their allies while the right does not. Is it a coincidence this is exactly what leftists want? advantage theirs. What better way to recruit than by demonstrating not only is there a financial benefit to being openly left but it's always worth it because there will never be a cost.
In practice this is what Libertarianism is. While it looks like something else in effect is an escapement that only permits the gears of society to turn left.
the jOuRnaLisM tears over this are going to be delicious
I've worked as a engineer for over 50 years and the young engineers where I work are better than I ever was. Older engineers agree with this.
The female to male ratio is about one and both sexes seem equally talented. The only sex related differences that I see is that the women are more confident than the men who seem somewhat withdrawn by comparison. Women prefer systems engineering while men favor hardware design. This isn't extreme, it's only a slight preference.
I would guess that the men who grew up in the US were subjected to the "all men are rapists, all white men are oppressors ..." That kind of stuff may be what's making younger male engineers less confident. This is a change over the last 25 years or so.
We should be getting rid of "affirmative action" rather than doubling down on it.
Also, the idea that packing a college full of men will make it more "conservative" is profounding sexist. And not sexist in a social justice way, but sexist in the dictionary definition way.
Florida is dying on the hill of Kulturwar.
And not sexist in a social justice way, but sexist in the dictionary definition way.
Both are plain sexist.
"Florida is dying on the hill of Kulturwar."
